  • An adorable three-year-old girl is to be given a bravery award after she made a heart-warming 999 call to save her pregnant mum's life. Cute Emma spotted her pregnant mum Catherine unconscious at the bottom of the stairs in their home and instantly jumped into action. The brave girl called 999, gave her address, and explained her mum had fallen down the stairs with "a baby in her tummy". But unflappable Emma calmly explained her mum was not bleeding, had banged her head and even checked the door was unlocked for the crews.

    I think the call handler is a star too. The way she kept switching between asking medical stuff and casual chat to keep Emma engaged was a big part of what enabled the child to be so clear and calm.

      Sadly, we are going to need clear headed emergency call handlers in the growing crisis: I wonder how many toddlers will need to call 999 / 912 / 112 etc for their parents in April and May 2020?

      Poppet is certainly unusual from my side of the Atlantic (Nova Scotia) but I've been binging on 999 calls and several of the UK dispatchers have used it! I only know it from its use in Voodoo charms which I came across in a book on the Salem Witch trials. It is definitely sweet.

      I dont know which is more risky for them, A mom with a kid or a pregnant mom.

    • @QemeH
      @QemeH 4 роки тому +43

      @@SirZeck Definitively the mom with a kid.
      1) The injuries of the mom don't change weather she had a baby inside her or on her arm. (If anything, she can't catch herself with a baby, but that's speculation.)
      2) A toddler falling down the stairs and hitting hard on the floor and/or the steps is likely to sustain fractures and maybe even a concussion, both of which can be severly life-threatening, especially when combined with a moderate bleeding as small children don't have as much reserve as adults have - a fetus inside the mother on the other hand is perfectly cushioned inside a bubble of water that acts like an airbag, you'd have to fall in a very particular way to either injure the fetus or injure the mother in a way that would neccessitate an emergency c-section.
      So, if you ask me as a paramedic, what I would prefer to attend, it's definitively "pregnant woman fell down stairs" over "woman with toddler fell down stairs".
      (Also, a sidenote: There is no crying to be heard on the tapes. Which is a VERY bad sign for a toddler that fell down the stairs. Dispatch most likely feared the kid to be near death or dead already until she realised it wasn't a baby at all, but rather an unborn fetus.)

    • @SirZeck
      @SirZeck 4 роки тому +20

      @@QemeH Thank you for the very clear explanation,I thought if a pregnant woman falls or hit the belly then it's always end up in miscarriage and if the mother dies the baby inside is gonna die too. (Movies gave me this mindset xD)
      But yours seems more likely the case in real life situation.
      Happy New Year,Wish you the best of luck!

    • @QemeH
      @QemeH 4 роки тому +17

      @@SirZeck You're welcome :) It's unfortunate how wrong movies get facts about pregnancy and medicine in general sometimes...
      It's definitively not a given fact that every fall of a pregnant woman results in a miscarriage. On the contrary are pregnant women more prone to falling than women of the same age who are not pregnant, because of the new center of gravity and hormonal circulatory problems (fainting, etc.). If all these women would loose their babies, we'd talk about padding mothers in a protective shell all day. After a serious fall - and this mother was in and out of consciousness it seems - it is still very much advisable to have a gynaecologist check on your baby with an ultrasound to make sure. If, however, you can't see either clear fluid (not urin!) or larger amounts of blood come out, the baby is probably fine. It won't break anything if the fluid sac is still intact.
      The thing about the baby dying if the mother dies is kinda true - if you don't do anything. But there is a procedure, called "emergency c-section", that can deliver a baby by surgical means even if it's not fully developed. From the 24th week of pregnancy onwards the baby has a reasonable chance of survival. So even if the mother in this case was beyond saving, we'd take her to the hospital as fast as we could for them to perform that c-section if at all possible.
      [Sidenote: The emergency sectio is also performed in the reverse case where the baby is already beyond saving but the mother is in danger. An example for this might be a premature placental seperation, if the baby is already cut of from the blood - and therefore oxygen - supply, but now the mother is bleeding critically in her uterus and out her vagina. In this case you need to get the (dead) baby out to save the mother. It is another myth that this is a decision on whom to save; this is almost never the case as it's almost always to save one from being "dragged down" with the other.]
      But I need to emphazise again: These are very rare scenarios - much, much less likely than a toddler having a life-threatening injury after falling down a full flight of stairs and being dead silent after...

    • @MsJubjubbird
      @MsJubjubbird 4 роки тому +3

      @@SirZeck Turns out she went into premature labour- but they gave her drugs and managed to delay it. I mean it is viable to have a kid nearly two months premature but it doesn't work out every time and if the womb is safe it is better for the baby to stay there instead of an incubator.

      3275Dan in lots of european countries a snake represents medicine.. pharmacies have them as the logo as well I guess the poison was used in early medicine or something ??

      Posted on Dec. 15, 2017: *It's the only snake I am not afraid of* By the way, I love Latin. It's my favorite ancient language. Lingua favorita antica. Latin is the only reason (besides that I'm an Anglophile) that I used to read the HP books. *Those* snakes scared me witless, "scarimus maximus" even though it's fictional. I stopped reading Harry Potter books a few years ago, though. Because of all the violence in the world lately. But I digress. The Asclepius snake is the only snake I am not scared of.
      I like medical terminology, because of Latin. "The Good Doctor" is my favorite show.
      *To Emma's mum: Congratulations on the new baby! Happy Christmas to all of you*
