Was 15 at time, was a big fan of the Seekers and The new Seekers and 65 yrs later I still play their music on my cherished 45s and LPs which I bought then. Sorry Melanie but this version is the best there is
This haunting dazzling song is a perfect example to listen to and feel and then quickly realize just how far down modern music has devolved within the past couple of decades.
I absolutely love this song, and boy, could the New Seekers ever sing! The female singers are just awesome, their rousing vocals make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. One thing's for sure. No one, but NO ONE makes music like this anymore.
I was 11 when the song came out it was popular in the fall of 1970 it's nice to put on the earbuds here in the year 2018 I hear all the wonderful instruments in the background just wonderful. German version to I think
For those wondering, the musicians are lead and backing vocalist Eve Graham, backing vocalist Lyn Paul, guitarists-backing vocalists Marty Kristian and Peter Doyle, and bassist-backing vocalist Paul Layton.
I was 14 at high school in New Zealand. The song made the top 10 here. The new seekers had some really sweet songs you could actually sing to. People used to sing songs together back in the 70.s. Don't think kids sing songs together any more. But then how do you sing along to heavy metal or rap?
Why does everybody have to think of something is better? Whatever happen to different? I'm sure none of you are musicians. It's ironic to say the least considering what the song is about.
@@beeweejr You like this song? Best version?... Please check Melanie and Miley Cyrus, the backyad sessions version, that is the best one. ua-cam.com/video/GX9A5vv-jOM/v-deo.html
I totally forgot about this song! I was 9 when this came out. I remember the lady across the yard used to like this song alot! Good childhood memories living in Ridgewood, NY
I can't agree with that. Melanie was the ultimate "Hippie Chick" who wrote and arranged this song. Her version is powerful as she rails against the music industry. The New Seekers didn't bring anything new to the music. It's just a cover of an Original. "Little Wing" is covered by all the great guitar players; but Jimi Hendrix INVENTED it!
I was 10 years old when this song came out, mainly into Motown and the Beatles solo careers, but my 42 year old Mom turned me on to this song, saying "You have to hear this record!" She was right, I loved it and it has aged very gracefully.
This was a much bigger hit in the US, as noted in another comment getting to #14 in October 1970. It would wind up being used a couple of times in commercials years later.
Esta buena canción la compuso MELAINE y la canto y la publico en el año 1970 y la versiono THE NEW SEEKERS y la cantaron y la publicaron en el mismo año 1970
I wonder if Melanie likes what the New Seekers did to her song?
I hope so. They did an awesome cover.
I always liked this much better than Melanie's version
Oh ya.....they did it much better!
no, they didn't.
They tied it up in a plastic bag and turned it upside down.

Agree
Oh definitely!
Truly have to agree, Melanie was great with her roller skates and the Brand New Key😊

I liked the French music
This song hit #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the autumn of 1970. The definitive version, IMHO.
Definitive yes
Love the New Seekers. They were such a polished band.
Sorry Melanie, I know you wrote this song....but this is the best version!

Very meaningful to my generation, no matter who sings it.

Was this song dedicated to Macca after Phil Spector's version of The Long and Winding Road?
😊
I am surprised to find that someone else had done this song before Melanie.
They didn't. New Seekers (May, 1971), Melanie (April, 1970). Melanie wrote it.
They didn't. Melanie recorded it first.
A very good trick since Melanie wrote it.
Name me another Top 40 hit that included a tuba ...
Very few, but Montego Bay by Bobby Bloom comes to mind, also in 1970.
Just tune in to any Latino radio station.
Lo mejor d los años 70 . Que bueno.
iVerdad!
Better than Melanie's version
