you are doing a great job
We know can you stop advertising it like 5 times already
Could you do a video covering the complicated history of Haiti?
Fun fact: Trujillo back in the mid 1950’s spent approximately 20% of the countries GDP in making a nationwide birthday party for his daughter Angelita, who was turning 15.
I'd say that was one expensive quinceanera!
How is
That a fun fact?
Probably fun for him and her if he spent so much.
😳😳😳😳
more like a sad fact
I lived in DR for 4 years and there are some that still worship this dude
I mean The man shaped what is the modern day DR. Even when we got rid of him, we had his loyalists take over. Sucks Bosh didn’t get a chance due to the US helping rig the election as Bosh was Left leaning (US feared DR going the same way as Cuba). The man is a scar in Dominican Culture. El Chivo the Dominican Nero.
Like everywhere in the world, there are always far right groups, like there are people who worship Hitler in Europe and the people who worship Trump in the US
Que viva el jefe!
He did help the country financially, being the only president in its history to pay of all debts and keeping complete autonomy in DR and even made one of the most advanced armies in Latin America. Too bad he was a crazy SOB who in the end of its dictatorship was so paranoid even the U.S wanted him out of the picture.
Rafael Trujillo' grandson tried to run for president in 2020. They rejected his candidacy for his American citizenship. Rumor is he will try again in 2024. I don't how many supporters he has but has a decent amount.
Thank you so much for putting this part of the history of my country out there, so that people not familiar may know and even learn. My grandmother still remembers and tells us of the horrors she saw and heard, of living in fear every day during Trujillo's Regime.
I wish more western countries had more world history required. Yes, know your own country's and continent's histories, but know more than that.

That means a lot of world leaders Really know how to "rule".
Yeah Trump wishes he was El Jefe Trujillo.
Why bother with the hocus pocus when fear much easier yes messy and bloody but we see the tyrant deck out clean from head to toe never a drop of blood on them until in Trujillo case his bloody past caught up with him .
My great uncle was a bodyguard for Trujillo, he never really went into detail about what he had to do while working for trujillo, but we all know it was horrible. My great uncle lived down the road from Trujillo’s casa de caoba until he died a couple of years back.
My grandparents family members were tortured for 7+ years... there are stories that are best left untold

More then ever this sheds light on how far the the U.S can be willing to go to support its geopolitical goals. What a tragedy for the Dominican people. Sovereignty cannot exist under U.S occupation.
I mean, it's not only a US problem. E.g. Russia does the same today, supporting the likes of the sociopath Kadyrov of Chechnya. China does deals with corrupt African governments, no questions asked. Indeed, in my opinion, the US and the West in general, while not perfect, still represent the closest humanity has approached towards an egalitarian society. I say this as an African living abroad.
My birth place Haiti 🇭🇹 and the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 truly had it rough and It’s sad to hear
Woodrow Wilson was probably the worst president of the 20th century. His progressive ideas put too much power in the government's (and his) hands. This lead him to be heavy handed both at home and abroad.

Greetings from Dominican Republic ♥️
As a dominican I’ve been waiting for this video for years! Thanks a lot Biographics, now the world can see what we went through for so long
Dominican here, this is all incredibly accurate.
It is disheartening that some Dominicans think that someone like him should return to power in the nation.
Well, the DR has never been as prosperous as it was during his era.

I mean I agree with you because this man is a monster. But when you look at many of the modern architecture of the DR ( the monumento in Santiago, la pirámide en Valle nuevo, the capital building of the president) was shaped by him. You can say we were prosperous during that time as our economy was good and our military was one of the best but the man was a monster. I've never heard such an accurate introduction for this man. He was truly evil and yet, somehow, there are people that still consider that he was not that bad. Thank you for making this video, I truly believe that people need to remember the history so men like him don't get to positions of power again
And you probably still haven't. This character sensationalizes his topics too much and inserts his opinions too much in the topics to deliver a fair and truthful documentary.

My grandmother was raised in the same town Trujillo lived as a dictator, which is a town named San Cristobal. She told me everytime his car would drive through the city, everyone would have to stop, about face and salute him until his car drove away. My grandma was born in the 1930s.
This man is polarizing. Even though he managed to lead the country through what you can call a “golden age” ( low crime, no debt for the country, etc) he did more evil that still shapes the country to this day. The whole complexity of race comes from him. Many human rights violations, assassinations, and truly horrible things that still scar the Dominican citizens in and out of the diaspora. No amount of good he did could ever erase the evil he was.
It's the old "putting lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig.".
A dictator can do positive things. Hitler and the Nazis built the autobahn and many social projects, but the holocaust and WWII still happened.

