Collectively if I told you that in the past 10 years between the office and scrubs I have spent ten thousand hours watching laughing and crying with these shows I would barely be exaggerating. So this is in no way criticism but a love letter to the show and it took everything in me to not make this an extended 40 minute analysis full of the great comedy, storylines, and characters that unfolded over 10 years on television.
I always identified with John Krisinskis character Jim Halpert as the tall, slender, fun loving hopeless romantic office professional just trying to win the girl and make a living
Not only from a character standpoint but in his style evolution- he and I both went from a bushy haired baggy shirt wearing man boy into slightly less boy looking tailored shirt wearing modern gent.
Every year or two my wife and I re-watch the whole series from beginning to end and this year I was particularly struck with Jim’s transformation in style throughout the show. I think you too can make this evolution as Jim did- Gradually and confidently. I want to start with a Kudos to series costume designers
* Carey Bennett 05-08 (season 1-4)
* Alysia Raycraft 08-13 (season 5-9)
- the show is a mockumentary style and it was so grounded and perfectly captured what Stanley refers to in Season 9 as Pennsylvania business I’d just call it middle America city office professional.
Let’s take a closer look at Jim and his evolution of style starting with season 1. We’ll talk about Jim’s choice in color pallets, hairstyles, clothing fit, and of course his watch. No one can blame Jim Halpert for the late 90s and early 2000s but by the end of the show Jim rocks the modern business casual in a way that season one Jim would barely recognize.
From the moment we meet Jim Halpert in the first episode of the office he’s always a very carefree, informal, nice guy and extremely relatable as he cares enough about his job to keep it but not enough to pour his heart into it.
His clothing and appearance reflect that. His hair is always perfectly disheveled and appears to pay no particular attention to what he is wearing each day as long as it’s a shirt and tie. As you would expect with office attire Jim wears a lot of blues, whites, and some creams but the shirts are always way too big. You can see in almost every shot his shirt is just hanging off of him, the shoulders do not line up well, he has extreme muffin top, and it’s rare to see Jim with his sleeves not rolled up but chances are they’re too long for his arms. We also get a few glimpses into probably the biggest mistake he could make which is to improperly match his shoes and belt not to mention the shoes themselves
His style remains largely the same through season 1 and 2. We do get a few glimpses at “casual Jim” which he makes similar style gaffs in his v-neck sweaters showing his undershirt and who can blame him for the AndOne era of basketball style with big baggy shorts.
At the end of season 2 Jim takes his big leap with Pam and comes up short landing him in Stamford CT with a new promotion and a slightly upgraded style to match.
From “I’ll have her home by 8” to “your daughter calls me daddy too”
nah reverse that
@@freepcrkit5970 So... "I won't have him home by 8" to "my son calls me mommy too"?
@@tlf361 nah reverse that
babysitters lmao
Naw L8r season Jim is way too committed
Thanks to the office, people now know Scranton exists. When people ask where I'm from I just say "an hour north of Scranton." lol
Will you be going to see the new backyard train??
Hahahaha I hope so
I live in PA, but I still had no idea that Scranton exists until the Office. 😅😂
Ask any real penguins fan.
A lot of the players were called up from Wilkes Barre Scranton.
Desmith (backup goalie) actually has the office on his mask.
I noticed it a couple weeks ago when he filled in for Matt Murray.
A lot of the really good players came from Scranton.
The leading goal scorer for last seasons cup run was Jake geuntzel, he got called up last season and he stayed in the nhl because of how amazing he is.
Scranton penguins fuckin kill it. Amazing semi pro team.
Fu q The penguins? Are you talking about hockey or something?
The hidden message is that Jim and Dwight are really best friends. They continue with the pranks... to make the day go by faster.
True!
Never even considered this.
Their relationship is similar to Batman and joker
MR.X yea Jim is a great Batman.
@@bubbles7608 I think it's the other way around: Dwight = Batman. Jim = Joker.
Love how you put Asian Jim
Love that you noticed. Thank you Oscar!
I don't know what you're talking about. Jim was always Asian.
What about the transformation of Kevin's character as a whole
Spider Jay From Kevin to Ashton Kootcher
I hated what they did with Kevin in the last two seasons, he basically became a walking punchline for stupid/fat jokes.
@@type-writerproductions1116 Kevin of Seasons 3-6 is best Kevin.
"If John Mellencamp ever wins an Oscar - I am going to be a very rich dude."
