- Top 100 one hit wonders of all time, i really tried to make sure these are all actual one hit wonders and that the artists didnt have any other song with real success on any other major singles chart.
Let me know your rankings and favourites in the comments. Cheers!

Fair Dealing
Source: www.gov.uk/guidance/exception...
Certain exceptions only apply if the use of the work is a ‘fair dealing’. For example, the exceptions relating to research and private study, criticism or review, or news reporting.
‘Fair dealing’ is a legal term used to establish whether a use of copyright material is lawful or whether it infringes copyright. There is no statutory definition of fair dealing - it will always be a matter of fact, degree and impression in each case. The question to be asked is: how would a fair-minded and honest person have dealt with the work?
Factors that have been identified by the courts as relevant in determining whether a particular dealing with a work is fair include:
* does using the work affect the market for the original work? If a use of a work acts as a substitute for it, causing the owner to lose revenue, then it is not likely to be fair
* is the amount of the work taken reasonable and appropriate? Was it necessary to use the amount that was taken? Usually only part of a work may be used
The relative importance of any one factor will vary according to the case in hand and the type of dealing in question.
Source: www.bl.uk/business-and-ip-cen...
The concept of fair usage exists within UK copyright law; commonly referred to as fair dealing, or free use and fair practice. It’s a framework designed to allow the lawful use or reproduction of work without having to seek permission from the copyright owner(s) or creator(s) or infringing their interest.
Fair dealing law is not only applicable to text-based works; it applies to musical, dramatic, artistic, literary and typographical works too. However, it does not cover the copyright of printed music.
As an exception to British copyright law, fair dealing is governed by Sections 29 and 30 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, which outlines three instance where fair dealing is a legitimate defence:
* If the use is for the purposes of research or private study;
* If it is used for the purposes of criticism, review or quotation;
* Where it is utilised for the purposes of reporting current events (this does not apply to photographs)
A statutory definition for fair dealing does not exist; it will always be a matter of fact, degree and interpretation in every fair dealing case. Nor is there a percentage or quantitative measure to determine fair dealing. The Intellectual Property Office lists the key factors used to determine the validity of whether a particular dealing with a work is fair as follows:
* Has the use of the work impacted negatively on the market for the original work? If the creator or owner has lost potential revenue through the re-use of their work, it is not likely to be fair.
* Was it reasonable and necessary to use the amount of work that was taken?
The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 also outlines the potential fair dealing defences that permit the use of copyright works without permission from the author(s) or creator(s) under UK copyright law. - Розваги
I tried to make sure all of these songs were true one hit wonders without the artists having any other genuinely successful songs on main singles charts but just a few notes: if the artists OTHER 'hit' was a cover then i didnt count that, for example Sixpence None The Richer did cover There She Goes and Wheatus also did an Erasure cover. Michael Jackson wasnt an official feature for Somebody's Watching Me. Corinne Bailey Rae has another great song called Like A Star but it didnt chart well and for Brimful Of Asha the remix was Norman Cook, not him as Fatboy Slim. Im sure there are one or two others that people might question a bit though of course lol. Cheers!
Nice list - thanks! However, several of the entries are themselves covers (e.g., Mad World, La Bamba) so shouldn't these have been excluded?
@@Demo-critus Thanks! Well not if the cover was still their only hit, thats how i viewed it anyway. But if their only other successful song was a cover i thought i can count them as a one hit wonder if that makes sense lol.
@@MediaRanker92 Okay, thanks. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic list. I’d question two entries. Goyte has had a few hits in Australia, I love his albums. I’d never consider him a one hit wonder. I’m Australian so I might be biased! The second one is Gnarls Barkley. One of their albums had five Grammy nominations! They had a few hits out of the US. Anyway, that’s my five cents worth! I really enjoyed your list. Thanks 😊
Here's five more from the '70s;
- O-o-h Child, Five Stairsteps
- Brandy You're A Fine Girl, Looking Glass
- Ride Captain Ride, Blues Image
- Native New Yorker, Odyssey
- Hot Child In The City, Nick Gilder
In the year 2525, Eve of Destruction , Pass the Dutchie, How Bizzare, Sugar Sugar and Venus by Shocking Blue come to mind
The Turtles version? The others did have other successful (top 40) songs too though! For OMC it was mostly just in their native New Zealand but still. Thanks for watching
But The Archies and The Shocking Blue were not one hit wonders
Pass the Duchie was a great song. Still is.
