Would be cool to know the times after 5 or 6 laps to compare durability. So maybe laps 2-4 compared to 6-8 for each tire.

Currently running the Khumo V730 and there is a couple people at the local autocross who are running them currently. Something that I think is worth mentioning is that the V730 gets faster after a few track uses. The outside tread blocks have a extremely shallow tread pattern that is only 2/32 deep. After you wear those out you essentially have a set of street legal cheater slicks with only 2 groves to evacuate water. Once you factor in the price, and overall performance throughout the life of the tire the V730 is the winner in my book. RT660 is faster out of the box but the V730 is better overall.
Have to keep in mind a lot of tires get a little faster after they're worn down a little. Grassroots motorsports mentioned this with the RT 660 during their tests. Would be interesting to see a test between all the tires after a few weekends and see which ones benefit the most.

I would be curious to see how much better these track focused tires would be than an ordinary summer tire like the PS4S or PZ4.
PS4S is not really suitable for track use. It’ll overheat and start to chunk.

@@RoadrunGTI I had to find that out myself. People say it's ok to track but it's not. Mine are chunking to the wire after my first ever track weekend.
According to the commentary there were 3 or 4 tires that were "designed" for (or have a reputation for) longevity. What was the starting and ending tread depths? On all 4 corners, but especially on that outside left front?

I experienced what was mentioned on the Nexen on my Integra at a recent track day, it caught me off guard on my first track session and I nearly overshot a corner due to the weird delay that I didn't experience on my previous tires at the same track (RE71r, RT660, Rival). It didn't feel natural at first, but somehow I ended up driving faster overall once I got used to it. Need to see how it feels at more events.

Great video. I think it would be really interesting to have a reference max performance summer as part of the test for 2023 just to understand how much of a difference "extreme" type tires make vs "max performance." Michelin PSS5, Bridgestone Potenza Sport or Conti ECS 02 would all be good options.

I wish they still rated or ranked road manners even though this is an extreme tire category, I’d like to know how these tires ranked in road manners amongst each other as the A052 I believe when they used to also give those subjective ratings was actually a viable dual use tire that had much better ride and noise comfort in this group but that test was old and don’t know how these new entries stack up.
Would love to see a budget performance tire comparison. Personally I can't justify 1000+ in tires every oil change. 😅
this is what im dealing with rn. got some falken 615 a month ago, three track days later, they're done. my oil lasted longer.
Could the problem with the Advan's be the fact that the BRZ doesn't have enough power?

No one ever measures how long do they last. At least you could try measuring tread depth before and after to try to quantify wear.
I race in budget endurance racing. Some teams can afford to show up with, and totally use up two sets of the stickiest tires. We can't. We want the best tires that will last until the checkered flag on sunday. But other than asking around there is no way to know.

Hopefully mounting my RE-71RS tires on my STI today, these results make me very excited! I was leaning towards the RT660, but with the current rebate on the Potenzas they were much closer in price than I expected (about $100). I ran a set of RE-71s a few years ago and loved them, so I have high hopes for the RE-71RS.

I'd like to see the same thing done with ultra high performance all season tires. I think it would be interesting. Also I think it'd be nice to have one comprehensive test for each category rather than a bunch of mini-tests like you have now.

There’s really no point in even attempting an all-season tire on a dry track. It’ll just destroy the tire.

They (Tire Rack) do not sell Federals at all, so I would not expect them to ever include any in any testing carried out by them. 😉
They only very recently picked up the ONE single model of Nankang's (MANY!) track/autocross capable tires (the CRS V2), and most likely ONLY because of customer inquiries/demand.
What were cold/hot pressures for these tests? I would assume stock pressures for the car but that'd be too high for every tyre in this test...? Advan 052 does want more camber but also even judging by tyre flex and contact patch in the video on such a light car, less pressure. No mention on rear camber? Stock I presume since it's not changable without bolts/control arm, still good to know angle which would aid in understanding some tyres understeer characteristics. Great video aside from no pressure info mainly! :)
Did you guys go back to the Bridgestone Potenzas at the end to make sure they were still the quickest? This would rule out brake degradation, driver fatigue, etc... from the results if the Bridgestone can back it up by doing it last after setting the fastest lap when running first.
What I heard here was get the Bridgestone to go fast or buy the Continental if steering response and feel is the main priority.

Back in 1993, my Nissan NX2000 came from the factory with RE71s. They were amazing back then and the new RSs appear to be as well.

I'll give you a data point. RT 660's on my Miata really bring out the fun for my daily commute. For commuting the ZIII's were the most fun! I feel like they have a wider operating temperature and a more progressive break away. When I'm doing an HPDE on the 660's I have to re-calibrate my level of expectation for grip! Awesome tire, very similar to the RE-71's I had on before that.
What temps are you dailying the 660s through?
Every tire was set to 35 psi hot.
Only one of these tires had the sizes I wanted for my e92m3. 275/35/18 front on 18x10, 295/35/18 rear on 18x11. Just so happens it was the re-71rs. Lucky me.

