The Galaxy line is nice, but the post Wolf classes are just, *chefs kiss*!
To me, the Nova-Class made a lot more sense as a science/exploration vessel then a Galaxy-class. More sense in regards for cost of material and construction. I can actually see a few of them working in-tandem, quickly exploring unexplored sectors as small teams. And the ability of a science vessel being able to land on new planets, turning it into land-bound lab, had to be a considerable bonus. (The Intrepid-class was also cool.)
tbf the Galaxy Class was meant to be a luxury ship that packed enough weapons to not have a couple escorts protecting it. however if we like in STO it classified as a Engineering type Exploration cruiser. after the Borg scare Starfleet wanted something that wasnt a big floating space target for the Borg.
STO is not a valid source of information as they had to change a lot of things in order to fit the gaming format... A Galaxy Class was intended to be the top of the line exploration cruiser, hence why the Enterprise D was a part of that class, as the flagship!
An Intrepid with 2 or 3 Novas would be a great small exploration fleet. Maybe include a Defiant (but personnel would have to be rotated since the Defiant lacks creature comforts) as an escort.
I love the Nova, such a "level up" from the Oberth.
Let's be honest. The NX refit would be a step up from the Oberth class.
Awwww I always feel so bad for the Oberth Class ;) :P
@@madrabbit9007 Exactly, a leaky rowboat stands a better chance to not blow up when the enemy gets a target lock on her.
@@brianhunter2924 hey, let's be fair. This baby here has so much space for science *slaps Oberth hull, ship explodes*
@@jeremybuxman7555
That’s the ideal ship for Starfleet then. 😂
I wonder if those tactical refit Nova class ships ever got called Super-Nova’s :P
Even though it’s a ship-of-the-week destined to get wrecked, it’s hard not to like the Nova. It’s a small, squishy science ship that can still take a few swings
Super Nova LOL Love it!
That's what I called mine in Star Trek Online.
Bossa Nova? Chevy Nova?
You take Nova, install a warp core from Defiant class, and voilà -> Super-Nova ;D
@@Uchilsson I like that as well! Add 4 forward facing and 2 aft facing pulse phaser cannons, and you get a scoutship with more teeth. Add ablative armor and even stronger shields thanks to that Defiant-class warp core. Add another 30 meters to make room for more storage for proton and quantum torpedoes. Heck, it also needs two dedicated compact holosuites for training, specialized conferences, and even leisure. I think that is something that would be a basis for the Super Nova.
The Nova class starships are beautiful. Too bad there isn’t Star Trek series on Captain Ransom prior to the battles with Voyager. The Equinox was a beast against Voyager.
I've always loved the Nova Class. As much as I love the Defiant, it would have been really cool to see this ship as a small tactical warship in its place.
I wouldnt have minded it as a Defiant either... But also happy with it as a science vessel with teeth :)
I still have no idea why I like this ship so much. A while back you asked the question as to what ship we would like to have as our own and this is the ship I first thought of. It just seems like one of the most versatile ships in Starfleet. I am curious as to exactly how powerful a fully armed Nova would be if it was used completely as a warship. Still, the Equinox is the one I fell for, so I'll just keep going with that one.
I love the Nova Class as well! It shows design lineage, and I just love that! :)
Really like this ship design. Wish the equinox storyline in voyager was a multi episode arc rather than a two parter.
Yeah I would have loved that as well :)
Exactly
Would have been neat if the two crews split again. Maquis on the Equinox. I frigging loved that plucky little ship that could!
Always loved the Nova class. There was a small section about it if I recall in the TNG technical manual and a very rough design made which was not a million miles away from its final design, when the guide was talking about the possibility of the future for the Enterprise E.
Yes, you are correct, there was... Of course, that Nova Class would have been MUCH larger then this one :)
It was originally developed as a concept design for the USS Defiant. But I think Roddenberry thought it still looked too ‘starfleet’ to be a warship. The concept was later developed by Rick Sternbarch as the USS Equinox, Nova class.
Im sorry Colin your are incorrect... The design was originally part of the TNG Tech Manual as a future design for the Enterprise. The design was revisited for the Defiant Class but rejected. Not by Roddenberry however, he had long since died by that point!
Ah, the Nova. When Starfleet decided that it needed a science vessel that could stand up to more than an angry glare.