"Every year or so", im up to watching it twice a month
+Stephen M the whole series??
The Kavalier yes... :)
Me too
I’ve seen it 6 times since July
I can watch the whole season twice in one month
John Krasinsky went places. From Jim Halpert, Badass Jack Silva from 13 Hours to Jack Ryan. What a guy.
Patrick Todd and now lee in a quiet place
Cole Murdoch that movie was incredible.
Dude needs more roles. Amazing actor
"I can't go to Yemen, I'm an analyst!" "gEt On tHe PlAnE"
A Quiet Place
While I respect this video and the work of The Kavalier, no video on The Office and style is complete unless you discuss the fashion icon known as the Nard Dog.
Good point. Should be a whole video on his Connecticut casual style. On my short list now.
I can't believe The Kavalier replied to my comment! I am such a fanboy. We have exactly the same tastes and interests and I also travel frequently for work, so your channel has been a revelation since I discovered it.
Whenever I am thinking about purchasing a product I look to see if you have reviewed it first. I purchased Away luggage on your recommendation (with your discount code of course) and also Airpods.
A few things I love that maybe you would want to review.
1. My Men's Birchbox subscription.
2. Shinola watches and leather products. I own about a half dozen of their products between watches and leather goods (wallet/journal covers).
3. Le Labo cologne. I have never heard you mention wearing cologne (I do not watch your clothes reviews simply because I am a portly fellow and most trendy companies don't sell their clothes in my size). However, I am a cologne and watch enthusiast and I believe Le Labo is the best niche house in the business today.
4. My Amex platinum credit card. I realize this may be somewhat out of your usual range of reviews, but as a frequent flyer I have loved their rewards and found the card to be more than worth the annual subscription cost. Also, their customer service is tremendous. I had a Chase Sapphire card, which is a competitor of theirs, but found their customer service very lacking for a premium credit card. I figure all things premium and travel would interest you and your audience.
5. Anthony Logistics men's grooming products. I love having unity in my grooming products and I have found this to be the best line of grooming products for the price narrowly beating out Jack Black and Baxter. Their Algae facial cleanser, facial scrub and pre-shave oil are all the best in their categories in my opinion.
Again, thanks for replying and love what you are producing.
1. Yes I am not sure why I haven't done them yet.
2. same as #1
3. Cologne space is one I have not gotten into but would like to give it the right attention once I nail my watch obsession
4. I use the Delta platinum card. Wouldn't use anything else after this.
5. First I have heard of them but sounds like I need to take a look. Going to add them to the brand tracker.
Nard dog style analysis has been swirling in my head since you mentioned it. Won't be the next one I do but is definitely on the short list.
Thank you for watching!!
No one can wear sweater vests like andy
Ed Helm looked soooooo good when he changed his wardrobe after becoming district manager. Like when David Wallace made him manager again and he took off that dusty custodian uniform :)
So if you think about it, he started dressing better once he started dating Pam
Karen actually
The Real Dirty Dan well, Karen forced him to start dressing better, then he reverted, and he started intentionally dressing better for Pam
I also like the fact that after Pam breaks up with Roy but especially once she starts dating Jim, it seems like she starts doing her hair and makeup more, giving her an all-around brighter look.
@@sumowrestler2687
I think Pam was also brighter because she actually happy in a relationship instead of just content.
Dalton Austin no, the directors actually told jenna fisher to look more “ordinary” in the first seasons, and they probably decided to make her more put together to fit the story line.
Can we talk about how Kevin was using the wrong hand at 0:23
Though Jim looked completely messy in the earlier seasons, but he looked the cutest then! I really missed that carefree Jim in the later seasons 😔
there should be a pam version!
she gets chubby
Wairagu Kariba cause of pregnancy. At the very end she was back to normal and imo better than ever.
You put the good old goodbye between Michael and Jim and fam I'm crying, that shit gets me everytime
did anyone else start crying during the goodbye michael episode
Danielle Columbia that and the last episode I cried to be fair I was really fuckin drunk
Every single person that works on the office are pure geniuses. The actors, the writers, the costume designers, the camera crew. Everybody.
higher.consciousness who is the camera crew though the real camera crew or the real real camera crew
Glenn S yes
Makes me want to go back and rewatch the whole series. Well done! Wallace and Miner always looked sharp too.
