The dynamic between Dutch and Bronte is really interesting insofar as the games themes and Dutch’s character goes. Bronte is the “new” criminal. An early mafia man who profits off the illegal liquor business among other nefarious things. Unlike Dutch, who’s career has gotten him chased out of most of America and who’s “big scores” have recently left him with little profit and more dead friends, Brontë has achieved power and wealth. In their interactions Dutch is (until their last one) in the weaker position; taking insults from Brontë and in stark contrast to his usual charisma and authoritative aura, coming off like an awkward kid getting verbally bullied by the rich popular boys kindly-spoken insults and acting like he doesn’t mind it. I think Dutch is jealous of Brontë; he’s the kinda self-made libertarian tyrant that Dutch wanted to be. Is it of any surprise that he later said he “knows (brontes) type” and then basically describes him the same way Agent Milton would describe Dutch? It reinforces the theme that the world is changing and criminals like Dutch are being outmoded by newer, better criminals who know how to flourish in modern societies that can better enforce the law.
