There are a lot of areas where there are wet rocks, scree and moraine. Maybe a mile at the max. Currently have the Brooks cascadia 16 and happy with it for most trails. Have the merrel moab ventilator with angle support for boots. Planning to take both. Do you think they would do well in a terrain with scree? What is the lightest boot you would recommend (one that can possibly take a crampon)?
I know all too well about shoes being too tight. All my toes are hammer and my little one misshapen. But the big problem I have is my big toe on my right foot has a broken tended , so it sticks way too the left . It doesn't hurt anymore . But finding a shoe wide enough is difficult .
I have similar Merrells. Light, flexible and good grip. Use for day hikes. For hikes with a weight load… it is boots all the way. I need the protection from the ground. Must protect the feet at all cost.
Altra Timp are my fav just now, way more comfy then Lone Peaks and Olymp. Tested all these on ling distance here in Scotland and yeah easy to say I recommend them to everyone and my partner also has these + Superfeet Trail insoles!
Nice review and great effort putting this video together. I especially love the drone video! Agree, Altra shoes are not as wide and roomy toe box as originally and quality has reduced over 10+ years. Also, too narrow a shoe can be a massive contributor to shin splints. Like you said, toes need to splay and if they're restricted you'll likely feel it in the muscles on the front of your lower leg.

I'm on my first pair of Whitin road running shoes (I used Altra road for 10+ years) which are super cheap Amazon and I've been pleasantly surprised. They're more firm but super wide so I'm finding them super comfortable even after a long road run.
yeah wide toe boxes are key. But I found Ultraventures too narrow still, hurt my feet in the Alps last year when I could not find Terraventures anywhere. I use Terraventures 3 years now, 3 mm drop, thinner but confident on the rocks. Salomon killed my feet in 2014, like ballet point shoes. I bought the largest Hoka Speedgoat made and it was just nowhere near wide enough. also used Altra Lone peaks but I could not adjust to 0 drop at all, and they never had a size that fit properly. Terraventures are The Ones for now but I would like one with more cushion.
ya that the problem I was looking at the only cushioned topo was the ultraventures OR if you go to a road shoe which I don't want to do. The MT-4s are Great but just lack cusion for longer days

I'd also recommend the Xero Scrambler Low: wide toe box, deep chevron-shaped lugs, lightweight, zero-drop, can be worn with or without the removable insole depending on how "barefoot" you want the feel. The sole is made by Michelin based on their mountain bike tire tech, and I can say from experience (I've been using them for over four months on similar trails to you here in mid-Vancouver Island) the grip is *amazing*.
I've been looking at those Xeros I'll have to work my way up.... down to the xero drop. Nice to hear first hand experience with them for the same area here I'm hiking.
How do you not mention Salomons? Great grips, great variety in stability- I love them. Also, you don’t recommend Goretex unless you’re crossing rivers?? There’s no snow or mud where you live?
I mentioned snow in the video which is the only situation I use goretex, I put 2 clips of me snowshoeing when I talked about it. For summer it makes more sense to not have goretex and have the shoe dry out faster. I did mention salomons and how they are way too skinny of a shoe for me, too cramped.

I haven't tried Altras myself but I do read a lot of comments and reviews which is what led me to the Topos as everyone is switching to those.

Oh gosh. How I’d love to have such a line up of shoes!!!🤪. I just tried on 20 pairs and can’t find anything good enough for my wide foot!
