  • I’ve taken some time to look at disparities in health outcomes in the Black community vs. every other racial grouping in the U.S. The numbers are pretty grim. And unfortunately, when we take a look at the mental health profile for Black people as a whole in the U.S., it’s no different.
Black people are statistically more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and they’re more likely to grapple with suicidal ideations. Yet we’re the group that is least likely to seek out help, and when we do, we’re more likely to receive poor quality care. In today’s podcast, I’m examining the reasons for these disparities, and looking at some ways in which we can begin to shift the needle on this troubling reality.

Thank you so much for this very informative topic. It’s very necessary.
The Blk community/America has a mental health crisis. There can’t be enough discussion regarding this topic until ever family understands that resolving this issue in our families will continuously hold us all back until we start to realize that we MUST work on our issues. From the dissolution of the family to accepting sexual preferences to the hatred of each other within our communities.

I'm glad to hear you have a radio show, because you have a really good voice for narration, very clear and understandable. I am neither black nor American, but the topic of mental health is important to me, so I enjoyed listening to this very informative and thoughtful presentation. Unfortunately Indigenous Australian people are in a similar situation, in terms of the disparity between health and mental health outcomes and access, compared to other demographic groups in Australia. There are a lot of people working with and within Indigenous communities to "close the gap", but unfortunately the people with the money and power to make a real difference are mostly white men who benefit directly and personally from the existing colonial power structure.
I think the distrust of medicine can also be related to historical examples of... non-consensual... medical experiments on and exploitation of black people. The Tuskagee experiment, Henrietta Lacks' cell cultures, forced sterilisation, among a long list of unethical experimentation and abuse (including in the 2020s, when four inmates in Arkansas were given, without their knowledge or consent, dangerously high doses of ivermectin to test it as a covid remedy). There are very real and good reasons for the black community to distrust white doctors and Western medicine, which the white men in power have repeatedly failed to really acknowledge or apologise for.

I don't understand the relatively low view counts on Dara's videos - is she bigger on other platforms? Am I missing something? It seems like a no-brainer that this channel would be hugely successful. She also speaks like (and has the comportment of) a seasoned, major youtuber. Either way, I'm glad I stumbled across the channel. If you're reading this Dara, I appreciate your work - thank you.
