- Join me in a two part video as I explore New Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire - the inspiration for Dracula. In part one I walk around the castle, discover several exciting rooms and talk you through the history of the area. This castle is full of hidden corners to see and discover. It certainly is well worth a visit.

Were it here in the U.S., it would have safety barricades on every door and window. They would charge admission (entry AND parking) and there would be a Starbucks in the lobby. It's so cool that you have freedom of access.

A lot of castles you do have to pay but many of the ruined ones are free to access and explore. Such a shame there is no where like that in the U.S. They are great places to explore and pass a few hours.

Thank you Martin and yes, I also am aware of the Whitby story. Whitby is well known for its Dracula inspirations and rightly so as I know events etc happen around there to publicise it. I guess the authors connection with both places adds more mystery to the story behind the famous vampire.

Thank you 4 sharing this. Grandad was from Aberdeen. I had no idea about this history of the legend of Dracula. The castle is still beautiful 2 me. Born and raised in Canada my dream is to one day visit Scotland.

We can't have things like that on this side of the pond. Too many lawyers. We would have to have gates on all the open bits...especially that stairway to nowhere. Thanks for sharing this. I've got to make it to Scotland some day.
Such a shame. Have to say that it is a dangerous place if you're not careful but so nice to still have places like this that you can explore without admission fees of barriers.

Many comments about Whitby here, as far as I'm aware the book was written from an upper floor town house overlooking Whitby Abbey, however, this location Kim is at may well have been the initial inspiration. X

New Slains Castle is awesome but I've only been able to visit on a few occasions over the years. Old Slains Castle is pretty cool too.
Great subject matter Kim... I really enjoyed the adventure! It appears the structure has had upgrades done to it over the years, i.e., cement poured steps, brick walls & arches, etc. It looks like a place worth preserving before the elements ruin it completely. If at all possible, shore up the foundation & walls enough to build a roof over it that perhaps has that earlier era look to it from the 1920's or '30's. At a minimum, a new roof is in order & I praytell as one commenter mentioned it doesn't get turned into apartments! :-)
Yes, it would be shame if the apartments went ahead. I believe those plans were drawn up years ago but then we hit the economic downturn and they were unable to do it.
Great video Kim, not sure I would have gone up some of those narrow winding stairs! Looking forward to part 2.

Looking forward to next week already :D Although as someone from Yorkshire I must say Dracula was supposed to have been inspired when he stayed in Whitby watching the ships sail in to the harbour etc... They have guided tours around Whitby up to the Abbey and to the house where he stayed The goths hold special weekends twice a year to celebrate Dracula. However I am sure like with all historical things there are more places than one that inspired people and I am not for one minuet saying you have got your facts wrong . I loved this tour of the Castle it looks amazing thanks for sharing it Kim :D Teddy
Yes, I had a debate with someone from Yorkshire recently. They didn't believe Slains was an inspiration too. I guess as the author spent a lot of time at both places, he maybe took inspiration from both of them to make his character. The only difference is that down at Whitby its more well known due to the events etc that they put on. Who knows the true story of his inspiration but I guess...that makes Draculas story that little bit more intriguing :)
Yes I agree Kim none of us will ever know the full truth unless we could travel back in time and ask him :D and that Castle and the view has a look that could have definatly inspired him so I am glad you have shown us it and told us the story that surrounds it :D Teddy

Cruden Bay, which is near to Slains, and is where Stoker was sometimes writing the book, was the original setting for the ship to arrive in Britain. Cruden Bay was not well known and the location was changed to Whitby.

Such a magnificent place and you re right ,huge with so many surprises. I wonder ,do you maybe know why is it not restored to its blooming form? Such a waste if it s let to the weather ant time to deal with it.
What was down the stairs? The bit where you jumped down at the end of the video?? I went today and was too scared to jump down in case I couldn't hoist myself back up 😂 was hoping you'd have had some footage of that too. Great video, but please do let me know 😂

It's tempting to imagine the repair and renovation of more castles in Scotland (perhaps with the help of British lottery money..). Eilean Donan Castle (completed in the 1930's) was an almost total rebuild of the castle destroyed in 1715 by English frigate cannon fire, the largely intact but derelict and large Castle Menzies at Weem (close to Aberfeldy) was restored beginning in 1957; it was financed by worldwide descendants and friends of the Menzies of Culdares, and is now a magnificent example of authentic restoration. Where next, Kilchurn Castle adjacent to Loch Awe, Holyrood Abbey next to the palace, Carnban Castle in Glenlyon ...?
Fantastic video of one of my favorite places.
We have been to Slains castle many times. It has a certain atmosphere, especially at night. Is it haunted? We think it is The cellar in the old tower might have been used during a witch trial that was held at Slains. The Earl of Errol had to ask the Provost of Aberdeen for special permission to do this in 1698 as trials were normally held in Aberdeen. A young women was accused of spoiling the harvest by witchcraft. She was burned at the stake at Slains and possibly held in the cellar for questioning. The tower is the oldest building here, build on the foundations of an older structure earlier that year.
When we investigated here we caught some EVP's and my son was overwhelmed by feelings of sadness and dread to the point where he broke down in tears and had to carried out of the cellar as his legs gave way.
Also a few years ago a Lady jumped to her death inside the tower.
You might or might not belive in ghosts or the paranormal but our experiences there left us in little doubt that something is still there.
Thank you for this insight. I hadn't heard of these stories and they certainly add new character to the castle for me. All castles have their stories and there certainly is something to be said about how these events have created energy and hauntings. Very interesting indeed!
@@kimgrantphotography it is one of these things about old places. They always have stories to tell. Sometimes it takes months of research to find all the puzzle pieces.

Why was it not the coast of Aberdeenshire the ship crashes on to why was it Whitby. ?
i can only find slain as dracula castle going back to news article in 2007.

Haha if only I could do the bat thing! That would have been cool. Will have to make do with the Dracula modelling for now though haha!

Not been to Old Slains. I plan to walk along the shore from Collieston to it this year though 😃

What an amazing place. Such a pity its been left to go to ruin.
I was wondering how it was possible for such a grand building to totally deteriorate in less than a century, but, in the article connected to the photo in the link, it appears it was partly demolished back then…also, that it might be rebuilt in the future:
"In 1925 the Castle was abandoned and the roof was removed to avoid paying taxes. Valuable dressed stone was also taken away and the castle has been deteriorating ever since. It is now quite a surprise to see old photos of how grand Slains Castle used to look. However there are modern-day plans to convert the castle and grounds into 35 apartments."

I saw that apartment story. It was meant to happen many years ago before the recession but due to the money downturn, nothing came of it. It is all quite sad though.

I thought whitby inspired dracula...
7 minutes too long and far too many shots of walking around, and pans and tilts to nothing. There's nothing creepy. There's no hint of Dracula at all in this video. Just like a travelogue except you're not a traveller. A correct tile would be Castle Dracula or Dracula's Castle but since the eponymous villain is not there, it should really just be called Slains Castle.
