  • Growing up in Roanoke, Virginia, I have always been intrigued by the Historic Railroad District just off of South Jefferson Street and Walnut Avenue. Back in early June 2014, I visited my hometown and took some time to capture some views from above. I am glad to know these old buildings will be re-used, re-purposed and re-strengthened for future businesses, dwellings, and best of all, public recreational areas. Enjoy!

I'd say you were on Wiley Dr. as that's where the transportation museum used to be. The rocket used to sit right beside the bride going over Wasena Park and was a part of the museum.

And it was a Jupiter IRBM, one of our City Council Members went to Huntsville Alabama and asked Warner Von Braun for a Missile to start our Transportation Museum.
Von Braun said they did not have any and the US Army would have to approve the transfer. But over lunch at the NASA Alabama center he told the other German Engineers about it and they started talking, they thought that they could put one together from discarded (stored) parts. Which over the next month they did, it was a nice project that they found a copy of all parts and when it was picked up said that they thought it was complete enough to fly.
About ten years ago they restored the bird, but thore out all the asbestos and most wiring... Now it can never fly ☺️.
Neither NASA or the US Army ever approved the transfer, just the Germans, Peenemünde Germans of Operation Paperclip.
