- This is a rundown of every song present that played on MTV's Total Request Live (TRL) in 1998. TRL ran every weekday on MTV from September 1998-November 2008. Viewers voted on the top 10 videos to be played each day.
The first episode of TRL aired on September 14th, 1998, so there's not too many videos for this year, but we already see the two main musical zeitgeists of the time competing here: boy bands and teen pop stars versus nu-metal and post-grunge.
Presented for archival and reporting purposes under fair dealing/fair use. I am not associated with MTV, Paramount or any record label/media company.
Countdown information for this year was found at atrl.net/forums/forum/22-recaps/ - thank you to ATRL for their very extensive archives of this show.
Songs that hit number one:
1. (God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You - *NSYNC (36 days)
2. All I Have To Give - Backstreet Boys (32 days)
3. Tearin’ Up My Heart - *NSYNC (27 days)
4. I’ll Never Break Your Heart - Backstreet Boys (17 days)
5. Freak on a Leash - Korn (10 days)
6. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays - *NSYNC (3 days)
7. Baby One More Time - Britney Spears (2 days)
Damn this makes me so nostalgic
Can't believe no one has video of when Korn finally beat the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC to get number one.
That was kind of a big deal for me lol
that's actually what let me to this clip, I was trying to find that
@@jiujitsumonkey1 I can't find it anywhere. I always thought that would be like a really big deal in the history of the band so I'm surprised they don't have something out about it. That was a big deal for me as a twelve-year-old the time
welcome back!! 🤩 i missed your videos
This is awesome!
I remeber watching t r l with Carson Daly and all thouse other music related shows like say what karaoke with Matt pinflied mtv jams with bill Bellamy and mtv spring break
Hype for a new series! I'll really miss the cancon though, i hope you are able to think of a new cancon series at some point
Don’t worry, I don’t intend to abandon the cancon! It just requires more research so takes longer (and frankly I find it more fun so I have that to look forward to in the new year)
I remember they said Aaliyah are you that somebody was 1 of the biggest songs on mtv that year.
As a kid, TRL blew my mind. I couldn't believe people could have such horrible taste in music. It crushed me.
Your so much cooler than the rest of us
Cope!
I can’t see what u talking bout cuz a lot of this music was good.. you are the 1 with bad taste of anything.
It's you who has bad taste in music.. Must suck to be so miserable ..
Please tell us what sophisticated music you preferred as a kid in 98 😂
