Tom Waits is an American treasure
A stream of advertising tropes delivered with tongue-firmly-in-cheek. It's actually a thing of beauty to take marketing schlock and somehow make it brilliant :)
It's not only -- or even primarily -- modern advertising. It's the history of the medicine show, the Atlantic City pitchman, the carnival spieler, and everyone else on the grift from the 19th century to today. Learn your f'n history, you mark!
Tom Waits, thanks for existing
For most, it is difficult to grasp the greatness of Waits' lyrics - THE GREATEST AMERICAN POET ... as E.A.P.
The line in the song “The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away” gives you a hint about the song. It’s all quotes in print advertising and commercials on T.V.
Tom Waits really wanted to be a beat musician from the 1950s and hang out with Jack Kerouac and his literary gang❤
Love "Medley: Jack & Neal / California, Here I Come"
Tom waits is my facorite american songwriter of all time.
Tom Waits is a deep well worth dipping into. His catalog is full of sometimes strange, but always brilliant songs. He is nothing if not unique.
Amazing artist!
" The Piano Has Been Drinking "!!
"My necktie is asleep"
Creampuff Casper Milquetoast
Never heard this before but the sarcasm was dripping off his tongue loved it.
Omg no one reacts to Tom Waits..i love Tom Waits i'm so happy. Thank you.
“Innocent when you dream” is one of my favorite Mike Waits’ songs. He is definitely a national treasure. 👍
.This was the first Tom Waits song I ever heard when I was a kid. There's a shton of great Tom Waits out there.
The song is a social statement about how we are bombarded with advertising & consumerism
Filipino Box Spring Hog, Hell Broke Luce, Get behind the Mule, Hold On, Telephone Call From Istanbul, Chocolate Jesus.... so many good Tom Waits songs. He's also an actor.
Tom has one of the creepiest songs ever made. It's called
" What's He Building ( in there)"
I would suggest saving it for the Halloween Playlist!
Every sentence in the song are sales pitchs that you could see and hear on TV, magazines,, radio....he strings them together.
And he's just improvising. Genius.
More Tom Waits! Check out Hell Broke Luce
Love Tom. ❤😊
Hurry up and don't miss a bargain. Be the lucky first ten standing in line folks. He says "dollar" so many times...
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away, LOL! 😆
Love Tom Waits! Thanks for checking him out, Brad. This is not his best song, but it is a good early one. His style has changed over the years but he has always retained his humor. He also has a lot of theatricality in his live shows. Try "The Earth Died Screaming" and anything off of "Rain Dogs". I also recommend songs like "Chocolate Jesus", "Tango Till They're Sore", "The Heart of Saturday Night", "Jersey Girl",and "Hold On". There is a great skit with a wonderful performance of "This Piano Has Been Drinking" from a fake talk show called Fernwood Tonight that you would love also
This is still one of the funniest songs I've ever heard, nearly 40 years on from when I first heard it. And yes, you got to the point of the song in the end 👍🏽
The key to this song:
"The large print giveth and
the small print TAKETH away!"
Thanks!
before there was rapping over hiphop beats, there was scatting over a drumbeat and a saxophone. they are richly connected because both hiphop and jazz/blues originated from black americans. tom waits' biggest influence was reportedly louis armstrong, one of the founding fathers of jazz and blues, black music legend from the 1930s. i love it!!!!
No Brad it’s not a stream of random thoughts
What he’s doing is throwing out every Advertising Cliche from the 20th Century in a Carnival barker’s cadence
And of course Carnival barker’s job is to sell you on anything and everything the carnival has to offer as if it’ll be the best experience of your life
It’s a trope played in many comedy movies in the 1930’s with the legendary actor/comedian WC Fields who’s famous line in movies when he’s playing a street corner salesman ( actually a con man ) was “Get away from me Kid ya bother me”…
( Tom actually says the line at the end of the song)
…as right when he was making his pitch to the folks on the street some little kid would pull his pants leg to ask a question and WC would give the kid a subtle kick and say the line
What you have to know about Tom Waits is he was an artist in his 20’s in the mid to late 1970’s who’s persona was a scraggly Jazz singer from 1930’s
basically a raconteur roustabout troubadour straight out of a late 1930’s early 1940’s Film Noir Gangster movie
Hi.. That description was just perfect beautiful actually when someone totally gets and absorbs him. Loved his music & performance since i was 17 ,over 60 now. Some of his more 'unique' stuff i didn't really like.. but didn't really listen to..Also loved every movie he's been in..Small Change..Heart of Saturday Night..(whole albums)..Bad like me.. Downtown Train that video is awesome Jersey Girl ..Cold Cold Ground..On the Nickel..truly amazing. Grew up actually arguing defending both Waits & Dylan( can you believe that) yeah, so their voices are unconventional..and your point is?? ..i would say..not that i'd ever win but how does one deny genius..lol😅 anyway awesome comment✌
Preach!
My introduction to Tom Waits. Driving into Madison, WI on a spring day. It's a summary of capitalism. "We'll sell anything." Think snake oil salesmen.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Hahaha. Tom Waits wrote (and sang) the ultimate parody/compilation of television commercials. All of that stuff he's saying (well, almost all of it) is ripped straight from old TV commercials.
A company once copied that, and Tom sued the chair out from under them.
And that company was Frito-Lay
Everone gets that it's advertising jargon, no one picks up that its a tribute to the old boardwalk pitchman/carnival barker style of selling (hence the title...drawing the tip). A relic of the first half of the 20th century and the type of thing Waits loves
That's Tom Waits!!! You are on edge of a rabbit hole that contains some of America's most original music. Enjoy!!
Tom Waits Music is something different :)
"Songs are really just interesting things to be doing with the air." - Tom Waits, at his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He's amazing. Has some different styles, too. You should try "I Don't Wanna Grow Up", "Ol' 55", "Heartattack & Vine". Too many to list, the dude's amazing.
He was basically spewing lines from 50's commercials. It's all about the constant noise of advertising.
Tom Waits also has sued (and won) multiple cases against big corporations who would do "sound alike" versions of this and other songs. Won $2.6M from Frito Lay and another case against Volkswagen-Audi. Love him for this: He famously condemned musicians who used songs in commercials, saying: "If Michael Jackson wants to work for Pepsi, why doesn't he just get himself a suit and an office in their headquarters and be done with it."
Brad usually has a purely intellectual reaction to music, but look at this! He has been taken hold of. The music is in his BONES!
You got it 😅 it's a funny brillant song about salesman.✌
Me again on Tom Waits, Others songs he has done are vastly different "Romeo is bleeding" "gun street girl" "bad as me" "Telephone call from Istanbul" "down in the hole" also this song i am commenting on is about Commercialism. It's every TV ad ever made in one song.
Hi he's rapping about the drummers that want to sale us on anything. Sales persons use to be called drummers back in the day. Thank you.
Go to an auction. You will hear and recognise what Tom Waits is emulating.
The message is the message. Sale Hooks.
Whatever that product is, I want it!
It’s an indictment of capitalism.
He is mocking the sales pitch.
It's definitely mocking the slimey salesman archetype.
Asking for "The Meaning" of a piece of art (song, symphony, painting, film, whatever) is ALWAYS a mistake because an artwork with only one meaning is, at best, bad art.
You're too young to know, but this is (mostly) just old school advertising copy.
Dang it man. I was hoping you'd be more insightful, or at least curious enough to figure out what he's talking about.
At least have a reaction in your reaction video.
