I would love to take my complex phals outside for the warmer months of the year, but I have no shaded area at all! Mine could also do with a lot more light than they get, but.... making do! Nothing really beats growing any orchid outdoors 👍🏼 have a lovely rest of your week ❤
The weather is just so harsh and unpredictable these days, I much prefer to have the safety and predictability of growing inside. It gets up to 114°F here in the summer in Texas, and we have many more consecutive freezing days outside in the winter. It's scary! Is this the new norm? God, I sure hope not.
Hi I’m in Brisbane too, and I grow phals outside too😁 undercover thou. May I ask where did you get your bark please? I bought twice from Bunnings. The first time was good quality, but the second time was a disaster🤦🏻♀️ I’m not buying from them again. btw, I like your videos❤️
Hey Lizzy, I get online from Orchid Den (based in Burleigh), or Orchidaceous supplies - who do stock online but expensive postage so I used to get the mixes from orchid shows. BOS orchid shows are on this weekend and Redcliffe next weekend so should be able to pick some up!
I am in Hervey Bay and my 17 phals are outside on my western verandah. They have a 70% sunshade for afternoon sun, got two spikes so far, I think too hot as yet. Hopefully the nights cool a bit. Shade house looks great!
Something that might interest your about Phal Papayago. Apparently its a trade name and the registered name is Phal. Chiada Francis 'Picotee' However......it's not as simple as it seems, on further searching someone found a second interesting fact. Below is quoted from their post. "According to OrchidRoots, it should be Phal Chiada Francis (=Phalaenopsis I-Hsin Sunflower × Phalaenopsis Taisuco Firebird ), registered in 2006 by Nat.Chiayi University. However, I (the poster) discovered that a Dutch breeder got a patent on Phal Papagayo in 2012 (how they did that is another issue, plants are difficult to patent in the EU) US20140090127P1 - Phalaenopsis orchid plant named 'PAPAGAYO' - Google Patents and the parents are listed as King Shiang's Rose x King Shiang's Star, mutant B. I(the poster) don't see how they could get the patent seeing as the RHS registration predates the patent application, and so removing the novelty aspect." 'Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice.
Looking forward to seeing all those spikes in bloom. Amazing. I feel your orchids will do well once they go through one growing season. All orchids love being outside. We whom just do not have the weather just make do with them indoors. Enjoy and your little one is quite the cutie. She will become your helper. Have a great day.
Have you considered clear sheeting on the roof to control the winter rains? What about sprinkle some dolomite lime for cal & mag slow release. I’ve cut off a spike to try save a phal but it was so determined that it created a new one right next where I cut it off.
🤔 interesting thought, no I hasn’t considered. I’d only be concerned about the strong easterly winds we get through there and a roof catching them. But I also don’t think I’ll have time to organise it this year with so much going on. Dolomite is a great idea, I might do this on the weekend!
My greatest orchid pest is a mother possum and baby. She walks along my balcony balustrade and if I have a pot sitting there, she tosses the pot off. My cattleya seedlings have become airborne a number of times.😱
Grrrr possums are a big pest.. cute, but complete nuisance! I just found a dendrobium beetle in the shadehouse has eaten about 4 new Cattleya buds on 3 different plants 🤬🤬🤬
Hi there Orchid Dee. Firstly Maisie is gorgeous and what a helper too! Hope you were able to match the tags to the correct orchids. Am growing rescued phals indoors and last night the temperature dropped to 10 degrees. If I place plastic bags over these plants after piercing the bags with some sort of small tool to pierce the bags with holes to allow circulation will this help my orchids to survive the cold? The other alternative is to move these to a westerly position where an oil heater will be running through the night?
Growing outside is definitely a learning curve! It’s so much more fun to have them outside though. Enjoy!

Hi Lizzy, Im in the same area. Try “Orchids R Us” from Mt Tamborine, “Red Fox Orchids” from Caboolture, and “Fame Orchids” from Bayside ☺️

That’s awesome! That’s more space freed up indoor.
Thank you so much for this information! I so appreciate it

You could try some seedling heat mats. I used to use these through winter. I used to get off ebay or amazon.
@@OrchieDee oh thanks heaps. Never heard of these so very much appreciated. ❤️❤️
What about gownrot when phals are rained on ..???
Crown rot not an issue with adequate airflow and warm days for evaporation. Only if allowed water to sit stagnant
