As someone who’s dad, grandads, uncles are all London cabbies.. I really appreciate what you’re doing and how you’re shedding a different light on the job. Props to you mate and wish you every success. The gold standard ⭐️
Fair points but on the flip side for example re tax tom will have to pay it at the end of the year whereas PAYE don't and have comfort there Will be no tax bill. Another issue self employed don't get paid for taking holidays whereas employed do. I get 36 annual holidays a year (I can take a month off and still be getting paid)
Tom, I love your videos because I drove 7.5t trucks around London for forty years. Parcels aren't argumentative. 😸
When I lived in London I loved walking around and exploring without a fixed destination. Then I'd be like "ok i'm in chiswick and I need to get to Paddington station" and I would just walk it without ever looking at my phone. After 2.5 years people I knew that had lived in London their whole life would say "how do you know where to go where to turn?" if we were out going somewhere. I miss it so much.
Tom you talk like a Butter boy .The facts are the hours that you work it’s difficult to have a social life and a partner .
You need to work days to get the above but the flip side is you have to take a large paycut working days
Hence the affordability of a caravan in clacton to live in is real 🚕
30 years in game still love it.
No 1 priority = Keep Fit
how can you love being stuck in a cab all day?
@@tfootball8704- That's just your narrow-minded take on it.
See the sights, make decent money, meet new people.
It's inspiring and heartening to see a man have such pride and passion for his craft even if the observer has no connection per se with it. You are also a very talented film maker. Your videos are engaging, educational and entertaining.
Cracking episode Tom. All credit to you. *Every* job should come with this level of dedication, reward and satisfaction. The fact that many don't is a tragedy. Keep up the great work.
I read on a TFL email not so long ago it was just a update email sort of thing that TfL send out they’re trying to get private hire drivers out of that side of it and trying to push the knowledge onto them.
I think the problem is taxi drivers and private hire drivers are probably frightened to go to the doctor and discuss mental health problems if they have any because when it comes to renewing your badge every three years and TFL ask for a medical from your doctor the doctor has an obligation to provide information . If TfL see something on your medical that they don’t agree with or find a danger to passengers, you’ll be refused your badge and I think that is the problem with many drivers they frighten to go to the doctor and discuss a problem because of having it on their record when they come to renew.
I'm a HGV driver who's fallen out of love with the profession, I'm doing my taxi theory next month so I'm hoping I'll be on the road cabbing soon
This is why I appreciate your channel. You are a true professional, treating your job as a profession and always working to be on top of it. I don't know if most London cabbies are like that, but not in most places in the world. Kudos, Tom. (PS: We'll be in London in September; I'll look out for you!)
The famous boardroom firing scenes are filmed at Black Island Studios in West Acton, where they also film a range of different projects including adverts, music videos, and TV shows, with The Apprentice being among
I have the fun of driving a 3.5 Ton truck around London and Home Counties. Sadly since 2020 some of the back roads I use to use I have not been down since then. But I love my job since I am in London one day, Ipswich the next and Kent the day after. So I am glad not to be stuck in the 20MPH zone which is London.
I feel like Tom makes a video like this every six months. I'm not complaining, they're always very good!
I did chuckle at your I am my own boss comment and thought to myself this is why Tom won’t work for comcab etc cause then he has a boss 😂
Love this videos man
Thank you for sharing. Great vlog.
Really Enjoyed this video Tom well done
he must be an idol star, like a pop singer. he looks really handsome and has a good voice. 😮
Love your videos Tom. Keep up the good work
Long time since I lived in London, but visited just last week and even though I know the place and am happy to use buses and tubes I always ensure my last trip of the day is a black cab to the station.
It was National Gallery to Kings Cross this time. Driver was great, very polite, we had a chat and I always enjoy seeing some of the quieter back streets at night. After your vid I asked him what he thought of Euston as we passed. He hated it!
I’m a taxi driver in Perth, Scotland - been doing it for 3 years after working for SSE for 20 years, I left SSE after passing my driving test in 2019, I couldn’t stomach the place any longer, the culture, the way other staff spoke to each you etc. being a taxi driver is an amazing job, always had a perception about it before, and it is nothing like I’d thought. Brilliant video, and good to see someone who loves their job.
Same except drive a van nowadays, all over Scotland. Worked in finance and the culture is genuinely horrible, walked out several years ago
Hi Tom Always great to see you on the U Tube.
10am on a Saturday is a good day.. a taxi tom upload.. a good variety of videos with a great down to earth presenting style.. great to have you back..
Keep up the work.
Thank you from a long term subscriber.
love the video Tom - if you enjoy your work, it makes life 10x easier!
Thanks Tom. It’s always good to be reminded how lucky we are to serve the public in such a free and independent manner, in this truly magnificent city! Always enjoy your vids. See you at the FP sometime.✈️
I love the honesty in this video. Good to have you back!