nope
Can't believe they haven't yet but I feel like they have to after doing Trujillo
I literally just typed this same thing. It makes sense
As a Haitian I really don’t like papa Doc. Period
Great choice.
My grandfather , who was a soldier under him was eventually marked for death and had to go into hiding in some small village. They lived in fear and couldn’t go outside due to the large network of spies/snitches all throughout the country. The regime was known for making entire families disappear without a trace.
On my other side of the family, my grandmother had a miscarriage from the shear terror of the secret police arriving in front of their home. “Fortunately” for my family they didn’t come for them. But unfortunately , They came for one of their neighbors in the middle of the night and no one saw that family ever again.
After the tyrant was killed (only reason my grandfather and his kids lived) it wasn’t over yet.
Ramfis did round up all suspected people and tortured / slaughtered them. The Dominican military divided by allegiance went to war with each other (before the civil war of 1965)
One of my aunts recalls as a little girl running and hiding under the bed because she could literally hear the Air Force P51s shooting their machine guns above their house down at the Army tanks and bullets penetrating their roof.
And what most outsiders are not of aware of , is that Balaguer was a continuation of the dictator regime. Only difference was that we was more liberal , more geopolitically acceptable , and less blatant with his tyranny compared to Trujillo. But political rivals still got taken out and he ruled with a heavy hand.
Trujillo’s circle are not gone. Many of the elite classes that carry high level positions in many institutions and who are the wealthiest , are of that circle or at least descended from them.
Wow. 100%. This is the stuff my parents told us about. Horrible.
That makes sense as to why my grand father is so rich.. he’s been for the president ever since he was around 20 years old… so like around the 50-60s and he also went to war
And then, Ramfis killed himself in a car accident. I believe he was killed by the CIA but was killed without a trace

Great video ! I remember when I was a kid and I saw the mariposa sisters on the pesos I asked my older sister who they were and they explained the story to me their deaths changed the world.
People tend to forget that the hate between Dominican Republic and Haití is not just racism is history, for those who don’t know Dominican Republic was invaded by Haití in 1822 and it last 22 years with a strong militar regimen, Dominicans couldn’t even have proprieties and were rob of their lands, and also were rob of their culture and costumes and impone Haitians cultures. That is why the island is divided how it is know cuz actually before the invasion the island was divided in half. And their is still hate between SOME Dominicans and Haitians because in the schools in Haití they teach them our country is their country (this was said by Haitians not Dominicans) and sometimes there is even talks about a new invasion so of course SOME Dominicans feel threatened. (This is not the case for everyone). (just wanted to point out is not just racism) (and if u watch the video completely u will know why most of Dominicans (the older generation) are racists, even black people in this country are racist to themselves (the older generation).
We do forget that part. Good point.

As for those who praises such a tyrant Trujillo the epitome of Hitler who is praised worldly yes Trujillo on a much smaller scale.I have heard some stories on the treatment of Blacks, Haitian in particular so I take it was during his dictatorship.I know it has changed in the Dominican and life is not too bad for all.Its bad the Haitian got the worse part of that island what is it every other year they get a devastating earthquake putting more deeper in poverty.Haiti had a straight up mad man dictator Papa Doc Duvalier who ministered some of the same fear as Trujillo but Papa Doc added voo doo with his to die natural ,I m sure it's Haitian that praises both Papa and Baby.
lies, Haitian prejudice started when they attacked towns and DR during the 1800s. If your Dominican i suggest you watch documentaries created by Dominicans not Americans. Most Americans that are interested in Dominican culture, and history are very liberal and biased against us.
@@monso7871 cant forget the 22 year haitian occupation and the 12 years of war that followed
@@monso7871 wrong Dominican has being killed Haitian people for last 100 years.
@@vaughnreedjr6592 , As a Haitian, I could tell you between 1822 and 1844. We killed our fair share
My aunt has lived in the Dominican Republic since she married there. Still an extremely corrupt state. Definetely reccomend Vargas Llosa's LA FIESTA DEL CHIVO (FEAST OF THE GOAT)
Its called La fiesta del chivo (the feast of the goat).

Trujillo was an ashole like no other but La Fiesta del Chivo (the feast of the goat) is *NOT* an accurate historical record, is a novel and many characters in that novel are fictional, despite of depicting some historical events of the time.
Why you guys like to read stories to understand history.
Awesome video! Thank you so much for covering this!!
Thank you for this
Excellent.. as an 🇺🇸 of 🇭🇹 descent it’s good to know the histories of Kiskeya/Quisqeya
Trujillo’s Haitian grandmother was the daughter of a Frenchman and a mixed Mother; hence, his grandmother was a predominantly white person born in Haiti, a country were over 95% of the population is black and that by Haitian standards would be seen as a stereotypical Haitian. To level Trujillo as half or even a quarter Haitian is just plain grotesque.
Ahh yes I was waiting for this one! Great job Simon!
You should do the Canadian metis Gabriel Dumont. It's quite a story
Nah. I'd rather they do dictators, especially the tyrannical ones.
Very necessary video! Thank you for the clarity
Most tourists who go to the DR never leave their resort. Do yourself a favor and take a tour of the cities and the mountains. Particularly to the Haitian border. It will open your eyes to what true poverty in 2021 really is.
I was adopted from Haiti I really want to visit
Never go to Haiti like if that's your neighborhood, kidnappings are no joke in there
For anyone considering doing this. DONT unless u got a native dominican with u. It extremely dangerous
Ignore this guy, it is extremely dangerous to go out of the tourism zone.
this video was freakign fantastic!
