You should have see how he was dominating junior with the Océanic based on skating ability ALONE. Putting aside IQ, stick handling, determination, etc. That one skill was enough to dominate this league. At 16yo, not a 20 yo was able make him fall his skate. Kid had so much stronger leg, than anyone else, for his age. It translated very well to the NHL.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT. I AM A FREAKING BOSTON SPORTS FAN, BUT IT'S SO ABUNDANTLY OBVIOUS THAT WATCHING THIS GUY PLAY IS A TRUE PRIVILEGE. It perplexes me to no end when butt hurt fans can't stomach how profoundly he embarrasses their team, so they just hate on him instead. But their team's "star" players were playing Xbox and noshing on nachos when Crosby was putting in thousands and thousands of hours a year at perfecting the utmost nuances of his game. We should all just pause and appreciate that HE ROUTINELY DOES THINGS NO OTHER PLAYER CAN DO. It is special to watch, period. I knew about the kid as a phenom in Cole Harbor Nova Scotia back in 2002. When Pitt drafted him on 7-31-05, I was stoked beyond belief to see what this 17-18 yr old kid could do in the NHL, given how he'd been deking players a half a decade older and twice his size since he was 14. Crosby did not disappoint. It blows my mind what he can do with a puck and how he consistently beats several defenders, even when they're necklining him, slashing, doing a whole tonne of shit...It's just... anyone who claims to be a hockey fan, who doesn't love this guy, in my eyes, they are either stupid, morally and spiritually bankrupt, or else they were never truly a hockey fan to begin with.
Okay, rant over. TLDR - Agreed. IMHO Crosby is the GOAT.

Crosby is such a masterpiece. It amazes me how he mixes his natural skill with vigorous training on all aspects of the game. His footwork, shot, the way he reads the play is just insane. This is why hockey is such a great game. It takes people who start as average people with a will and determination like no other who push themselves to the limit to become the best and get into the NHL. Amazing video!

    • @billvill61
      @billvill61 11 місяців тому

I'd say that he had a fair amount of innate ability. Look at old videos of him as a little kid (Squirts or PeeWee aged) and he is far and away the best player on the ice. Not saying that he didn't put in an incredible amount of work (he did), just that he has it all; talent, drive, intelligence, and an incredible will to win.

I love the look on the goalies faces when he scores those highlight level goals. They look around like how the hell did he get the puck in the net like that, they then look behind them to see who it was and the "ohh that makes sense now" face is just priceless. He's the one guy that no matter how stupid he makes you look be it player or goalie, it's accepted solely because the greatest player in the game did it to you.

  • @PhilDesmarais

These videos (excellent, insightful, entertaining) are a very good argument in favor of "diversification". Out on local rinks, I see a lot of people hyperfocus on a single aspect that brings them great satisfaction, which however distracts them from working on other things they might actually learn to enjoy, if they gave it time. A good example being exactly this video: footwork, edgework, skating sideways, pivoting for puck protection, using your skate blades as "extra stick blades" .... there's just so much to add to the toolbox. And Sidney shows it makes a massive difference.

I love those skates! I'm using one of those myself and ofc I'm not a Sidney Crosby but I feel like those skates fits perfectly for people who are using a lot of edges and instant sudden turns.

Nah, That's still Gretzky, Gretzky is smaller than Crosby and he was even more difficult to get the puck off of, you could take away all of Gretzky's goals and he'd still be in 1st for most points ever, and he did it in 400 less games than Jagr who's 2nd in overall points. Gretzkys records are damn near untouchable. Crosby is definitely the best of this current time, but he's not going to even come close to Gretzky.

People must not let their blind hatred for Crosby cloud their judgment. Crosby is hands down the best player of our generation, and arguably a top 5 all-time. His skills are in every area of the game of hockey is practically a perfect 10, elite. Match that along with his mental strength and his character (other intangibles), he just leaves everyone behind in the dust. Most great players are even lucky if they are elite in a couple areas of hockey. But to be elite in every area of the game, that is what we call "special", something that we only reserve for a handful of players in the entire history of the NHL.

I'm one of those crazy people who likes the skating of good hockey players more than most figure skating. the fact that hockey players can do what they do while pushing a stick while trying to get a small rubber disk and fighting against other guys is amazing to me. I love watching videos like this. Crosby's footwork is mesmerizing.

Seriously I've watched so much hockey and so many player's highlights and just regular shifts by them in games, datsyuk and Crosby are the only two guys that I say to myself by myself out loud "wow". Like this video just is incredible. He is like if you had to build a perfect player he would be the stereotype for it, and datsyuk you literally just can't explain. He does stuff that literally you've never seen players do and to do it in the NHL just makes your jaw drop. As a Detroit fan I watched him every night and there were always at least like 3 or 4 plays that never made highlights but you would just laugh out loud because you had never seen it before. Sid and pav just always make good decisions with the puck, they make everyone on the ice with them better, and they both are threats on the ice no matter if they are in the slot, behind the net, or 180 feet away from the goal. I remember watching that assist I the finals and out loud said to my friend "holy crap, did you see Crosby rich there." I would give a slight edge to datsyuk because I truly believe there has never been a player with more skill than him then you combine that with being one of the best defensive forwards ever and his off the charts vision and iq I think he edges Crosby but Crosby is right there and then a big drop off to everyone else like mcdavid, getzlaf, Tavares, kucherov, and Kane. Again Crosby is like the perfect player. I saw someone describe it perfectly on watching datsyuk "it's like if you watch enough hockey you recognize all the plays, movements, and strategy as hockey plays and your brain processes it. But when you watch datsyuk it's like stuff you've never seen and your brain doesn't recognize it as hockey and you just don't know what to think of plays he makes." Great vid on one of the best ever.

After the double Stanley Cup wins of the last 2 years, it is worth taking another look at this hockey hero in action. Setting his moves to music is no problem - he does seem to take hockey to a level of art.

McDavid has great speed, a great shot and stick handling ability, but he doesn’t have this.
Crosby has slowed down but he’s still incredible and still does this on a daily basis. Greatest player of the 21st century. Third best player ever.

This is a great example of why aspects of figure skating transfer over to make you a better hockey player, Plenty of Hockey players I talk to tell me edgework, balance, and flexibility that transposes from Figure skating is the biggest edge they can build over other players and any serious hockey player will invest time and practice hours into real edgework and balance,
At my local rink at least half of all the hockey players take figure, or have taken figure skating in the past to learn these principals

I was living at Rimouski when he was playing there. Everytime the Océanic would play on week-end the city just shutdown. The city was either at the game or listening to it on TV. The whole city was living to the rythm of Crosby. It was unique and its saying consedering its was very few years after the Océanic won the Cup with Lecavalier and Richards.
Remember working in a restaurant at the time and we used to call work night during Océanic era : Free money nights. Restaurant was empty everytimes. I know many people that met him at the time, every single person that told me the met him, spoke about him highly. Very kind and polite apparently, when he had all the reason for having the big head.
Im so happy that the many hits he took to the head during his career didnt stop is career early. I was very scared at some point.

I've been watching hockey almost all my adult life, but show me this video a few weeks ago and I would have been "meh..".
My son started hockey this year. I never played hockey and my skating is horrible, so I go on the ice with him during his practice and try to do the same thing as them.
Now after a few weeks practicing, watching NHL and i'm amazed on how good the players are.
This video shows skills that I never cared about before, and now i'm freaking amazed..
