Northern Soul Dancing - Do I Love You (Frank Wilson)

- Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of Black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo (100 bpm and above) or American soul music from northern cities such as Detroit, Chicago and others.
The term "northern soul" emanated from the record shop Soul City in Covent Garden, London, which was run by the soul music collector Dave Godin. It was first publicly used in Godin's weekly column in Blues & Soul magazine in June 1970. In a 2002 interview with Chris Hunt of Mojo magazine, Godin said he had first come up with the term in 1968, to help employees at Soul City differentiate the more modern funkier sounds from the smoother. Godin referred to the latter's requests as "northern soul":
"They wanted the stuff that was more obscure, more underground, more northern soul."
The northern soul movement was characterized by its love of rare soul records, often released on small independent labels. These records were often difficult to find, and collectors would travel long distances to attend all-nighters at clubs where they could hear them played. The movement also had its own distinctive dance style, which involved a lot of acrobatic moves and spins.
Northern soul reached its peak of popularity in the mid-1970s, but it has continued to have a following ever since. There are still regular all-nighters held in clubs across the UK, and the music continues to be released on new compilations. Northern soul has also influenced other genres of music, such as disco and house.
Here are some of the most famous northern soul clubs:
The Twisted Wheel (Manchester)
The Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent)
The Wigan Casino (Wigan)
The Blackpool Mecca (Blackpool)
Some of the most famous northern soul records include:
"The Sound of Philadelphia" by The Moments
"Hold On, I'm Coming" by Sam & Dave
"Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" by The Spinners
"The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" by The Marvelettes
"Reach Out I'll Be There" by The Four Tops
Northern soul is a unique and vibrant music and dance movement that has had a lasting impact on British culture. It is a subculture that is characterized by its love of rare soul records, its distinctive dance style, and its sense of community.

Back in the 1960's I was stationed in Britain. Off base there was one girl that spoke a different way from the other local girls. Somehow we got together and one week she invited me to go up to her parents with her. That weekend she took me to a northern soul venue. The music blew me away. I told her "I loved this British music". What she replied dumbfounded me! "This is your music. American black music".
She bought me 5 records and when I got back to base everybody wanted to hear them, but nobody had ever heard them before. Well we got married and came back to live in America. But she's never forgot northern soul. Whenever we have barbeques she plays and dances to the music. Our neighbours all join in and dance as well.
Our children have grown up knowing northern soul and now our grandchildren are learning about part of American history that is sadly forgot too. Its still a joy to watch (and join in with) my wife when she dances (a little slower now) to northern soul, but the smile on her face when certain records are played is wonderful to see. She's back in her 20's.
Lovely stuff.
At one time in my life I worked as a music journalist.
This is one of the finest anecdotes I have ever heard concerning music.
Respect and love to you both.
There were some romantic films about the Northern Soul movement, about 12 years ago. I wish I could remember their names. Anyway- she might like them. Also check out an artist called Duffy. She did a modern version of Northern Soul. Great dancers on that youtube video.
That’s a lovely story. ❤
That story has gladdened my ❤️
I used to be one of the in crowd at the all nighters back in the 70s take benzadrex inhaler a chew as fast as you could and spin around on the dance floor felt great. everyone in awe of us 😅
I am dancing in this vid at 52 seconds (red waistcoat) at the back, didn't want my mum to see me !
Gold!! They looked like amazing times.
@@mybestoldmusicvideo Yes, petrol was 25p a gallon, family loaf of bread was 30p, the skirt I'm wearing cost me £3 to make; no shops sold "northern soul" clothes, they were made to order. No alcohol was sold, no food, just soft drinks and dancing - alot of legal drugs of course used illegally, usually script stuff: 10 blueys for £1. You can see why Wigan was shut down, no commercial entities made any money from it
OH MY GOD.. I remember my nights dancing at Wigan Casino..they were EPIC.. my oxford bags trousers and plaid cheese cloth tie top.. Fantastic music..a fantastic era..I'm 61 with severe osteoarthritis..can just about walk now but by god I have fantastic memories and in my mind I could still do it..maybe not walk for a week afterwards but I'd enjoy it.. I'm so glad that Kelvin Fletcher danced northern soul to this very song on strictly and showed a lot of people who didn't have a clue what it was..my mom wouldn't let me go..so i used to stay at a friends and she never knew we used to go to the casino..happy days..young and with my future ahead of me..a fantastic era..
@Kinmarie Van-Ever hey there!! I'm sorry about your situation, though man, if you can sway, snap your fingers, use any part of your body because yes I hear in your heart, moving enough to refresh your mind body and soul that you will move as best as you can, you not one to sit on the sidelines. I've been in a funk over oh a year maybe, I have this rare disorder that effects my muscles, "Stiff Person Syndrome"m, it's low level and have it for 30yrs and yeah I can walk with a rollator(walker with wheels) so I can get out and yet I was down - saw my doc and he was all, "wow, look at you your moving good" and I was, for me, just standing up from the chair etc. All, I know I love this Northern Soul, I'm 73 years old, was a singer in groups, (my voice, ugh, lol though I've been singing into my phone and posting on Facebook) I don't care that it's not in the shape it used to be and I am going to work on that, like you with your dancing..and boy, this is where we are, on youtube listening to great music. Your story of your younger daring dancing days brought a smile, thank you. Whatever we can move, let's move.See ya on the dance floor ~ 👍🏾💖☮
@@marysalvi242 Hi Mary..thank you for your lovely reply..you too undeterred having the music and memories inside without being able to actually do it anymore.. but hey wasn't it good when we could.. i love music. All music..pop..r&b..Motown..Philly.. classic..jazz..ska..but to dance to you can't beat Northern Soul. . Loved skimming across the floor.. yes i know it's a good day when i can stand up without my knees clicking and giving way..I too suffer from depression..not because of my illness but just various life experiences..but my family keep me going.. I'm unable to work now so my time is used for knitting and crocheting for neo natal hats and blankets and for a yearly shoebox appeal which sends very under privileged children little games or the hats and scarves which i knit..i also foster and rehabilitate abused and neglected cats and get them to trust us again so they can get their furever home. . So I keep busy my own way..i find that keeping my hands and mind busy helps my mood.

