Making an episode about an Institute that you respect is not easy - tried to stick to hard data - that shows a worrying trend. Really touched with so many IIT alumni reaching out that sharing their story and the fact that too much is expected out of a IIT Graduate. Hope this episode helps in a little way. Though not many - did manage to draw a few smart comments that enquired about my educational qualifications ... not that it matters - but here goes:))))) Schooling - La Martiniere College Graduation - Hindu College Masters - St.Stephens MSc - Got admission into Boston University (but dad didn't have 40+ lakh to spare:))) Had the privilege of studying in the best school / colleges of India - But had to work my butt off in the media sector - no godfather - no alumni support - just kept up-skilling and learning on the job.

All students are confused in India about how to choose best course for his life, for study, for money and for future

@@iitjee2024target shutting down with full force ..startups r ones who r sacking more than 70% while Google, twitter r laying off only 20% Startup survival is make or break stage now
Startup culture is encouraged, but is very small. The majority mindset is still and always pushed to be placement. It's very few students maybe 3-4 percent who willingly take the risk to go beyond and do something different.
nah the problem is even after they are from IITs they take irrelevant courses like Metallurgical Engg, Material Engg, Ocean Engg, etc and stay jobless, they should choose CSE, ECE, Civil and other popular courses that are relevant in Job market. Although I'm a BCA passout from a Tier-3 college currently working, I'm lucky I didn't waste my time taking stupid courses.
I'm not from IIT, (ECE from Tier 3 College). But right from the beginning, I was interested in Software Development. I did lot of courses in the same, did projects, increased my rating in Competitive Programming. Finally grabbed International Offer!! With my experience, I can confidently say that, in the present world, you don't need an IIT degree to be successful. "IIT degree" acts as a catalyst for your success but absence of it doesn't make you a failure. Just focus on your skills, be a top player of the game. Your college, your degree, your grades, your branch doesn't matter. The journey is tough but sure is worth rewarding.
Imtiyaz Ji what you say is very true. I’m a retired ObGyn Prof and I graduated from a Tier 2 institution and taught all my 30y of working life in a Tire 3 Med Coll and I can with confidence say I did better teaching than the Tire 1 Med Coll colleagues and my students have done better than anybody. The IITs & AIMS only prepare Engineers & Doctors for the west.
As a fellow IIT graduate with a specialization in Mechanical Systems, I can totally relate to the dilemma of whether or not IITs are still worth it. After clearing GATE 2019, I had high hopes of doing excellent research and finding a job where my skills would be valued. However, after two years of hard work and a CGPA of 9.5/10, during the placement, I was offered a position of graduate trainee with a package of 10 lakh per annum. Although this was the highest pay for many of my batchmates who wanted to continue in the core sector, I ended up rejecting the job offer and pursuing my PhD in artificial intelligence and renewable energy in France. I must say, it has been a way more rewarding experience than I ever imagined. So, to answer the question "Are IITs still worth it?", it totally depends on your aspirations and the path you want to take.
There is no Industry in India. What do u expect?? U work in a heavy engineering firm in India which will have only domestic demands, i.e in country demands.... It's no Hyundai heavy engineering, Boosan, GE, Semens, which have international monopoly.... Germany has 4-5 big firms itself along with smaller firms, India has just TATA, that's it. What do u expect???

Not only IIT courses need to be re evaluated. But the entire education system in India needs to be re evaluated. Our Education system should encourage minds with problem solving skills rather than focusing on minds with memory keeping skills. This is something we will be talking about in the coming times but I'm happy people have begun to address the issue starting from IIT.
I moved to USA to pursue PhD after graduating from IIT. The difference is day and night when it comes to work culture and treatment towards students. Students have freedom to pursue courses of their interest and are respected by their professors here in USA while in India we still live in the age where professors bully students for reasons I never understood.
Professor bullying students I can related to it just don't agrees with professor theory I got F 😇😇my whole GPA go down coz of that F. never will forget that A** hole face in my life