I hope Netflix sees a small spike in plays of the pilot this weekend ;-)
One of my favourite Jim costume moments is when he goes from co-manager back to being a salesman and immediately takes off his suit jacket and begins rolling up his sleeves. And then of course Dwight starts gloating so Jim sticks his tie in his coffee 😂
Jimmy's final form : CIA special duty security guard.
*wipes tears away*
Nice
He didn’t really change his style, more so he started working out and wearing tighter shirts lol
I absolutely loved this video. Thank you for making it !
He gets a promotion to Co-manager, big difference.
During season 3, John Krasinski was also shooting the movie Leatherheads, a 2008 film about a football team in the 1920's. He had to shave his head for that role in the movie. This look of a shaved head is something that Jim (John) would apparently never do, so he wore a wig throughout the rest of the season 3 of the Office.
This explains why he had such messy hair!
When you cry so much from one SHOW then you ever cried in your whole life
I've decided to cosplay as Jim when I meet Rainn Wilson in May, so this my good sir has been the best video I'll need to use to nail the look I want!!! THANK YOU!!!!
How did it go?
This was so well made and had a lot of heart put into it. Great work
Shout out to Andy Bernard, who always had a unique style!
We're re-watching the Office (again) and I've made sure to pay close attention to everyone's style this time. This has got to be my favorite video of yours...I know it's 2 years old, but I'd love to see more like this!
Thanking you so much for covering this. It was very much something I was just thinking about!
Amazing video! Such a great show. We lived in Scranton for 5 years and The Office did a great job of capturing real life in Scranton
Love these video essays featuring style transformations. Huge fan of The Office! And I'll admit to having a big time bro crush on Jim. Great video! Thanks!
+mike acord thank you Mike!
I missed this one, what a nice video, pretty moving. I rewatched the show end of last year, it was even better than the first time.
Oh, you literally meant his style.. lol. Was not expecting that (this video was in my recommended). Cool video though. Not a style expert by any stretch of the imagination, I just know I used to hate Jim’s hair until he cut it. It’s interesting to now see why
@@mickroyster6442 hey man. you rock what you like. its all down to everyones preference. i constantly have short and long hair off and on, and as mine is getting around jims length, i realize why not, its better to have a little personality in your style then just have some boring modern cut like everyone. enjoy it bro
Great video. Like you said, Jim is very relatable, so this was actually helpful in thinking about my wardrobe.
This is a great video!! I'd love to see more media style analysis
I liked this video even though I don't watch the Office. I really enjoy your calm and articulate style. I learned a lot from your various videos. Keep it up!
really loved this video essay especially because a lot of my style inspirations have come from TV and film too, great work!
Thank you! Planning to look at a few other shows/characters that I love. Any suggestions? Right now my short list is Ray Donovan, Suits, watches on House of Cards, and Raylan Givens from Justified (as suggested below)
Mike and Harvey from Suits would be awesome!
This is amazing! These are great insights into how foreshadowing works on this show and men's fashion.
I look forward to seeing some of these videos more!
Wow, great video...im impressed. Great presentation, editing, and layout. Keep it up!
This is exceptional content! Liked it.
I finally sat down and watched the show from start to finale. :) great show, and excellent video!
Hands down the funniest show ever made. God damn I love it so much.
Jim's fashion sense in the beginning reminds me a lot of my boyfriend. There's a lot of not trying things on whether you're lazy or because your mom decided to buy you some shirts because you don't go shopping often. But when you're not an average height, it's doubly important to try things on. A lot of tall guys I know, my boyfriend included, think that fit means it covers your limbs. And a lot of guys I know in general think that they're a size bigger than they actually are. After four years, I'm still going shopping with my boyfriend and telling him where the shoulders should line up and how long his pants should be and what fixes he can make. If he wasn't dating a seamstress like me, he'd be screwed haha.
That's what I try to cover on my channel, as a 6'4 170lb slim guy I know the pain of buying in stores. Maybe he'd like some tall guy style tips ;-)
Of course you date someone tall
What a great video!! Wonderful analysis
man sometimes i wish i could just erase this show from my memory so that i can experience this moment again:
"huh, the office? Ah i guess ill give it a try."
Hey man great video, really good analysis and thanks for making. I was wondering if you were a fan of Community at all because I would love to see an similar video on the style of Jeff Winger. Keep up the good work!
Personal favorite comedies:
1. Scrubs
2. The Office
3. Parks and Rec
4. Community
Great idea. Has been a couple years since rewatching community. No promises on timing but putting in my queue
Awesome. Love all your vids, so well thought out and prepared, and this vid was no exception! :-)
Nicely done.
