  • Starship launched four days ago, June 6th, on it's fourth test flight, (IFT-4/FLT-4)
    The vehicle successfully made it through reentry, despite major damage to both forward flaps. The Starship upper stage vehicle made a controlled descent to the surface of the Indian ocean. Once at around 800 meters up, the vehicle initiated it's iconic flip and landing maneuver. Despite all odds, Starship S29 somehow managed to successfully land intact, 6km off of the targeted splashdown site, due to the previously mentioned control surface damage.

    I wonder how big the damage was to the other flaps that we couldn't see. Everyone is just praising that flap for surviving but there is a high chance that all the other flaps were just as badly damaged. So send some love to those flaps too. lol

      Might be too late here but apparently they weren't as badly damaged, with the aft flaps losing tiles but staying intact and less damage on the other nose flap

    The ship didn't go all the way straight in, the last part with the large bump was the ship on it's side hitting the water, much like the booster. Just continue your simulation to follow that through and it's complete. I do believe the ship was on it's tail for some moments until it finally toppled over. Great job. Lot's of us at NSF appreciate your work.

      you can tell when it tips over because at 0:44 the speed is low and the orientation vertical, ie hovering with slight descent, then at 0:47 the speed suddenly increases and the orientation rotates, ie it tips over.

    the flap hinge failed due to deceleration, up to 5G, and missing support at bottom part, shown in the image beautifully. great piece of work.

    Nice including the small fires at the end of the gliding phase, the only reasonable source of lighting in those conditions.
    Are you sure the flap was really hanging only by the actuator in the end? I don't think the bellyflop would have worked in that case

      Elon tweeted that the forward flaps were damaged, but the one we didn’t see wasn’t as bad. The aft flaps were fine but possibly lost some tiles.

      As Taurus' comment says, Elon said the other flaps also sustained tile loss and extreme heating but they didn't melt

      Elon said that the aft flaps didnt really recieve damage. The left foward flap had minor damage but the flap we all saw definitely took the most damage yet still did its job.

    I’ve been curious about this tho, was the engine UI glitching during this landing? The engine diagram on the bottom right that indicates the engine activation was not lit throughout the entire landing, but there was still light in the camera and control says there was a landing burn. So I’m assuming they were lit with evidence such as animations like this?

    Before the burn, was the nose pitching downwards intentional or a cause of the damaged flap?
    Also in terms of the animation, its good but at 0:35 the flames by the skirt seem too slow and not reacting to the velocity the ship was on (if that makes sense)

      Nosedive was indeed because of the damaged flap

    I’m confused , so does it sink to the bottom to get retrieved after ? Would a platform be out there for it to land on? Can someone explain please 😅

    • @TheSpaceEngineer
      @TheSpaceEngineer  2 місяці тому

      This was just a test flight, they were unsure if it was even going to land at all much less land on target. So it's just out there in the Indian ocean, eventually sinking.

    • @IAlmightyGaming
      @IAlmightyGaming 2 місяці тому

      @@TheSpaceEngineer so is the end goal of this program for it to land safely for it to be reused again?

    • @canaancopeland5059
      @canaancopeland5059 2 місяці тому

      @@IAlmightyGaming So this test tested that it could make it though re entry and it did! but it was not on target due to the flap damage. So they will test again to see if they get on target. again sinking it. but eventually the goal is to land back at the launch site like the booster. but for now they are testing int he ocean where there is nothing to damage if it crashes
      hope that helps!

    If you made this clip with S29, I guess it'll only make sense that you'll make another B11 reconstruction analysis video like you did for B10, right?

    • @TheSpaceEngineer
      @TheSpaceEngineer  3 місяці тому +3

      I do not believe that will be necessary as nothing was really new and we actually have camera views from multiple angles of it. Plus that was an absolute PAIN to set up and render taking multiple weeks.

    • @vmcprojects
      @vmcprojects 2 місяці тому

      @@TheSpaceEngineer Gotcha, I understand it takes tons of work to make the kind of videos you make (I'm an amateur at Blender 3D, so I get the pain). Still, I've been watching the B11 landing footage from a buoy that SpaceX released. I saw that B11 had a fairly big mach cone before it relit the center engines, but one of them failed to restart. I was wondering had SpaceX decided to relight the center engines about 10 seconds earlier (at a lower throttle), maybe that would give the engines a better survival rate?
