At my farm one of the very first things we purchased after our seacan was a riding mower to maintain the area we relax in. Second purchase was a generator. Our seacan came with an A/C installed since our summers can get hot and winters are brutally cold. We bought a generator that is big enough to run a few heaters or our ac. I'm a carpenter by trade so already have tons of tools. The generator allows me to run any tools I need to use plus keeps us comfortable during bad weather.
Dude I just run a 2x6 border flat inside and out bolted together caulked the hell out of it. Next i ripped a 1x6 to fit for a jam and just hung the window and door as normal. Been a carpenter for 45 years. I did two doors and two windows on two containers in a day. and I'm 68 years old. I did buy a metal blade for my 40-year-old Skilsaw and it cut like butter.

I used a 20 Volt Worx Drill and drilled 1/2” holes (3/16 pilot) in the 4 corners 5 minutes and then a 20 Volt Worx Recip to cut a 36” x 36” Window with 1 shared battery and 2 blades in 5 minutes also. I tried a Grinder for my solar vent hole and back to that skinny blade Recip.
I've watched a couple of videos and they used a sawzall, of course with metal cutting blades and it appeared to work quite well.
I just got a 20' shipping container I'm going to use to store and work on my Harleys.
I'm not putting in windows, but I will install a couple of vents with a fan and a door, and possibly a small 110 air-conditioner. (Portable heating to)
I've also purchased 2x4s for framing the interior and insulation.
Hope to be done next month.

I had exactly the same problem with my grinding, that corton steel is insane. Apparently using a sawzall or jigsaw with a metal cutting bit will make it SO fast. Took me 2 hours to cut out my vent hole with my angle grinder and it looked terrible. Then went to cut another hole and used a sawzall and it took me 10 mins. >.< The trick for straight lines on the container walls is a piece of thick poster board or cardboard. It conforms to the corrugation without losing it's straight edge. GL with your build. If I had to do mine again I would have skipped windows altogether as they are a pita and just break the wind and water tightness of the building.

Oh, there are many ways to skin a cat. When I was building and remodeling cold storage facilities, we would trim that with metal for the industrial look. Just have the metal guy form it. Great learning and information. Thanks for sharing.

I found that using the sawzall went really fast and kept my battery life WAY UP. Containers arrive in all kinds of conditions. We spent a lot of money doing laser leveling on our peers only to find that the container wasn't straight, square nor level.
Most containers sold are removed from cargo service because of damage especially corrosion and bad end door gaskets. I warn others against buying them for anything but workshop or rough storage use.
For a residence or nicer workshop a "one trip" grade is vastly better but harder to find and more expensive. I made the mistake of using two "Wind and Water Tight" grade shitboxes. Never again and the next two are nice clean 40' High Cubes with doors on both ends. My foundation is steel beams (used of course) so the whole structure will remain easy to jack and shim if it ever shifted which is unlikely.
I use recip saws, an OA torch and one of my favorites, 6" thin kerf abrasive cutting disks on an angle grinder. Any local welding supply carries them and I buy by the box. They'll cut steel plate and I've sliced the end off a truck axle (not the housing, the axle which is forged) with them.
I'm really enjoying this series as we are considering a container cabin build in the future. Appreciate the information. You smell like metal and fire. Haha!

Green Dream Project You know I considered it but I just have this internal angst towards Wisconsin. Hate is too strong and dislike is not strong enough. I will shop at Menard’s because they are close but if I am dropping a couple of hundred or care about the quality of wood then I traveling to Hope Depot.

Fernando Ramirez we will be might it might have to be next year. Our hard drive physically crashed and we lost some footage. I know it sucks. We probably need to do a video on backing up your data which is the project I am working on now.

I am also in MN, a little north of the twin cities. Have you see any good resources or tutorials in regards to attaching a wood frame in a quality manner while making sure it's water and air tight without adding siding to the container afterwards? Thanks again for the great video.
You don’t need to attach a wood frame to the container. You screw in to the floor then everything gets pounded and wedged in as you go and screw it together so it becomes solid.
As far as water and air tight you need to think about heating and cooling. I bought a combo unit and it’s exhaust fits in the window nicely but the air intake is within the room which is small. You open the window and it whistles until you open it far enough.
I might make a path from the garage area to the living area to pull air from. Other wise on really cold nights it doesn’t heat up fast enough because of opening the window.
I would put some type of roof on it because the windows and door are not made to have water sit on top there usually some type of over hang.

