I knew a little bit about this, but I like how you also tied some historical context into the story. It helps people understand what was going on in the world and why people may have made certain life decisions to hide where they were from.
I wish more people would be proud of their race and culture. There are good people and bad actors in every country and culture. Judge the person before you and don’t generalize what a few bad apple might do onto everyone from that community. If you are kind to others and do your best to represent yourself well, hopefully people will think kindly upon your own people. The more of us who do this, the more accepting of others our world will become.

Been watching music/gear stuff on UA-cam for a looooong time, and if I make it to 5 minutes on any vid that's a lot, but I've gone the distance on all these Ministry vids. Like finding fresh water in the middle of a harsh desert. Keep rockin' Utkarsh.

Fantastic story. Well told. As someone whose parents are from different countries, I was exposed to two different cultures and have thought a lot about how much that influences one’s identity. I know what it’s like to grow up in a very homogenous place and be a racial minority, and how as a child you want to hide that part of you and disconnect from it so you can fit in. As an adult, I recently had the chance to live for 1 year in my mother’s home country and that really made me appreciate my family roots at a deeper level. It was so great to learn this much about Freddie’s upbringing. Thank you for telling that part of his story.

Beautiful story thanks for posting! I’ve always been intrigued with Freddie and him being born a Zoroaster. Some scholars believe the Zoroaster religion was responsible for inspiring Judaism and of course Christianity after that ..very interesting stuff ! I remember crying for hours and hours after he died way back in 1991. Long live Freddie !

I appreciate the Eastern perspective you bring to my Western myopia. I have a history degree so I’m not ignorant of world history, but it always nice to be reminded that the world wasn’t created in the West and that others have had as significant or more an impact than we have over here.

Thanks for sharing your insights. I've always been fascinated by his origins. Even thoughmanh people say he sounded totally English, a bit of his Indian accent persisted. You can hear it at Live Aid when he addresses the crowd, saying" Thank you for coming along and making this a great occasion. " Its especially noticeable on the word : " occasion." There's a lilt & a rhythm also. It's lovely, his speech is beautiful. Thanks again.

I do agree that his immigrant status was glossed over. I think he came to the U.K. as a British Citizen because of his father's job, otherwise he'd have been a British Subject. It was easier in that respect for him to say he was British. I remember an interview and he was asked what his parents were doing in Zanzibar. I'm not sure if the interviewer understood that there was a Parsee community there. Freddie said something like "just hanging out". He apparently really didn't like to talk about his childhood or his family because he felt that Freddie Mercury was a rock singer and performer, and Freddie/Farokh Bulsara was the man behind that. I remember growing up always knowing that Freddie Mercury was Indian but it didn't mean anything to me as a white British child. Now, listening back to his music through that lens (if you can listen through a lens), and watching his performances, I can see it. I can see the influence very clearly. The secret wasn't really where he was born or brought up, which we all knew, but the secret was what it meant to him.

He did try to hide his Indian identity. I think he even referred to himself and the band as English white boys. I am a big fan since childhood, growing up in England. I was even at the shooting of the video for we are the champions in London. I didn't realize he was Indian till much later. Love the video Thank you!!!

I think in the context of pre civil rights 1960s, it was the obvious thing to do. All Indians knew Freddie hid his Indian identity but that doesn't reduce their love for him. At that time, things were different. Thank God, things today are so much better

Roots and identity are or at least can be two different things. As a Dutchman I rather move to Germany or France than to Amsterdam or The Hague.
In France I avoid Dutch owned campings like the plague 😂
I am not saying you are wrong, I 100% stand by your point.

I didn’t know that! It makes sense, but that’s more curious because she came around at a time when ethnocentrism was still a bit strong, but it is less so today. Wouldn’t she want to be more proud of who she is now that she’s reached such success for over two decades now?

    • @ministryofguitar

My sense , without having spoken to her, is that Norah Jones hardly identifies with her Indian side. She was estranged with her father and in any case grew up in the USA raised by her American mother. There is a distant family connection I have with the Shankars (Nora’s uncle Uday Shankar, Ravi Shankar’s older brother and one of India’s dance icons was a good family friend of my maternal grandmothers family) but I doubt there is anything left that I can leverage on to connect with her

First off. Freddie said he was 7 years old when he was shiped off for 2 /in a half months by
himself with no chaperon. And I Quote Freddie here. “It was an upheaval if a childhood. The kids at school named him Freddie. He was at that school from from 7 to 17. Freddie and Roger shared a flat together and they worked in shop, selling used clothing. . The movie was completely Fictional
Please don't go by the movie. It is not a documentary, as stated by Brian and Roger, and all who worked on the film. It wasn't meant to be.
Freddie wss The most beautiful soul that was ever created. And I mean that. His kindness to all who entered his life.
His Generosity was to everyone, all people His Integrity was that of.a God. Music poured out of soul. He was a PerfectionistI in everything he did. He was ROCK GOD, as well as an English Gentlemen.
I could go on and on, but it would be too long to post. So, just a bit of information here. Thank you for your video.....
