FULL INTERVIEW: 2 firefighters recount terrifying response in Lahaina

They were among the first responders desperately trying to fight the flames in Lahaina town that day. The two say the intensity of the heat was like nothing they've ever experienced.

My question is , who gave the police the order to block the road and not allow people to leave? This seems like an extremely important matter and it’s not being talked about.

I saw one video of the left lanes open for emergency vehicles only while the right lane was completely blocked with a line of cars. Were they trying to keep one lane for emergency vehicles only? Stilly fishy
It’s only being talked about by people who care about other innocent people who made the deadly mistake of trusting the police. At this point, I trust the police as much as I can be privy to their plans and orders. I want body cam footage of orders being given. I want a paper trail of accountability. If they wanna be in charge then they need to be prepared to face the consequences of being in charge.

Who would say such a thing? Is one Persons suffering greater than another’s?
It is so important that the public hears these stories and experiences, as difficult as they must be to recall. Thank you to these heroic public servants, not only for putting their lives on the line, but also for being transparent and vulnerable in the telling of their experience in order to help the general public actualize what happened. We need as many public accounts as possible so that we can put together the pieces of why so many lives were lost and how to prevent it from happening again.
The haters are out in force, safely typing away far from danger. It will take a long long time to sort out the real timeline and truthful details about the entire picture, especially given the broken coms at the time. It was not like in the fictional disaster movies where there’s a CentCom that’s instantly getting ALL the info from EVERYWHERE, and where EVERYONE gets relevant info about their specific location. That’s still FICTION. Plus, applying the concept of mainland resources, where help can come in quickly from surrounding areas, is also fiction for our Hawaiian Islands. You can’t just drive fire trucks over the water. And there are no fresh water reservoirs to supply air support. Clearly there are lessons to be learned - let’s determine what those lessons are before spreading fictional conspiracies. Maui’s people don’t need that.

Then these "journalists" have to stop making "feel sad" stories, and ask REAL questions. This fluff interview did NOTHING to shed light on what happened. I don't want to see grown men cry, I want to see PISSED OFF MEN DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY. But they won't do it, like ALL government employees, their PENSIONS are more important than standing up to corruption.

This is a very touching interview from firefighters who experienced this terrible situation. They did their very best. I appreciate your sincerity and bravery.

I feel for these men and what they will endure mentally and emotionally for a long time to come. There are no words to express what they must be feeling, and they did their best, Think of the pain they must be in because they weren't able to get to where they needed to go because of blocked roads that were ordered that way. God comfort these men.
Watching this broke my heart had me in tears seeing this fireman break down. There was nothing more they could do besides trying to save there own life. Such a tragic loss 🥲

Based on the haunted looks they have in their eyes, we have been shielded from the worst images they have burned into their minds. So much appreciation for these brave souls. No question they did the best they could in an impossible situation.

Kawika and Jay's accounts are terrifying and beyond sad to say the least. So grateful for them. And all first responders. Heroes! My daughter is a firefighter/advanced emt. And I know a retired captain on Kauai (we volunteered together for K.O.R.E.) It's in your blood to continue helping people which I admire. Thank you for this heartfelt interview.

This was a very moving and sensitively done interview. Chelsea, you did a great job being with these men whose feelings of failure were so painfully evident, but who selflessly chose to avoid voicing those feelings, to avoid soliciting sympathy. The people of Maui need gratuitous legal assistance on the part of a trustable and reputable team of criminal lawyers to pursue this as far as possible. The Fire fighter that went out into that maelstrom to find the right vehicle, with keys, was a true hero. I believe he had divine intervention that guided him to the car, back to the men and back out again. I hope we hear his story
No the real hero was the fire fight helping the people running for their live while the other fighters hid in and behind the truck that they dragged thru the st unconscious

There have been many cases of firefighters starting fires and even being serial arsonist. Some fire companies in our country have even refused to put out house fires unless the people pay them. Firefighters overall are awesome people for what they do, just remember, we are all human regardless of job. Look up how many doctors were serial killers, that one gets covered up a little more. Though more people die from medical malpractice than just about anything else in our country. Moral of the story, becarful of who you put all your trust in.

He says gridlocked but that is not true. The police were stopping people at both ends of front street which left people no where to go.
@chrismadison305 no the police were given orders to block all the exits so thats what they did... it had nothing to do with power lines... the police following "orders" BBQ"d hundreds of children and thousands lost their lives. they turned off the water too.