An IITian here. The content of this video is absolutely true. No doubt that IITs do office some security in terms of job, salary, quality education and networking. However the amount of pressure that students go through during preparation is not worth all that. I appeared for IIT-JEE for the first time in 2015, but couldn't clear it. I was so much depressed. My world turned upside down. I used to cry at nights. However I gathered courage and started preparing again and luckily cracked JEE in 2016. God knows what I would have done if I didn't clear JEE in 2016 either. Now when I look back I feel that I was depressed for no reason. Most of my colleagues and seniors in my company are non-IITians. And they are also as intelligent as I am (or probably more 😅). They are earning at par with me. If you are a JEE aspirant, do remember that going to an IIT is great but not at the cost of your happiness and mental health.
Same colleagues are from all type of schools. All are salaried employees forced to work 9am to 10 pm and keep crying to change jobs but don't cuz of pay.
Took 2 year drop for NEET & my experience was the same. Won't recommend it to anyone (especially if they've mental health issues. Tbh, phases like these break even the strongests) unless they're REALLY passionate about it. NOTHING is more important than your physical & mental health.
I was a State ranker..Failed to get seat at IIT...Had to go for Only Diploma Course due to family & financial problems, Done some basic jobs like sweeper, typing etc.. during education..some relatives (some are billionaire) doesn't even want to see my face.however I was tried to learn business methods too..after 10 years results on business comes ..Profits reached 10cr first time in history. Moral : Never Give up !
that is not the case, faculties in IITs are highly qualified in their respective subjects, the thing is there is no need of these new subjects in the real market, when only thing they need is CS engineer.
Professional college is for helping to understand the fundamentals in deeper and cleaner manner. Once your fundamentals are clear you yourself need to work on new courses technologies. This new courses will be based on industry demands and the industry changes in every 5-6 year time. If you are skillful and your fundamentals are strong you can learn any thing new at any time. Please note, professional colleges are not a placement cell.
I can tell about situation in 31 NITs across India. NITs are thought of as 2nd grade institutions if IITs are thought of as 1st grade institutions. I was PhD fellow in mathematics in NIT Durgapur and i saw people after Mtech doing PhD in their disciplines. I asked couple of engineering students why are doing PhD after Mtech, why don't do job ? Their answers were "companies are offering 20k salary per month, it is better to join PhD where you get monthly 31k fellowship better than 20k job". The job situation of engineering students is very disappointing
i am also an ECE engineering Student ( VIT vellore ). this is verry serious problem for any of our indian engineering colleges and manufacturing industries . if you see or hear then there is only large number of IT jobs but very less core engineering Job . this indicate that there is very less manufacturing industry in our country.
My friend is also from VIT and did ECE. He's doing a 13LPA IT job which he got by preparing for Computer programming and problem solving. Jobs in mechanical, chemical, civil are very very less when compared to the number of students
Hi, is it just about lack of jobs in other sectors or also about the lack of niche and applied courses provided by Indian universities? As someone who has been working in the study abroad industry, I am amazed by the kinds of niche and practical programs universities offer abroad. I believe India needs to grow in research, higher ed opportunities which would contribute to the growth and establishment of new industries.
If you are above average, you can crack government exams for core. Trust me, my seniors from core branch have cracked those exams, just studying 2 hours daily from 2nd year. Competition is less when you know your syllabus
IITans are successful not because of IIT, but because the students who go there are genuinely hardworking and consistent students. These qualities also help them in life ahead. People, companies know this fact hence they try to give these students the opportunities they deserve. Hence the hard working nature and consistency of the student gives them success not IIT entirely.
Only general candidates. Getting into IIT despite of state based apartheid is really commendable and such students are the one who are high package grabbers.
Being an IITian , I can say that most of the people who don't get jobs are the once who don't sit for placements and opt for higher studies. Also many students don't score bare minimum cgpa for sitting for placements. So yes , competition is even more after going into an IIT too , because everyone has come after cracking one of the worlds toughest exams. It doesn't makes sense saying if you get IIT you will be successsfull. You need to grind even more , and that is a fact.
I am in class 10th and seriously this video chills me... though I haven't thought much about going to an IIT but can guess that other sectors are going through the same fate. I always wanted to learn new skills and will surely boost that up after this.
If you wanna do CA by opting commerce It's best option Since ICAI which is organisation of CA Offered 12000 jobs And there were 10000 CA qualifiers Meaning CA has more demand and less supply

In 2020 I gave GATE Exam and secured a rank of 5000, and took admission in Jadavpur University. I thought that since it was such a prestigious university in Kolkata the course for Mtech in CSE would also be very good. But after joining I came to know that it was very outdated, and the main focus of the entire course was on the theoritcal subjects and the teaching method of most of the faculty were below par. After continuing for a semester I decided to drop off. Even the de-registration process was very challenging as most of the task was to be performed offline. Nothing happens online there.

