    I am glad to know that through the years of speaking english in the USA I picked up and used these phrasal verbs casually.
    The human brain has amazing ability to learn any new language just by simply hearing it spoken by native speakers apart from formally learning it like you did which is excellent.

    Back up is also a prepesitional verb, meaning simply going or driving backwards, in reverse. Such as back up to exit the driveway.

    The preposition 'up' after a verb gives the sense of full semantic strength meaning of the verb. Equivalent for 'shut up' could be shut it tight. You've been doing an excellent job, Antonio. Greetings from Brazil.

    I am British, and wish to point out that Americans love to use two (or three) words where one would do. That is why many of the phrasal verbs here are from the US but are being spread by the US domination of the media. Incidentally, "back up" meaning repeat is probably a figurative form of telling someone to "back up" (US) their car? (I would say "reverse" or "back").
