I don’t know what this is connected with, maybe Red has a clean matrix, without phase points and Dual pixel and some other technologies. But I still choose Canon R5C. Definitely not the case with Canon. • Timecode in • SDI port • Anamorphic support • Highly flexible codec • Hot swappable batteries • No one questions shooting on a Red. The Komodo is regularly used on multimillion dollar productions. • 3 hours plus battery life with stock batteries… not 40 minutes like the R5C. Strangely I own both the Red Komodo and the Canon Eos R3… which is a much better complement due to its newly designed sensor which manages much better dynamic range and ISO performance than the R5/C… plus battery life is excellent. That said, I’ve never thought that the two compete with one another. They are completely different. FYI: The CEO of Red owns a Canon Eos R3.

The R3 overheats at 4K 120fps. Do you know what you're talking about? All cine cameras need external battery solutions. You can run and external battery or power bank all day long on the R5C. I'm sure the CEO of Red owns an iPhone also but didn't Red make it's own phone and failed trying to do it? No Hollywood feature even sniff the R3 for anything. The R5C is in Canon's cine line-up. You might want to use the R5C before you start making comments.
The R5C is pretty amazing hey? Just picked one up, awesome camera and perfect for so many situations. It looks like the R5C had a polorizer on in the first comparison shot, while the Komodo didn't. Or perhaps an ND with polorizer? Significantly different reflections, at least watching on my phone. I do wish it had line level mic input as I’d never use the Tascam add on - it looks like it’d stop you using a top handle. For video only though I do still prefer my Z-cam e2f6 😉

Yeah you can definitely tell the difference in the lighting on the grays and blacks with the Komodo. But the fact that you can do photo and video on the R5C, along with the almost nearly identical quality as the Komodo, makes the R5C a win for me. But like Regan said, it's all about having the right tool for the right job.

Thank you. I immediately came here to see if anyone else noticed also. In addition to the horrible oversaturation, the footage looks low-res or low bitrate. The edges and the surfaces in the foreground look out of focus.
I would be interested to know what you did for stabilization. The ibis on the canon looks a little rough, where the Komodo is silky smooth. I assume you applied stabilization in post for the Komodo.
I experienced this in real life. The R5c has eis. I use the RT and from my experience, turning it off yields better results than leaving it on for certain movements
You can only pull screen grabs if you're shooting at a high shutter speed, but usually with video you're at quite a slow speed so motion blur is often a factor. So I'd say no you can't really pull decent quality stills from video footage
Super into this comparison! One thing I noticed with the R5 colours is how it handle the "red" and it can go towards magenta's pretty quick. Seems like the RED didn't have that issue as much. How have you felt about the battery life on the R5C? I've heard that it's a real buzz kill. Thanks for making the review Luke! Killer job!
oh yeah the reds on the RED is insane and super easy to work with, the canon was weird but im no colorist so it could be user error haha and no I have not felt any pain or worry about the battery life even with profession projects for all day long work. the battery grip really helps and I have not found it to be a issue for me!!

Canon delogging luts introduce way too much contrast and people judge canon cameras as having poor highlight rolloff because of this. R5 C clog 3 footage can be graded much more effectively with curves for smoother highlight rolloff.
IMHO I thought the RED looked better due to the stability. It looked so much smoother and the sky had more punch. I personally liked the R5c colors more.
I heavily use photos plus video so I would recommend the R5C over the c70. If I was to choose the c70 over the Komodo it would be because it works with my canon workflow and colors and easier run and gun camera and easier files to use. However I really love the red sensor so it’s very hard to chose. Most of my friends that have Komodo’s regretted getting it or already sold it
@@LukeAsper I know of at least 5 people that got rid of the Komodo. It's works GREAT for EXACTLY what it was made for (Crash Cam). Other than that, many other Cinema Camera choices. Check out the Kinefinity cameras! This Canon R5C is probably the biggest bang for the buck right now. And don't discount the quality coming from this camera, it's REALLY good!

Own the komodo and the R5 and there are very few situations where I'll pick the R5 over the kimono for video. And it's never for image quality.
The R5C is miles ahead of the R5 for video.
R5C has full frame 8K60P. Personally I think R5C is less quality than Komodo, but more useful ability than Red.
Did I miss what settings, codec, etc were used? Cuz Canon seems way more contrasty than normal.
How do you prevent the reds being crushed by the youtube compression?

What file format did you record the R5c footage in? Raw 8k LT? Raw Super 35 6k HQ? 4k clog 3?