I'm nearly 60 and have danced to everything, but nothing beats Northern Soul.
Totally agree love ❤ northern know all the words makes you feel good. Love Jan York
You said it i still dance each and every day makes me feel good in this crazy world
I'm 65 just love northern soul ,just makes me feel young again.
I'm nearly 60 too and nothing beats EDM. Still raving whenever I get the opportunity with no shame just pure love for where the beats take me.
Im 68 born in rugby northern soul engrained you will never beat it
As a London lad, I was introduced to Northern Soul from blokes I met when I joined the Army. The clothing we wore was more or less the same - I had a CRACKING pair of grey two tone flares with a FIVE button waistband and THREE BELTS, spade toed shoes etc..
When I first saw Northern soul dancing done by some blokes at a ‘disco’ in Andover Hampshire, I was totally blown away. The lads who did it told me I should go up north with them on leave and see whole dance halls doing it. I did and I was hooked. I spent almost all of my money on records and clobber when I was on leave. Wish I could still do it all now (65 and not as nimble!) The excitement of going out was just incredible, and if
Spot on from an x london firefighter segrigation is disintergration ha krank it up n smile
Im 74 now these videos make smile and more than that make me feel good , so much harmless self-esteem and expression, what happened? I doubt if anyone was carrying a knife! The only thing in their pockets was their hard earned wages ! But they also carried smiles ! Stay safe UK 🇬🇧
60’s and 70’s, The best days, no other decade comes closer.
Agree ❤
Agreed even tho.i was born in.1990 ive watched a lot of old time videos and.it sets my soul on fire. I wish things could go back but will.never happen its life oh well glad you got to enjoy it tho at least someone did
Totally agree!
Just pure joy - wish it was like that nowadays - we had the best time in the seventies .
Well said 👏 👌
I was born too late remember my big brother going from Llandudno with his mates I missed out there
this nostalgia is not good. please find some way to move whatever your disability.there are people out there older than you and dancing. and fit.of course the body gets issues but I also feel that people collude in their own ageing too and it starts with the media and other people telling them what they can and cant do.find new ways to move
What about Rave/Baggy 88-92.... Now that changed the world...second summer of love
You simply can’t beat this music. Tempo, happiness, people dancing 😄 I’m only 33 but I’ve been listening to this music all my life, glad my parents did though 😁
When people all came together for the love of the same music , wonderful ❤️
Don't forget the gear
Great and just been re-released by Bruce Springstein and sounds just as good. This was when people just wanted to dance to the music shared by all, everyone enjoying themselves. No one appears to be carrying the latest fashion accessory that seems the in thing today .... A knife !!! the only reason they carry one is because they are weak, Bring back Northern soul / Motown thumbs up if you agree ... I thank you
Agree, Springsteen did the song proud.
Well i think he shud leave well alone. He,s not near as good
Sorry... not AS good.
Good, but not AS good.
Simply the greatest northern soul song ever
Frank Wilson also co-wrote Stoned Love and Up the Ladder to the roof for the Supremes. I challenge anyone to keep their bodies still to this beat. Mr Wilson was a very talented man, indeed. Thanks for sharing Roy, you are a star.
Excellent comment. I didn’t know all that. Thanks
My wonderful Mom died June 2019 aged 93. Every month at our church youth club in the West Midlands she would help at the door ushering the teenagers into the Church Hall.
The DJ would play all Northern Soul Music and my Mom would get on that dance floor. She just loved this genre of music and i remember when she came home she always had a smile on her face telling me and my dad what a good time she would have.
🙏🙏🤍
Bless her ❤
Wow! I would have loved this. Nice clothes, nice, shoes, no phones! Just dancing!
Spot on from billericay dicky
Do it!!
Great tune! This was escapism for those teenagers in the 70’s. I was one them, get on the dance floor and let the music take you to another place! Do I love you, Yes I do.
i totally agree i was one of those teenagers every Saturday Nite midnight