Love the rt660s. Haven’t tried the Re71RS yet. But the rt660 lasted a bit longer and were just as fast as the RE71R. Good match for my cayman R for track days.

I do love the RT615k+ as a street tire for my 996. It only gets used for spirited drives, and they wear well for a 200tw. Your description fits what I feel too.

What did you run for tire pressures? With my RE-71RS's, I run 30/28 F/R for autocross.
Great question! We ran them all at the factory inflation pressure of 35psi.
A lot of us are finding the Goodyear Supercar3 to be a very nice track tire. Would be great to see it and the Nankangs added to the test group!

Thanks for the kind words! We haven’t performed a track test that isolates temperature as a variable yet. It’s something interesting for us to think about for the future, though.

How exactly do tires change a car's balance, like cause a car to understeer or oversteer? I would've thought the grip level difference between f&r would've been the same across different tires, but I guess I would be wrong. Trying to understand, thanks! @tirerack
Why are the lap times suspect? I'm assuming you ran the old Turn 10 as there is no way that BRZ is doing 1:36 laps at Gingerman! Also, next time test some Track specific tires against these: Like Toyo Proxes, Yokohama ADVAN and Hoosier for a better baseline.

Excellent information. Would have like of seen a category for wear and how each tire looked after the test and projected life. I am currently running 315 RT660 for autocross but would like to get into HPDE. I only have one other set of wheels to use for HPDE (18x10 wheel) so the tire will have to pull double duty. I replace my autocross set every year and hoping I can find a track tire that will last around 10k miles and 3-5 track days a year on a 3300lb Mustang.

I would like the website to bring back the sort by position rating in the category... You used to have it where someone would have to jump through one hoop in order to get it to sort but it seems like that option is gone...

Even though the RS was fastest, gotta feelin a lot of people will pick the RT660 over it, cuz they can flip the tires if needed for longer life..people also look at price.. its time and long life in the math with price.. long life means cheaper in the long run

Not worth flipping the RT660. I only got 4 days out of a set on an NA first gen BRZ and I had them flipped after 2.

So the A052 test pretty much confirms the suspension geometry of the 86 sucks.
McPherson strut front so no camber curve.

Good eye! Those are the Moda MD27, which is the wheel we use for all our 17” tests.

Great stuff, I do suggest you include the tire size(s) and wheel specs. In this case I can Google it if I really care (I'm guessing 215/40R17 on 7") but it's important info to have.

Stock wheel is 17x7.5.
If you look at 1:53, you can see they're running a 225/40R18. I'm not sure about the wheel spec, but I think that's a Sparco DRS in 18x8 +45. Going for a 225 tyre on a 8J wheel would make sense since, quote "225 on the 8" wheel felt the most balanced, like that's what it was designed from the very beginning" from their tire width vs rim size test released a few days ago (also using BRZ's)
If Kumho offered their V730 in a 215/40-17, they'd be on my wheels as we speak!
But of course, they never will. 😡
No PS4S? How does that make sense?
The PS4S is like 340TW and not even in the same league as these tires.
Sad that most of these are not available in Europe :/
But then you get many, MANY more choices, in MANY more sizes over on that side of the pond in great/sticky/responsive 300 tread wear, summer MAX and UHP tires than we will ever be offered here. 😉☹

Wow the Michelin Cup 2 was near dead last in objective testing. That's why this test was great because opinion-based reviews just aren't enough.

This is a great test, but frankly, you're using it on a single platform which is a low power, lightweight platform. It really doesn't take into account other platforms, such as FWD, AWD, or higher powered RWD cars. I realize that would make prices go up on doing these tests, but frankly I don't believe this test helps anyone but miata, 944, and toyobaru owners.

I readily admit I could be wrong about tire dynamics with heavier cars / different power levels, staggered setups etc, but I've always been curious about that as from what I understand, tire compositions and tread patterns can sometimes differ between sizes even within same tire model (is that correct?)

The R888R is a 100 tread wear tire, as is the ancient, and minimal size choice RA-1.
Their R1R is so old I am surprised it is still in production! (It does look like it was/is a great rain tire though! 👍)
@@nofascistsonmywatch they actually brought the ra1 back i read due to popularity even. I has ra1 and love.. never seen r1r and never drove 888s.. the ra1s were better in the rain than I expected but I'm only counting very careful street driving.. I even drove them in snow a bit once although a dented rim shows how well that went lol..
As a racing time attack driver this data isn't helpful. Impossible to test in one day. The track changes too much. In my car at the head of the field i can be 1.5 second different from session to session due to 5 to 10 degree temp swing. Then have the track match pace at session 4 as it did 2nd sometimes and not others. This needs a very unique testing methods