@chrismadison305 power was off. What do you think is a better option, driving around downed poles or being forced to sit in the path of the fire? An interview with Fish said the road was clear. The ones who survived were the ones who disobeyed and went around the blockade.
I'am a retired fire Captain from a large CA fire dept. I was involved in the Oakland Hills Fire (1991), the Malibu Fire (1983) and numerous other wildland fires throughout my career. CA has a process where fire companies, from around the state, can be called on to respond anywhere in the state for mutual aid assistance. It's one of the best systems in the country (about the only thing CA does right). These firefighter were caught in a situation of very dry fuels, heavy wind conditions, old wood building construction and limited resources (fire companies and water). This was a perfect scenario for a conflagration and death. These Firefighters did a heroic job, given what they were up against, but it was a no win situation. The fire was going to burn until it ran out of fuel (houses, vehicles, trees and brush). My heart goes out for those who have lost love ones and for the firefighters who tried their best, but were stymied from the start.
What is your opinion on the water being cut off and no sirens to notify the public to have a chance to evacuate? I live in California and have been evacuated for weeks at a time.. I can’t wrap my mind around how many things could have happened but didn’t…

The did what they wanted to save save them selves they made a way . Ther are firefighters who lost their lives in fire, is much smaller and save the family, a child, and a fucking dog. They are heroes somebody who save them selves and did not protect and serve the people that pay them to protect and serve and save them selves do not deserve to be called heroes.

As a glass artist I know that windshield had to be hotter than a normal fire without something to stoke it up to 2000 degrees F for it to start to bubble!!!
THAT fact should be in people's minds when they are pondering all of the oddities and imposssibilities that existed during one event.
Could have been tint or a film of some kind not only the glass.. please don't reach a conclusion without all the information needed.

Firemen are great people. They run into danger while everyone is running out. I still grieve the 911 firemen. Now the Maui firemen. Not just any death but their PTSD.
I’m in health care, and I was always devastated when I couldn’t save a life. No matter what I tried during COVID pandemic. I still have images. I still feel the blame from family members not understanding that we really tried. These men I’m sure were scared but still pushed through. My heart breaks for them since they feel terrible that they could not do more. They will be dealing with survivor’s guilt for years, especially since their job is to help others. It’s weird. We need to save our own lives, yet the guilt of not being able to help others lingers for years. Depression happens and with the survivor’s guilt, it can be dangerous to the first responder. I hope that the first responders get good behavioral health support. That’s the least they deserve. ❤

After the tornadoes our town was without power for weeks in some places. We did have some people bring in generators for people working to clean up.

I don’t get the negative comments against these guys. They were on the front lines. Not your average fire situation to be sure and I’m sure they did the best under the circumstances. These are men…mortal men…not Superman with super powers. Before you criticize just try to imagine being in there…it’s impossible to do. Just think that your duty is to do or die. They pushed the limits and almost paid the ultimate price. Sure, there a tons of questions and plenty of blame to go around. But any anger should not be aimed at these men.I am a retired city firefighter from RI living in Ma. There are times in every firefighters career when they’re in a situation that they consider the fact it’s the end. We called it ‘going to the shrine,. To survive such a situation is life changing. I know. I’ve been there. Hats off to my Hawaiian brothers. My heart goes out to everyone who has to endure this tragedy
A lot of us are pissed off at you firefighters, myself included, because 350 of your brother firefighters died on 911 when the towers were brought down in explosive controlled demolitions and only one whistleblower, Rudy Dent, spoke up to bring Truth to what happened. Many of us have been struggling in the 911 Truth Movement for years with very little help from you expert firefighters who could bring truth to what happened in a matter of hours if you'd only stand up. Instead, these criminals are emboldened and pulling off operations like the Lahaina travesty. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves!

Good men. No matter how impossible the circumstance, these guys showed up to do their job, put their rear ends on the line. The concern for others expressed by these two firefighters also is an asset to their character. You guys did what you could and I would guess more. @andied2510 These firefighters drove into hell, and nearly died trying to get out. Their windshield bubbled, the steering wheel steamed. The fire hose burned. The extreme heat took most of their strength. Their gear & tank is very heavy, hoses are heavy, then add extreme heat and the exhaustion. If they hadn't had their fire resistant gear on and air tanks on they would have died instantly. One firefighter was ready to walk into the open flames cuz maybe they thought that was a way to end the suffering. But others had enough strength mentally & physically to save them from desperation. The mind can cause people to do irrational things out of shear terror. Like the people who jumped out of the towers on 9/11. This was Lahaina, Maui Hawai'is 9/11. These firefighters did the same as those on 9/11, they went into the fire. And some of those made it back. These surviving firefighters have injuries you can't see, but they have them and they run deep and will be with them for a lifetime. Respect, love, and concern is what I have for them and the man that came to rescue them.