Great timing! This comes out RIGHT after we [SPOILERS!!] See 2 Nova Class in the latest Picard S2 trailer.
I wish I could take some credit for that, But it's absolute coincidence... This video has been done and scheduled for about a month now, as is Thursdays Back trek on Voyagers Equinox 2 Parter! :)
I found this class to be attractive efficient and functional.
You and me both! :) I also think it's got a very beautiful aesthetic ;)
Not only that but it’s a PERFECT size; just big enough
Great to see the Nova class back in Star Trek Picard S2! I know you sais it was just coincidence, but perfect timing for this video - it seems that Kurtzman's new team do know what they are doing afterall!!
Indeed, they always did :)
Another great video! Would love to see a video dedicated to comparing all the ships and what they replaced; .e.g. Nova replacing the Oberth, sovereign replacing the galaxy class (i think), Akira replacing Miranda etc etc.... would really flesh out the design lineage of starfleet. Plus with your great writing and story telling I just know you could make it all flow perfectly. Cheers!
Great suggestion! Thank you, Ill look in to it :)
While not the Nova teased in the old TNG Tech Manual I have always been fond of the canon Nova. Makes sense as a class to fit some gaps with a fleet that might otherwise focus too much on larger vessels. Your take on the Nova class overall mostly fits with much of my own headcanon for the design which is always fun to see.
...And the gelato machine. Sadly, this long-favored amenity was missing from the Nova's final iteration as well for the purposes of practicality.
Tactical variants are to be referred to as Supernovas
I second this motion! ;)
Always loved the nova class, especially its refit version. It has a more sovereign influence in it with a good touch of intrepid class, thus a lovely mix
Absolutely, I love starship lineage ;)
As a replacement for the obreth class it was awesome at least it could fight and defend its self unlike the obreth which was simply a target thanks for sharing this with us =)
You're very welcome :)
Always liked this class. It's a good looking ship. Great job as always definitely looking forward to the next one!
Thank you so much Carey :)
Great video as always. Nova class was great as multi purpose role with a small profile in combat. The landing ability was great for research when you took the whole lab planet side.
Couldn't agree more! :)
The Nova Class is my Fav Starship aesthetically of all time!
Its gorgeous!
Wow, this was a very great video.
I really liked the connection between real life and the series about the development of this class.
Thank you so much :)
WOW what Awesome! Infromtion Episode 222) Truth OR Myth BETA- The Nova Class
Thank you so much Dominik :)
I am seriously loving how you got Admiral Brand into this video, she I think would be what my posh grandmother would be like if Starfleet was around today, but with a posh British accent of course.
I liked how through TNG we saw a heck of alot of the admiralty, I think the best with a stern look but could be a hoot when off duty would be Admiral Blackwell, she comes across as alot sterner than Necheyev, who is my absolute favourite of the TNG admirals overall.
Anyway enogh of the Admiralty, the Nova class.
It is indeed a good next step for a scout science vessel to replace the Oberth class of ship and I was impressed in Equinox how the shields would only take I think around 45 seconds to recharge to 100% but of course in battle that could be a slight issue, you would need to pump power to the engines and use evasive measures while the shields were down and recharging as alot can happen in those 45 seconds of full vulnerability.
It was nice to see the ship design from a proposed USS Defiant from the DS9 Technical Manual make it on screen as there were a few variants of this deign if I recall for that ship, and then we got the Defiant class that was finalised on, and so it is good that one of the designs made its way on to Voyager.
I wonder personally if they did a technical manual on the USS Voyager as they did at least the Enterprise D and Deep Space Nine.
With the sounds of things the Nova had similar style cabins like the Defiant and maybe Excelsior class, bunk style shared quarters, maybe senior officers having their own quarters while the rest of the crew shared.
I am trying to recall what Janeway stated bout the Equinox at least wasnt it a short term science vessel, not a deep space tactical vessel, and so that would explain why there are no holodecks and such luxuries you would find on larger vessels, for ships on short term assignments it makes sense I guess to cut out the luxurues to make way for scientific, exploratory cargo and tactical systems as well, while it is a modern day vessel there will have to be cutbacks somehow so those crews better make sure they pack plenty of books and such for their assignments.
the side by side shot next to a Sovereign class was very good I have to say.
