Still rocking my 15+ year old Clevelands. They're not quite as worn as that Vokey, but still fine for shooting high 70s on a good day. It's the Indian not the bow.....

Great advice Simon! I have some pretty burnt out Cleveland tour action reg 588 wedges. As a result of not being scared to injure them, my short game has improved a ton compared to me being scared of bunkers with a newer wedge because I didn't want to mess up the finish.

Mind blown in terms of perspective…legit u put words, to how the benefits of coaching and practice vs new equipment creates long term benefits!!!

Always find the dynamic between coaches and manufacturers interesting. Manufacturers want us to believe that new stuff WILL improve my game. Nice for some to tell it how it is. My wedge game is crap because I dont put the hours in. Mental not, use an 8 iron.

Whats up Simon! I'm new to the sport and have been watching your videos for a couple months, I think this is a fantastic video. It really helps to see the actual, on the course, differences between the wedges...andit isn't all that much. Anyways - trying to get into the sport at a decent price, I'll probably just wait until after christmas to get my first set of clubs since the season is closing by me, but im about to find a set of wedges like you mentioned to practice with in the mean time!! great videos dude you have a great out look to the sport of golf.

Sensible advice. I've not been playing long and I've started with a secondhand set of clubs. When I can play consistently with them then I will consider an upgrade starting with the wedges and irons. This applies to most sports equipment. Of course when you are really good you can pick up any old clubs and make a decent job of it. New fitted clubs add that final 5-10% to an already good players game. Love the videos, keep them coming.

I have always had a set of winter wedges - as you say it's all about confidence so the soggy lies over the winter that lead to fats and thins will be forgotten once the clocks go forward again and my real wedges come back out.... I can blame the early bad shots on dialling the back in and off I go. I do the same with the putter and get the old dead center back out to save the nice pxg one from the scratches and getting put away wet

That's a great point about skill level vs the amount of gains you can expect from equipment. Complete beginner or high handicappers may see almost no gains between cheap or expensive equipment and even mid to lower handicappers may only realize minimal differences that might have little or even no actual impact to their score. I honestly believe a lot of it comes down to enjoyment and obviously the more you enjoy the game the more you play and the better you get.

Great video and really good your showing how small the difference is. Putt the hours in and you will become a good wedge player. Don't and you won't.

Regarding spinning your wedges, I once asked my teaching pro to teach me how to put backspin on my wedges. He asked where my approach shots tended to hit the green, above the pin or below? I responded almost always below. “Then why should I teach you how to spin them, then?”, he said. Lesson learned.

I need to change out my Cleveland CG14 54 and 60 from 2009 ( looking to join up with local club for first time next year and enter comps etc so the zip grooves are part of the non conforming list ). I still use cavity back irons so seeing the Cleveland CBX range as a good potential model to look at

Interesting that you would do this video. I still use my 1998 Vokey 56.14 and I've been looking to replace it for a couple of years. It is in slightly better shape than your example, however it still spins the ball and will check up when I need it. I sometimes feel embarrassed when I pull the club out, but I don't want to spend $160 to replace it, and used Vokey's are still $100. Guess I'm stuck with the club, but I'm not really sure I need to replace it.
