Wow, Barry. You remind me of a musician. Where all the audience sees in a professionally qualified musician that is capable of performng on stage with other exceptional musicians all versed in sight reading on the spot. What the audience does not see are all the hours and years of commitment made by these musicians to be able to make what they do appear effortless enough to where anyone can perceive they can do it. That is what I heard as I was watching you list all of the equipment you use to make a "natural" viewing experience. Amazing!!! Thanks again for all you do to make your channel a standard in video production that has a high shelf! You, my friend, are the weathered, sight reading chart musician I admire in a video production product! Cheers! Keep up the great work!

I'm cool with you having a Sponsor. What bothers me about a growing number of UA-camrs (not you), is that EVERY single product is great. When it isn't. It is like they are afraid to tell the truth because it might cost them a sponsor. You however seem to be the opposite, you have no problem calling out companies for shady crap, which is refreshing.
I have no issue with Softtube giving you the controller - you clearly love it and it works great for you - the important thing is that you are sincere and honest.

Amen to that Barry. I know people will say 'ignore the trolls' but the truth is it can really hurt sometimes. You have every right to get the rewards of your hard work. Just keep being you and I know you'll continue to go from strength to strength.

Interesting video Barry and it is good you addressed certain facets of what it takes to manage a UA-cam channel. The cost of camera equipment is not for the faint of heart nor the light of pockets, not to mention the time it takes to record.
I have followed your channel since the early days and honestly it did made me nervous when you decided to accept sponsorships, just keeping it 100. Reason being is most of us have seen where that ungodly path leads where suddenly every piece of equipment or plugin X is awesome and a game changer although it is absolutely rubbish. Not speaking for the trolls, because they suck, but objectively as a fellow traveler in music and a fan of the channel. What saddens me is the overwhelming majority of channels regarding gear and plugins are corporate shills from the largest channels to those who just starting out desiring to be in the position of larger channels. I have become cynical and make it rule not to believe anything from UA-camrs. My method is I check multiple forums (not gearsluts) , the comments section of multiple videos and feedback from retailers specifically Amazon to see what the general consensus is especially the 3 and 4 out of 5 star ratings along with the ratios. So far you appear to have held true to your original intentions and I hope it continues.
I was called a troll once. But not because I dragged somebody about making a video. Im just short, fat, and hairy. 😂

I’m a gen X and don’t envy UA-camrs. It’s a lot a stress and the reimbursement for quality work isn’t hardly justifiable without sponsors these days. If it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense… unless it’s purely for the love of it.

This is a generalized statement I know, but it’s not typically in a trolls nature to contribute to anyone or anything in any meaningful way. They just critique others hard work while having little or no accomplishments of their own to point to.

Barry, you rule!! Get paid and make it worth your while. You’ve more than earned that. But also have proven that you are genuine and have your audience’s best interest in mind. Trolls are silly and provide no value to anyone, while you’re over here working hard to provide value. That says it all right there.

I simply don`t see where taking sponsorship is anything bad. Nearly every artist, sports person and even politicians take sponsorships. This is supposed to be a win-win contract. You like us? We like you! Lets play together! Thats life and it is absolutely fine to my understanding.

Wow I didn't know trolling was a real problem for your channel. You know Joe Rogan says you should NEVER read the comments. But damn I love that you read the comments and often will respond. I hope you don't let the negative comments mess with your mental health. Try not to even read a comment if it looks like a troll. If I were you (not that I have any idea what I am talking about) I wouldn't even bother with overly critical comments. Unless ... if I had a video with lots of down votes. Then I would want to investigate.
This situation is no different to a contractor entering into a contract and way of working based on X and it turning into XYZ and you have to change the approach and make additional charges. You made a decision and statement about sponsorship when you started the channel, but reality has meant that decision and stance has had to change. Hell, you even said maybe you were a bit naive. What's the issue when you're up front about it and you are clear about when you have taken a sponsorship, or at least been given a product to review? Just like that contractor in the outside world has to make additional charges and they talk the customer through it. Keep on keeping on Barry.
UA-camrs are so sensitive these days. It's not a personal attack if someone disagrees with you or doesn't enjoy your content. No need for name calling.

