I think the reason why Molly’s character worked so well was that he had such an array of similarities and differences based on who he was talking to. Let’s look at Nott and him for example, the two are pretty much the same in regards to their origins, they’re outcasts who could never spend long in a town before moving on. Now of course there are differences with this. Nott is not a wanted member of society due to the reputation of goblin kind while Molly was a mere circus act. But they are in some way connected in the fact that society will probably never accept them because of things far beyond their control and in a way they kind of see a little bit of themselves in each other. And with that out the way we can talk about the differences in characters between Molly and Caleb. From what I’ve seen so far regarding the character, Molly is the absolute opposite of Caleb not just in species but in personality and loyalty. Molly is this selfless, charming, egotistical showman with a “live everyday like it’s your last” mentality. Even in moments where he knows he’s doing things to accomplish his own agenda he does it in a way that in the end at least he managed to help people, even if it is small insignificant things like pretending to be royalty for a scam, like Beau said he still managed to make the townsfolk at least happy and feel privileged to be in the grace of royalty. Caleb though is selfish even by his own admission, at least he was at the beginning, the only person he cared about as a friend was Nott. The rest were expendable to him, nothing more than pawns to use to better his own situation. He’d stick with them until things get extremely hairy or until they were no longer useful to him. After that he’d just turn tail and run. That’s not to say that Caleb doesn’t have a reason for this kind of distrust towards others, less we forget the man used to make mittens out of freshly baked bread because he couldn’t afford it. But that deserves its own analysation. Hell even before Molly’s death he wanted to run away and just leave those on the team for dead. When Molly died though something in Caleb changed, if only slowly. Molly really left an impact on these two, for one this is the first time Nott ever turned down stealing anything out of respect for Molly, she didn’t want to steal from one of the few people in her life that truly understood her. Caleb on the other hand still has thoughts about leaving, but not for the reasons that he previously wanted to leave, this time it was selfless in a way. Caleb doesn’t want any of the team getting hurt, he doesn’t want another Molly dead because of him and his past. He sees himself as the danger to those around him and ergo he has to go, even leaving behind Nott with the group. He even admits that in his eyes, he’s a bad person and that people from his past will use the group to get to him. These are just small examples from two of five other characters in this series that Molly has interacted with, each one changing and learning from his example and bettering themselves even if they didn’t know it. Just thought I’d bring this up, please correct me if I’m wrong because I haven’t really watched the series fully, I’m just going with what I’ve seen and read about this character so far.

Hell his selflessness was expressed in his final moments, he faced off against an enemy he probably knew he couldn’t beat head on, probably knowing that he’d die because his friends were in danger, he risked his life to ensure the safety of everyone else on the Nein.