The truth is that Indian society views IITs just as a ticket to a 1cr package and a job in Silicon valley, and not as institutes that further humanity. Until that mentality won't change, we will never progress
I spent 4 years of my life in IIT Bombay. I think there are lot of opportunities apart from doing graduation from IIT. Less than 5 percent students get satisfied after completing there graduation from IITs. So be careful before to make IIT as your dream.
As an IITian myself, I think one of the biggest problems isn't that of IIT, but the sheer lack of jobs for any other core field other than Computer Science (or maybe even Electronics). For the remaining branches, one may think that there must be some opening, cause if there weren't any jobs then why on earth would these departments even exist, right? But the fact of the matter is that virtually nobody in these branches actually takes a job in their own specialization (even if they do, it's because they weren't getting anything else). Also, as academics in IITs is much more rigorous and difficult compared to any other external institute, it's tougher for IITians that students from other colleges to study the courses from their own specialization, whilst also studying Computer Science for their placements in Software engineering firms. That leaves students from these branches with just 2 options - study in their own specialization and work hard to get a menial low-paying job, or some further education (if you have the money to fund it, ofc); or ditch their specialization entirely to study Computer Science for Software firms. Most people would clearly choose the second option, which works out generally. However, this year was much different as the global tech recession caused most Software firms to virtually freeze all placements. This has caused far worse placements than usual, as if we exclude high-paying trading firms, IBs and HFTs (none of which are related to engineering, btw), very very few companies actually paid a hefty salary for the to-be graduates. This recession has sent shockwaves even to junior batches, most of whom have essentially shifted their focus entirely from Computer Science to fields like Finance, Consulting, Management and Trading; none of which are related to engineering in any way. If anything, IITs' placements stats show that the domain of engineering itself isn't nearly as secure a domain in the job market as once thought to be. My prediction is that in the coming years, more and more IITians would join IIT just for the sake of it, whilst completely immersing themselves in studying Management-related fields for Finance and Consulting positions.
It's completely true I was also I.T student but by God grace or something i switched my faculty on time As result i saved lots of money, needed time and most important mental peace Today i am soft skill trainer and writer with healthy mind Lastly i urge all you who are reading this please don't ignore your mental health
I never got placed when I completed my Master's in IIT Madras, which even led to me being suicidal. It has taken at least 1.5 years of therapy to recover from that. Eventually, I shifted away from Civil Engineering because of low job demand. I re-skilled myself as a software developer (I was able to do that because of my privilege to some extent), to get a good job and even now I am underpaid, despite highly specialized nature of my job (requires competency in engineering, computer science and Math). I still wish I should have gone to Europe or USA or Canada. No wonder India has so much brain drain. We simply don't have respect for highly skilled employees, especially, but not limited to, ones from engineering background. I love engineering a lot and I think a lot of students too, but struggle for getting admission and then failing to get a job really hurts the morale of students. No wonder India has so many suicide attempts among students. EDIT: Also, there is a fundamental issue of not many entrepreneurs rising in India, for the simple reason that our education stifles the creativity of student. I think the reasons are far too deep than represented in the video. India simply does not know how to use the vast range of talents present among the students. For example, I always wanted to work in space agency, specifically to develop computational tools. However, I cannot do that in ISRO because first, they don't take experienced engineers (because they want to take only through an exam, which apparently our govt thinks is more fair and there is also an age limit) and second, the kind of work I have to do in ISRO is decided by my specialization and not my interests (because governments have decided a career path according to specialization without any flexibility). This further stifles creativity of people. That is the reason our research institutes don't contribute too much in any sector and research is generally stagnant, because there is no value to the new ideas and no funding for ideas. Because there is no funding, no ideas are executed and no new companies are created and hence, not a whole lot of jobs. Indian industries depend a lot of international products/companies because we simply don't have funding to fund ideas of our own. For example, the almost entire IT industry depends on international contracts to earn money, very, very few companies have products of their own. One I know of is Byju's, which provides a service of very dubious utility to it's customers, in my opinion. We hardly try to develop new technologies, products or services, if at all. Sorry, for the long essay, but the issue is very, very nuanced and lies in the flawed foundations on which education system is laid out here.
It's not respect, if all run for jobs who will create business and employ them. It's youth fault only. We have to compete with foreign country people in business then only people will be employed.

Hello Akash.......I am a doctor, currently an aspirant for NEET PG. I would like you to emphasis on the current state of young doctors in our country. As per a RTI reply by National Medical Commission, in the last 5 years, 64 UG and 55 PG students have committed suicide. 150 UG students and 956 PG doctors have dropped out of the college due to various reasons. The cost of medical education in India, the quality of training and the enormous amount of workload coupled with imbalance in UG/PG seats. I would urge you to make a separate video on this topic so that common people can understand the irony of medical education in India.
True.. I am also a doc, NEET pg aspirant. And the way we r being treated like shit by NMC, judiciary is pathetic. I think MBBS degree is too much overrated in our society, just like IIT. Many students go into it coz they don't knw wht other options r for bio. The field is highly toxic, interns r made to wrk like donkeys, and also the increasing violence against us by patients. No one is ready to listen.. Many of my frnds r contemplating of leaving the country jst for a better working environment.. Everything is soo mismanaged. Fellow NEET PG aspirant here bro, I was just going to type the same. No body is held accountable for the injustice and suicides. No fair working hours for residents.
Aakash, I am from IIM. Thank you for bringing the suicide agenda. Being a mother, it scares me to think - what's the use of the education if it compels students to take such extreme steps. These places are very very good at creating Intelligent money minting bots. So, lets not expect compassion. Please do understand these students have reached the top just by focusing on themselves, focus focus & focus. We have not been taught to think about others and we have not learnt too. So, how can you expect anything else? Exceptions are there but very rare.
Mam not only suicide I have known about a grape attempt by prof on his phd student, after which he was removed and ordered not to come near the Institute and the student's degree was put on hold. This never comes out in to the public, everything is hidden. And the profs, most of them are not even humble when u ask them normal questions, either they don't know stuff and they don't teach it well, if they have some knowledge they are extremely rude always thinking of ways to bully u.
You are absolutely correct, I've seen a lots of cases that education and banner is Just a ladder to build up one's future but qualified thinking, dedication, devotion and patience to acquire is much important, we the parents shouldn't create pressure, Just to motivate the children simultaneously we should listen and understand their minds and capacity, parents का प्यार, मोह का बंधन में बच्चे खो जतें हैं,
This will continue If aim of higher education is only gaining big package job/s in InterNational Companies... Overall development is Missing.. People are not able to focus on themselves well too.. they dont know how to keep themselves mentally & physically fit.. ( very basic requirement of life )..

