Someone said this about the MCU and I think it applies here. All series have a choice: to go out in a bang or continue on with a whimper and eventually just fade away. I don't think AC is past tye point of going out with a bang, especially since it continues to be immensely popular, but I do see AC fading away if they don't course correct and start telling overarching narratives again. Which they should be doing now with Basim but I'm scared that Basim just... won't appear again in the games and have his story conclude in the comics
An example of a series choosing to go out with a bang is Uncharted. I have mad respect for Naughty Dog for not continuing that series, as much as I would love a new game.

The fact that the franchise has shifted to the point where the core themes and conflicts have completely changed. It's no longer about Desmond uncovering the mystery of the Isu era. It's not about the Templar conflict. Each new release is a stand alone project flexing the beauty of the historical setting. I can see Isu as a fiction addition, but I can never digest all the Minotaurs and other mythical elements woven into the story. Never worked for me.

To be completely honest, as a long time fan and frequent player of the series, i lost the plot a long time ago. I have no idea what the overarching story is trying to do with pretty much any game past revelations.
But those with more patience than me deserve a satisfying end to everything they've created so far and i would love to see them continue with more stand-alone assassin stories.

I think in a way you can incorporate both of your ending ideas. Having the templars win would not only be heartbreaking to see from the assassins standpoint, but it would also make sense. With how outnumbered the templars are, they should've been able to win ages ago. So when the templars win, we fast forward to the future where we will take control of an abstergo employee. Near the end of that mission you can reveal that there are people who are slowly forming a rebellion. This can be done to show that there will always be the conflict, even when the battle seems lost, the scales will always end up balanced. There will always be people who want to fight for freedom, and will fight control. You can even have the abstergo employee be an undercover assassin as well.

I don't think the franchise needs to end so long as every game is made with narrative intent. History and Order vs Freedom are tools you can use to make infinite stories, and I'd be happy to get new AC games forever. All I ask is that the games serve a purpose to the overall franchise.
However, I do think the modern day needs a conclusion, because it's technically the main story, which needs a clear beginning and end.
Since AC4, the modern day has only existed because it needed to. While Valhalla did finally do something relevant with it, that doesn't change the fact that overall, the modern day is an irrelevant mess. There are just too many teams of writers working on a single story across all the games. "Too many chefs spoil the broth" if you will.
Looking to the near future, the Infinity Hub being our own Animus is Ubisoft quietly concluding the modern day. It's lazy, but safe. And I'm cool with that honestly.
I'd rather they silently kill this dead horse than have a single team of writers try to conclude the collective work of thousands of writers over 15+ years.

The thing is I agree that narratives NEED an ending, but with AC in particular its literally the only consistent and reliable franchise that Ubisoft has outside of maybe Far Cry (which in itself is falling apart and not selling as well) and maybe Just Dance (isn't as sustainable as it is only available on Switch and not as popular as the Kinect Era). The games still sell well and still are massive profit incentives for Ubisoft and if it wasn't for AC, Ubisoft may have very well sold themselves to Tencent or another major company.
The games will most likely expand well into the next couple of decades, maybe as far as the next 3-5 console generations, covering settings that are still heavily requested (India, Spain, Aztecs, China, Mongols, Russia, Persia, Rome etc) before people are finally burnt out. The games still sell incredibly well, even better than previous instalments in fact because it draws international audiences by exploring history, but once interesting world history runs out, I think it may be time for AC to end as well.

Or it sells so incredibly poorly that they have to reboot/re-innovate. I mean, let’s say we have another Unity on our hands and every makes as much noise as they did back then, perhaps they would jump ship and make AC a battle royal game?

Hard disagree with the idea that the ending should be "tipping the scales".
To me, the ideal ending would be the complete destruction of both orders, by the hands of an assassin with the support of a templar. With the main characters having the realization that order and chaos will always exist, but the organized cults controlling the world and representing these forces being in constant war is just a detriment for the world and it's people.

I also always thought that, at least after AC 3, the franchise would be simply better if they just abandoned the current day plotline and just focused on seperate yet loosely connected stories on different historical periods. It's really hard to care about the current day plot after Desmond dies.

