Helpful! I do some of the exact same things. Photos and videos closely how it comes out. Agreed on taper pins! I swear sometimes on old stuff it's really difficult to tell which side is the small side. Can't really measure either as things are mushroomed or something so there is no reliable surface to measure from - or they seem to measure the same. Thanks for being humble and making us feel better haha.
Absolutely
I've taken several of my machines down to nuts and bolts and rebuilt them. By far the most frustrating to work on was my Wotan B75 boring mill. I got the feeling that German machine tool designers hate the people that have to fix them but really like the people who have to use them. It is a pleasure to operate but very difficult to disassemble/reassemble. Trying to remove any part requires the removal of at least five other parts that are nearby. The only saving grace was that I intended on stripping it down completely so all the parts had to come out anyway. It was full of taper pins but to the designers credit every single one had female threads in the large end and they could be pulled out with a slide hammer. One thing that is good about taking a machine apart is you get to know it very thoroughly and will know how to fix it later on if something breaks down. I'm not sure if you mentioned it or not but Lion must be a brand name that is put on other manufacturer's machines. Right now there is a lathe that is identical to your Lion for sale in Manitoba and it's name plate calls it a "Pernik". Ken
Yes indeed. Getting intimate w a machine helps you learn more about it for the future. Yea lion gets their machines from cmm or zmm and they put their label on it. My wife is from morris manitoba. Small world.
Zip lock bags with labels are a god send for me.
Agreed
Old lathes with slot head screws stuck fast with 100 years of neglect have a tendency to make you slip when trying to unscrew them. Be cognisant of where the screwdriver could go when you slip. Wish i knew that a few weeks ago before i dug the driver in to my lathe's ways.
Yeah it happens
Taper pins and snap rings. Hate them both.
Agreed
Wow, your hair grew back fast. But seriously it’s basically a manual trans right.
Yeah pretty much
