I'm planning a road trip itinerary on the Faroe Islands. I've been reading up on this hike. Do you just go uphill along the fence? Is the fence electrical? Can you climb over it? The reason I ask is I'm hiking with my wife who is afraid of heights and a ten-year old child. I'd like for them to be on the safe side of the fence but I would like to cross to the edge to get good videos and pictures. Thanks.

Yes, from the parking you just walk uphill along the left side of the fence. It's straight up the mountainside for about 15-20 minutes. I guess the fence at this section is to keep the sheep from wandering off into the wrong area. There are no cliff edges or any dangers while walking up to the ridge. It's a simple wired fence, and it's not electrical. At the top, standing on the ridge, you must step over the fence to get closer to the edge facing the fjord. People are doing it all the time, so it shouldn't be a problem to find a place where you can do it. Just be careful not to damage the fence. The most popular spot for photos seems to be a bit further down on the ridge (towards Funningur village), where one can stand posing on a stone looking out on the fjord. In most places, it isn't that steep on the fjord side of the ridge. People just take the photos to make it look like that. Most of the footage from the video is from the next plateau higher up on the ridge. The ridge looks like a staircase with plateaus forming the steps. To reach that higher plateau from the location where you enter the ridge, I walked on a narrow path on the valley side of the ridge until I could walk up on a grassy slope to the top of the ridge again.

Do not promote or travel to Faroe Islands. Mass killings of whales must stop.
