The demos for dirt just have that little bit more personality to them than the studio versions. Especially for them bones and rooster. It's also really interesting as a guitarist and huge fan of Jerry to see how the solos have changed as he's worked on the individual phrases over time.
it def happens I think you lose a little magic everytime you record a song when i demo something first it has some quality to it i can never quite capture again
Layne on his Facelift voice. Just love it! It's terrible how bad the drugs are. Shortly after this recording his voice began to change and his throat to suffer. For a while he was clean of drugs, and his energy on stage and the strength in his voice were noticeable, but his relapse was so bad, even worse than before, and after the death of his love he could never recover himself again. What a sad story and tragic end for one of the strongest and most precious voices that rock has seen in its whole history. Fortunately, his charm left a wonderful legacy, from which many artists emerged who were highly influenced by Layne, and also by the perfect vocal duet with Jerry and his unmistakable and unmatched harmony. Thank you for the memories
Drugs work in the beginning. Always thought layne improved as a singer during dirt and for two years after up to 95 at above by mad season his peak. After that he stopped growing cause the drugs turned on him.
Laynes voice got better after this and kept improving until about 1995/1996. What you are hearing is Layne embracing more nuance and subtlety and less throaty screamy. Listen to their live shows around 93, 94, and 95”. Layne could scream with even more power than ever. On record like jar of flies and mad season, he wanted to be more melodic. By the dog record his voice was noticeably in decline. He compensated with all those harmonies but he lost the power which takes a lot of practice and exercise to maintain.
I like this more than the studio version, this is Layne at his peak as well but I feel like they tried too hard on the studio version of dirt and ended up doing too much. This feels more balanced and laid back in a way.
I feel like the album got over produced for everything to "synchronize" like Layne and Jerry's voices..and all of the demo's sound a lot more natural and raw.
This version sounds more "open" and raw to me, which I LOVE, the overall tone matches the lyrics better, angrier and more insistent...Layne at his BEST. Gosh, I'm continually reminded over and over of what a great loss to the world it is to not have Layne with us any more. I admit, it makes me sad...and angry.

DEFINITELY 💯 a masterpiece!!! Should make people think 🤔 !!! This song is dark enough to me that it should do the adverse of what it implies!!! Pain... Is real... Learn from it at all costs... For the embetterment of yourself.... 💯🫂!!! Try to get over any addictions you may have... Other people can help; however any individual with a problem... INCLUDING ME should realize that no matter how many people may try to help you... It's up to YOU as an individual to overcome your addictions!!! DENIAL is always the first step... VERY heart breaking 💔 and sad... VERY obvious in the lyrics... " One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be... I try to hide myself from what is wrong for me... FOR ME!!!! Number 1... Caring about your problem may be and often times should be something that others may have to point out to you b/c ... DEPRESSION is VERY powerful... Ok... So someone says something in a GOOD way and tries to console you... And council you and you say... No I don't have a problem and... GO AWAY!!!... If you have even one once of hope within yourself you will know ... The other person saw something wrong... And you should probably discuss the matter!!! If they try again group therapy/ intervention may be necessary and/ or essential. Goal... Get the person to care...!!! Obviously... Saying," One who doesn't care is one who should not be." Sadly 😭 implies obvious references to VERY bad things 😢!!! Then to say... I try to HIDE....( Rather than fix) myself from what is wrong for me... Then the last two words... Repeating..... FOR ME... After pretty much saying... Ok... I'm not concerned about changing... Solidifies a DEFINITE 💔 That's in need of healing... BIG TIME!!!🫂💯 YES... I would think he was down in a hole boxed in with sad feelings and wanted to be left alone and not followed!!! This song has that creepy vibe of a serpent eating dirt... Which; God condemns the Devil to after the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden!!! DEFINITELY 💯 a masterpiece!!!❤🫂💯
From a business stand point, i can see why the album dirt sounds like it does and it is a good choice. But as a fan of them i appreciate the sound and feel of these demos more than the album's. This is more raw and sounds like a live session
Given that Eddie Van Halen had gifted him a pair of Peavey 5150 stacks right after their tour together had finished, I’d bet it was one of those. I’m also hearing a fair bit of chorus; whether or not that was done with a pedal or was added in the mix we may never know but stick a Boss CE2 in the effects loop and it’ll get you close
Jerry pretty much exclusively used his G&L rampage, a Gibson LP studio, or his tele from the Love Hate Love live at the Moore video, with a dirty amp stack, most likely Marshalls or Randals (maybe with a bogner blended in) and a Dunlop Wah pedal. That’s about it, at least during the AiC Layne era.

Yup drugs suck! We can't forget the toll the Marlboros took on his voice as well 🙏

[Verse 1]
I have never felt such frustration
Or lack of self-control
I want you to kill me and dig me under
I wanna live no more

One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be
I've tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me

In my mouth, on my tongue
I want you to scrape me from the walls
And go crazy like you've made me

One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be
I've tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me

it really does...
Snow Bunny Prince a lot of the demos are better than the album and even unplugged versions in my opinion
It’s more sinister
Time for another aic box set..a ultimate box set that includes all these dirt demo versions! As well as any other demos out there!
Damn that "and dig me under "and "on my toung " Harmony should have been prominent on the album
This is a stoned slower version I love it ❤
I have never felt such frustration or lack of self-control.
Jerry went fucking NUTS on this solo he really came out of his SHELL🫣
Dio mio.. che bomba.... grazie...
wow.
Why does no one ever talk about how badass Jerry Cantrell is.... Also This almost sounds like someone fucked around with the original in Pro Tools...
Yeah feeling a bit suss about all these demos appearing but not being released by the band.
Yeah, no, this a completely different version with different guitar and vocals and even drums
vocals and drums are completely different. it's a demo, compare it to the officially released demos.