2:36 "More time OR more batteries." That...OR get a smallish (4KW or so) gas or propane (I prefer propane) generator for the heavy duty jobs that typically eat up batteries.
Mountain Crest Farm yeah I really really really wanted to upgrade to some Dewalt 20 volt max. So I stayed on the course so I didn’t feel guilty for buying myself some toys. Hoping I would get faster and more efficient. I did but not enough.
You should’ve used a 24 inch cut off saw and then used to hand grinder to finish. Would do it in three minutes.
Dude you should’ve got the flexvolt grinder. You could’ve cut that in one shot without changing the battery.

Battery 5" grinder??? You can buy a generator and a 6/7" grinder for the price of those batteries. Batt angle grinders, and 5" or for tiny jobs. Very handy for 80% of stuff. But any real work, you need 110 and big disk.

Do you seal the roof
No we did not. We will have to do something because we did buy a container that has some dents in the roof but it is over the garage part. I am going to take a 4 X 4 and a hydraulic jack to pop them out. I do think that I am going to put some type of roof on it because when it rains it flows down on all sides so Getting in and out of the front door can be a little wet. I will probably weld on and then make a roof. We do also plan to do a complete paint job with a rubbery paint that acts as another layer of insulation.

Why not use 2 by 4 steel tubes for the frame?
You have to put it through a I am poor filter and low skill filter. We bought the land. That was 12k out of savings. Then we were not expecting to have to have a shelter solution as soon as we did. We were also buying a lot of other things that I never had before, atv, chainsaw, etc.
Like many things you have to scale up. We are just now getting electricity. We put in a well, 100ft. By 200ft deer fence. Now Heather and I are further along in our careers and income so more decisions are invested in for long term more often. Some things we say this is good enough until we can permanently move there.
Turning a container in to a house cost more then you think more then building out of wood. In MN they sweat on the inside do to are wheather, when done you will not see but will smell later (mold). I have remolded pole barns on 6 yrs old with spray foam and were molding on inside.

We can see the difference with sweating from the insulated side to the non. We will see how it goes. I like that we got it partially done this year so we can see if there are any opportunities to improve before putting in dry wall. Also we are going to be putting on a roof and other things to reduce the heat induction and reduce the chances of sweating.
If it turns out to be a disaster as you are foreshadowing then there will be value in sharing that with folks also.
I agree that if you get more than one shipping container and then weld them together and add steel beams for strength then you are just doing it because you like the shipping container aesthetic. It is not cost effective per square foot.
For our application, what we need and are using it for we made the best choice. When we move to the land full time then we will build a farm sheik palace of a pole barn on roids.🤪

Suzanne Du4 it could be!?! I would have to try it out but any saw with the right blade is a consideration. But you want consistent and true. A small blade leads to inconsistencies. I would go with a big blade that makes a more consistent line.

2 trademarks of a finnish carpenter and 2 trademarks of an irish carpenter..... a good journeyman carpenter NEVER uses a mitre joint on external window trim as this creates a suck hole for moisture / rain..... always use a butt joint for increased weather resistance.... the other thing that sucks to see is all the people who dont do a plumb cut on rafter ends____ Please.... for Chrise sake, take pride in your work and do it right the 1st time

At the start we were working within a tight budget on borrowed money. I feel guilty buying stuff for myself, but I always wanted to get Dewalt tools and we didn't feel like we had the money for a generator right away. I also was a little scared of having a cord attached while up on a ladder. But in hindsight you are completely correct.
You spend most of the video telling us what you learned the hard way as you pave never done this before. Just like those you mentioned in the beginning
How did you just learn that now? Cordless stuff is fine for a limited use. But when it comes to working all day long, you need to be plugged into an outlet. That was a naïve oversight. Whether it’s a power station, or a gas generator, remote work requires some kind of power source. Being at the mercy of the neighbor throwing a cord out his garage window is simply bad planning