If these firefighters and others were the one public servants who acted honorably, I stand corrected. It is a little hard to understand how a small brush fire in the afternoon that was deemed "contained", became the inferno that destroyed Lahaina and likely 1000 lives a few hours later. The fire captain didn't even speak at the press conferences immediately after. Never heard how many crews had been deployed. He was off island apparently. After dismal conduct of governor, the mayor, the police....guess I'm now a skeptic.

There were a lot of power lines and trees down because of the winds. The power wasn't off everywhere, so the power should have been shut down. The communication just wasn't there. I don't think most understand the gravity of the situation until it was too late. Just awful.
I heard from eye witness a cop was blocking the road as the witness said he ended up having to walk out and that's what he saw. He also said some exits were blocked by cops

I don't believe these people are incredibly stupid ....the same guy who was police chief over las Vegas mass shootings was chief of police transferred to Maui..please verify that last info he was an authority if it wasn't exactly a police chief.

These men seem like theyre holding back on so much more to what they witnessed, the events that transpired that day has literally left them speechless.
Hard to imagine facing a fire like this, concerned for friends family and community, as well as your brothers facing it with you. You did your best, your very best, this fire couldn’t be stopped.
These guys did nothing wrong. They went to help but there was nothing they could have done. The winds that day were crazy. That fire was a living thing by the time they got there, not to be stopped that day. But Maui officials failed. And failed miserably.

My heart hurts for all animals too. One couple threw their cat out in it! They didn’t take it they threw it outside. I can’t comprehend that. Crazy!
Maui Humane Society and SaveMauiCats have been desperate to get in and save any survivors, but they weren't letting them into the effected area. Google those organizations if you want to help support their efforts.
They threw the cat into the fire? Omg that’s heartbreaking 💔 who would do that to a poor animal I have cats I would never. My cat is like my kid
Probably threw it out of the house so it could run to try and save itself as they probably couldn't save it and themselves is my guess. It's like if you have livestock you open all the gates and chase them out of their corals and pens so they can try and run and save themselves. Not everyone has the means to take all their pets. I have two cats and a large dog. Bet your ass they would all be right beside me through it all. But I wouldn't fault that person to hard it was probably the best option at that time sadly. 😢
Pets are family members. Save my child - save my cats. No difference. I can’t comprehend people who evacuate but leave their pets behind.

It sounds to me that they were called way too late to be able to stop the fires! I heard that many people weren’t able to use their phones so were unable to get in touch with anyone and up to this day still have no internet! Wow this is so sad. So glad these firefighters made it out of there alive. You can see & hear how hard this is for them to talk about. That sounded terrifying, sheltering in place. That would have been hard to do. Your fight or flight response would have kicked into high gear. I don't know how they did it but thankfully they did! Thank you to all firefighters for everything you do! Thank you to everyone for sharing their stories. Hawaii is so beautiful and to have something this ugly touch it is just unimaginable and heartbreaking😢😢
There job was not to shelter in place… there job was to save lives and property. Why weren’t they knocking on windows of the cars that were ”gridlocked” and getting people to follow them out of the fire?
To outrun a fire that was moving 60mph? Sure.
@@imaamericangirl1406 it sounds like they were surrounded by fire and had no choice but to shelter in place. If you listen to them telling their story one of them did go out away from the fire truck and fell to his knees and got burned because it was so hot. My take away is if they had gone out away from the fire truck they would have died. They can't help others if they can't help themselves first. I wasn't there so maybe I am wrong but that's how I understand it.

The water was shut off. The power was shut off no communication for the people to know what was going on. People burned in their beds. People burned in their cars, people drowning in the ocean. Everyone being told to go back into the fire. You tell me that that makes any sense….

WHY the hell were ALL those roads Blocked?!?!? This is a HUGE factor in so many People Dying🔥My heart 💔goes out to these brave men.

