I like how they actually fight like they would in the movies. Luke uses more basic moves while Maul tries the fancy stuff.
Thanks! We tried to be conscious of that when putting it together.
FreakDaMIghet for sure!
It's true to their fighting forms. Luke uses traditional form 5 which relies on strength and strategic bursts of power. It has an emphasis on defense and counterattack. Maul uses form 7 which is highly offensive and aims to overwhelm an opponent with speed and aggression
I've always wanted to see Luke Skywalker fight Darth Maul! awesome work!
+Nicolas Matteo Glad you liked it!
Excellent choreography. I really enjoyed it and it was great to see Maul being a badass Sith Lord again in this fan film. I'm happy you made it.
Hell yeah! What a fight! Loved seeing Luke! This could also legit happen with Maul being alive again hah! So glad you made this.
Everybody misses Luke.
Apsis Motion Pictures are those ultra sabers your using
zeonthefox
The saber Maul is using is a standard issue staff from Ultrasabers. The saber that Luke is using was custom built with parts from Custom Saber Shop.
Antoine Bandele What would Anakin Skywalker say about this video?
+Antoine Bandele Due to Mauls body disappearing instantly, I can't help but think this would have been an encounter with Lumiya, and one of her physical force illusions.. I know, someone will argue the case of Kenobi, but the technique does require a moment of preparation, complete immersion in the force and complete detachment from the physical body, something I can't help but think to be outside the capabilities of most darksiders.
That was freaking awesome. Man I hope they find a way to make a canon Luke Vs. Maul battle in canon.

Legends:Luke vs Darth Maul
Darth Maul:……Foolish Jedi
Luke:…
*Luke makes a black hole*
Lmao grandmaster luke is basically a god in legends
This is exactly how I imagine ROTJ Luke fighting against Darth Maul. Your styles reflect their movie styles so accurately! Amazing piece of work.
The performers get all the credit on that. They showed up with all of it.
Great lighting, camera work, choreography and nice special effects. Would have been cool to see the double bladed Saber appear, but Maul was going easy on him.
Luke Skywalker is the most powerful Jedi of all time I don’t think he was going easy on him 😂
@@Anonymous2054 Cool fight, closely matched. Haven't watched it since 2014. Good to see it again. Luke kicked @ss, agreed.
@@BlackArroToons yea but I think maul would hold his on if vader can he can
Finale of The Mandalorian season 2 reminded me of this for some odd reason, and how much I really missed seeing jedi master Luke Skywalker on screen.
We were definitely trying to pull on some of the same threads.
This is definitely one of the best Star Wars fan films I've seen. I love how we never get a clear shot at Luke's face in order to hide the different actor. It made the video feel more like it was an official Star Wars fight that you would see in canon material.
+AttackofCheese Glad to hear you liked it! And that you picked up we made sure to hide faces as much as possible.
It just hit me: was that ONE UNCUT TAKE? dang. :O
All the best,
-Beau
Yep, one take from the initial engagement to the kill shot.
samuelwslater
IMPOSSIBLE.
BeauCh Nope, not impossible. We did 2 full takes. We attempted a 3rd take, but Luke was performing on a severely sprained ankle and had tweaked it again during the performance.

The cast and crew are listed in the video description, but here's the acting cast:
Luke Skywalker- Chris Harper
Darth Maul- Sam Slater
Luke Skywalker (voice)- Paul A Snyder
R2D2 & droid Wrangler- Jason Pangborn
Darth Maul doesn't even look like he's trying, so rehearsed looking.
I knew this video deserved more critical acclaim! By leaps and bounds this video has the highest view count of all LCC XII's entrees. How did it not even place? Again, I offer my congratulations on job well done.
Thank you sir! I haven't gone through and looked at views on all of the other entries; that's kind of cool. The judges had their reasons for not placing this video. Personally, I'm just going to take what they and those commenting are saying and try to improve as an actor. It is good to hear compliments from other film makers such as yourself, thanks!