I do love a beefed up science vessel that can defend itself with no issues, very much like the Rhode Island against 2 Negh'var class vessels in Endgame, when I first saw that ever on VHS i was gobsmacked thinking Harry was a fool to take them both on, but we saw that the Rhode Island had teeth and disabled one and then went after the other easily.
A very good video, Starfleet needs to really have a think about those Miranda class ships though being somewhat out of date for battles - how many were lost during the Dominion war alone compared to the Excelsior class that even by that time the design was over 100 years old the Excelsior class with modern technology was still formidable, so along with the Oberth as they have they need to now get rid of the Miranda class and have a replacement in for that class that can last longer in fleet battles.
Nevertheless, a great beta canon video as always, hats off you YOUR unique take on a vessel and its design history and such and long may you continue to create such great content.
Peace and Long Life sir
One of my favorite ships, I would love to see more of her.
No rubber ducky room? That the whole point of a starship. 😉
Love this ship design. May be small but she is a beauty.
Like this ship 😀
I feel sorry for any Star Fleet officer who was assigned to the Oberth class its predecessor, I bet the all had to were red shirts.I 😁
Poor, Poor, Oberth Class :(
Always loved this class, such a good looking ship.
Yes it is!
Even with the Nova coming online to replace it, there are still 2 uses for the Oberth design:
1.) Training vessels/Target Practice for Academy cadets
2.) Remotely piloted drones that can be flown into a Borg cube at warp speeds to destroy said cube, acting like a 24th century analog to a smart bomb or cruise missile.
2 great uses
One of my favourite ships . I love the 4 warp engine design and the defiant variant
Love the aft torp but no idea where it could be. I really like the evolution of front saucer torpedos like Prometheus
Its aft :P
9:29 when I first saw the voy 2 parter Equinox that was my first thought that the nova-class reminds me of a baby sovereign-class
How do you feel about seeing the Nova Class and Steamrunner Class in the latest trailer for Picard Season 2?
I feel great and excited about it :)
I have no idea why, but I simply adore the smaller Starfleet vessels.
The Nova, Defiant, New Orleans, Oberth and Danube classes are all some of my most favorite designs.
It is a beautiful ship for a great two-parter in VGR history. The Nova class was a warship version of the Oberth class and like the Oberth it had its weakness(short range).
It was like a Intrepid little sister.
If not a tv miniseries, the Equinox needed a novel adaptation.
That's a nice looking ship. The Oberth class never made sense to me, this ship clears up my reservations nicely.
I'm loving my Eaglemoss XL model of this ship. It's awesome!
Glad to see the Nova class coming back to Trek in season 2 of Star Trek Picard along with the Steamrunner class. Some of the newer ship designs are just getting to out there for me!!
Love this class. The Rhode Island variant is beautiful.
Pity it is in an alternative timeline. It may have never existed in the primary timeline.
Amazing amazing amazing
I don't remember the galaxy class refit :^
This ship is most appealing. I thought and still fo think the Oberth class was simply gorgeous when first seen in TOS. To know it had long life in use as a science exploration ship is very satisfying. To know this Nova class could be so easily adaptable and versatile harkens back to basic American ingenuity. It's look is "sporty", like the classic Mustang or Corvette, yet deceptively, can be as aggressive as a mongoose. It works for me, I love it!
Always loved this ship really wish we had gotten to see it a little more than we actually did.
Good little ship
Little?
I always liked the Nova Class. I want one for my personal yacht. 😁
Starship go vroom! Comment feeds the algorithm gods.
They absolutely do! :)
In the current Star Trek RPG there is a beautiful story of an early Nova Class vessel who's engine outrunned the rest of the ship leaving it stranded in front of several Gorn cruisers. The Gorn commander found this so hillarious she spared the crew.
Either Revell or Round2 NEED to make a 1/670 or 1/532 model of this wonderful ship (hay, they did that with the Oberth class after all…that sucker is now in 1/350 scale!!!)
Glad someone mention that.
I really like the look of the Nova, I have to say I love these videos.
The Nova Class is very beautiful ship especially with the refit love it
It was cool to have a new ship introduced that wasn’t bigger, badder, or faster than what we already had seen. The design is decent, too. Only thing I’m not fond of is the primary hull deflector. I think the Rhode Island version is a bit more crisp and logical
In STO, my Nova-Class only needs one Gravity-Well in the final round of the Ninth Rule of Aquisition to destroy all incoming Enemies.