Many IITians are working as accountants in Retail Jobs like Amazon, Shoe- Making Cobbler Companies like Nike and Grocery Outlets sourcing farm produce to bring to grocery market. This does not require IIT education. You can do these in India itself.
Darun bolecho Abhishek da. Being an IIT grad I can relate to this absolutely. But this is not just for IITs but for very good universities as well. People have a conception that if someone is studying in a reputed institute he will get everything automatically. However, people fail to see 70-80% students struggle to get through such phases. It is humiliating. And the present fintech and IT sector totally outshines all other sectors which also makes it very clear how our traditional sectors are lacking and soon with automation there won't be any high paying jobs, that's why if you see diploma college placement data in some areas they are doing better as Indian industries needs labours at cheap price, they don't need specialists. They are outsourcing it anyway.
India and Indians have been looking at institutions like IITs through the wrong lens. Their counterparts in the US, like MIT, Harvard etc, are not looked at as factories that create workers for mundane jobs but rather thinkers, thought leaders and entrepreneurs who will incubate the next adventure, business, technology and will "create" jobs and intellectual property that benefits the whole country and humanity in general. Until we change our mindset and attitude towards these institutions and foster them to be what they should be, we will continue to see these transactional disappointments.
This is the actual sad reality of our education system. One of my friend's wife did a PhD in plasma physics, now she is teaching in a school because of no jobs in her subjects..
Experimental plasma physics doesn't really exist, thus I assume it's computational and theoretical with simulations. In that case, she could have used those with some programming in analytics and related areas. Curious why not
well, being in IIT and studying the courses I can fully relate this. I know IITs are best but it is because of the students who makes the IITs worth it. I think administrators should think of upgrading the curricular and also focus on Research opportunities.
Yes , the video is correct but I am also from IIT MADRAS , and yes only 5% of the students will grab the highest packages but students and parents as well as teachers should remember that the tough entrance exams were for admission into IITs and the probability of getting a job is simply result of one's presence of mind and the ability to handle all kinds of pressure
I am currently associated with one of the 'prestigious' IITs for setting up a Centre of Excellence. We had to agree on giving totally new courses through the Centre with pre-identified demand from industry. Academic upgradation can only work when the IITs work together as partners. But unfortunately the common sentiment is of competition among these institutions.
Plzz sir made a vedio on IAS scam.. Becoz many coaching institutions attract students and lakhs of students waste life for merely 400 posts.. And almost 98 percent students got depressed by not selecting in IAS after 8 years of time waste in it. And then they got nothing.
That's what I am saying people in India are wasting their precious teenage years, their most productive years of life preparing for exams. The main reason behind this rat race is the Indian mentality where people who get a government job or become IAS/IPS are celebrated like heroes and overhyped. Mostly the coachings do so. Well they have to make their business. If they would not hype the exam they are training students for no one would buy their courses, test series and study packages. This is all bloody business. If you want to sell your product first create its hype.

Most of the jobs are limited to the IT sector. In IIt's, most students who prepare for IT companies ( Please mark my words. I wrote that students who prepare for IT companies, not the CSE students) get placed at the end of the 2nd day or 3rd day of placement. For some other branches, the jobs are a little fewer. But if you are targeting the IT companies and preparing correctly, you will land a good-paying job. Yes, skills play an essential role over degree. But this doesn't mean that degrees play zero roles. IIT tag can give you a chance to stand out, but how you will take advantage of that chance depends on your skills. I agree that IIT does not mean success. There are different ways also, but IIT still gives you something. In my opinion, IIT means something other than success. IIT gives you opportunities and the stage, but how you perform depends on you. One more point that I want to address is that assume that there is an IAS person selected as a cricketer in the Indian team. And he is not performing well in the Indian team. His performance is poor. So does retain him makes a good point? Obviously no. The same thing happens when you will get a job after IIT. If you are not doing justice with your job, then how you can say that the IIT tag should protect me (Don't take it personally, not talking about a massive layoff). This is incorrect to say that IIT should defend my job. Why should IIT protect your job if you do not add value to the company? One thing that I disagree with is equality. They do justice with equality. You should get some relevant information about the placement session in IITs. I am impressed with the placement sessions and placement guidelines at IIT compared to other colleges. In one day, there are two slots. And the company will get slots depending on the package they offer and the company's tag. A student can get any number of offers in a particular slot but has to accept only one offer in that slot and take exit from the placement. For example, If a student gets placed in company 'y' and in the same slot he was placed in company 'z', then he has to take one offer and take exit from the placement so that every student will get a chance and the student already know that which company came in which day and which slot. And most good companies got early slots only. So there is no point in participating in further slots. This will not happen when you first get placed for TCS, but then you will get to know that Google is coming. This will never be going to happen. Depending on its tag, relations, and package, the company will get slots. So there is no harm in taking an offer from a slot and taking an exit so that every student will get a chance. In the video, you mention that company 'X' offers less package. This may be true. But this needs to be completed information. If company 'X' offers less package and is not well-reputed. The company 'X' will not get the early-day placement slots. It got a slot after 10-12 days. Till 10-12 days, most of the targetted student gets placed. What I mean by the targetted student is let's assume company 'X' is an IT company, so till 10-12 days, most students who prepare for IT company get placed. Only those students left who prepare significantly less or no preparation for the IT company. I am saying that those students are okay in study. I am saying maybe they did not prepare for the targetted role. The point that I want to add is you have to make a good balance between the college tag and specialization. You have to understand the jobs available in the market for that particular specialization, and if a job is available, will this college help me get the job? Don't think I got the tag, and that specific tag will do every good thing for me ( This is true for all the tags, not only IIT). Many of us think that story ends when you enter into IIT. But the reality is your story is just started.
I did a chemical engineering program at IIT Delhi after getting a good rank, but now I work in the IT sector. The curriculum was boring and hard, and people who scored much lower than me in JEE are earning 5 times more money than I am. I feel like IIT wasted my time. those who went to lower branches at IIT can understand my frustration because I don't get the respect I deserve. Additionally, individuals with less academic pressure not only read literature, learn new skills, and enjoy their leisure time but also engage in sports activities. Moreover, the fees charged by IITs are significantly higher compared to state engineering colleges. And despite being so unsuccessful and hurdles people mock you like “bhai tum to IIT ho” Even professors are only supportive for further education if you are a 9 pointer other they don’t care
As an IIT kanpur undergrad from EE , I do agree by your few points . But you know what is best about IIT and IITians is that they are surrounded by intelligent people everytime and this pushes them to work even more harder and prove their credibility. They manages to land into a decent jobs sooner or later.