Okay. Strictly speaking, a lot of these weren't actually "one hit wonders," but a fun compilation nonetheless.
I dont know about a lot lol another 'hit' does need to be in the top 40 of a main singles chart really but yeah there were some i had to work around for sure! But i was never going to do the thing of having a-Ha or Dexy's etc, the ones that people quite regularly wrongly deem as one hit wonders. Cheers
John Waite was not a one hit wonder
He was in terms of main singles charts, but of course he had other great songs though. Thanks for watching
Missing you. Only song of his I know
@andrewburton9643 Also "Change"
He did some great stuff with The Babys
He was also in Bad English with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain of Journey.
Thank you and I would say at least 70% of them im still listening too today 🙂
Thanks! Yeah many of these are pretty timeless actually...some we have probably already heard too many times lol
Some of my favorites: I Melt with You, Bittersweet Symphony, She Blinded Me with Science, Heart and Soul(T'Pau), What is Love(Haddaway), No Rain, The Way(Fastball), Jane's Getting Serious,
Yeah a few have mentioned I Melt With You, that will definitely be in part 2 if i do that. The Verve, Haddaway, T'Pau did all have other songs that did well in the charts, in fact i think China In Your Hand was a bigger hit than Heart And soul. Thanks for watching
Cool list! A lot of these I forgot about!
Thanks!
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Awesome songs!
Thanks very much! Lots of videos to come
I don't agree with every entry on this list, but I REALLY love that you gave us the music without the incessant commentary we get with most channels that do "top" lists. Bravo!
As in whether or not they are one hit wonders? Thanks lol i mean there really is a reason they have to do that though but i know what you mean. Cheers
Surprisingly awesome list!!!
Thanks!
I saw 8 artists that had had another charted song
i had to be a bit flexible, so if they had another that charted (at a much higher number) in a major chart somewhere i allowed that. And with what i said in my pinned comment, if that other song was a cover too ignored that. Cheers
Vanessa Carlton Thousand Miles should be in Top 10. My jam!
Its great i may have heard it too many times now though lol but it will always be an iconic one hit wonder! Thanks for watching
@@MediaRanker92She had other songs
Great video! If these dates are all correct then I feel old!
Lol well hopefully i havent got any wrong but there is a pretty big span of time here too! Thanks for watching
What's even more iconic, some od them gad pretty big career later as a musician or songwriter- for example, Thomas Bangalter grom Stardust was in Daft Punk before and after that group, same with Gbarls Barkley's CeeLo Green.
Oh yeah same with Gerry Rafferty In Stealers Wheel and a couple of others too, i was able to use the fact that that were as those specific artists for those songs so technically then one hit wonders! Thanks for watching
Berlin and Stevie V were one and a slice hit wonders.
Yeah i had Berlin - Take My Breath Away in there initially but they did just well enough with one or two others, in a few places, that i decided they couldnt be really. But some of these artists you really can accept both sides lol. Thanks for watching
I know this is a more of a "worldwide" list, but Foster the People had half a dozen gold singles in the US. Sit Next to Me was one of the top 75 year-end most played songs on radio in the US in 2018, and the single was 4x platinum.
Oh yeah this is just based on peak positions on main singles charts, not overall sales or anything, but they do have some other great songs, i really like 'Call It What You Want' too. But Pumped Up Kicks was the only hit in that regard. Cheers
I would add Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire (his only top 40 song) and One Tin Soldier by The Original Caste. (They had a second song that was a hit in Canada & Japan, but no where else.)
Great ones too! Definitely could do another part to this i think. Thanks for watching
Just a reminder that one-hit wonders are really about main singles chart numbers and placements. So while artists can have other great songs on great albums thats all we can go off of for this
Is this under a worldwide perspective or American? Los del Rio are very known in Spain, having, at least, another hit "Sevilla tiene un color especial"
This is worldwide, ill be honest i didnt even see that as a single they released? Did it chart well or is it just a big song in Spain generally? Cheers
I love The Middle by Jimmy Eat World! I had no idea they were a on hit wonder, they’re one of my favorite bands
Only in terms of main singles charts, they are a band that have obviously had success with albums and tours for a long time havent they. Cheers
Great Songs!! Memories of Back in the Day!!!