Luke in this video used more of a form 4 style which was what Qui Gon used, and of course he had some form 5 stuff, but he usually picks the form 5 which we saw in the movies, but I like how Luke was wise when he picked hid fighting style, Maul's fighting style was totally accurate to episode 1's version
Again, you've totally aced a sabre battle!!! You guys continue to amaze me with your skills and choreography!
Why didn't Darth Maul ever activate the second blade? If it didn't function, he should've just shown up with a smaller, easier to handle lightsaber. If it did function, it probably would've helped because he knows how to use it and Luke's never faced anything like it (in the movies).
+Brandon Hawkins You'd have to ask him. In 50% of the canon fights with Darth Maul committed to live action film, he only uses one blade.
+Brandon Hawkins The choreography was initially planned to have Maul use both sides of his staff, but it was realized that Maul only used one side of his saber fighting Qui-Gon on Tattooine. Because Luke is reading Maul's presence off Qui-Gon's comm, he wouldn't see Maul with both sides lit.
+Sam Slater Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for replying!
+Brandon Hawkins On another note, the extended hilt with a single blade actually makes it easier to handle. There's more to grip and easier to spin, which is Darth Maul's style anyway, so it kinda works.
+Mike Siegert Darth Maul usually or only uses 1 blade for battling only 1 opponent but two blades for more than one opponents
I love that they essentially preserved the base fighting style of each fighter!
+Amanjot Mangat Thanks! Glad you liked that. We tried to keep it in mind.
aaah the switching off move. brilliant :3
I'm so proud of u luke for not falling to the darkside like your father which I love sense I was a kid anakin skywalker p.s i love y'all both
THIS WAS EPIC!!!!! GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS!!!
Great video, that was awesome! This video shows how powerful Luke is becoming, can't wait to see him in The Force Awakens!
The Maroon Spartan Glad you liked the video!
I'm impressed, Most of the fight scene is all one shot!
Very nice job! The fact that the fight consisted of mostly one long sweeping shot made it very interesting and unique. Well done!
I am in a little bit of awe, that was incredible. Highest production value of LCC XII, but I guess that's obvious. I love it when the entry with the highest production value also has killer chorio. This was awesome. Nice long shot, nice FX, nice costumes, nice makeup. Did not see this coming at all, well done. How many takes did the long action shot require?
We did two full takes of that fight on camera from the first strike to the kill shot. We started a third take, but ended up scrapping it half way thru due to an error. We reshot the kill a few times, alternating Maul wearing a green suit on legs then upper body in order to do the effect of being cut in half.
I don't think return of the Jedi era Luke would fair very well against Maul. Luke's movements were fairly obvious and primarily power blows in keeping with form V. Maul's great agility and martial knowledge would dance circles around him and just keep wearing down his defenses. Unless Luke falls back on his force abilities, its only a matter of time before Maul cuts him down. Very nice fight. I especially loved how you made Maul appear to be a force echo or apparition.
charles52able1 Glad you liked it and that you picked up on the force echo part.
Well even though Luke's style can easily fit into form V, he never had knowledge of Jedi fighting styles until he was older, for Luke's training was unorthodox in every way possible. To my knowledge, by the time he fought Vader on ROTJ he had his own, unpredictable self taught form that didn't follow any of the Old Jedi Order's doctrines - for if there's something we learned from Luke is that he is the master of thinking outside the box. I believe that he would be able to analyse his opponent and see that Maul's fighting style rely on both agility and mobility, and then proceed to adapt his own stances accordingly, without relying too much on pre-taught styles but rather on his own instincts.
I love that the whole fight is basically one long wide shot. Good job
Wow!That was Fantastic wonderful Battle super cool video Excellent
This is part of my childhood
Was this filmed with the intent to match up with a few Episode VII rumors? I imagine lining up with rumors weren't coincidental, but I could be wrong. GREAT editing though! The magic is in the editing, so George would be proud. ;)
We filmed this over the summer and at that time hadn't heard any rumors about Maul fighting Luke in the new film. Is that rumored to happen in Ep VII now?