@@dinesh6489 Its not about fighting with our community. It's about how a deserving student can't get a seat at good iit in good branch but one from SC ST gets it even at low marks. The bitter fact is that they can't even cope up to level of teaching at these prestigious institutions.
I'll tell you my example I am going to give Jee adv this year I am damn sure I'll get under 900 hundred rank but still won't be able to make to top 7 iits cs branch . While one with 'lower caste' gets it easily.
Same goes for IIM s. You have to skill yourself and learn techniques, do courses which will not necessarily be taught in class. After that do boot licking of placement committee to ensure maximum shortlists. After that too final placement is random, that is, not everyone gets the desired packages and good companies even after hard work.
Not sure if it’s a hidden detail , but I’m glad that you chose the national science day to explain the other side of issue…. Respectfully very impressed 👏🏻
Being an NITian(NIT Silchar CSE), I too agree that many times, there are courses that are taught in IITs/NITs & other colleges which are irrelevant and does not have any relation with the branch a student is pursuing....Even sometimes I also feel that those good things that I imagined during my JEE preparation about college are far far away from the reality :)

I am an IITian and pass out from IIT MUMBAI (CS, 2012 Batch) currently working as a Senior Software Consultant in USA (NYC) in a Top MNC. I can definitely confirm that whatever you told is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, now the standard (In terms of Skill Sets) of IIT graduates has been degraded a lot and I feel very very bad about it because they are getting fired immediately. Their learning attitude is also not there in the industry because they think that they are the best because society and parents think so. To be very honest, after spending 10yrs in this IT Software industry, still I always look to enhance my skill sets and as per my reporting manager I am one of the extremely highly skilled professional but I really don’t know whether my job is safe or not in this global recession. People in the Society including the parents, they don’t want to understand that what an IITian is going through in his life. We are just living in a false illusionary society where people thinks that every IITian is well settled and perfect in their professional life which is absolutely wrong.
I agree. THe skills based jobs have nothing to do with education. The software industry is evolving and the businesses want quick results so they hire only based on skills and ignore education and other background of the candidate
IITan from Madras, the content is to the point and absolutely true. Only CSE grad gets the good package, which makes headlines. Also on numerous occasions, companies withdraw offers after providing a joining letter (it happened with my mates, Flipkart had withdrawn the offer). Overall it is nice to get admission to IIT, but it's not the end of the world.
Hey! I am a jee aspirant and getting nits/iiits but never prepared for jee advanced. I am regretting because according to stats even ceramic branch in IIT BHU has avg package 23+ LPA which is too much for a lower branch. In IIT GUWAHATI, no branch had median package of less than 18 LPA. If this is the case, why do people say that majority of people fall in 10-18 lpa category and that lower branches do not get good placements?
Hi Akash, Thanks for the great episode as always - as an IIT graduate (2010), I resonate with your core message - the glossy pay figures of a few mask the overall picture. It was a similar situation in 2009-10 when I graduated. Wanted to make two comments as I have observed over the years: 1) Good salary offered by banks, consulting firms, and non-core jobs distorts the preferences of most students - kind of defeats the intent of establishing IITs to create engineering and research talent. This is a systemic issue which cant be fixed by the institutes - until core jobs become lucrative, good students will go for best-paying jobs irrespective of what they studied. 2) While immediate salary post-IIT might not be grand (10-16lac as you mentioned), the average earnings of an IITian over 10-15 years is a more appropriate lens to judge if IIT is worth the money/effort (and I would believe the answer is yes, as I have seen most of my batchmates, as I know, have done exceptionally well). That's where the brand and network effort starts to play. The challenge is this long term is easier said than considered - neither parents, nor students or media would look at this way - our human tendency is short-term/immediate reward thinking.
Sir, the generation today thinks that in the long run which you are talking about, everyone will be dead ! Actually it takes too much to get the degree these days as compared to what it was 15 years ago ...and waiting for that long is not worth it
I'm also an IIT graduate (1990), and I know many IITians and non-IITians for over 30 years, and I can say that over the long-term, universities don't matter at all. All that matters is the work that you do, and by extension, your work ethic, passion, creativity, and ability to get along with others. For example, I know a person who graduated from a Tier 3 college in India and is now VP of International Transactions at Citi in the USA, and Citi does not care where he graduated from. The biggest advantage that IITians have is not the education, but the network.

