This video is hard to watch because Layne is so fucking effortlessly incredible. It hurts to watch someone so amazing, knowing how brief they were around and how doomed their existence was.
@@RiceKiller191 I watched them live last year and they put on an amazing show! They sounded so damn good! It was honestly the best show I’ll ever see in my life. If they ever come to your town do not hesitate! Buy those tickets! You won’t regret it! Edit: I wish I could’ve seen Layne live too, but William DuVall is good too and he does great Justice to Layne’s work. Don’t count him out!
In a lot of ways, this is the quintessential aic tune...even if it isn’t one of their better known songs Great vocal harmony, tense guitar riffing, dark as fuck lyrics and a catchy chorus.
I mean it’s one of their better known ones for a reason. Just cause it’s a “hit” doesn’t mean it should be deemed as an uncool favourite track. AICs hits to me deserve every bit of popularity and there isn’t one that I would say isn’t quintessential. I mean just imagine having your back catalogue consist of giants like Them bones, would? Man in the box etc. That being said some of their lesser known songs are just as phenomenal. Astounding musicians.
Arnie art I’d argue it is though, it’s the title track of their most popular album. Plenty of people know it, it’s definitely one of their “greatest hits”. (Also I misread isn’t as is)
This song really makes the album feel like dirt. Plus the video for Down in a Hole was filmed in the dessert. It really feels like they are thirsty for water
My favorite song of theirs, cause it really spoke to me. All that negativity I felt towards failed relationships I'd direct into that song as I listened, and I always felt better after. Thanks, Layne.
Theres so manny great songs but this group ..its a toss up between dirt hate to feel and confused...love there loud stuff but love when thay slow it down...the greatest group of the 90s buy far.i did not really understand when i was young.now at 37..going having taking vicodens for 10 YEARS..MIGHT NOT BE HEROINE...BUT SHIT A OPIET IS A OPIET...I GET SICK EVERY MONTH...AND WHEN I LISTEN THAKES A HOLE NEW MEANING...DAM I LOVE YOU LAYNE...HURTS TO KNOW YOUR NOT AROUND NO MORE..HOPE WHEN I DIE YOU OPEN THE GATES FOR ME...BUT NOT NOW OR ANYTIME SOON.....3 CHEERS FOR THE BEST GROUP OF MY GENERATION..AND SUCH A HUGE LOST...WISH THAY GIVE HIM IS PROPER RESPECT ONE DAY...ITS FUCKING OVER DUE DAM IT...😳
This is my favorite song of them as well, because it speaks deeply to me. In my moments of deep pain and despair because of depression and mental disturbings, this was one of the songs that made me company. It was almost like a therapy. The best thing aboput this song is: no matter what your problem is. If you have it, this music will fit perfectly. Pain unites people.
I absolutely LOVE how Layne sings part of the chorus much lower than on the album. It makes the song so much more haunting, which I didn’t even think was possible
It doesnt get any better than this. In fact, I believe Staley is the best rock vocalist of all time. Some guys like Keenan, Bon Scott, Cornell, Dickinson come very close but hes the standard bearer.
I’d say that too. None of those grabbed my soul the way Layne’s did. Some say Cornell was technically better but his voice was irritating to me. After hearing Layne no one else seems that good anymore.
Shit I wasn't born till 6 Years after this I'd sell my soul to see them live. Favorite band of all time! Layne sung everything he felt I can relate to almost every song
i find alot of his technique in odd places. like, i think you can hear a bit of him in iggy pop. as in, maybe he heard raw power and him trying to do an iggy pop impression lead him closer to his tone. theres a couple songs on that album that sound like they coulda been alice in chains songs had alice been a 70s band instead. specifically gimme danger. and i need somebody.
I think anyone who’s not even a fan of Alice could listen to this song when feeling in anyway low and feel so much better, one of my friends was going through a nasty breakup where he was accused of rape and violence, shit was wearing him down and he was on the edge, I played him this album and turned him to a fan. Powerful
Such a classic song.Chains with Layne and Mike was unbelievably good.I never get tired of hearing their masterpieces they created.Awesome video! Thanks for posting!
Love, Hate, Love / I can't Remember / Man in the box and many other was wrote by Layne too, of course Jerry's the lead letrist of AIC, but Layne was the Soul, The Feelings of AIice
Layne was the heart Jerry was the soul. Jerry wrote like 90% of Alice's lyrics and most of the music . Layne wrote some great lyrics tho for the handful of songs he wrote but Jerry is the soul and driving force
hellomynameisdoom Layne wrote more than 10%. He wrote anywhere from 25%-45% of their lyrics. I know people wanna give jerry credit because he does so much for the band but sometimes ppl give a little too much credit and make it seem like Layne did nothing but sing. Plus Layne wrote all of the mad season album and AIC’s last 2 songs. But I do agree that jerry is the soul and sound of AIC and he always will be.
@@hellomynameisdoom8208 disagree brother, you can actually feel much more SOULNESS coming from Layne than Jerry. Jerry is more tecnical/smart piece of the band. Layne was full emotion, all about feelings and expressing those feeling through his singing. Afterall, he is the one who suffered and died from those feelings.
@@Kamelstreet I can feel the soulness and feelings coming out of Jerry when Jerry sang and played, why cant jerry have soul and depth and feelin? Jerry was the driving force behind this band , layne was the cherry on top. They both needed each other they fed off eachother . Layne was absolutely a voice that cant be replicated and had depth but they both had soul and Jerry definitely struggled with drugs and alcohol , he a recovering alcoholic/addict . It's not a competition between the two . Very subjective though.
I just listened to my live AIC CD The First Official Live Electric Album for first time since I got it early 2000's.. From Bleed The Freak to the last, Damn That River, they're all GREAT. Best live CD, even better. Couldn't tell you which songs I dig the best and I'm almost 60. Dadadaa, DADADAA....✌
Godamnit this song sends shivers up my spine. Everytime I listen to it I have to crank it as loud as my speakers can go. Such a great song that really expresses what Layne was feeling at this time.
thank you! stop complaining guys, the bad quality almost enhances the feeling anyway, i don't think it would be the same if this was written in the past ten years anyway.
I agree; I remember being 6 and 7 years old and i would flip the cassette over from the first side and you would hear "junk...fuck..." and sean's cymbals...goosebumps. I love the separation that records/cassettes gave an album- it created a better format for the listener as opposed to 80 straight minutes of filler material. The concept of Dirt just isn't the same on c.d., but it sounds better. But oh well, I guess nothing lasts forever.
Yeah for real. It kind of does enhance the feeling in a way. It reminds me of being outside of a place smoking a cigarette while a band is playing inside. Despite the fact that it wasn't professionally recorded you can tell that it was an immaculate performance. You cant beat Dirt era AIC.
Staley did not write 95% of lyrics Jerry wrote most of the material. Still I agree with you that staley is a vital part of aic and with out him a large part of alice has lost what made them so damn good.....
These guys were NOT birthed by Layne...Jerry not only wrote most of the material, but if you've seen their home video, you will see Jerry actually COACHING Layne on how to sing it! The current success of their new stuff is PROOF that Layne needed Jerry as much as Jerry needed Layne.