When AC ends, it needs to end literally in modern day. I want the final final chapter of AC to let you play as Assassin's using advanced and modern technology, using the world we currently live in as the playspace. Parkour in the real world, blending in with the hustle and bustle of our cities. It would be awesome to just finally see how the brotherhoods of today operate. I've seen too much of how abstergo functions in our world. I want the Assassins to be more than just cameos in Abstergo backdrops and documents.
P.S this would also need to be completely overhauled. New engine, completely new gameplay style to fit the modern day theme. A passion project made the right team. I understand the stars would have to basically align so impossibly perfect for Ubisoft to do this but what's the point in having reasonable dreams?

They needed to focus on the story we all cared about. Desmond was the character we all rooted for. In the game up until 3 we all expect at some point to take over Desmond and become and assassin. And we get small sections of that in 3 but I was expecting a full on game. We wanted to see what would happen to Shaun, Rebecca and Desmond’s dad. They got too lost in the past assassins. We needed an actual protagonist, not a new face every game with no real modern day to bridge it all together. I haven’t played after odyssey but i would hope to get back into it soon

*Historian here* I played AC II when I was 10 and it forever changed me. It is one of the main reasons behind my choice to become a historian and a history teacher. While I agree that, from a story building and gaming perspective, the franchise should end. But I deeply believe in the potencial of AC as a history educational game. I find it quite a shame that they nowadays use historians so much for the world building, but not so much for the stories and scripts. The beauty of history is there are always new sources being discovered and new perspectives to consider. We could have multiple different ACs just in the French Revolution, for example, just by considering this perspective. In an ideal world, AC could be the perfect tool for Public History and the sharing of historical knowledge. It breaks my heart a bit whenever this potential isn't explored lore-wise (like in Unity and Syndicate)

finally subbed, twanted to briefly (or not) share my thoughts:
i think the first and thrid question go hand in hand and those combined then together with the second. should it end and when will it end will define how. I fully agree that the only "clear cut" answer is to the last question, when it will end: when it does not make money. As much as this is my favorite Universe and i enjoy all types of media, it is business driven in many aspects, each worth its own discussion. So with "when" having an answer "not for the foreseeable future" would come the question: should it? And i agree partially as well with you: yes, especially from the modern world perspective. But, and here is where i would disagree and pull in the "how": It is not really difficult to acchieve both and continue at the same time:
Have the current storyline culminate as you rightfully said in a climactic win for the templars. As the conflict lies in the shadows the immediate outcomes would not be felt by the world with urgency but rather over time. This would end the modern day as we know it and allow for a very simple and believable in-universe explanation why it just picks up the next game after the climactic end 100 or whatever years later. And from then, especially with the whole infinity thing in mind it basically reboots itself tbh, a hub where "like minded individuals gather to see the truth behind absertgos lies" or whtevs, guided by messages left behind "in the dark" by rebecca, shawn and william and to unlock, understand, find item x the players/initiates need to relive all sorts of memories by ancestors, which where all stored and setup and hidden by the OG modern Day Assassins to be used one day by the right people and so on and so forth.... So it should end, at least most of the current story threads and developments. And this may even happen rather soon, but in a way that allows to launch the next chapter.
Bonus: If there ever will be a final AC Game, the one to solve the last pieces to the puzzle, i would bet my money on ancient rome during Marc Aurels reign 161 - 180. The adoptive emperors period is kind of "the peak" because the succession was by qualification not heritage. The one to break it was probably the wisest of them all. This tragedy of making a fatal decision despite knowing better or simplyfailing at the most important task, this whole scenario just seems so griping for a final game, with Rome at its height, the personal drama of succession and mix in a almost "classic" Assassin - Order Story with great characters... that is how i would end it. Plus, its ancient rome, and although dream scenarios are either being made or have been made (egypt/greece, french revolution, victorian london, japan, meso america rumored heavily) and we saw a glimpse in Origins (including the second pivotal moment in roman history, the obvious and more famous one) but we want ancient Rome in all its glory. With all the vaults, all the ancients wonders, all of it.

