Yo, I still get hyped up from the opening and closing song. This was the best cartoon ever!!!! I never missed an episode because each day was an actual day in the show too. No re-runs just an epic 365 day journey.

there's a more recent reboot called Space Battleship Yamato 2199, tho they use the original japanese version's names and whatnot if you're interested it's what got me into this series in the first place and i think you'd like it
Early 2000s I was a wee lad watching this with my dad. We stopped watching it cause it spooked me. About 5 years later I couldn’t stop thinking about the show and searched everywhere until finding it on Hulu and started binging. I was at the start of season 2 when Hulu pulled it and I was pretty upset by it. A few years later I learned about 2199 and desperately wanted to watch it but sadly it’s stuck to crunchyroll and I refuse to pay for another streaming service. Almost 10 years later I found the manga for 2199 and am now reading it. Starblazers is fricken awesome!
Channel 56 Boston had 2 shows that influenced my childhood in the 70s : Star Blazers and Creature Double Feature (Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra, etc) Then I got hooked on the Dollars Trilogy and learned much later in life it was based on Akira Kurosawa's Yogimbo starring Toshiro Mifune. Also The Magnificent Seven based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai Then I stumbled on the anime movie Akira and now watch anime and read manga. Meanwhile, my Marvel comics collection grows dust and anything from Disney is like watching a dog taking a dump on a crowded city sidewalk. Just avert the eyes and avoid the piles.
Yes, it was "Voyager Entertainment" back in the early '80's. But being 3-6 years old I didn't understand it, just wanted the good guys to win with the big guns. :D
This is the first time I've seen voice credits listed. We have since learned the voice of Eager was by Partrick W. Lohn for the original Star Blazers series.

Great series. I love the opening and closing. Unfortunately, the ending isn't the same I grew up when I watched it. I still remember at the ending, there were the Argo, then the Earth in it's dying stages, the back side of the ship, the dog fight at the Rainbow Star Galaxy, and the Argo leaving dying Earth.
I've seen the original Japanese version, and I don't know what they're saying, but I think our theme song is better than Space Battleship Yamato. The Japanese version could give children nightmares. But I loved this series... a great memory from my childhood.
Try Kisssanime, they have the whole series [including the original Japanese version plus the films]. If you like the Yamato aka Star Blazers movies I highly recommend the 2199 series, it's every bit as good as the original Anime [if not better]. Stay away from 2202 though because that season was hot garbage.
The Yamato was mentioned in the first episode of "Star Blazers", and yes, the scene where it shows the IJN Battleship Yamato being sunk by American aircraft. And in the closing credits, it says SB was based on "Space Cruiser Yamato", so obviously the producers were aware of the show's origins. I can't say why they wanted to rename the ship "Argo", but it's possible they didn't want to offend anyone who still remembered the war. But I knew :)
Its amusing to think that this Classic Anime was renamed for distribution to the Western World because its original Title was thought politically incorrect due to perceived reference to a WW2 battleship and that... the... ...I can't even try to guess the stupidity and reasoning behind whomever was concerned enough to censor the work of another for some ridiculous prejudice still lingering from an event that happened almost 80 years ago...somebody or some others need to move on and get a grip!
Well, "Space Cruiser Yamato" (or a reference to Yamato in general) wouldn't have had the same significance to anybody outside of Japan. Plus they were probably trying to find a title that played off the then-popularity of Star Wars.

2:03 Back then 'Leiji Matsumoto' name was romanized as 'Reiji'.
According to the Hepburn romanizing System, Reiji is absolutely correct.