Nah, Maul won't be in the film, but Luke going around the galaxy looking for something is potentially one. Great job. Did you film on location? =P Every part of this was quite fine. This deserves a fan film award. I've seen a ton of shitty fan films, and this clearly soars above those, lol.
starwarsjunkie7777 This was filmed on location at Barrick Quarry here in Maryland, with the exception of the shots of R2 wich were done in a parking lot with a green screen I believe.
Thanks for your kind comments regarding the film. Glad you enjoyed it.
spped up to 1.25 - welcome ;)
That whole fight I expected mail to use dracatus but look beat him to it well done
DarthKronikk Glad you liked it.
The Greatest Jedi Ever Luke Skywalker
This guys can be actors in Star Wars Episode 8
Awesome lightsaber action! Keep on being the best!
When you realize this was made almost two years before "The Force Awakens" actually was first seen in the theaters...so much time has passed since then.
Only for us to realize how much we miss the "Legends", however childish and pathos-overdozed they might have been.
Great job.
Noticed Luke had a lot of ways to finish Maul off before the official end of the duel. As well as Maul could have chopped him up more than once. Whatever it is, however.
my favorite sw fan film ever
+Stefan Lindbom Glad you liked it! Be sure to check out the other SW films the channel has put out.
that move at 2:07 ...... awesome ! i like EU Luke ! Hes the Son Goku of star wars : the most powerful good-guy^^

well done guys this is really amazing and inspiring to newbie and future filmmakers like myself.
Glad you liked it.
Great!
i like how luke has the hood up as he should when he duels in 8/9 assuming he does as hes to old to pull of any fancy moves and at this point luke should be a top 3 force user and easily a a top 10 duelest ever
Very well done!
Awsome video.
Glad you liked it!
Is it just me or do their blades look shorter than normal in this? Looks like they're using 32" or 30" blades instead of 36?
Why the hell am I watching this?!
Perfect.
+Tyler Youngkrantz Glad you think so! Thanks!
At 2.57 you can tell that who ever plays luke is just wearing a glove.
I guess in the Star Wars universe, lightning doesnt strike the same place 10 times
What a vid! Even know I got cut in half xD it was still awesome
this is dope af
+tony benedetti Thanks!
+Sam Slater please make more!!!
In star wars legions, some light-side force users use a version of force lightning that is golden, so that would be cool to have Luke manipulate the lightning there.
like it I will be checking out more of apsis motion pictures RG
R.G. Studios Glad you liked the film!
Where did you get the sound effects from? I've been looking for ages and can't find a good collection
Now that's very amazing video and a VERY amazing lightsaber duel. Now I'm really excited for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. 😃
Carlos Munoz Glad you liked the video!
Why thank you. Are you excited for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens? 😃
Carlos Munoz Personally ... of course!
It's going to be cold by the time Star Wars: Episode VII comes out in December.
Very nice! :)
Thanks!
Wow, What a creative Kill I don't think I have seen something like that... ever. Very awesome Fight. Loved seeing a Live action luke with all his skill after having known about all his adventures from the Expanded universe.. An amazing high quality fight like this makes me want to see like a compilation of Luke's best accomplishments/ epic fights up to where he is at the time of episode 7 since Mark Hamill is making an appearance.
Glad you enjoyed the video. The kill shot was fun to shoot. Kudos to the Director for making it work so well.
This is pretty good; the effects were good, the story while basic stayed lore friendly, and the acting was pretty good too. That being said, there were two things that I found that could have been improved.
First, the choreography while interesting felt a bit slow and dragged a few times; these guys are fighting to the death and two experienced fighters such as Maul and Luke would being swinging the those blades with swiftness and deadliness, and not only that but Maul was fast, ruthless, and _ferocious_ in battle. I would have also like to see him use his double blade more but, since this seems like Luke was looking into some sort of memory imprinted on the device and the last time Maul was on a sandy planet (Tatooine) he only used one blade, so I'll let that slide.
