Battery change on a 2004 Ford E350 6.0L

- Here's a little video on how to change the dual batteries on the Ford E350. Since the engine takes up all of the engine compartment, they decided to put the batteries in boxes on the frame. Good idea, hard to change. Hopefully this video will give you confidence to do it yourself!
Wow great video! Thank you, I'm about to change my auxiliary 2nd battery on a Ford diesel 1996 Superduty truck E450. Strange design... it's so odd that engineers decided to put 2nd battery in such a difficult location to access and even harder to remove.
I was looking under my E350 wondering if you really had to go through all that just to access the aux battery, and it turns out you do! Ford engineers were on crack that day evidently.
Exactly what i said, wtf were they smoking then
They just have too much shtuff under the hood... It's not a bad place but they ought to have made an easier way to raise and lower the batteries..
Worst battery setup ever
THank you for this. I just purchased an 07 E350, which came with 2 new battery boxes (for good reason) and this helped SO much in giving me the basics on what to look for as I replace the boxes.
It would be just so much easier if they just made an access panel inside the van to disconnect and remove the battery. Hell you could have even moved them inside the frame rail then.
Seriously! Be a fun mod you could do
I agree 100% why they made no access panel from inside the van is beyond me a simple access panel will at least give you the ability to do a repair or change connectors things like that worst Engineers ever
My super duty van only has one extra battery lucky for me
HONEST, You have absolutely no idea how much I appreciate you posting this work. I have been avoiding this project for quite some time only because EVERYONE I have asked help from has been misinformed and scared of this ...They run like the f#$!ing plague ..thank you.
Howudooinralph glad I could help. I couldn’t find a video for this project when I did it, so I made one.
Totally agree! This video is so helpful. Thanks for the effort of shooting and posting it.
Likewise, thank you for awesome video. I also have been neglecting changing aux battery; so for a year, I disconnect negative and positive cables when parked :-)
This is the worst location I've even seen for batteries. I really want to relocate them inside behind the driver seat. They should have made a panel so the batteries could be easily accessed.
I have an '06 E350 6.0 Super Duty and saw someone, maybe it was the O/P (not sure) that said Ford ran a positive and negative lead up into the engine bay to ease jump starting....does anyone know where those leads would be located????....thx.
There's a power box in the engine compartment on the passenger side. I think you could do that there, but you'd really wanna get down closest to the batteries to get the best jump. I've done it both ways and the engine compartment doesn't seem to jump very well like it does under it. It's got leads right on the rail you can see in this video. It's just as easy.
I was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to lower both batteries at the same time?I have an 06 diesel and did this job about 7 years ago (without a floor jack which is dangerous and stoopid !)and I know I lowered them one at a time by hand. Just can't remember if I had to use wood blocks and lower them in steps/stages to get them on the floor.Yes I have a floor jack now, but only one. Thanks for the great video. I appreciate you doing it.
Glad you liked it. Ahh, the only problem I can see with doing one at a time is the wire length between the 2 batteries. You could probably lower one a bit, but it would put some strain on the wires. I guess you could try to reach up in there and disconnect them blindly.. but that seems like it'd be a lot harder. I'm sure you could rig up something else in place of a 2nd jack too, maybe a friend who doesn't know any better haha. Good luck!
It is not, I just lowered the rear most battery on a floor jack and there was enough slack to lower the jack all the way. My van is 4x4 so it sitting a couple inches higher, chances are on a stock van there is enough slack to get the battery to the ground. imgur.com/Qm4Tq7e
ford: found on road dumb
Thanks for the video. I removed my batteries 2 years ago to repair a broken connection. Not too complicated with a good jack. It's time for 2 new batteries.
How does the dual battery system work? Do you manually switch between the two?
From what I remember, they're two 12v batteries wired in parallel, both working at the same time.
If you needed a jump start, how would you do it?
There are actually extended wires to jump terminals up in the engine area. Handy!
Thanks for the video. As I type I am in this hellish process. Can you please tell me the nut size on the brackets? I believe you say that the grounding/retention cable is "a ten". Are the bracket ones also metric?
Thanks for the video. Just watching you work on sandals i was waiting for.
screw that anybody want to buy a good used van lol
Let me know if someone hits u up after u sold urs, i have one too
How much lol and where are you located
Hasan Mesl how much and location?
Did this exact process, and the van didn’t start, lights wont even flickers, all connections look good and it is grounded. Seen a spark from the ground wire like you did but it wouldn’t start
??? whatd you find out???
this can be done without jacks.......just sayin
I'm thinking about this idea... any suggestion(s) with only one person under truck? I can imagine battery falling out and ripping on negative and positive wires.
@@acemoto2319 lower the rear one first onto a block, slide it forward toward the front battery to allow for slack, then lower the front battery.
@@pablosixtyseven5028 Okay brilliant! Thank you Peter Ollie :-) Yes having a block or 2 blocks (large concrete or wood brick or maybe even new battery) will help manage the weight without a jack. This will leave just enough room to unbolt battery. I'm new to car mechanics, so this is great practical advice. Looking underneath a 1999 Ford E450, I was very perplexed. Thank you again for great info! Continued blessings :-)
@@acemoto2319 u don't even need blocks. just put one down then put down the other one, there's enough slack
@@an6350 Yes thanks, I now see how it's done without blocks or jack :-)
Do you know any tricks to changing the glow plugs and wires , there in a very tight spot.
They are in a very tight spot.
Nice video guys tha helps alot
you can do 1 at a time
Great video - thanks for posting.
I have an 01 and I only have one battery under the van. the other is under the hood.
and it's the 7.3.
Nice! one less to deal with underneath.
@@zackallen7820 Do all Ford diesel 7.3 have two batteries? (one under hood, and one under passenger side frame? thanks
Cool video! Is this the same on a 1999 E350 Diesel 7.3?
Yours has one under the hood and one under the frame
@@fuckbutton1462 Thank you!
I can't hear you
Cannot hear a word you are saying, you need to speak up! The ratchet is making plenty of noise, but cannot understand you.
All right, it's been four years.
Did you get some headphones?