Fascinating and highly informative as always. I have friends who are from IITs and NITs and sadly, this is true. I almost went into engineering but I followed my passion and created a 3D design and animation startup. I would love it if Akash has time to cover the animation, game design and vfx fields as well, because a lot of people are highly skilled, passionate and dedicated artists who deserve a good compensation and career, but unfortunately it is very much ignored in our country, where India has the largest outsourcing work for Hollywood movies and video games.
Hey! Deshbhakt talks about how lower branch people in IITs end up getting 10lpa-16lpa but is it really true? I just saw the placement stats and even Ceramic in IIT BHU has avg 23+ LPA . It's crazy. Very well said Sir. The things you said about the necessity of soft skills were way too enlightening. These skills are indeed very important in todays time and scenario. In a world where AI and ML are making our lives easier we need to know the importance of those who use these these tools in the most justified and efficient manner.
Very well said, Akash! However, I want to mention that intelligence is evenly distributed among all individuals, and it ultimately depends on how one utilizes it. I am speaking on behalf of individuals who did not attend IITs. I have observed many engineers who are preparing for bank jobs or receiving computer training, including IIT students. Therefore, one should not label IIT students as the cream of society because one day they may have to compete with someone who did not attend an IIT. Additionally, even Indian CEOs in the US did not necessarily graduate from IITs. Many obtained additional MBA degrees or computer training, and 99% of individuals working overseas did not attend IITs and earn similar salaries to IIT graduates. Nowadays, attending top colleges is not essential, but possessing a basic degree and expertise in a sought-after software such as AI or machine learning can take you to great heights. This message is not intended to discourage IIT students or their parents but to inspire all others. As Akash stated, skill-based education plays a crucial role in shaping our future.
as an IITian I can vouch for this!! The problem is the jobs are limited to the IT sector, hence circuital branches (CSE, EE, ECE) are the only ones to have great placements (yes we on average get more than 35LPA CTC) . We definitely have the best faculty however considering the market condition engineering has now become more about cracking the coding interviews and getting into IT sector irrespective of your core branch.
see, the thing with this AI takeover is obviously scary, but we must understand that everyone should do what they desire and emergence of a disruptive technology shouldn't hinder it, rather it should make it more exciting. I would advise you to let her do what her heart wants and she surely would be able to make you proud. Please don't loose your sleep over the AI saga.
From NIT Rourkela cse branch (rejected IITs lower branches) Every stated point is true but the real problem lies with the profs too ,they really don't wanna teach. We watch UA-cam videos for almost every other subject to pass exams .
Bro if I join lower branch of nit Rourkela will I get ample of time to study cs and crack placement through myself and complete the studies of lower branch parallely???
I am also an IITian. Maximum no. of unemployed students are from reserved category. They get admission due to reservation but unable to complete the course with >8.5 CGPA. Though, they get admission for Engineering, but they start preparing for Civil services or CAT and don't work on their skills.
Hi Akash/Team, The video is very true. Can you please also make another video on the research scenario in IITs. Focusing on how IITs are run like a cartel? Getting a job at an IIT as a professor is almost impossible. Also, the focus is always on quantity rather than the quality of papers published. The procurement of lab equipments is also filled with corruption.
I graduated from IIT Roorkee in 2020 and did my bachelor's in Production and Industrial Engineering and can I affirm the points that you have raised here, there is more shocking news that I can tell you regarding the time we were there, we actually wanted the IIT to close our program, it should be a shock because the course and curriculum hasn't been updated for a very long time, even if they update these courses there aren't any faculties that can teach them, i.e why it is one of the main reasons why IIT students don't prefer higher studies from IIT, Akash even if you do this data analysis that for the IIT's , majority of the profs that are hired don't have the domain knowledge regarding the subject they teach and aren't even with a good education background which is one of the reason. Thanks for making this video you don't know how many students are actually suffering by taking these branches.
I am also from an IIT. I am disagree from this point that IIT's prof does not have good educational background. For securing a prof. job in IIT's they have to spend atleast 7 years of research (PhD+PostDoc). It may be that they are not a good teacher but it is not the case that they don't have good educational background.
Kuch bhi IIT proff ka study background check karna most of them has done their PhD,MS from the best universities like MIT , standford ,Caltech so you can't judge their education qualification they might be bad teacher but not a bad researcher wase tumne yeh baat likhi hai Mero ko ajeeb lagi kyuki sabhi iit students ko Pata hai ki unki education background kitni sahi hoti hai I don't think you are from an IIT

Not generalizing but to some extent, teachers are guiding students to get marks and not understanding the subjects better. This is why more students are migrating to study abroad
This was true 20 years ago when I did it 20 years ago.. and I made a good decision to find job in IT. it's better to do engineering in a area where there are jobs rather then institutions
The best strategy to develop a career is choosing a career and building skills around it by yourself, build a portfolio, solve open problems. The jobs would come to you. I was a student at an NIT and I thought I was among cream, but when I landed a job at Reliance Jio . I found people from local engineering colleges doing the same stuff with same salary, thats when I realized joining IIT NIT rat race was a waste of time and building real skills which job market needs matter. I took this learning to advice my younger sibling to join an easier private college that provided scholarship. Presently he is in US at the same place where I am. I wish internet and social media awareness was at current level as are available now
Also you don’t need to join any paid sessions, all the information is free on UA-cam and platforms like edX & coursera. You don’t need any certifications. Doing real life projects on websites like github , tableau are better than certifications which anybody can buy nowadays

I am not from an IIT or NIT, but I know a few friends of mine who are from these colleges, and we are in our BTech final year rn. Trust me, even if our skills are quite good, the one from IIT/NIT will always have an edge. Be it offcampus placements or on campus. In fact , they get the opportunities of getting top jobs because companies pay higher salaries to them and also, on campus is slightly easier than off campus. Hence a person in NIT/IIT will definitely get more opportunities, be it on campus or off campus. This is a reality. People say negative things about these institutes, but deep down most engineering graduates want a good high paying job and yes, these institutes will give you a 10x better opportunity.