And lastly, there were a few times where Maul's actor seemed a little awkward in his stances like at 1:29, and not to nitpick, but didn't he wear a black robe that hid his features when he was on said sandy planet? But it's been a long time since the movies were released and I don't expect you to get every single detail right, so the outfit he was in was pretty good nonetheless and enhanced his presence.
Plus, the robe would have hid his lovely little red and black face, so we wouldn't know it was him if he had it. If the robe was a thing, nixing it was a good move.
Overall: 7.9 out of 10.
Thanks for the 7.9!
No problem~
I think that is a really fair assessment of this. For the EXCELLENT special effects and costuming, not to mention most of this appearing to be a single shot which is extremely difficult, I really would have liked better saber props. The fighting speed could have been upped in editing. This really didn't give us that feel of Maul's focus in Ataru and Juyo, but given that it appears to be a memory not the real Maul, again it is forgivable. Some close ups would have been nice but would have actually depreciated the value of the extended single shot. 7.9 seems very fair, though I think without the costuming and special effects it would have scored much lower, probably only a 4-6
This is Star Wars
beautifully made fanmovie! really good!
next time maybe just add some velocity to the fights (maybe 15% is enough), since now it's looking a bit like choreography and could have some more spirit, i figure..
but it's complaining on a high level! great fight! congrats! :)
I agree. Their need more intension behind the moves like their actually trying to kill one another like a desperate bid to survive: it looked a bit stilted. Other than that I really enjoyed it. Hope to see more.
What is this filmed with? You guys slayed it, definitely in the running for first in my opinion!
A little gopro, a little red, a little fs700, and a lot of 5d plus movi.
Wish I had that kind of equipment...Well good work once more.
DiscreetPenguin We'll we started on a lone humble miniDV, I forget the model.
tyr rollins Sony trv950
First camera was some Flipcam. Got a T3i myself. Don't get me wrong, I love it to death, but once you're in the game, you always want more, you know?
Nice.
Thanks!
Need some close-ups of your actors expressions, and quick editing to make the dueling more exciting.
That would have defeated the point.
This was a good lightsaber duel, but in the movies Luke almost always holds his lightsaber with both hands, as if it were a heavy weight. The fact that he opens his stances with the typical two-handed and switches to one-handed puts me off a little.
+ElderScrollsGamerFTW Sorry to hear that. Believe it or not, the actor doing Luke tried to keep that in mind, but his usual fighting style is one handed and this wasn't rehearsed enough to break him of that on every technique.
Awesome action sequences! I love this film! Could I use this film on my channel to do a review of and promote it?
You're more than welcome to review, and use clips for a review, it should go without saying; don't repost the film in its entirety.
Thanks. Yeah, just snippets in the post.
Awesome
Billy Price Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Please make more dude
Billy Price That's up to the Director, but he reads all these so he'll see your message. Let him know specifically what it is about this you want to see more of.
If you simply want more Apsis videos, check the Apsis Videos page (link below). There are several Star Wars fan films there, and there have been two other videos released by Apsis since this one came out.

I dont know his link but what I want to see is MORE Darth Maul...I always thought he was a BADASS
while i like the video, it seemed like both characters were more or less just prodding at each others sabers rather than at their opponent. while this makes sense for lukes defensive style, it makes no sense when applied to maul. just something to think about
Maybe Maul should say: "You have found Kenobi's weapon!", because Luke's lightsaber is almost same as Obi Wan's, and as we all know Kenobi and Maul are old enemies.
That battle has between Darth Maul and Luke Skywalker
I'm not a sword fighter but that fight choreography seem to show many, many mistakes where the fight would have ended seconds ago if not minutes.
Loving this fan film, excellent choreography but it could've been sped up to avoid the overly choreographed feel yet make it still look fantastic etc.
Thumbs up!
Great Video! Out of curiosity, is this supposed to be Grand Master Luke? Because if not, I think he would have been torn apart XD
Glad you liked the video.
I find it interesting that you think Luke would lose if this was not Grand Master Luke. He beat Vader on Degobah ...