In my opinion, the Assassin's Creed series peaked with AC: Revelations, and I've considered each game since then as a standalone experience that I've enjoyed playing. However, I have a concern with the developers listening too much to players feedback. While I understand the value of engaging with the community, it feels like they are bending over backward to please players, which has led to a loss of originality and unpredictability in the games. Additionally, Ubisoft's tendency to leak information doesn't help. I wish developers would focus more on their own creative vision rather than frequently reacting to fan demands regardless how much paradoxical this might sound.

I feel like it can go for a while longer. I think the ending couldn't be one faction winning, but probably either the templars and assassins coming to a truce, or both parties being destroyed somehow. maybe we can finally get a game set only in the modern day with tiny chunks of different eras throughout, essentially swap it so the past sections are as common as modern-day sections in the ezio trilogy.
I disagree that the modern day conflict should end, I think it should flourish, because there's no way to end a story with stories that have already happened, in the past.

The thing with the bad guys winning, I totally understand because so many times the bad guys have good points, like the assassins think freedom is peace while it only brings chaos and the templars know that control brings order, but it could also bring rebellion which leads back into chaos just with extra steps, so no one is really right but i personally support the templars point more just not the lengths they go to to achieve it, in the sense of killing innocents and such.
And also if the bad guys win, it always leaves open the possibility for the good guys to make a merciless comeback which then would be justified

I would love to everything come close to a loop.
Basically there is a world where templars won and they have complete control over Earth.
Some years go by and there is a cliffhanger. There is a brach in the wall... There is some other Eve and Adam who stole something / broke something / escaped from something - because they wanted freedom and thus the loop begins a new.
I feel like asassins winning would be childish, as I thing generally about constant chaos / revolution. It is a fine thought, but unachievable because that's utopia. There needs to be some control but some freedom too. So I present the loop ending, because that balance of constant struggle between these two philosophies.

That's why I love fromsoftware they had the balls to end Dark Souls and make new ips in different universes. I think just like you said. AC should end the modern day. They could keep making games in new historical settings or just make a new IP based on historical settings and/or myths without any ties with ac lore like immortals fenyx rising.

The thing that has bugged me since 3 is the modern day storytelling.
With Desmond we had a story that led up to that finale where all the pieces fit together.
Nowadays it feels kinda aimless, like the first person player in Black Flag, what happened to them? What happened to Juno (I’ve only played the games 😅) and Layla’s story did a weird 180 turn in Valhalla.
It just feels unfocused to me

Without character like Desmond in the present timeline, I really think Assassin's Creed without any present day story is better now. As Ubisoft kept on being confused on what to do with that arc, they better just leave it and abandon it.
Make the series now just about historical narrative about freedom vs control in whatever form it is, whether before Assassin and Templar are already founded as organizations or before.
So the series can be like Final Fantasy, with each entry being different story and characters without the burden of present day timeline

    y essentially what you said.
The present story, at least for what regards the earth destruction plot, must end, but since ubisoft wants to milk and can do it due to the historical settings, i'd be ok with games focusing only on that as long as they're of quality.
Some new series titled 'Animus Experiences', examinations abstergo did on other employees to find artifacts or other stuff, that's cool. Probably even removing the reliving ancestors' lives and just giving the story of assassins of the past might work on most average fans, but obviously would leave bitterness in many close fans fascinated by the animus concept and the whole relationship between past and present, thanks to which we fell in love with the saga.
I'm also attracted to bad/gray endings, even slightly open ones, but i prefere those that taste of melancholy or dystopia rather than '''evil''' fully winning.
Following the old plot end where desmond and lucy (or new people now) become the adam & eve of a new world would be amazing.
Or if the earth were to be saved, a world where templars end up gaining supremacy and building a wolfenstein-esque society would be great for the series if executed well and with care. It would make even futuristic AC, or hacking like in WD, etc. possible without making them what if scenarios