awaiting for the doors to open
I'm in this vid, at 51 seconds, red waistcoat, behind the front dancers
@@anotherblonde 😊 halve way through the night a change of clothes, I didn’t have to worry about weight in those days! My knees aren’t so good after all the 😅😅gymnastics! Lol
@@richardwhite5139 I changed clothes in the morning to get rid of the acrid tabacco smell, the sweat and the dripping condensation from the ceiling. I dance to 3 Northern tracks every day from my YT playlist. Back in 1973/4, I worked with a lad, name of Pete a good kid. He would tell me about the all nighters he used to go to at The Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes. He really loved them, it's taken 50 year's but now I get it! WOW! Just watched Northern soul at the proms Brilliant, what's left to say only KTF!!!!
Just great to see so many young people uninhibited, expressing themselves. The music is magic, my mum was from Wigan so I’ve always felt a sort of connection. I hope the current generation can engage somehow…
Hi Andy, most of the people came from all over the Uk, I’m from the midlands, went to the Mecca ballroom Blackpool first, then on to Wigan for rest of the night. 😊
@@richardwhite5139 that’s great Richard, I was at college in Stourbridge so I know the midlands a bit, lovely people 😊
@@andyhawkins642 Hi Andy, I’m not to far away from Stourbridge, I live in Walsall.
Funny, how you can dance like this, and get far more out of it than alcohol or drugs. It energises you, lifts you up, and you get a great workout at the same time! Because dancing, another form of physical exercise, gets the chemicals called endorphins in the body, going, which makes you feel so good. Better than any drug - and free! 💖💖
@@susandumbill8805hi Andy
What a fantastic cultural artform, the North's own, I hope it will be sustained by the next generation!
Some superb dance moves
Im a young 68 and i still dance around my kitchen
I met my husband at Wigan Casino what an amazing place it was the music was epic and what an atmosphere. This music took me back. Personally I prefer Tamla Motown but each to their own. They used to have live artist on also. We saw Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, The Elgins The Fantasics to name just a few. Great times no drugs very few drunks no knives very little swearing. 70s era and music brilliant, some of the rock was pretty good.
This invigorating, wonderful music, along with the fantastic Tamra Motown sound, makes mosh, rap and other current trends totally insignificant. 70’s music will never die out.
Old person yells at cloud. What the hell is mosh, and did you just call rap music a modern trend but then say 70’s music will never die out? It literally started in the 70’s.
@Nathan Wilson this was a mere.comment and I make no apologies for it.
I was working on a surgical ward in Billinge Hospital and remember a great lad called Alan (B) who was admitted after a dance move at the all nighter wrecked his knee cartilage. Hope you’re still dancing Alan 👍🏻
Happy, happy days................where have the years gone .
@Frank Robinson have fun. that's what this 60 year old Scot did every Fortnight at The Casino! still can't dance, but it's the Casino, who cares?!
They are in our memories..I'm 61 and travelled up by coach with a friend from Worcester.. fantastic nights..
The Brits could really dance back then. Brilliant foot work and those 360's bloody great !!
A lot of people think it's easy but it is quite difficult..there are so many different moves my personal favourite was twisting the feet back and forth whilst moving in a line then doing 360 turn... everyone was different and that was good..you used to see a move then go home and practice it for the following week..my mom used to shout upstairs what are you bloody doing 🤣🇬🇧💞 great times..
Brit dance culture was a given for beginning Northern Soul. Only US Appalachian, Ozark, Scottish hillbilly culture and black Gullah Geechee had the jig buck(heavy step) flatfoot(pre-tap softshoe) variants from earlier British Invasions and African.
Some bring a jar of talc to sprinkle on the floor. 🕺
Can't help wishing I'd been born ten years earlier than I was so I could be on this fantastic looking and sounding scene
Those were the days - when people could freely enjoy themselves 👍🏻❤️
Ppl still can if they remove the box created in their own mind