Happy holi , Akash sir. I'm preparing for IIT and I was like waiting for this sort of a video. Feeling relaxed after watching the grey shades of IITs.😁👍
I studied in tier 3 college, my hostel friend in mechanical who was average student and even failed in some subjects went to UK for masters and then doctorate and is in research field now.. The potential of an average student to succeed in foreign country even tho he was week in studies shows how behind India is. Too much competition and very little jobs is killing the future of millions of Indians
Yes , the Indian Education system only wants students to rattafication, memorizing a lot of things, and taking loads of things which are not important , We students are chasing IIT,JEE, because all of the students are giving IIT ,JEE and not seeing other exams, skills and not focus on the main Points i.e., SKILLS. The main point of stress in Todays Student is our Indian Education system , Our society says to us that You have to crack, iit, jee but they don't think what a student wants to become. So Students to live in the world without stress follow your dreams and not see what others are chasing off. If we take an example of the German Education System ,the student follows his own dream . So Don't Take Stress 🙏.
I found your episode very informative regarding data. I also give coaching for senior school chemistry for past 10 years the syllabus has not changed, same old concepts. We are not investing in education . Our youth lacks skill. We desperately need a educated education minister.
This video is about Btech in IITs. The situation is even worse for MTech, Msc and PhD courses at IITs. Being from one of newer IITs. In our time in MSc(19-21) , only 1 student got placed out of 31, that too with 6 lac package.
I am MBA. When I was drawing a handsome salary and funding my engineering friends, today after 15 years, all are earning more than me, well above me. It might be a little struggle in the starting, but anyone aspiring for IITs, should not get demotivated coz of this video. Getting into IIT Or IIM does not makes your whole life comfortable. Life is a struggle.
100% agreed IIT's being the gems of our country Still lacks in research, our top institute IIT BOMBAY is at 62nd position in world rankings in research, we surely need to upgrade
I am a PhD from IIT Delhi, currently a postdoc in US. The scientific acumen of Indian researchers is actually pretty good. Research in India cannot compete with the west easily mainly because research is a luxury, the amount of money thrown into research in US mainly by national science foundation, defence agencies, corporates etc cannot be matched by India. Also, feel free to disagree, the majority of people at DRDO and scientific bodies are incompetent mainly because they are majorly selected without research experience. You cannot fill-in scientist positions with people having just masters and limited research experience. Secondly, just by having a US university affiliation in my author list, the value of research paper and chances of acceptance after peer review shoots up. There is a bias inherent which can only be broken by international collaborations. Another major difference is the mindset, in US and the west, people want to do the best work and believe that they can. In India, atleast the older generations of prof. always competed only for the second and third level of international journals and research outputs. Complicated scenario which can only improve over time.
IITs are not meant to guarantee jobs but they are guaranteed to give world class infrastructure and access to various exposures to the students. Itna hi kharab koi IIT k bare me sochta hai to private college se engineering kr le or fir open market me uska competition kisi IIT wale se bhi hoga...!!
I think you should also include data about how much people are going into IIM and UPSC just because they know that they are going to placed but for a iit tag they choose lower branch at a low AIR in JEE advanced and also they are many people from the branches you mentioned are opting for higher studies.
Most of those students don't apply for placements at all. Those who apply for placements and don't get any offer are counted as unemployed by the placement cell
I am not an IITIAN. In my time, i saw so much hype among students in JEE, but I was like I cannot do it, but still gave it and as usual didn't clear it, at that point, my friends and relatives suggested me to take a drop year and give it again, but my mind said not to give this cause i didn't wanted to. I was also from a middle class family and I had passion in the tech field, I got addmission in a nice college in my state which took admission on basis of jee mains (these colleges were not top NIT or IIT). And worked hard and improved my skills side by side, and because of my work and skills, luckily I got a placement of 19lpa. So I was thinking that if i would've given JEE, I would've got 1-5CR packages, but after contacting some of my IITian friends, i knew that my decision was correct and i did a good job by not pressuring myself.

I failed in 5th standard, I failed in 9th again In 10th somehow I got 53% In 12 I got, 44%, yes you read it right. I was never a bright student. Somehow I managed to get into BSC computers (I was getting place in electronics but I realised, in computers I dont have to mug up/learn by heart as I cannot do that since childhood) I was good in logical ability and C/C++ After BSC somehow managed to enter MCA, brushed up my ability to write good code. Infact I was one of few students in my class (full of 70-90% throughout students) who used to implement the practical code programs and whole class use to copy it. Got placed in a small company in campus interview (as this company was not having any bar on academic percentage which anyways I never had) Now its been 15 years in software development and doing well and earning package more than 50LPA. I regret those wasted 2 years in my school, how can I be so dumb to not pass 5th standard ? Anyways ... Not writing this msg to praise myself, its just to say 'Kabil bano kamyabi jhak mara ke ayegi' and never ever feel demotivated in any phase of your life, believe in yourself. We live only once!!