Another excellent video. I much prefer the version of the Nova class as configured in "Endgame." Still, it is a cool design and story you've created for it is very good, as always. :)
Really have a softspot for the nova ever since we saw it first in equinox
I really like it I think it's a great little ship and speaking from a military point of view and experience star fleet would be a fool not to keep it around just update it and refit ( we do it all the time in this century) live long and prosper 🖖
Great video! Have you ever done a video on the Galaxy class refit? I mention it because you mentioned it in this video and it would be very interesting to see the differences between the original Galaxy and the refit.
One of my favorites… err, where’s the impulse engine? Lol
I love the Nova SOOO much!!! Great Video!!!
200 years, and it was *still* an effective combat ship, aganst the sphere builders. teeth, indeed.
I always thought the Nova class was a cool looking design. I really like the up grade like the Rhode Island.
A major upgrade for Starfleet Science (BESPA) from the Oberth. I still remember the Oberth profile from the first mission of Starfleet Academy where you get to.choose between the 3 cannon ships.of the Film era for your first simulator mission, Oberth class was the only class to lack Weapons on the rear of the ship it also implied that the shield generator was primarily forward with no rear shield generator. Basically the Grissom was boned because the Klingon gunner fired a torpedo at the aft when he was ordered to disable it. The Nova class takes a Defient pathfinder design that looks like they tested a smaller prototype version of the Sovereign class nacelles on and they just replaced the tactical rooms with science labs. In fact the flatter sovereign style nacelle kind of fits in with the prototype "Galaxy" nacelle the Ambassador class had its the new outer body but its shaped to accept the previous class shape of warp coil.
I see this as a basic multipurpose ship, but it can only do one role at a time. Unlike the multimission cruisers, this is a science ship OR a scout OR a destroyer.
I really like the Nova class it's a science vessel that can kick butt
I like to think of the Nova Class as a "Pocket" Sovereign Class.
It's ships and lore like this that make a franchise feel more real and lived in. Sure a Sovereign is cool but with only a handful ever made what's the chance you'd ever see one. To many planets in the Federation I'm sure it's classes like the Nova that are the real Starfleet.
Some vids on the smaller form starships would be nice. Ships like the Ventute scout, Danube runabout and Delta Flyer. Not quite a starship, not quite a shuttle craft.
I've always said that the Nova class looks like a Sovereign-Intrepid class offspring if not hybrid.
I would hope by the Long Island variant it would have a much higher warp range, something similar to an Intrepid class.
I always thought the Nova class would’ve made a really good escort and/or a light cruiser, with a medium range science or medical component as a secondary mission capability.
The Nova class is one of my favorite little ships.
I still struggle in my head-canon with the specification of various craft. In my mind smaller=weaker and slower, but that doesn't really seem to be the case with the Nova having similar weapons and shields to a Galaxy class, though a much slower warp drive.
It would be interesting to see a line up of ships all within the same design era and how their roles and specifications compare. I don't know, perhaps all ships built within the same period have nearly idential performance despite different sizes and roles.
As they say, size doesnt matter :P Look at the Defiant for example, 3 times stronger then the Season 1 TNG Galaxy Class!
Add ablative armor and quantum torpedoes. Be scrappy.
They say there are no such things as bad ships, only bad captains. They lied. The nova was a marked improvement on the Oberth. The runabout was a marked improvement on the Oberth. My nephews tricycle is a marked improvement on the Oberth. Basically... OBERTH SUCKS!!!!!
Lol I LOVE the Tricycle Class though :P
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics better than the Oberth. Lol

Where are its impulse engines? I have trouble spotting them in the design.

Great video, but I think you may have missed the amazing service of a certain Captain Kim 😊
Lol no, I didnt miss it :P As that happened in a different timeline, we dont know if Kim ever even became a Captain, let alone of a Nova Class Variant! :P
If my model is anything to go by the warp engines will just fall off
LOL
I hope we get the Akira, Norway and Steamrunner Classs in Picard. Those ships are underrated.
Well along with the Nova Class being seen in the New Trailer for Season 2 of Picard, so is a Steamrunner Class... Both outside and i side that ship!

My main character in Star Trek Online Captains a Nova
Was the subject of all future tech that Voyager used in the last episode to escape and destroy the Borg and what happened to it?
No holodeck, no swimming pool, no bowling alley but does it have a pool for cetacean ops?