So many great one hit wonders from different eras too! Thanks for watching
As I make my list I just want to say that both Foghat & Buffalo Springfield had several great tunes
Oh yeah that will be true for other artists too but this is just purely about chart success, and i guess general radio play at the time in terms of what we think of as 'hits'. Cheers
One characteristic of these hits were either their very unique musical style and arrangement or the appeal of their lyrics
Yeah thats true, while still being very catchy and memorable of course. Thanks for watching
excellent choices
Thanks!
Great list but “walking on Sunshine” Catrina and the Waves?
I had walking on sunshine in there initially but they actually had another top 5 song, Katrina And The Waves, in several places in the late 90s too. Cheers
Great list! You should defo do a part two. My Baby Daddy by B-Rock and the Bizz (in the US), and one could argue Spaceman by Babylon Zoo (in the UK), although they had a second top 20 that only I remember!
Cheers! I likely will do a part 2 at some point so ill definitely add those to the list. Thanks for watching
@@MediaRanker92 Thanks for all your hard work on these videos. They're always fun and interesting. I'll try to send you some other suggestions for one-hit wonders if I think of any. Just don't include Tiffany, cos she ain't no one-hit wonder, lol.
PS: I understand your channel is all about rankings, which is totally cool. But if you'd ever be inclined to organise lists like this in chrono order instead, that would could make it more negotiable for some people (me!). Especially because of how short the clips are (which I understand is due to copyrights), it's hard to take everything in so quickly (audio, video, info graphics, subtitles, etc.) I sometimes have to play them in slo-mo to catch everything. 🙂
@@carybenjaminportway I agree, I would prefer to see them in chrono order... After all, ranking them by one person's opinions doesn't mean anything to anyone else.
Surprised "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez didn't make this list.
Actually yeah that could've been there! If i do a part 2 it definitely will be. Thanks for watching
Thank you for not adding aha’s Take On Me (not a one hit wonder), but where is Come On Eileen?? A #1 song from Dexy’s Midnight Runners (who? exactly!)
Thanks! Well no they also had other hit songs lol a song called Geno which you might recognize the instrumental part at least and another pretty big one called Jackie Wilson. Check those out 👍
@@MediaRanker92 You are not wrong if this is a worldwide list. I was looking at it from a US perspective where Come On Eileen was their only top 40 hit. Great list though.
Awolnation and video kill radio Upstar my favorite ❤
Two bangers! Thanks for watching
How about “I melt with you” by modern English? That was the first example I thought of when I saw this video
Definitely could have been there, if i ever do a part 2 that will surely be in it. Cheers
Foghat performed for years and had several hits.
Slow Ride was their only top 20 on any major chart though even if they have many other great songs. Cheers
Taake On Me. Taake Me Oon. i’ll be gone
Brilliant song, but a-Ha did have some other hits too, maybe not in america but definitely in europe. Thanks for watching
@@MediaRanker92 but take on me total eclipse other song a-ha
@@kryshun.n6017 True and to be honest thats how i would view one hit wonders personally but it turns out its more accurate to go off of overall chart success. And i guess thats only fair really. Cheers
Sixpence none the richer we’re not a one hit wonder they also had start success with singles like breathe your name, and their covers there she goes again, and don’t dream it’s over with all cracked that’s not 40 of the US Billboard charts and even the top 20 of the UK charts. Buffalo Springfield was also not a one hit wonder they were pretty big in the mid late 60s. But I also think what constitutes as a one hit wonder it’s pretty subjective, because if we go off bands that had a top 40 hi technically Frank Zappa, and Jimi Hendrix could be considered one hit wonders since I only had one top 40 hit, also bands like the Ramones never even had a top 40 hit in the United States, and the Clash only ever had one.
Yeah i almost entirely had to go off of main singles charts, and still be a bit flexible with it too, in the pinned comment i talked about covers as a way of narrowing it down too. And yeah some of these were big artists overall, or had big artists as members of the group but that group only had one hit song etc. Its hard to be fully consistent with a video like this really. Cheers
How Bizarre - OMC
I did have that in there initially but they did have 3 other top 40 songs in New Zealand so i thought thats probably enough for them to not count really. Cheers
How is shackles praise you so damn high? I’ve never even heard that one.
Oh wow really that was pretty big one, here in the UK in the US but also charted well in quite a lot of other countries too! Definitely give that one a few listens it gets better and better. Cheers
@@MediaRanker92 interesting. Will have to listen. Was wonderwall on here?