  • @anthonysmurthwaite6258

The modern day story that exists now should definitely end, it seems like Ubisoft are afraid to end it because they aren't sure how to carry on without the usually relatively loose thread between the games that modern day brings, but with the existence of the animus there are infinite possibilities for new stories in the modern day.
You could remove the Assassin's and Templar conflict from the modern day story entirely and make a completely new modern story involving the animus, they could even have the new modern day story set in the future long after the Assassin's vs Templar war, but my wish would be that the history of the conflict repeats itself at the end of the current modern day story, where the Assassin's or Templars win but just like what happened so many times within the AC lore on a small scale, the losing side of the war could be reborn with those inspired by the ideals that resonate with those characters, or that were related to characters who died, or were forced into conflict with the winning side, but instead of a sub sect of the Assassin's that were destroyed being reborn like in AC 3 with the group of Assassins destroyed by Haytham and Shay being reborn through Achilles and Conor, the losing side would need to be reborn entirely, because the losing side was completely wiped out, an interesting way they could bring back the side that loses is by having a huge conflict within the winning side, because if either side win then the issues that each side has would inevitably get completely out of control without the other side to keep them on their feet, could even be an interesting way to comment on the way real life companies without competition become complacent and in one way or another are made worse by the lack of a significant rival company, but for the Assassin's and Templars the societal balence of the entire world would suffer if either side gets complacent with no rival, either leading to a worldwide lawless frontier of crime if the Assassin's win, or a lifeless, loveless skeleton of a society where the demand of absolute control strips away the appreciation of beauty and art because the people are groomed to believe that there is nothing more important than strictly controlled continuation with nothing that may distract from the control and servitude being important if Templars win.
These potential scenarios of society probably shouldn't happen fully, but instead be avoided by the rebirth of the side that lost who see where society will lead because of the one sided decay of freedom or control

I'm interested what you mean you left AC with Odyssey but returned with Valhalla bc they are literally next to each other.
Ngl, I awaited this topic, I knew it was bound to happen some day.
Great video, with that topic you brought up that it can easily happen that I'm like a retired old man and the games are still going to come out is a f'd up thing. And I really don't want it to happen.
As I believe I already mentioned to u that my little faith that's left after Mirage (not bc it was that good but bc I see that there are devs that work at Ubi that still kind of understand what AC is but were just restricted) is going into Hexe.
Red is gonna have a similar effect as Valhalla on the industry and the franchise I think. Going to be advertised (kinda already is) with being an ultimate fantasy, many ppl buy it (I'm pretty sure I won't just because), it sort of having an ok start just as Valhalla had, then being ruined with the post content quality and patches making the game actively/objectively worse, WHILE making so much money.
And this last thing I really hope won't happen. I actively want Red to fail so they can see that what they're doing is not good.
After all of this, in theory Hexe is coming out, Darby's writing it so it very well could be a great single-game narrative but hopefully also putting an end to what happened at the end of Valhalla. And creating a resolution just as you said in the video.
Every time Darby touched a game: Rev, BF, Val, I felt like, really deep, under the surface, it did understand what AC is.

i personally think that ac should end as it does not resemble it self at all. the tone, gameplay, story, world and even the artstyle is unrecognisable from what ac was. i think that the newer games have almost an unlimited potential as actionadventure fantasy games and at this point its obvious that it is the type of game they want to make. the new ac games feels like theyre held back by the ip and the need to tie it in to the ac lore especially since they bend the rules of said lore to fit the new gameplay and storys that theyre writing. it would be great if we got to se the full potential of the fantasyworld, lore and gameplay of oddysey and vallhalla as historicly based fantasyrpgs. this would make these newer games actual good games instead of just decent junkfood games.

I definitely think the right move would be to end the modern day and give the people who’ve been following this story since the very first game some kind of closure. It’s long past due. However, the tragedy of ending the series as a whole, and I think the UA-camr Whitelight said this best, is that it would end without ever reaching its potential. We’ve STILL yet to get that perfect AC where everything is firing on all cylinders. Dense, well designed city, mechanically deep but still stylish parkour, fast paced, deep, and clean stealth, any social stealth improvements at all, challenging combat that encourages stealth but is still fun and deep on its own, a story where the actual creed of the assassin’s is front and center… as much as I doubt it will ever happen, I still hold out on some crazy hope that we might actually get that game one day. It’d be a real shame if the franchise died before ever hitting that peak.

I think that after ACIII the direction they went in with Black Flag etc. where you're just an Abstergo Entertainment employee exploring memories for the corporation was a good direction. The Desmond story couldn't go on forever, so once it was done I think that this direction would have enabled endless exploration of different time periods without needing to focus on the modern day setting. Obviously you lose something by lacking a meta narrative, but the attempts to create one in the most recent games have just been rubbish.

