You smacking around your plant creating "strong wind" gave me so much joy that I can't even explain it 🤣🤣🤣 thank you for that, kind sir 🤣🤣🤣 also, thank you so very much for sharing all of your videos, I have learned such an incredible amount from you and it's brightened up my passion for my plants and my home! Best to you!
I am so glad that you chose to make this video as I totally believe that you have been able to calm people down with starting their own moss pole hobby!! Thanks Jan! You’re the greatest person!!
I only got onto the moss pole growing after watching your really well informed information. I bet even Brad can do it! 😅 Love how he jumps off the table ‘after’ you finished your demonstration! Great video Yan! 💚🌿🍃👌🏻 Natalie
Excellent Video. Of all the You Tube videos I have watched you seem to have the nicest moss poles that stand straight and secure. Thank you for sharing. Now I know there is an easy way for them to be secure. The big heavy pots really are nice. I bet you could DIY some cement heavy cover pots at a low price too. Even paint them as desired. 😄
I enjoy all your videos because you're so full of fantastic info! And Brad! I love him and I'm not a huge cat person but he is the best! Brings a smile to my face every time he makes an appearance ❤
I really appreciate this video. Tilting the pole back just a bit was a great tip for me. Thank you for sharing your plant journey and knowledge obtained with us.
Good advice, thanks Jan. I've had a couple of topplee disasters when watering the taller extended ones. The weight of the full bottle overbalances them when you turn your back. I now bungee cord them to furniture first.
That was my question too. How do you water the extended moss poles without them toppling over! After my disastrous first attempt, I now move them over to the wall and bungee them to the curtain rods 😆
This is a very informative video that answered a lot of my questions about keeping tall , top heavy , large plants on a moss pole, in a small pot , from falling over and damaging the plant.
I put a pin 📌 in the wall behind them and a loop of garden wire that hooks over the top of the garden stake.. I find they are most likely to topple when the water cup is full in the top ✌️
Great video, my biggest problem has been that I forget to water the mix in the pot and just water the pole, so the pot media is so light the pole just slides through it. Now off to look up those amazing trolleys!
Great topic and video. The number of times we've had some of our poles topple over 😡 all a learning curve as they grow, and we understand what works best for them.
I’m going to implement some of these because I do have some plants that are constantly tipping over. So smaller plants and tilting the pole a bit should help a lot. Thanks for this video! So helpful
Nice overview, thanks. So far we've been able to follow your moss pole techniques from construction to potting up easily. The number one struggle, which in my opinion is most important for stability is the cover pot. We don't have Bunnings here and have yet to find affordable ( I refuse to pay more for the pot than the plant itself 😹) heavy pots that fit so nicely. Have had to resort to setting pieces of Styrofoam in bottom to lift and wedge along sides to make it snug. Making do til the right size/ affordable pot comes along.😻
if you live in the United States, Michael's (the craft store) always has sales on cover pots! I get all of my 5-6in cover pots from there! I'm signed up for the mailing list and get lots of coupons, and when they do seasonal clearance sales, they tend to put their pots on sale too. i never spend more than $10 on 5-6in pots this way.
@hyppomaniaa Hmm, it seemed like they might have some decent options online, but I didn't have much luck in store. I think I waited too long, and Halloween and Christmas decor took over the store. I plan to look around again in spring once all the holiday events are over.
I don't know where you live, obviously, but check out Big Lots. I found huge real ceramic/clay pots there for $70, and they were absolutely massive. I found those same exact pots somewhere else for $300 a piece. Big Lots had all kinds of awesome pots for such a good price.
Brad totally stole the show again and then promptly got off the table at the end. He is just so amusing, love that cat 🤣 Oh and thank you for the video as always lol 🌱💚
There’s still substrate in my sock from having a pole fall over. Thank you so much for the tips! My glad hands with the broken leaves says thank you as well.
When i went to buy a gloriosum a while back the seller had multiple poles hanging on his wall through hooks he had screwed into it. Kind of like yours in the garden. I thought it was a pretty good way to save some space aswell, at least as long as the plants arent incredibly large yet.