Awww my baby brother and his mate began travelling up to Wigan Casino when they were young teens. My brother was still going in the UK and abroad to Weekenders until recently and has just become unwell. He has a vast Northern Soul collection of vinyl and its still a massive part of his life. He's just turned 66 x 🥰

Great comment Joe.
Your correct we did this all night long in the 70's
I missed it. I was at art school in Liverpool in the early 70s. Dancing was the last thing we thought of apart from Friday night discos. But now I dance, salsa, ballroom and Northern Soul. That's the best!
I was stationed in German in the 70s in the Brit army , odd weekends i travelled back to the UK via Calais and Dover then up the m1 and m6 north to wigan, in the 60s it was room at the top later the Casino , as i watched this vid the girl at the start , the blonde at 015 i recognise her she was also stationed in Bielefeld a Geordie lass who worked in the commcen Signal Centre
Started going to casino when I was 15 only because my older brothers Kevin and Raymond was working there as Door men, brilliant place
Those were the days ...none has ever come close since! 1969...through 70s...
My first all nighter was in Morecambe Bay, Easter 1983. Myself and my 2 pals travelled over from Ireland on the ferry, spent a sleepless night at crew station to wait for the train to Morecambe. Ah the memories. ❤
Brings back memories of northern soul night at the Palais Nottingham
And not a tattoo in sight - how refreshing. I smiled all the way through this - fab footage.
What’s wrong with a tattoo?
Ignorant that like.
agree with you hate Tatts my husband has an eagle on his chest I hate it make him keep it covered
Have to disagree with you there. But definitely agree with your taste of music.
What difference does a tattoo make? Doesn't change the dancer or music
No booze but plenty smoke n Lou reed. Fantastic 🔥👏
What great dance and fun, great days.

Love to move back in the day
I’m 70 year old been there and done it back in 1973 keep the faith still ❤
Simply beautiful!!
So many great memories, remb these days very well,I miss them northern soul forever
Northern Soul was a natural, spontaneous happening between a culture with a folk dance culture and reacting to music from somewhere else. I reacted similarly in DC area US, 1964, 12 years old. 1973 in Torquay I met "scottish" carpenters, just northern, Newcastle, close. My ancestors are from Glencairn and Dumfries. Keeping time with feet is in common with Scota. Now, NS in common with shuffle, trance, moonwalk et al. After dance parties age 13-14, exploring this, I was ridiculed for this style in high school, and later, age 15+. Now I can learn northern soul footwork from youtube at age 69.
Bob get to bed zzzzzzzzzzzz
@@lydiawilson3789 I danced lot in my late teens and twenties, since then I've pretty much continuously done either dance, Tai Chi, Yoga or Pilates classes. (I had to really, as a way to manage chronic asthma.) I'm 61 now and I feel almost as agile as in my twenties. If Bob continued with some sort of stomatic practises then I see no reason why he shouldn't dance in his 60s.
Makes me proud to come from Wigan
This kind of thing get talked about as if it disappeared and left us standing, but really I think it is 'we' that moved on and away, as is the norm; the music still exists.
Happy days dancing in swanssa .don't do nights like this anymore .very happy times
Feels like that was yesterday! Wonderful memories and the body can’t help but move when you watch and hear Northern Soul. 🙏🏼😉💚
@Johanna E right? If your not moving even if just a bit (some people have health issues) then try a sway, a nod of the head, the body remembers what your soul does, enjoy everyone in any way you can. Boy, this is so cool. I'm from the un-united states and grew up in 50's, my cousin and I fell in love with the Beatles...omg, being black the Beatles just didn'[t take where we lived, say, like the Righteous Brothers, so we met two girls in H.S. who were white and I laugh because they were "weird" ?? ::sigh:: human beings, we're a strange species hey. Well, we got into music, one gal fell in love and went down that path, and now my cousin has passed away, so it's my spirit "sisters" and myself, still here, 73 yrs old loving our grandkids and music!! Been missing going to a fave place because of covid and it was a historic dive - someone bought the place, so we'll see, if live music Monday - Sunday will still be happening. Hope so, meanwhile, I'm here and dancing around..Johanna, I told some one else, "see ya around the dance floor" : ) ☮💃🏾
What a great song. What great dancing.

We wore all those fashions in Coventry in the 70's and I don't think a single one of us had the faintest idea what Northern Soul was . We got badly made Oxford Bags , Spoon shoes and jumpers with three stars on them from the first Sunday Markets . I was more interested in Mike Oldfield than Soul music .
Love this song and all northern soul 💖👌
I can't wait to get here in September for the 50th anniversary!!!
Brings back great memories
Wow does this take me back I was brought up in wigan just watching these old films of wigan and northern soul it's totally different from the wigan I once new I live in Ramsgate kent now but i would do it all again tomorrow