Another fabulous video, Tom. I was bigging you up to a passenger in my cab only just yesterday, you deserve a mention‼️ ☮️💜☯️
Getting that good work life balance is essential! Great vid
Keep up the good work. Fascinating watching and comparing you from Paris.
Thanks Tom doing the KOL at moment your videos keep me motivated finding a bit of a struggle at the mo.
Spot on. I absolutely love my job 😎🚖
I love taking the corporate drones to the train station listening to their corporate spiele! 😂 And knowing that ive saved up for my 5 week sailing holiday.
Great positivity Tom I think you would’ve done well whatever you did😊
Great video! 👍 and yes, your videos working as a london taxi driver, has encouraged me to do the london knowledge. Been doing the knowledge for a year and 7 months. Just booked my written exam. Hopefully, i will be there soon The points in this video and past videos you have made is why i want to be come a taxi driver. Keep up the great content 👏
Excellent video mate and is that a Seiko turtle I spot 😊
Superb video! Inspiring, great cinematography. This needs to be a corporate promotion!
Taxi hackney carriage in east Sussex past 8 years and LOVE it❤
Tom your videos definitely helped me to decide to start the knowledge, my dad is a cabbie and hes always more than happy to go to work, ive been in a corporate job for 6 years, constantly masking my true personality. Im up for my drop in a few weeks, atb.
Lovely positive video Tom and great to hear you share so many views that I have as well 🎉😊
Love the road signs at 11:22
Another great video, Tom. A question for ya: what is the best London black cab mobile app? "Gett"?
Retired from Taxis a few years ago now but I still like to watch Tom's videos to stay in touch with what is happening in Taxiland and just to remember how much I loved the job even though I plied my trade in the provinces I quite often found myself in London and surrounding travel hubs so I have a little bit of knowledge purely through experience.Keep it up Tom and thanks.
Finished 2 Blue Books as of yesterday just from watching your videos.
Good video Tom. My mate is a London cabbie, paid 43quid in tax one year and never stopped telling us all about it in the pub!
Wow Tom what a great video I agree with all you Enjoy meeting people from all over world in Liverpool great job here in liverpool
Welcome back
Well done Tom, you are a true credit to your trade.
Man is definitely cooking the books with the UA-cam expenses! And I'm all for it. 😉 😉
Dan the cabby at. The sanctuary. Met the other week. Good honest blogg
Cheers Dan! Legend
the only thing that was bad about driving a London Taxi was the earl FX4 which used to vibrate so badly i took a couple of hours when i got home to get back to normal
Love your vids mate, but how do u put up with that plonka Sadiq Khan ?
We love you ❤
Have you done the AtoZ London street atlas Jigsaw? Bet you would do that in record time!
It sounds and looks great. Too bad I can't do a job like that.
Tom you are a credit to your profession and the committment to the taxi industry is admirable !!! Why can't all taxi drivers be as committed to the job as you? Tom I like your opening in this video and was wondering if you had more videos of your travels as I had been reading in your Sunday Summary! Like to see parts of Cambodia and the islands and Malaysia, places I will never visit but would love to see ! Many safe and good journeys in your cab and who knows maybe I will spot you when I come to London (may favorite place to visit) in just 17 days from now !!!!
Apprentice was even more impressive when the Amstrad Offices were in Brentwood. Then it took a few seconds from being picked up outside the office to be on the Embankment.
Seems a great career (outside Camden) 😂
Is "The Knowledge" still a thing in London? We used to have a similar thing in Germany, called "Ortskundeprüfung", and I think it wasn't quite as gruelling as "The Knowledge" (but still a major thing), but that was discontinued in August of 2021.
You are so right, we are living in the greatest city in the World so much so that I am going to start the Knowledge this year.
Went to London last weekend and got in a taxi from Waterloo station to Kensington and had a lovely chat with the black cab driver and even got talking about how I watch you and that he found what your doing was interesting
I did this also, could have used the tube but instead got a taxi from Kings Cross to Liverpool Street. Great talking to the lady taxi drive and seeing London from a different perspective. Thanks Tom.
Thank you 🙏🏻 putting passengers and new drivers in taxis is my aim 👌🏻
Am a taxi driver in essex, and i love my job
Great video promoting working for yourself, let alone being a taxi driver. Very interesting to hear about tax too. Never mind, rat race tomorrow 😂.
You always add charm to the most interesting city on the planet as its not a planned city as such
WELL DONE FROM SYDNEY OZI
Your videos are part of why I dream about leaving Stockholm, Sweden and moving to London and become a taxi driver.
I've only been to London once in my life, soon after 7/7 btw, and my dad and I are gonna spend a week there to celebrate his 60th birthday in little under a month.
I’d love to do it but I don’t ever see myself being able to live in London. I’d love to but my bank says no.
Unrelated but, nice watch! is it a seiko Pepsi?
It is yeah
Atleast you will hear everyone's problems good or bad.