I wish I could find decorative planters that don’t allow the pot all the way to the bottom with no holes so I don’t need to worry about runoff going everywhere. Love Brad! ❤
Ich hab mir einen Moosstab in 3D drucken lassen😺 Ist sehr stabil und kann mit mehreren Elementen aufgesteckt werden. Mein Mc Dowell bekommt so die nötige Stabilität 🤩
You are going to have your own preferences for what plants you like, and your available space is going to be unique to you. So picking out which plants is largely based on your tastes. I guess one thing to consider is why use a moss pole in the first place? It's a lot more work than other plant supports, so what are you gaining? Basically it comes down to the medium going along the length of the pole, which allows many more roots to develop, resulting much greater development in the plants as they climb. So it's probably not worth putting a plant on a moss pole if the plant can't climb or can't grow larger in size as it matures. Otherwise, using other supports or no support at all probably makes more sense. What you're looking for is an epiphytic plant which is one that "grows on the surface of another plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water or from debris accumulating around it". The roots and vining could be an indicator that it's epiphytic. I'd say there are 2 ways to pick out the plants. Either research a specific plant you're interested in, or see what others have already done successfully. Maybe google " moss pole" and see what pops up. You could research to see if it's epiphytic. These are some popular genera that many people have tried with decent success: Epipremnum, Monstera, and Philodendron. Not all species in these genera will have the same growth behaviors, so it's worth researching the specific species you're interested in. If you're not sure what's out there, look for people that have large moss pole collections like Jan. Search his channel for "tour" videos, and you'll see many examples of what you can try.
There is no comprehensive list :) just have a look through my houseplants tours for some inspiration if you're not sure what plants you'd like to grow :)
Been watching your videos (old and new) for a while now. You've convinced me to give moss poles a try. Which plant would you recommend for a first time pole grower? I live in Southern Minnesota USA and our cold weather is about to start so we will have out heating on for the next several months.
Happy growing ! Might be best to ask somebody who has more experience growing plants in a similar environment to yours but usually pothos are always a good plant to start with :)
This video is just what I needed, thank you! One question please, how do you choose the right width when it comes to D moss poles for your plants? I'm thinking they shouldn't be too wide, so that it's snug for for the roots that like to be root bounded?
Suppose it depends on the plant, how mature it is, how many cutting u’ll put on each pole, how much humidity h have etc. the narrower the more volume … the more volume the slower it will dry out & more room for roots but also less space for plants to grow on
Thank you for this video! It was right on time!!! I just placed my first plant ( monstera ) on a moss pole and the next day it was leaning sideways…. With these tips I’m ready for success!!! 😊🪴
Wouldn't you add some sort of potting mix to the "wiggle room" I mean, I know you want the roots to mainly be in the pole, but it helps (at least w my moss poles) to have some mix packed in around the base of the plant - like you'd do w any standard potted plant?
Didn't you know that this is Brad's show, you're just there for the talking points. 🤣 BTW, I love your Syngonium Steyermarkii! I'm getting ready to put mine on a moss pole today. I'm so excited! 🎉 🪴 🎉
@sydneyplantguy they're gorgeous plants! I've had so many people ask me if I want to sell her and my answer is "NO"! I'm not even taking cuttings from her.
I built the plant trollies for 8 of my moss poles. I just used old wide dresser drawers and added a piece of plywood all the way across the bottom and then screwed 4 two inch wheels to the bottom. My moss polls are not that tall but could be. Here as I have the plants now I do not want to block the windows. I love the trollies . Makes it so much easier to take plants to the bath for washing down.
How do we know if my plant needs a moss pole? If my plant’s a climber I reckon i’ll need it, but what about ordinary plants ? That aren’t climbers, would I still use a moss pole ? 😊
@@sydneyplantguy Thank you for your answer. Have problems with thrips. The larvae go into the substrate to pupate. I think the mosspole would be a suitable place for it. First I have to get rid of the thrips then I make mosspoles.
It's more a craft then a science... My first mosspoles are collapsing al the time.. Just to little moss in the pole (it's a kind of light weight moss pole). I didn't filled it evenly ;-(
Also, why is it that most people dont have the missing the pole below the "soil" line? Wouldn't that help to invite roots to form in the base of the pole?
@@sydneyplantguy could the moss work the same way as soil? Like if you just fill the pole all the way down? I mean, the roots wind up growing in it eventually, so is there a better reason to use soil or whatever mix below the soil/mix line? Like better stability? If you were using something super heavy like pon, I can def see that! Me, I can't afford that much pon, and I just mostly repotted everything into a mix of large coco husk, coir, and a heavy amount of course perlite, so it's a pretty airy mix...not very heavy! I'm a very "why" and "how" mind of person, so you'll have to excuse me wanting to dig deeper into the whole thing! Could you do a video on WHICH plants to put on moss poles? My mind goes to ariel roots and vining - but how to decide which plants?
Vining plants? What else?
You are going to have your own preferences for what plants you like, and your available space is going to be unique to you. So picking out which plants is largely based on your tastes.
I guess one thing to consider is why use a moss pole in the first place? It's a lot more work than other plant supports, so what are you gaining?