Should Assassin's Creed end? It's modern day yes, for the exact reasons you said. The franchise as a whole no. We still have a lot of potential left for AC in revisiting historical settings. The unique gameplay, especially traversal is something that is needed as well. No other game does traversal like AC. If I haven't played AC in a while I always find myself craving the parkour.
How would it end? I would love to see us lose. I don't mean the Assassins, I mean us humans. I'd love for the games to be like: Assassins and Templars got so consumed in their never ending battle that they couldn't manage to save the world from its destruction, or maybe a reemergence of Isu, who wanted to enslave humanity again. One thing AC used to include in its philosophical debates was whether it was actually worth it for our characters to fight for what they did. Altair, Ezio, Connor and Arno all were left with bittersweet endings, debating with themselves if anything they did mattered, whether they had any agency in their actions etc. Disproving that would be a very shocking way to end the franchise and definitely memorable.
Will Assassin's Creed ever end? Definitely, all things do. It's inevitable. But I hope it still has plenty of years left. I enjoy the franchise quite a lot, even the newer games which are not exactly my cup of tea have some really good elements in them. There is just something about Assassin's Creed that I really like, even if I can't describe it accurately, if at all. It's like eating your favourite food. It brings back memories, feelings, excitement. My only wish is for Ubisoft to start actually listening to their fans. Specifically on iterating on their existing gameplay formats instead of always making new ones from scratch.

In my opinion, as long as Ubisoft's greed still exists, the AC franchise will continue to exist even when historical settings that appeal to AC fans' favor, such as Japan, WWII, the Cold War, the Vikings, Egypt, or other settings have been used totally. AC will continue to exist, it's just a matter of whether or not Ubisoft can make, package, evaluate, and improve the quality of its series, such as philosophical ideas, conflict escalation, gameplay features, graphics, and various other game production things in general, competing with other game developers as well as business competition. Lastly, the only 'the end' I assumed is we as consumer could end the AC Franchise by stop playing this franchise which is nearly impossible.

Dig through all the old games find scenes where we the players played as assassins and from what the game told us we were the good guys then have a Templar explain it back to us and fill in gaps in the memory to make it so the template have never been the bad guys but the assassins have. They’ve already set it up with The new modern day protag for those who have finished Valhalla. I feel like the direction they were taking the modern day in after AC3, with Demond’s death and the reveal of the new threat being Juno, would have been a good way to end the modern day narrative if they had started it without the weird nonsense of the Abstergo employee scenes in Blacj Flag and Rogue, devolving it to just cut scenes in Unity and Syndicate that didn’t provide any investment to the player and eventually giving it a jarring ending in the comics, out of game. That story felt like a great excuse to bring broth the Assassins and Templars together to fight a common foe, forcing them to use all of their resources and knowledge to end a threat that none of them want to exist.
There could have been a conclusion where it ends with a sort of cease fire or compromise between the two factions, maybe it could have resulted in all POEs being deactivated somehow, essentially removing that conflict thread between the groups. Ubisofts lack of vision and direction for the modern day narrative that had served as a framing device for the series from the beginning is what killed that entire story.
I know the fanbase is split on this but I’m of the side that was deeply invested in that narrative. Its mystery was so intriguing to me, and I found it so interesting how the story of the historical periods tied into it in some way. But at this point it’s just such a mess that it no longer provides that same value, to either the people who hated the modern day or loved it.

I don't think so. AC or Far Cry formula is already improved upon by many other games in the same genre, some of them even made by Ubisoft themselves such as Watch Dogs 1 and 2. But there is no other anthological game series that's about historical places and landmarks. Whenever someone makes a game about that setting such as God of War games or Nioh they want to implement supernatural/mythological elements to it too. AC is relatively grounded which is in it's advantage imo. You can find tons of Norse mythology inspired games with gods and supernatural elements at their center-piece but you can't find many games about just a regular viking doing viking stuff(also assassin stuff). Even the supposed AC competitors such as Rise of Ronin or Ghost of Tsushima takes place in 1 setting and whenever they are going to make a sequel to those games they will also take place in same or similar settings. We won't see Ghost of Berlin or Ghost of Athens we will see Ghost of Tsushima 2. So AC doesn't need to end until someone else makes an anthological historical game series imo.