The problem is even if you introduce new courses in colleges the teachers don't know how to teach these new courses properly.
Grim revelation.
that is not the case, faculties in IITs are highly qualified in their respective subjects, the thing is there is no need of these new subjects in the real market, when only thing they need is CS engineer.

Their answers were "companies are offering 20k salary per month, it is better to join PhD where you get monthly 31k fellowship better than 20k job". this indicate that there is very less manufacturing industry in our country.
My friend is also from VIT and did ECE. He's doing a 13LPA IT job which he got by preparing for Computer programming and problem solving. Jobs in mechanical, chemical, civil are very very less when compared to the number of students
True.
The courses covered in VIT in non-IT Engineering are not adequate. This is my experience and observation of VIT.

My prediction is that in the coming years, more and more IITians would join IIT just for the sake of it, whilst completely immersing themselves in studying Management-related fields for Finance and Consulting positions.
but cant there be recessions in finance jobs also?
How do you know someone's from IIT? They'll tell you. Literally no one mentions their alma mater unless they're an IITian.
The main problem is, India is a country of job seekers and not job providers.

I agree to the fact that there is shortage in the entrepreneur mindset in India.
Bingo!!!
Civil engineering has low prsopects of job dude... software ka dekho...
So true. Even the IITians who get lucrative jobs in united states are not getting them as engineers but as MBAs. No creativity nurtured at IIT.

That's what I am saying people in India are wasting their precious teenage years, their most productive years of life preparing for exams.
And despite being so unsuccessful and hurdles people mock you like “bhai tum to IIT ho”
Even professors are only supportive for further education if you are a 9 pointer other they don’t care

Hi Akash, Thanks for the great episode as always - as an IIT graduate (2010), I resonate with your core message - the glossy pay figures of a few mask the overall picture. It was a similar situation in 2009-10 when I graduated. Wanted to make two comments as I have observed over the years:
1) Good salary offered by banks, consulting firms, and non-core jobs distorts the preferences of most students - kind of defeats the intent of establishing IITs to create engineering and research talent.
👌🏽
Sir, the generation today thinks that in the long run which you are talking about, everyone will be dead !
Actually it takes too much to get the degree these days as compared to what it was 15 years ago ...and waiting for that long is not worth it
Perfectly said mate. The huge alumni network is the best part. Rest anyone can learn anything in this day and age.

Hi Akash/Team,
The video is very true.

Very genuine and important topic, and a great lesson to our parents, students, leaders & teachers, infact for everyone...
Great content...👌🏻
Very important topic which you have touched today...True Deshbhakt! 👍
I found your episode very informative regarding data. I also give coaching for senior school chemistry for past 10 years the syllabus has not changed, same old concepts. We are not investing in education . Our youth lacks skill. We desperately need a educated education minister.
This is the reason our young generation are moving abroad after studies for better opportunities and security!
This video is about Btech in IITs. The situation is even worse for MTech, Msc and PhD courses at IITs. Being from one of newer IITs. In our time in MSc(19-21) , only 1 student got placed out of 31, that too with 6 lac package.
Video is about lower branches in IITs

Karle Bhai ...iit me aake aur jyada mehenat karna hoga ....
Truth informs and makes one ready - Lies when hidden - Demotivate.
At any rate, having an engineering degree from an IIT is better than having one from a non-IIT.
But its not worth it.....

Thanks a million for this video
100% agreed
IIT's being the gems of our country
Still lacks in research, our top institute IIT BOMBAY is at 62nd position in world rankings in research, we surely need to upgrade
Good research.. touched all salient points.. ekdum sehmat hope all concerned watch .. and absorb.. for a reality check.
Iim better than IIT ok

I am regularly watching your content and i must appreciate your hardwork, thanks for the information 🙏
Hey! Congrats for the offer. I am a jee aspirant and getting nits/iiits as well but never prepared for jee advanced. I am regretting because according to stats even ceramic branch in IIT BHU has avg package 23+ LPA which is too much for a lower branch. In IIT GUWAHATI, no branch had median package of less than 18 LPA. If this is the case, why do people say that majority of people fall in 10-18 lpa category?
You mentioned that you had a talk with your IITIAN friends and don't really regret preparing for IIT. Can you please elaborate this? Like what did they tell you about placements in IIT?
Hlo may I ask which state college u went to?
I failed in 5th standard,
I failed in 9th again
In 10th somehow I got 53%
In 12 I got, 44%, yes you read it right.
I was never a bright student.
Somehow I managed to get into BSC computers (I was getting place in electronics but I realised, in computers I dont have to mug up/learn by heart as I cannot do that since childhood)
I was good in logical ability and C/C++
After BSC somehow managed to enter MCA, brushed up my ability to write good code. Infact I was one of few students in my class (full of 70-90% throughout students) who used to implement the practical code programs and whole class use to copy it.
Got placed in a small company in campus interview (as this company was not having any bar on academic percentage which anyways I never had)
Now its been 15 years in software development and doing well and earning package more than 50LPA.