Many beautiful/tourist places are against big highways in their towns bc they are "Ugly,noisy etc" There were only 2 roads and one was not very good. They had built a good road out of Paradise, Ca. And the town blocked some lanes to "slow down" traffic through their idyllic, pretty town...and like Lahaina stalled, backed up traffic caused many deaths...This was called,"The Camp Fire" after the road too little for fire trucks to use. Helicopters could not fly from high winds. So they were unable to put out the fire when it was still small enough. Poor access.

it's time for we the people start calling our congress men and women and senators and tell them to put a stop NOW to all the money going to Ukraine and start making sure that Hawaii get all the aide they need to rebuild tell our government that it's time for them to stand up to this government to say no more it's damn high time we take care of our own country and our own people

For the life of me, I can't image how the people of Lahaina experienced those terrible 2 days of hell. I still remember when my neighbor's house burned down. That happened 40 years ago and I'm still traumatized about it. I thought our house will burn down too but luckily it didn't. I was very young then and still remember looking at the fire and had that unforgettable fear. So for those kids who experienced the Lahaina fire, I can relate. They will hold on to that traumatic part in their life like I did.

Sadly most the kids are no longer alive. Kids were home from school and parents at work, many didn't know what to do or even knew what was happening. They are just now begining to mention the large number of children that are most likely passed.
The system where u mark urself "Safe" would make a big difference in this case? It is Facebook where u do this I think. Even w/cell phones down there are temporary service centers at shelters to make contacts. Just as children are taught to know their address &phone # in case they get lost. Kids learn how to use computers/cellphones in school and this should be part of the curriculum. I have been relieved when tornadoes have hit near my relatives by this system. It works.
Why was the upper egress "blocked" and by what/whom? How did a police suv magically "roll up" to the trapped fire crews and how was it able to "speed down lahainaluna rd" so efficiently when moments before multiple fire engines gave up trying and began to shelter in place? Why no water? Why was the power left on during hurricane force winds to start the fires in the first place?

am a lahaina resident, like so many others my family and I lost our home and everything we have ever owned. The answers being given are not sufficient to account for the total loss of our town and most importantly over 1000 people including MANY children who are gone. May those responsible for this atrocity through gross negligence or malicious intent be held to account.
As an x firefighter. Non of this is even close to normal. Turnouts don’t burn. Grass fires don’t melt city’s.

Cars melted into the pavement within feet of intact wooden fences and unscorched trees does not seem possible to me without some other sort of incendiary being involved. Thank you for your time.
These men were up against impossible odds. They did what they could with what they had. Fire is an all consuming destructive entity. Thank you for what you accomplished.
They saw the road was blocked...why didn't they try to find out why - break up the block - save all the people, instead of themselves. Very happy they saved themselves, but they were firefighters - they neededd to get those people out of that roadblock....
@@AvalonFarm-vl7bf I can't help thinking there were downed power lines all over the island blocking the roads. The heat from the fires was so intense there was no place to run. Wait for the investigations.
God bless these wonderful brave heroes. It’s just such a horrible situation and experience for them. It has to be difficult to relive their experiences day by day, likely experiencing nightmares. The PTSD they must be dealing with must be very difficult to keep reliving. Praying for these brave men. They are heroes. We appreciate them so much. Such brave men. They did everything they could.

These firemen are some of the best! They have given their best, and survived to keep serving their community and I have only respect, love and prayers for God to bless them all and heal their trauma, help them rebuild Lahaina for the people. We love them and want to support them ❤️🙏🏼🌿

There are many bizarre things that made this such a disaster. "Hawaii real estate" on YT is trying to help people if you want to try to help. Lots of info and trying to connect needs with solutions. God bless these men and all the blessed people of Maui.

I don't see failure in any way of those firefighters.
Some emergencies are beyond the scope of humankind to stop.
The firefighters on Maui gave it everything they had, and maybe even just a little bit more... but it was an unwinnable situation. No fault attaches to Maui Fire and Rescue. Nobody on Earth could've done more in that situation or fought any harder.
A lot of us strive to live by the ethos of the fire service... Service above self... Boundless compassion... Courage... Integrity... Dedication... Willingness to risk it all for anyone in peril that can be reached...

I know what these men are going through. Being a survivor of the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, you can’t help but feel guilty being alive when so many innocent people died. It haunts you for months, years.. God bless you men for your courage! God bless the people and land of Maui! 😢💔🙏

the roses at the end finally made me cry i was trying to hold it back i remember my grandmother telling me roses mean remember. the poor people lost their lives from sheer negligence of the goverment officials in charge there.
It's clear to most now that it's way beyond Negligence.