Just find a nice historical setting like W.S China, any period japan, WW1, Colonizers first arrival or Rome. I think when you don't have a major plan for your franchise's future as to how it will end or continue, you cannot build toward something specially in modern day. And without modern day AC is not AC anymore it's not as special as it should be. But I think ending it now would be pity as we've never seen this franchise's fullest potential. Probably the best way for it would be a game built off of all good games we've had in the series with a peak modern day ending which wraps the conflict up. And then maybe reboot the franchise or release remakes or even spinoff games. What makes me sad the most is that ubi does have the potential to make amazing games both storywise and gamplaywise. But the problem is all they're looking for is getting more money by putting out more games, not better games. Which kinda ties back to your video about the ac game that is going to be made by ubi sofia where you mentioned they can't build games off of each other

The main plot of the modern day, which is "the world's gonna end" must end. The modern day storyline shouldn't.
Assassin's Creed is a game doomed (and I don't mean it in a bad way) to never end. It's a philosofical warfare. The templars believe in control and the assassins believe in freedom. Freedom, inevitably creates the templars and the templars inevitably creates the assassins. Even if all pieces of eden, ISU tech and temples were to be destroyed, the conflict wouldn't end. Never.
If the templars win, there's a case to be made. Let's say the ISU return and rule over humanity again. They themself still free, they will fight, Adam and Eve will probably happen again. If the ISU don't get reborn, then the templars will rule humanity and it will essentially become a Cyberpunk-ish dystopia, which will lead into either a underground culture decided to fight against the status quo, even if they can't change the world, or Adam and Eve all over again since the templars still humans and if tue ISU made that mistake, chances are they will too.
Philosophically speaking, as long those two ideology are capable of existing, which they are in every single possible outcome, the assassins and templars conflict WILL exist. We have this conflict today in our society, freedom or control, just not as flashy and cool as the games make.
This doesn't mean that the games shouldn't get an end, or even that they can't, just means that even if the games get an end, in lore the war will never be over.

Assassins and templars should have eventually come to an understanding after 2012, IMO.
The game should have ended in AC3
This animus thing is the reason why they dragging the series IMO if assassins don't have any artifacts and information to find out there is no reason for them to use it
So writers bring new stories and conflicts so they can show this assassin trying to get this artifact by using animus before the Templars get it, but tempers found it first, and conflict again killing each other and again and repeat.
Give us an ending both factions no longer need to use animus to relive history,
    THE END!!!
Then they can give us assassins Creed games that show what happened in this part of the world in the 16th century, or they can show the lesser-known history of each part of the world
    For example
why Vasco da Gama came to Kerala India 3times in the 1500s (Portuguese vs Marakkar family conflict as assess vs temp and some artifact shit as usual )
Why was the Chinese Great Wall built (just put some artifacts and temp vs assess conflict)
Or they can show what templars and assassins did in WW1 & 2 like a normal game without any animus simulation like a normal game's story
Or they can give sequels to our some beloved characters like Altair, Arno, and Bayek, we don't know what happened after the game's events,
There are a lot of time skips in Altair's story in revelations,
They should do this without someone accessing their memory, like their own game

No. The series can go indefinitely seeing as it has all human history to play with. The series can take breaks and go wacky with the "modern day" but honestly what other franchise in gaming gives you what this franchise gives you? Sure you got a period piece here or there like the endless ninja games. However Medicore and formulaic these games can be at times it sits comfortably as my comfort food and guilty pleasure. It feels a hole.
Let it be like some Japanese anime that go on forever or even Doctor Who.
In fact appease all fans by having classic ac, rpg ac, and weird ac, happening I guess happening parallel to each other one year you have one style the next the other.
I was thinking of having the modern day have something to do with simulation hypothesis. Not (it was all a dream) rather the modern day protagonist are like Ezio and the player character is another character observing them in the future. You could even break the mold and bring back the type of modern day missions from 3 but instead do it with random assassins over the world. Since this is all just the animus.
I don't feel comfortable with any "future" setting missions. Keep the future as mysterious as the Isu civilization was at the start.