The WiFi never worked on these things!
As a patrol and exploration type of ship, it's alright. The problem is that Starfleet in particular just makes their vessels far too spindly. They're built like giraffes, when they need to be built like rhinos or elephants. Militant races like Klingon and Cardassian ships should be tough and dangerous like snapping turtles or big powerful crabs...while cunning species like Romulans or Ferengi should have ships that reflect the concepts of crocodiles or mantis shrimp, being stealthy and/or having absurd single-burst power. Something like the Andorians or Vulcans should be somewhere between the militant and cunning range...with the Vulcans obviously becoming pacifists at some point.
i dont really see it as spindly. wherever you see a vunerable part of a ship, i always just assume its armored to hell from the ground up. like, it would be little more than a solid plate of duranium minus a few required tubes for turbolifts or various conduits.
Wondering what the name the star ship in star trek picard
Can I please request a breakdown of the Tempest class escort patrol ship she's a STO ship rather small but well armed I think it's a great ship
Could you do a video on what Starfleet did with decommissioned vessels? We know Voyager was turned into a museum, but what would they do with obsolete vessels like the Oberth class ships? Just let them run until catastrophic failure? Were they sent to shipyards and scrapped to use the resources to build newer ships? Were they used as a sort of "training grounds" for newly minted Lt. Commanders, Commanders or Captains?
The United States Air Force has a Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. 4,000 aircraft are stored there, some of them are kept intact in “inviolate” storage for future use. It would make some sense (even for the Federation. LOL) If they did something similar for their older vessels. In TNG, there was Surplus Depot Z15, a Federation scrap yard for decommissioned ships. There might also be civilian transfers and sales.
All of the 'cutout primary hull' designs look so much better without the cutouts.
I disagree... Like all things, some look good and some look bad. Just like some non cut out designs look good and some look very bad! Blanket statements just show bias!
The Nova class has been seen in the Picard Season 2 trailer, so cant say its been retired just yet ;)
Well I can, as beta canon says it was retired in the late 26th Century... And Picard takes place in the 24th-25th Century... So it has no bearing on that since we know its still around during the Battle of Proceyon 5 in the early 26th Century!
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics touché :)
I'm liking this ship, i prefer the intrepid class to this one. all ships should have holo decks, especially the small ones, that wouldn't have room for other recreational facilities. my favorite ships are; tos Enterprise, Voyager, Defiant. nx 01 enterprise, never really liked tng enterprise.
What is the biggest Shuttlecraft it can hold
Can you review the Protostar?
One of my favorite starships. After seeing a Nova class next to a Sovereign class, I now have to wonder if there was an intentional decision to make the Sovereign a giant Nova Class, or Super Nova. Any chance of exploring that possibility in the Beta canon?
It was just coincidence, showing starship lineage ;)
I never understood the Nova class slow speed…topping out at warp 8. It has 11 type 10 phasers and 3 torpedoes tubes…shields comparable to the Intrepid. The Nova has power, why is it so slow?
it simply wasn't necessary. top speed is, quite frankly, a very rare feature for a starship to actually use. how many times do we see ships go maximum warp, even for short times, let alone extended ones? even voyager never bothered with its true max warp. it only seemed to go warp 9.5 at best.
Starfleet was loosing to many oberth classes.....being killed by 1 torpedo and such.... To many crews kept dying...
so which class of science ship replaced the nova class?
When? As we see they are potentially still in service in 2401.
I have a small request. Constancy in running light green and red sides. This is critical in shipping and close order navigation.
The majority IS consistent, however, in a lot of 3d models, Im constrained to however the 3d modeler has put them... So any issues with such things should be directed at them!
Poor Oberth. I understand having to replacing them, but still.
It was time... :P
🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖/🖖🖖
Am I the only one who noticed the Nova had no impulse engines?
Yes!
I wondered about that as well...🤔 Maybe they are retractable and only come out when used??
I also noticed that there are two deflector dishes. Any info on how they were used? Maybe the main one for not running into space debris and the smaller one, in the saucer section for scientific sensors (scouting, mapping, etc.), or the other way around??
@@earlware4322 I think that the top shuttlebay was supposed to be the impulse engine. A small ship that size hardly needs two. And I think your theory about the deflectors make sense. Or possibly the smaller one was for mission specific specialized equipment
