Maynard was battling with the decision of disconnecting his mother from artificial ventilation, hence the powerful line: "gotta sever this umbilical residue, keeping me from killing you". basically, Maynard 'killed' his mom by disconnecting her. this is one of the toughest songs to hear from Maynard when you know the background. beautiful and sad.

This album, 'Mer de Noms' means 'Sea of Names'. Each song is written about someone Maynard knew. And while their heaviest album, this is also APC's most atmospheric album. You can't go wrong picking apart any song lyrics on this, each is so incredible and different.
Another fun fact about songs Maynard writes, whether for APC, Tool, or even Puscifer- the music is done first and then given to him. Maynard then creates lyrics for the music.

Went to my first APC concert last November and they played Orestes. I have NEVER cried at a concert, but the end bit “keeping me from killing you” ringing out in the arena as all the other instruments faded hit me like a punch in the gut. Powerful song and an experience I’ll always remember.

    • @batmankixass
      @batmankixass 6 років тому +5

Also, fun note about the band’s logo: it looks broken but it isn’t. It’s an optical illusion. If you look at the negative space of those two segments, it looks like a three dimensional ring. It’s a perfect metaphor for the band itself really. Their lyrical content is pretty dark (broken aspect of people) yet the melodies and instrumentation are often gorgeous (the beauty when you see the actual circle within the logo).

I absolutely love that you know the story of Orestes, Vin! I've always been annoyed that that was left out of the movie, even though I agree that it would've been a roughly 9 hour long movie if they'd included it haha.
This has always been my favorite APC song. I relate to it a different way than the mother/birth angle though. I've spent my entire life dealing with severe depression. The line "give me one more medicated peaceful moment" perfectly describes how I feel when I'm deep in that dark hole of my mind and how I medicated myself with one bad substance or another. And "gotta cut away, clear away, snip away and sever this umbilical residue, keeping me from killing you" I relate to in the way that depression is always a dark, hostile, yet strangely seductive voice in my ear telling me that I'm not good enough, that nothing I do will ever matter, and that I should just end everything and the fact that I wish so strongly to cut myself away from that but can't seem to find a way to and that I'm always searching for a way to "kill" that voice in my head. If that makes any kind of sense at all. In a way this song resonates with me in the sense that there's a part of me that I wish I could kill and all the good things I wish I could be are trapped inside a mental cage, screaming to be released.
Damn ya'll get me to write walls of text haha. Anyway, I loved listening to you guys discuss one of my favorite songs of all time. Cheers!
    -Jason

    Love the channel!
I’m pretty sure that out of the songs on the Mer De Noms album, the lyrics for this one weren’t written by Maynard, but it was actually done by Billy Howerdel, because there was a demo version of this song before Maynard came into this project. Originally there was a female singer who recorded a demo of this with the same lyrics. I think the band was named from the lyrics of this song as well.

Hello, great analysis. Some points. 1. Orestes was about his mother, but also the birth and death cycle, the Ouroboros. He realized he was, like the snake, consuming himself by being angry. 2. The song follows Judith on Mer de Noms, and it is part of where the band's name comes from (the other part being that the band is a super group with revolving members but they come together to make something whole). 3. There is a term "kill the buddha" which basically means to take your ideas and perceptions of something and destroy that. Only then can you truly see what it is. By "destroying" the "idea of Mom" he was able to understand and see Judith Marie for who and what she was. This song is about anger but not hatred. It's about changing from one cycle to another. That's why the tempo changes from slow to fast as his resolve builds to the eventual realization that he must "cut away, clear away" this idea of mother so that they could have a better relationship.

Vin I like your honesty as well. I am glad you guys are true to yourselves rather than pandering to an audience. A Perfect Circle is more of a rock band than Tool. It's straight up verse chorus. Both bands are great, but they definitely are not for everyone. A Perfect Circle is kind of a rock super group made up of bands from the alternative scene. The guitarist is Billy, its his and Maynards band, he used to do tech work for Tool. The drummer, Josh Freese, is an amazing drummer, he mostly does studio work. I wouldn't say he is as good as Danny but he is probably more dynamic in the styles he chooses to play. He has recorded drums on dozens of albums for some of the biggest pop and rock bands. You guys should check out The Doomed by A Perfect CIrcle, it came out this year. Take a look at what Maynards up to today.

What I love about that album is it goes from all angles, "Pet" being the drugs perspective itself, "The Outsider" people that look down on addicts and don't really understand it from the users perspective, "The Noose" about someone overcoming addiction and feeling too high and mighty about it that the person looks at his/her past mistakes while using being somebody else's, "A Stranger" being about a part of you that wants you to keep using, that voice that makes it tempting, that voice that never goes away.

To misquote Douglas Adams it's the 5th song in the trilogy. Clutch - Profits Of Doom or D.C. Sound Attack.

I really should take more time to look into song meanings. Loved this one for a while now but never actually knew what the title meant until just now. So thanks for that guys!

I’m most impressed that you recall Greek literature from memory. +1 for classicism.

“The Doomed” A Perfect Circle has a twist lyrically on the Beatitudes. How easy it is to look down upon the sacrifices it takes to follow them, and just do what you feel.

Billy Howerdale wrote this song. You should listen to the demo of him singing it. It’s one of the demos he was working on when him and Maynard were roommates love the videos!!!

I can agree with you on the harmonizing any time APC releases an album I think it's better than their last and fall in love (aside from emotive). The only thing is that when I go back to listen to their older stuff it usually does not age well or resonate with me at my current state. Where as tool if I go back certain songs take on whole new meaning for me so I think lyrically tool has way more complex or multi layered lyrical metaphors. You should review some songs from Eat the Elephant - Disillusioned or So Long and Thanks for all the fish both are really straight forward and kind of to the point (which is one example of APC being a bit less complex).
