    Personally guys, I wouldn’t go on a big trip when your motorcycle is knocking…… when you first picked up the bikes, they were not knocking if I’m remembering correctly. But Ollies bike then started knocking….. any knock is a course of concern….. Not all knocks are caused by mechanical clanking ….I watched the video of you guys taking it apart and putting it back together again but you didn’t check the spark plug timing. It only has to be out a slight degree to create pre detonation….. And the problem hasn’t existed too long to show any staining or damage on the piston or the cylinder bore…. if you go on your big tour with it knocking it’s going to let you down…..
    Also, I would like to think you guys would buy motorcycle recovery cover …..
    Anyway, have a think about it before heading off

    • @walles1
      @walles1 3 місяці тому +2

      "but you didn’t check the spark plug timing." - can you explain that? Its EFI ignition so how do you check it unless you connect it to the computer? Or do you mean to take ignition from white bike and plug it into black one to check if it run without knock?

    • @ferguscawley11
      @ferguscawley11 3 місяці тому

      @johncranwell3783 spark plug timing or ignition timing is set on those bikes. The pulse is taken off the flywheel which is keyed to the crankshaft via woodruff key. The spark timing cannot be adjusted. Any advance or retard of spark timing is controlled within the cdi unit (ecu) itself and is preset by the factory

    • @luddite6239

      The good thing about having two identical machines is that you've got a complete set of spare parts available to help identify any faulty components. I'd suggest swapping the cam chain tensioners between the two bikes and seeing if the noise goes with it. Should only take 15 minutes...

    • @heleti0000
      @heleti0000 3 місяці тому +1

      So hard to tell from a video sound but something metal is definitely “hitting” something metal. A ‘slapping” chain would have been my first guess and it would be so easy to swap out the TC tensioner. Might work as expected out out of the bike but if the spring is stuffed, might not work properly under “load”. Good luck getting this sorted ASAP.

    I would recommend checking the oil pressure / oil flow if possible, you may have poor oil flow to the top end or the big end bearings which would not necessarily show up with a bearing play test. The rattle could be oil starvation and the momentary loss of power could be the big end bearing trying to seize. Good luck with the trip, Jim

    Well I'm glad you two and Robert fixed the power issue. The rattle is still there. Story: Whole different bike, but the Suzuki VS1000's have a clutch basket issue in their older bikes that causes a "chudder sound/knocking". That's a common issue with that VS1000 bike. The bike runs good, it just sounds bad. Surprisingly not all VS1000 bikes have the clutch basket issue. Luck of the draw. Excellent Cool 😎

    Well you two have had a good grounding on bike repairing with Robert a top guy. It is a shame that the noise still persists after all that work and the replacement fuel system. Something like that would haunt me until I found out the cause. Strange the bike is running better even though the noise is still there. No matter, you have both remained positive throughout and that is your great strength together. You have visited Leicestershire several times now, as I have said before, when you are in the area let me know and your more than welcome to call on us. All the best for now until Sunday. A lot of work stripping all the engine to find out its a fuel issue, at least you know the engine is good😂Its great experience also👍This actually reminds me of my first new bike back in the late 70's, me and my friend bought identical bikes (Kawasaki KE125's) and I ran mine in properly by keeping the revs down, while my friend did the opposite and just gunned it from the start😂My bike remained quiet but his sounded like a bag of bolts🤣This might be the noise issue😉I hope the fuel issue is fully sorted and you can get on with your adventures😁Robert is a top man👍

    Great to see the bike is running better. But that knocking sound is still there, I thought it might be cam related but you have checked that. can you put Lavi's cam chain tension on Ollie's to see if that makes a difference to the knocking?

  • @MrAusadventure
    @MrAusadventure 3 місяці тому

    Well it took a lot of time and effort to find that loss of power issue but it was a worthy exercise I feel, especially for the learning experience!

    Worst case scenario is main bearings. Considering the was stripped down this far, I would have spilt the cases to check. Early big end knocking is nigh on impossible to feel. So next strip, new camchain tensioner, bore hone, new piston, check and grind valves?

  • @MrMarkloevlie

    i think the knocking sound is cause by the tappet valves or rocker arm, or you need to find a new cylinder head, sometimes when you look at it, it seems no problem,

  • @3GingerCats
    @3GingerCats 3 місяці тому

    I was thinking about this today... as I watched the Tach on my bike while it was Idling after getting to work. I came to the conclusion, It cannot be a rod knock (Gudgeon pin or big end) and that also eliminates main bearings... it idles at twice the speed of a car engine, so the noise would be twice the frequency if it was one of these things. and that means it is something to do with the valve train, Camshaft bearing, Rocker bearings/pins, and what is between the rocker and the valve? is it a valve seat floating in and out of position? is the valve guide intact? it is definitely something between the head of the Valves, and the Camshaft... time to pull the head off again and strip the valves out! at that frequency, It is not bottom end, that can be eliminated, with the compression test being ok that means valve guides and seats are likely to be ruled out, but what about a broken spring? was that checked? if one is broken and binding or just clattering it could make noise, but also create valve float, & may also effect compression, but that's a MAY, not a definite.
    this takes me back to the rockers... and depends on how they are mounted, if they are shaft mounted, and have been lacking the oil they need they may have worn on the shaft, which would create a loose fit, but that may only be in one direction and not show up with a wiggle. or a rocker could be bent and going in and out of position on both the cam and the end of the valve...
    and I hate to say this, but swapping the head from one bike to the other to see if the noise swaps over with it, and then swapping other bits between heads, until you find the one part that makes the noise... Just like you would with spark plugs and leads/ coils until you find which coil or plug is faulty (if you don't have the equipment to test it without doing this)
    (and after the ad break where I stopped to write this, you start swapping parts)... I didn't even consider it was even fuel injected, I thought Carby... but yes.. that's a possibility, as is ignition timing, or even crank angle sensor & trying to inject fuel and send spark at the wrong time/

      To be honest any motorcycles small enough to be someone’s first bike ah abused and poorly maintained….. I bought my first British bike a 1967 BSA C15… it was about eight years old and I didn’t know what I was buying. It just seemed like a good idea to buy that little bike but of course it had been used abused and poorly repaired in the past….. so it wasn’t long before I had to take it down to the crankshaft replace all the bearings piston rings new valve seats and so on and then I had a great little bike that served me well…. It also put me on a very sharp curve of learning how to repair motorcycles which I have done all my life.

      @@johncranwell3783 Hi well I stupidly paid over the odds then £85 from a motorcycle dealer who was a friend of my uncle who worked in Newcastle on Tyne. I foolishly thought from a so called friend it would sell me a good bike as I had absolutely what constituted a good or bad motorcycle. Well after that I just bought cheaply from friends of friends. One thing I more or less learned was caveat emptor from buying any bike on Newcastle’s bike Mecca the West road.