That's true, but it wasn't the real Vader. Plus, Luke's never seen a duelist like Maul before. Vaders a very well rounded duelist, but Maul is, simply put, a power house. Once again, great job on the video! :D
Mr BUTTKNUCKLE Sr What makes you think that this was the real Maul?
I don't think it was, although it could be, since we still don't know if he's dead O_o
Nice 😎
Nicely filmed. On the down side, not enough force use or acrobatics during the fight. But still cool.
It is impressive that you did this as a single-take (if you didn't use cheats, which I feel you must have), but I actually think it would have been better to have used some cuts since the fight loses dynamics in spots (as we see the performers work out their next move). Though, that's my only criticism. I think the use of the camera is pretty brilliant. Did your DP hold the camera?
Yep, one take from the initial engagement to the kill shot. As one of the performers, my apologies for us figuring out our next moves being too apparent. Something I will work on for future projects.
The DP did hold the camera for the entire fight sequence. The kill shot was locked off.
samuelwslater
Thanks for the response. The fact that fight is one-take, apart from the kill, is impressive on a level 99% of the people watching will never understand or appreciate.
GeekFurious
Well, I appreciate that you appreciate it ;-)
Luke Skywalker vs Darth maul awesome
This was cool!! Though no double blade:( Great stuff though:)
hmm almost no cut fight scene, interesting
This thing looked better than last jedi
I didn't know lightsabers produce shadows!
***** Thanks! Glad you liked it.
One thing that I must deem as negative and distracting are the lightning strikes....The thunder growl in the distance would have been fine alone...
Really DAMn good fight, I wanna know why did luke close his lightsaber and reopen it?
Can you provide a timestamp where Luke turned his saber off?
samuelwslater I imagine he's talking about 3:01. There are two answers for that.
It's a tactic called Trakata. One fighter deactivates their saber while clashing with another, letting the opponent stumble forward and get the jump on them. Also, it's cool looking.
I'm hoping for a Darth Maul movie.
nice production but the strikes seemed a bit too gentle and choreographed. Maul's strikes had no force behind them like he wanted to hurt the other guy.
What name of music?
It's an edit of a bunch of different star wars tracks.
This could have been in rebels they missed the chance to make an epic fight..
Play the video at x1.25 speed to make it more exciting, The choreography is a bit on the slow side.
CT choreo is pretty slow by today's standards.
tyr rollins CT choreography?
Tony Ling Classic Trilogy.
Apsis Motion Pictures Ahh, yeah it was. But they masked it with shot changes; the long shot makes it a lot more obvious.
If you watch the interviews, the original intention for the sabers was for them to be more like, slow, powerful, two handed weapons, knights of the round table, and all that.
We would have gotten this if Lucas hadn’t sold Star wars
Great job, but I would think Maul would be one to go more on the offensive than defensive side of the fight.
Glad you liked it.
There were actually a few things that went into the design of the choreography. The first and probably biggest driver in the choreography was the music the director gave us. We had to tailor the fight to fit the score. For me, there were parts (specifically when the trumpets come in) that just made it sound like Luke had to be winning at that point.
The second driver in the choreography was that I've always seen Maul as more of a character that toys with his opponents. Up until the end of the Duel of the Fates fight he's constantly retreating and drawing the jedi to him. I've been told that it's because he's fighting two jedi at once, but even when it is just Maul and Qui Gon he's retreating until they reach that final chamber. I assumed this was because he loved fighting, didn't get to do it much, so he drew the fight out longer than it probably should have been ... which eventually gets him chopped in half. Or maybe I'm just reading into it too much ... it was just a fight in a movie after all.
Thanks again.
Luke tiene barriga?
this is pretty damm cool
Glad you enjoyed it!
Samuel Slater it was awesome! im in a saber club and we are just learning some cool stuff.

uhhhh... why would luke fight with his cloak on ?
before the battle against Jabba in Return of the Jedi
it looks very real
balanced luke is like super saiyan god goku u are not beating him
Excellent choreography, if this wasn't luke skywalker, though I understand why you made it so that Luke struggled a bit.
Glad you liked the choreography.
