I was sittin here thinkin to myself "I haven't seen a teardown vid in ages". Stoked to have been able to find your new channel. Been enjoying your work since the first 4L65E.
Richard, missed seeing your vids for a good while. Glad to find you posting again. I don’t know much about auto trannys but really enjoy watching you work on them and learning so much
richard thanks for all the great videos. Teresa you've become such a great a part of the channel. I've watch hours and hours of your videos and the automatic transmission is still a mystery box to me. but you guys are making it more clear - and your so good at educating. thanks again.
I'm glad to see you two back on you tube.. Missed your educational videos. You are the best in the business. Where is your son ???? Hope all is well.. good deal...
I can't believe I found your new channel. Made my day. Came up in my feed today. I had wondered what happen to you. After watching this video I went back to see what had been going on with this new channel. Can't believe the surgery you had. Didn't even know you had a bad shoulder. Anyways I'm glad to see you both again doing well. I will subscribe today and like this video. I will now have plenty to watch. I haven't watched regular TV for well over 5 years now. I appreciate the educational channels on UA-cam. You have great content & knowledge.
There you are! I been hoping to see you guys again. Hope it all works out good! With your skill, knowledge and talent, there's nothing stopping you guys!
Glad to have you both back. I was concerned when I didn't see any videos for quite some time. I am just stunned by your tranny knowledge, it's amazing. If I were running one of the big three Automakers drive train departments, I would hire you as a consultant!! One of a kind and a racer too!!
It's always to see ya"ll, it's b even too hot for me to be in my shop.. waiting for it to cool down .. ya"ll have a nice week.? P s tell Annie hi for me!!
Richard Hello, GM Powertrain had a manufacturing plant in Fredericksburg, Virginia It was closed about 15 years ago. Maybe they sent all the equipment to Mexico to make torque converters.
So glad I found your new channel! I deleted social media a little over a year ago and started getting better at my hobbies I’ve watched hours and hours of your videos and bought some tech books and have been able to completely rebuild transmissions. I’m forever grateful for you boss man. I’d come be your helper for a week for free just to learn more haha
It’s amazing. how you will take an old Transmission Part and view them as tools, my dad was the same way and I’m kinda like that myself I have used parts and pieces out of old dodge transmissions as tools. I did all the bushings in the front end of my wife Lincoln town car using Parts from Transmissions as sleeves and press accessory’s
found ya again you need to make a video and post on your old channel telling people to come here now.. I thought something happen to ya I was sad not to watch a new video each week or so not sure Y but just enjoyed watching them lol. but good to see ya's alive and well. thanks for sharing
A great informative video, Richard. I have a 2012 GMC 1500 Sierra 5.3L/6L80e drive train with 200K miles, it is all original and running fine. The last trans oil/filter change showed a fine film on the pan magnet. Wish we lived closer.
They actually have us put grease on the splines of output shaft. GM part #9985830. I still use part #1051344, which is GM wheel bearing grease that GM was having us use back in the early 6L80 days on the Cadillac CTS 6L50 where the splines between the trans output shaft and the transfer case would strip out.
Iv got a 14 silverado 3/4 ton work truck with 245,000 miles tow 10 k lbs daily (bobcat+trailer) fluid looks like dark roast coffee and it refuses to give up 💯. Love the videos folks keep em coming
Mine shelled out around 180000 miles. I dont tow with it often but when i do it is a 1000 mile road trip. It cost me 6200 bucks for a limited lifetime warranty. Supposeddly built with the latest and greatest stuff. They did put in a cooler bypass kit that keeps the oil 50 degress cooler than it used to run.
Awesome video. 6L80 owner myself, and while I’ve done all Maintainence (upgraded thermal bypass, fluid + filter change), I still wasn’t super clear on the mechanics behind the transmission itself. This is exactly what I needed - thank you!
I guess I need to start buying me some part piece by piece before the day comes and I experience a failure I have a 2015 HD 2500 Silverado 6L90 that I purchased used I believe I’m at 107,114 miles and right now it seems to be operating flawlessly but I know absolutely zero history on maintenance or service just a few days ago I checked the fluid and it is beautiful. It is a rich red translucent color.
I did a bypass in mine. In something like 2018 they changed the spring in them so it opens at 156 instead of 195. I recommend to people to either get that thermostat or the kit you are putting in the cooler lines block.
Pretty sure that's what killed mine in my 2014. Started the shudder just after 250,000 miles. Always thought the trans temp seemed high. Wish I would have known!
@billthepainter5106 your milage was pretty good for them. Mine burnt up the torque converter at 130,000 and was replaced. That converter failed in less than 40,000. That's when I rebuilt mine. I still have the cooler kit that Richard is using and the updated thermostat. Mine typically runs 100 to 110 degrees above the outside temperature when its cold out and about 50 to 60 when it's hot out when not towing.