Barry, you need to see things from the other perspective as well. People are put off by social media influencers because they can’t trust whether the review is genuine or motivated by money. Don’t take things too personal as long as your reviews remain genuine

I dig you man, but you got to stop making videos dedicated to your "haters". Make videos for the people who actually support you. No need for apologies or explanations, you do you, don't worry about it. However, choose wisely which crowd you would like to nourish.
Barry, you don't have to explain anything about money. It's none of anyone's business. Most trolls have no idea how many video takes and how much time going into a video, especially if there are many edits. Example...Pete Thorn. I love that guy, but many of his videos are a commercials on a music products and that's ok because we all love toys lol.

Love your channel Barry!!! Great content, even the rants!!! There's way too much "crap" out there and I, for one, don't want or need to watch another so called "expert" telling the world "you're doing it all wrong." When you listen to their content, it sounds like crap which pretty much really speaks to how much of an "expert" they really are... They're the ones who really need the trolls to tell them "Shut the Hell up!!!" We need more good quality content like yours and Rick Beato's and a handful of other great content providers!!! That interview Rick recently did with Bob Clearmountain was excellent!!! He asked Bob every question that every one of us in mixing music wants to know and will probably never have that opportunity to chat with Bob Clearmountain and ask those kinds of questions. Way to go Barry and Rick!!!

I completely understand where you are coming from. Look, I've done podcasts. I still like doing podcasts. I don't get alot of views. But that's not why I do it. I video the podcast with my phone. Because I don't have the money to do podcasts with all the lighting and camera's and such. I've followed you for a while now. And I think you are genuinely honest about the content that you are speaking on. But anyway you have my support. I am a fan of your channel. Thank you for everything.
I hate UA-cam more and more. I'm not using it anymore, sort of... I'm back to books and help from people I know. It's much better this way.

I really like your videos, but I really really hate the sponsorship / youtube thing. It's a plague. All is good if you're upfront about it (as you seem to be), but boy there are a LOT of bad players out there.
I’ve actually got video that I’ve made about that very subject. The hard-core reality of it is you simply cannot sustain a channel on UA-cam without being properly compensated for it. There is a tremendous amount of work and time that goes into it. And you simply don’t make any money off views. So if you’re gonna make any money, you have to do some type of sponsorship. my sponsorship is simply nothing more than a percent of the sale if you buy something. They have never, nor would I ever allow them to have any influence over my content.

But, they have to keep chasing their fix like a chain-smoker. You have taught me many things for which I am very grateful. I am using the same 43” monitor based on your recommendation. Also your TotalMix tutorials - much appreciated. Anyone who calls you a fanboy is either very young and naive (best case) or revealing their own arrested development (plenty of those guys in momma’s basement).
I was called a "troll" on this channel for asking for evidence of a scientific claim made by the host that flies in the face of all available data. So, take the term for what its worth.

I hate Peanut Butter. I could start a channel for my fellow Peanut Butter Haters. If I say that "to me, peanut butter tastes like sh*t". That's my opinion. If I say "peanut butter absolutely tastes just like sh*t!" That borders on a statement of fact, and the burden is upon me to substantiate my claim.
Honestly, while I don't always Agree with your opinions, you actually amongst the UA-camrs and Gearsluts out there are pretty damn good at disclaiming things as opinion rather than fact.
But we all have to be diligent.

I'll do a livestream right now discussing this and his previous video, if anyone wants to tell me how wrong I am. Like you, I am also a huge Barry Johns fan, so was quite taken aback with his seemingly unhinged response to my question.
@@BarryJohns Love the channel Barry but spending $11,000.00 on what is a locked off shot in 30 fps is total overkill. If you're using the kit for a varied professional business in different locations, maybe, but for UA-cam point to camera complete waste.
I use a Nikon D5100 £380.00, RØDE Lavalier II Premium Ultra-Low-Profile Lavalier £87.00, Zoom H1N £60.00, some Neewer lights £200.00 for room lighting and Manfrotto Element MII 4-Piece Aluminium Tripod £110.00.
I may break out the Shure SM7B with the DBX286 and Audient ID22 (£750.00 for all three items) if I want better sound. I use this kit for a large publishing house and it is ample. I think this lot cost me £1,600.00.
I'm certainly not trying to be a troll but there comes a point where you seem to be buying kit for the sake of buying kit. If you were producing professional recordings that have a final destination in the professional world I could understand but your gear aquisition seems to be more of a obsession to constantly acquire kit and then re-sell it - I've seen it before.
If it makes you happy great. But unless you're reviewing this kit and receiving substantial income from manufacturers I feel you may be suffering from Gear Acquisition Syndrome.