Loved this video
The last episode gives me chills everytime
I love the office and this video was fun, but to be honest I like how happy you looked making this video, so go ahead and make more. Do what makes you happy and show that, people get attracted to passion.
Thank you Sebastian!
Thank god UA-cam recommended me this video. Jim is always a fav 💙
I never thought a ten minute video on types of ties could be this interesting lol
Great video and neat to see his evaluation. ^_^
I worked with John on Jack Ryan 6 months ago in Columbia, at that time I hadnt seen an episode of the office, so didnt really get how big a deal he was. Since then Ive watched all 9seasons twice! And if I saw him again tomorrow Id probably act like a proper fan boy 😂😂😂
Great idea for a video, I really enjoyed it! Thanks
+Lamarr Ingram thank you Lamarr!
I love this show so much
oh, this channel is my entire wheelhouse!
Unreal video man
dude this is an awesome video.
So I like that you were able to get all the clothes, but more relating how the clothes reflect how mental state and evolution as a character through the show would have helped. Good work
I cried at the end
First time watching this guy, and his level of intricate knowledge of the office is unlike anything i have ever seen.
Office Trivia champion
I love his style and the last seasons.I admire his hair too...and his personality.I feel like the characters personality is half respect and half humor which i love.We have almost the same style but he is definetly an upgrade which i want to have.
Nice vid! This is pretty original
Couldn't find anything like it on UA-cam. I've always tried to make the videos I would want to watch! Thank you Jason
I adore this show ❤❤❤
Well done a good node to such a wonderful show!
Wowee. Great job.
Amazing
Boi. Ive watched every episode of the office like 20 times strong! Everyday i watch an episode:). The office...For life
I didnt understand one word you said but I loved it.
Insightful way into a character, and a show.
i want that 40 minute videeeoooo pleeeaaaseee
Why would you show me that part with Jim and Michael again. Now i'm sad.
Gets me every time
Love Jim’s hair in the first season he was so cute✨
Pretty great video
While I'm a chick and I'm not in need of men's fashion, I AM a massive Scrubs and The Office fan, and I have a not too small crush on John Krasinski, and will watch anything with him in it. 😂😂 seriously though, I love learning about new things, and you are so articulate and intelligent, I can't help but enjoy hearing you speak. Great stuff!
Thank you Jenna!
At least, he wore the pumps with his tuxedo. Jim should've worn loafers and yes, I did pay attention to what shoes he had on.
+Dean Christensen yes and he looked dynamite!!
The Kavalier, now I'm waiting for you to follow suit and see you evolve your footwear from oxfords to executive loafers and tuxedo pumps.
"Every year my wife and I watch the show from start to finish"
Those are rookie numbers bud. Try rewatching it every week on repeat since last year
Stanley actually said that in season eight
Now this is what you call a fan
Fantastic video! I too watch and rewatch The Office everyday! I also troll UA-cam for different videos and channels such as yours. Thank you!
Young Dwight and Jim picture had me crying 😂😂😂
Great video, Jon. I think one of the things that makes Jim so likeable in this series is that he dresses like 95% of the guys that I work with. Not too great, and not too terrible. Great perspective in this video. ( Looks like we also found your man crush with Danny...a character that I barely even remember)
How do you feel about the repeated instances of white undershirts under v-neck sweaters?
Video was very good
Still love this video
Thank you Kevin!
When Steve cries, we all cry
Officially my all time favorite UA-cam channel, I love the office 😃 few moths ago while watching the office I noticed Jim's style change too. But this video showed his entire style transformation.
wondering if Dwight's style changed too 😂
Well.... going to head over on Netflix and watch the office again 😄
Dwight did not. Although his personality softened over time. 10/10 show for sure.
Dude the ad that played before this video was freaking Jack Ryan lmaooo
He went from going on the yacht to *owning* the yacht
Sir it’s Slob to CLASSY
You really know your shirts.
I've never seen Steve Carrel cry but now that I have I'm crying a bit too.
The wig was my favorite look of his lol
Jim's hair looked its best when Karen got it cut for him. Dapper as heck. He slowly grew in to the longer, disheveled hair for a while after that.
3:59 where is that from?
01:42 isn’t from s9 but from the s8 episode “garden party”
i don’t know how to feel that jim wore a wig in season 3