Looks as if that model GMC could use an additional transmission cooler in front of the radiator ! Also, you would really have to wonder if the pump and stator were replaced in the first rebuild. It's interesting to note that most of this "wear" came from the torque converter vs. the frictions. This is exactly why Sonnax and TransGo parts are a required option with every trans rebuild.
It doesn't work if it has the stock 195 thermostat in it. You don't get any cooler flow till it opens. GM did update the thermostat to a 156 that helps cooling. Using the kit so there is no thermostat is the best bet for keeping them cool. The factory cooler works well. Mine only runs around 140 to 150 in the summer without the thermostat for the cooler lines.
The stock tranny cooker is set for 186 degrees. The updated GM ones are set to 170 now. I just assume delete it and have full time flow. Just finished changing another 6L80E today
I have 192,789 miles on one of my trucks, it has the 4L60 drive train…but it’s on its way out the door. I just changed the transmission oil 15k miles ago and it’s really dark, so it’s cooking every time I drive. My mechanic told me he refused to do anything with it, so I’m still figuring out my next move. It’s an old truck, so I’m not that broken up about it.
I was wondering where y'all went to. I have a '15 with a 6L80 in it, and have been looking for just this very video. I want to get that cooler bypass kit.
Leave it gear. Imagine the added wear you're introducing on everything that engages and disengages the forward clutch (1st gear) by constantly going from D to N at every stop light and traffic jam.
Doubt I will ever own a pickup past GMT800 but was curious about the oem parts in the 6Lx0 that need upgrading and Richard doesn't disappoint. Any of you regulars remember a comment Richard made quite a while back on a 4L60/80 about "That's the reason I don't like to rebuild carry-in transmissions" as some linkage or something that the owner installed wrong and killed a newly rebuilt transmission after a few miles? Too many of his vids in my history to go thru them all.
I hear you say that heat kills transmissions. I have a LS swapped Jeep truck with a 6.0L and 4L80E. I'm cooling the transmission fluid with a electric fan remote cooler. My cooler mounted sensor measures 150 degrees trans fluid temp when the fan is always on. Should I install a 180 degree thermostat or run the fan always on and keep the trans fluid at 150? Does the 4L80E need a certain temperature to fun most efficiently?
I have a 2022 F450 with the newest 10 speed. This damn thing loves to downshift 2 or 3 gears and over rev my engine up to 3500 rpm’s when I’m towing down high and touch the brakes. What would you suggest as a solution to this. I would like it to stay in the gear I have selected instead of it downshifting on it own. Also I tow between 30-40 k lbs with this truck everyday and put 120- 150 k miles a year on it. What can I do to increase the transmissions life
I've been watching for new videos on your other channel, haven't seen any in so long. Google about your company and seen you now have a new channel, definitely hit that subscribe button so i can catch up. BTW, i need to look into my 93 4l60e and see why my reverse is slow engaging, all forward gears are fine, but reverse is slow, i have to bump the throttle a little bit to get it to drop in. Any advise of what to look for. Thanks, and can't wait to watch all your current videos.
Man this model always has problem rarely make 100k miles even when upgraded they don't seem to last. I rather go 480le swap at least get a few more miles for the price. the 6l80 seems like a money pit unfortunately 🛠️💯👍✌️ love your videos watch quite a few
Richard, I have an e4od that came out of a van that has a 5.8L gas v8 that needs rebuilt. Im going to put it in my other van that has a 7.3L diesel. Can you build the transmission to go in to my diesel van?
I have a 2008 Escalade with the 6L80 trans. It has 150,000 miles on the original trans. No issues at all. I will be doing an engine swap soon. My question: Should I replace the torque converter while I have the engine out? Should I buy a torque converter with a billet cover? What is the brand converter you recommend? I want to avoid catastrophic failure down the road if possible.
This trans has been serviced many times during its life. I don't want to wait for the converter to fail for fear it will tear up other parts (like the pump). What brand of converter do you use?@@richardteresacricheducatio3542
On the 6L80s, do you guys recommend a flush or a pan drop and fluid/filter change? 2015 Silverado at 117k. Already been flushed twice but no filter change. I’m just trying to squeeze every mile I can out of it. Thank you for the videos.
@@richardteresacricheducatio3542I’ve had the bypass cooler kit on for awhile now. Temps stay between 160-185 deg. I will plan on doing a pan drop and filter change. Thank you!

As close as you can get to built , USA is more likely assembled in the USA and that might be a huge stretch.
Planned obsolescence GM should have a class action lawsuit on all these transmissions. 6L80 and 90
I'm glad I found this I use to watch the pres Trans channel