I have a feeling that in todays economy you cant really afford to become a cab driver :/ 2 or 3 years of learning the map while boosting a full time employment because nobody can live on part time unless they live with family and has no commitments. The cabs are honestly... expensive. 70 to even 90k for the new ones, or you go for a fleet for older cabs that is not even yours :/ I personally had to give up on it. Cost of living just made it a dream that im at the wrong place in time for to achieve :C
Tom - would love to see a video from you about other road users ... particularly motorcyclists. I was a courier (despatch rider) in London many (many) moons ago and the reception from "cabbies" varied from helpful and benign to dangerous and offensive. Given that couriers were more or less unregulated there were a pretty large number of idiot riders from the UK and elsewhere in the world riding on London streets and I bet some of them did some stupid things to rile Taxi drivers. In fact I do not even know if despatch riders (as such) even exist now in this digital world. It would be great to get your perspective on the road manners and behaviour of some definable road users (such as motorcycle riders) you share the Kings Highway with. Thanks.
I just wanted to say: You are one of my favourite influencers at the moment and I think you are a huge inspiration for young people! You show what real passion is. Your content is real, not this "plastic life" a lot of much bigger influencers show their community.
I was in London with my parents last month. For my newly retired parents it was the first trip to London and they were a bit afraid to spend an afternoon on their own, as they do not speak English. I said to them: "If you get lost: hail down a taxi, tell the driver the hotel name or the point of interest you wanted to go and the driver will take you there for like 10 or 15 pounds." I'm honest, I would not say that in every city, as the taxi trade has a bad reputation in a lot of touristic european cities. Your videos convinced me that in London this is much different.
Thank you Monika 🙏🏻 it’s an honour to have that reputation you have shared
As a private hire driver in London, I can confirm that some of these applies to us too, and it's beautiful!
I attempted the Knowledge back in 1998 ! Spent 4 years on it but couldn’t put in the dedication , got to 28 days but put back to 56 which was the last straw. At 54 years of age I still hanker to do the knowledge, work and take time off when I want , working in our great City , but live too far out in Essex now. 😏
Essex is not far , many of us cabbies plus myself included live outside London
Anyone know how much a taxi would be from Wembley arena to King’s Cross station in the evening?
The only folk who think Taxi Driving is the best job in the world, especially in that there London, are born and bred Londoners. And taking time off is not unique to Taxi drivers, any self employed can do it.
Only downside is the unhealthy lifestyle of sitting about. Did it for 38 years and unfortunately had to hang my boots up due to health issues. Too easy to hang on for another fare.
I had 52 appearances 😅4 years metropolitan police at time not tfl😮
I'm an ex bus driver of 10 years and now an Uber driver for the last 8 years and my rating is 4.99 🎉lovely jubilee 👌
So much more benefits of being employed
Be a tough sell getting big numbers on the K now...
Would you say that the job requires eveng and night shifts or does a 7am - 5pm cover expenses and earn a bit?
8 hour shifts are enough in this job. Doesn't matter if days or nights
@lloydeelloyd I see. That sounds really good.
Tom I get high on your enthusiasm
Nice video, however no money on taxi business anymore especially if ya a family man. Constantly overwhelmed of stress, will I actually earn enough money to pay the huuuuuge bills at the end of the month? No, thank you. After being a taxi driver for more then a decade, I just have more than enough to work 70hrs+ a week and ended up earning less than minimum wage and a huge debt still to pay.
I assume that you are only allowed to be behind the wheel for a certain amount of time in on stretch
No you can work for as long or short as you like.
How much roughly does it cost for the training/ tests etc?
Hello millwall boy I've been a cab driver for 33 years its costs you the cost of a bike odds and ends like the runs ie routes ect and your time, if you do it in your spare time then not much, but if you do it full time then you lose wages 3-4years without pay up the lions.
You think autonomous taxis will take over?
3:14 i genuinely thought brent underwood was walking past the cab
Hi hi
Have you met Cockney Reg?
So why are our numbers dropping every week and there’s fewer people on the knowledge now ?
Coz its so easy to get a PH badge and vehicles aint a 100k after 4/5 years studying.
@@originalpickaxeyes
Driving a cab in London is 2 steps forward, 1 step back during the good times and 1 step forward, 2 steps back during the bad times.
Stay single, no mortgage, no kids and hopefully the good times stay.
Depend where you from. Uk currency always good. Asia taxi or e hailing job is bad.
It's less than minimum wage now
Any new drive along videos Taxi Tom?
Saturday 😬👌🏻
Top man, keep up the good work 👍
this sort of job is only good when you're single. Very hard to keep a family/girlfriend/wife
Best job in the world
The average london taxi drivers net profit
Would get them a mortgage / loan on a caravan in clacton 😂
Now that bank managers have all but disappeared, I really think the moment you leave school you should be encouraged to have an accountant that keeps an eye on your finances.
Hero
Just make sure you put money aside for taxes if youre self employed. So many get a massive shock when the brown envelope drops
I have never wanted to be a cabbie so hard as I do now.
So, thanks? I guess?
Trouble is tom , u can do all what your saying as an uber driver.
