I feel like the writers made a big mistake not having Dwight here for this. Instead they put DeAngelo in the scene. A huge missed opportunity to make the scene more powerful.

Duck Hunting in the scene before... Michael, deangelo, and Dwight were in the car on their way to the office after getting kicked out of the restaurant and Dwight called the Dundies stupid and got out of the car
Rainn Wilson couldn’t be there for the scene because something else came up (like some other movie he was filming) so they used Dwight’s anger at Michael as an excuse to not have him there.
I thought the same but it made the finale reunion for Micheal and Dwight have more meaning

What's so touching about this scene is that while the characters are singing goodbye to Michael Scott, the cast are singing goodbye to Steve Carell at the same time
Exactly! Same thing with Pam at the airport. The first time I watched it, I only thought about the characters point of view but every time I rewatch it I know that Jenna really said goodbye to Steve and how they all will be missing him on the show.

Love the fact that pretty much everyone here breaks their characters, because it’s actually the cast saying goodbye to Steve, and not character to character.
So true, the way they look around to each other and are so happy and emotional, or when Ryan grabs his ear which I assume was a signal. It still fits the show, but its beautiful to see how much they all loved steve and have a true bond.

Fun fact: in the script, Andy was supposed to get the award and sit down, and Michael was going to give Ryan his award. They surprised him with this completely unprompted. Those are Steve Carrell's real reactions.

According to Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey on their podcast office ladies, (Pam and Angela on the show). This is not the case, the song, including the lyrics, we’re in the shooting prompt. His reaction is genuine because they rehearsed privately from steve. But, he in fact know this was going to happen.

The thing is, the office doesn’t just feel like a classic show. It feels like a lifestyle. The classic sitcom “laughs” aren’t there, making it truly arbitrary, as Creed would say. It doesn’t just feel like a show, It feels like as if each character is real. Jim’s love for Pam, Dwight’s infatuation with becoming manager, Michael’s desperate attempt to find and be loved. These little quirks that built the characters, they exist within ourselves. It gives us something to look for in life. That no matter how many obstacles come your way, whether it’s another 364 days till pretzel day, a co-worker firing a gun in the office, or being in love with someone who doesn’t see you the same way, you know that it gets better because you are going to get hitched at Niagara Falls, and that’s what makes The Office unique. Being just a show, its part of us. Its who we are. Its inside us. And that’s what she said.

The fact that Toby was willing to sing and participte in this despite everything that Michael has put him through at the office just shows how much Toby's character was undervalued and butchered. He deserved a better ending and more character development. Even if he was the Scranton Strangler, he could have been written better.

The fact he was willing to sing inspite of Michael hating him is completely fitting to his character. Thats literally how he is for the entire show, a peaceful bland person who just goes with everything, not really having a backbone
He isnt underwritten, he is written to perfection. They manage to completely transmit tobys personality with barely any screen time or without him being the center of attention. Why? Because his is written to be boring, and thats the joke, not a mistake. If you start writing episodes around a boring character, you get boring episodes. But when is is sprinkled in over 9 seasons, you end up feeling like you know him. I remind you he is essentially a side character, yet if youve actually seen the show, you know toby and thats an amazing writing achievement which they somehow do with literally every character.

I just watched the Office for the first time, and watched this episode yesterday. I was devastated when he left, he is my favorite character, and now I’m on Season 8. It just isn’t ten same at all. It’s harder to watch without him. Goodbye, Michael. 😢
I actually stopped watching as soon as Michael left. I refuse to watch the episodes without him (because The Office isn’t The Office without Michael). After i watched Goodbye Michael, i just went straight back to the Pilot episode and watch the show all over again until that episode. Because of that, I’ve never watched a single episode (with the exception of the Finale) that took place after Michael left.

He also tried to help Meredith with her drinking too, Michael Scott, although was at times cringey, ignorant at times, he meant well and had a big heart, he’s saved a lot them their jobs, gave multiple chances on people when he shouldn’t of, he really was the best boss.

It actually was in the script. The emotions are genuine because they never did the scene with Steve, they rehearsed without him so that the first time he heard it would be on camera. Still very sweet, but it was scripted and he knew it was coming

I don't know if it was planned for him to start singing here (I mean I can't imagine Will Farell intentionally ruining a moment meant for Steve carell), but they should've just kept him quiet. He really wasn't a part of it, and right at the moment where you start getting tears in your eyes, he comes in and kinda spoils it.

I feel like it was part of the song when he did that as a part of his character since he is supposed to be annoying. I also think that since the piano wasn’t abruptly stopped or lost rhythm, instead transitioned into De Angelo’s part, it was in the song purposely.

Scenes like this one are what make The Office more than just your run-of-the-mill TV comedies. I actually chocked up watching this for the 1st time this year (2019). I recently just got into The Office and started watching on Netflix and I cannot imagine what it must've been like for all of The Office fans who watched this live.