@@El_Bueno Oh you could upset a lot of Brits with that one lol Oasis had a LOT of hits! Probably in other countries too but maybe not America. Cheers
11 historic
Definitely, first ever video played on MTV too if im not mistaken. Cheers
Great list. I would argue John Waite and Foster the People were not hit wonders. Waite had 3 songs within the top 40 on the US charts. Foster the People had two albums that were top 10 with two big hits. I would maybe add Devo, Tommy Tutone, Eddy Grant, Falco and Modern English.
Thanks, yeah its difficult but i could only go off main singles charts and even then you cant be completely consistent with it. Eddy Grant and Falco did have other successful songs in that sense. Also depends on region too, some artists are a one hit wonder in one place but not others. Cheers
Player had 3 (count 'em) 3 top 40 hits. And you left off Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes", White Plains " My Baby Loves Lovin'", First Class' "Beach Baby", Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand", and The Pipkins "Gimme Dat Ding" all one-hit wonders and all sung lead vocals by the great Tony Burrows. And no love, I see, for "Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears. These types of "ranked" lists (by who?) are nothing but click bait.
Player were one where i was a bit flexible because it truly was just North America where they had a couple of other successful songs to a much lesser degree, but 'Baby Come Back' was a genuine international hit. I will likely be doing a part 2 so i will definitely add those to the list. I havent mentioned sales or a source or anything...thats because its clearly ranked by ME lol its my opinion so no, not clickbait at all. Cheers
How could you miss Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass??
I was going to have it but that Jimmy Loves Mary song did get into the top 40 in 2 or 3 countries. If it was just one country i probably would have included it though. But if i do a part 2 i will have to be more flexible with it so that will definitely be there. Cheers
Kaoma is one hit wonder only for non brazillian people, their songs is BOP in brazil
Yeah this is specifically about main singles chart placements. even if the artist is bigger generally speaking. Cheers
And Walking on sunshine ??
Katrina And The Waves did have another hit in the late 90s. Thanks
I recognize most of these songs! Quite a few of my favorites are on that list 😃
Whats your number 1 one hit wonder of all time? cheers
what about escape(the pina colada song) by rupert homes?
He did have another couple of relatively successful songs though on the main charts, well mostly just the song Him but enough to count as another hit really. Cheers
I would like to see a video about "Well & Truly One Hit Wonders" about musical acts who only had 1 song and that's it, excluding charity songs:-
Monster Mash.
Clive Dunn - Grandad.
St. Winifred's School Choir - There's No-One Quite Like Grandma.
Anita Dobson - Anyone Can Fall in Love.
Mr. Blobby.
Teletubbies - Say Eh-Oh.
Wubb Girlz - Sing a Song.
£1 Fish Man - £1 Fish.
Oh you mean specifically only ever released one single officially? Yeah thats a good idea actually. Cheers
@@MediaRanker92 Artists who only ever released one single officially are true "one hit wonders".
@@charlii_tvMMVI well only if it was a true hit though lol but i know thats what you mean in the end. Cheers
Ace - how long. Love love love that song, had it on repeat lately. Vanessa amorosi did a nice cover recently . and there's a cool house version of that song on spotify too. David bowies version is great also
It is a great song isnt it! I actually dont know those other versions ill have to check them out. Thanks for watching
Last Song 🎵, by Edward Bear 🐻
They did have quite a few top 40 songs in Canada though, even if that was their only major hit that went international to any degree. Thanks for watching
Fun concept, and thanks for the work on this. But perhaps there are mistakes: Buffalo Springfield was a one hit wonder?!
Thanks! Well technically yeah, can only go off of singles chart numbers for this and 'For What Its Worth' was their only top 40 song. They didnt release that many though. Cheers
Chesney Hawkes had a few follow up singles such as ‘I’m A Man Not A Boy,’ and ‘What’s Wrong With This Picture.’
True but neither broke into the top 20 of any major market singles chart. And he is also one who is really known as a one hit wonder i feel. Thanks for watching
Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525, was #1 for five weeks, their only hit
Yeah that one really shouldve been here actually, if i do a part 2 it definitely will be! Thanks for watching
Mary Mary is not a 1 hit wonder, they had multiple gospel crossover to rnb charts, biz Markie, Patrice rushen
I know but this is only main singles charts for each country, because not all countries have specifc genre charts etc so then its not equal if you see what i mean. Thanks

Great list, surprised Stuck In The Middle With You wasn't there though! yeah i can hear that lol it definitely sounds like a big song from a big artist way before his time!
