  • This tutorial shows how to quickly create a furniture model from a photo in Sketchup.
Sometimes, you find an item of furniture such as a table that you want to include in a Sketchup model. However, if there’s no 3D model available for it, or it is an unusual shape, how can you model it without spending hours? Fortunately, you can create a pretty convincing model using just photos and dimensions in Sketchup.
For this Sketchup tutorial, I will be modelling a Restoration Hardware console table using the photo and dimensions shown on the RH website.
    STEPS
    00:00 Introduction
00:20 Get furniture photo and dimensions
00:36 Model furniture dimensions in Sketchup
00:56 Import photo of the furniture
02:28 Add openings to the model
02:55 Create and add details to the model
04:48 Map the textures onto the sides of the furniture
    05:54 Optional: soften edges
    06:24 Finished model
    SUMMARY OF STEPS
    1. Create a box of the overall furniture dimensions
    2. Use good photos of the furniture and map them to the faces of the box
    3. Create openings where needed in the furniture. Additionally, you can use the photos to accurately place them
    4. Use the soften edges tool once finished to make the furniture component look more realistic.