4 Non Blondes, Portugal. the Man & Daniel Powter had other songs.
4 Non Blondes- Spaceman
Kaoma-Dança Lambada
Rockwell-Knife
Yeah Spaceman did get into the 20s in a couple of places but 4 Non Blondes are own of the biggest known one hit wonders if you see what mean. Is that a different version of Lambada? Rockwell Knife didnt actually chart though. Thanks for watching
@@MediaRanker92 Knife is very well known in Brazil, maybe even more than Somebody's Watching Me

Macarena at 23? I thought that would be higher hahaha
Well in terms of how big it was as a one hit wonder it could have been, i just think we have all heard it a bit too much now lol. Cheers
Jimmy eat world has many hits, their whole bleed American record is stacked
Oh yeah there will be a few here that do really have other great songs, on great albums, but this is just about major singles chart numbers so that was their only real hit in that sense. Cheers
Left out Billy Thorpe children of the sun
Definitely a top 100
Being completed honest i didnt know that one and it didnt come up in my research, i think maybe it didnt officially chart well even if it was a big song overall. If i do a part 2 ill definitely include it, cheers
This is probably the most accurate 'one hit wonder' compilation on UA-cam. Following your criteria that any second hit can't be a cover, the only one I have contention with is Snow, as he had a top 20 billboard Hot 100 hit with "Girl I've Been Hurt".
Thanks! Yeah i did see that, with Snow because that was the only other song i did go more with the fact that he is really well known as a one hit wonder with Informer if you see what i mean. Similar with Vanilla Ice (well he was even bigger), i think had one other song that did ok in the main charts but he is so well known as a one hit wonder for Ice Ice Baby.
1.......gangam style
He had that 'Gentleman' song too though, and i think more hits in Korea. Cheers
Kung Fu fighting No 15 are you kidding ? It was No1 in 17 countries and one of the top 10 biggest selling singles of all time.
The ranking is just personal taste but of course it was/is huge. I may have just heard it too many times now lol. Cheers
61 🎉🎉🎉
Wonder why most of them were one hit wonders💯🇬🇧
Sometimes they can have other great songs, songs even better than the hit, but for whatever reason they just didnt get the same radio play and then sales etc. Thanks for watching
Foghat isn't one hit wonder i think
They are really in terms of main singles charts, and actually Slow Ride only got to 20 in the US for example and that was their best in that sense so i think that song has become more of a hit over time
Will any of them have another hit ?
A couple of the more recent ones could, if they are still active artists. Portgual. The Man perhaps, maybe Awolnation too. Cheers
Come on Eileen???
In some places Dexy's may have been a one hit wonder but overall they werent, they had some other successful chart songs...their song Geno is great you should check that out. Thanks for watching
@@MediaRanker92 we connected tambien tuvo mucho éxito, sin embargo two of hearts lo tienes como one hit wonder 🤷🏽♂️

I don't feel that it's fair to include John Waite on the list as he's the lead singer of Bad English and they had a #1 hit with "When I See You Smile" in 1989.
Well i have to be a bit flexible with it and as that was just him solo it is technically right but i know what you mean overall! Same with the fact that the Brimful Of Asha remix was Norman Cook not as Fatboy Slim so that means i could use that too, and its a remix anyway. Thanks for watching
How Bizarre?
OMC did have some other successful songs, overall but also especially in New Zealand where they are from. Thanks for watching

Mary Mary is so far from a one hit wonder
But for this i could only go off of main singles charts, they are in terms of that. For specifc charts like gosepl and R&B they arent of course but hits are about more mainstream pop in the end arent they. Thanks for watching
Number 47 ranked too low. Should be in the top 10 minimum.
Agree to Disagree
I would throw "American Pie" by Don McLean". Top 10 on my list. Feel free to get rid of the Macarena to create a spot. Blech. Maybe my least favorite song ever.
He did actually have another couple of hits though, Crying was one of them from what i remember. Oh yeah i dont like that, or Ice Ice Baby really, but they were so big as one hit wonders they had to be there really and quite high up! Thanks
What about Kylie Minogue?
You might get some replies from Aussies and Brits on that one lol she had a lot of hits. Thanks for watching
Huh? In US billboard hot 100, she has 2 top 10. And just won a Grammy this year..Padam!
