I love how bakugo's guilt is kinda this plot twist for a most people because a lot of people just reduced him down to the angry rival so the reveal that he feels guilty shattered their preconceptions and I love stuff like this when writing turns characters into people

I really appreciated it cause it opened up that he has so much more depth than a lot of us realized he had. I didn't really care for bakuko that much mainly because it felt like he was rather abusive towards deku, but this showing of his introspection and the new found respect both these kids gained for each other changed my mind about him.

Bakugou kept saying "why did you lose?" because deku inherited one for all from All Might, the hero who always won. So bakugou expects deku, "the chosen one" to live up to that. You can say he was dissapointed with deku for not winning.

Believe it or not, Aizawa is more active at night. That means both hero work and revising teaching plans. The man's a machine, burning the midnight oil. That's why he's so lethargic whenever we see him, and why he has such a low profile as a Pro Hero despite being so good at it. Also, it's why he's so animated while he's scolding Deku and Bakugou after their fight; he's fully-awake and fresh as a daisy!

"But I focused too much on your physical strength, and overlooked what was important. [..] sometimes I forget that you’re children."
THIS! That's what he needed to hear.
To the general public he's known for being a victim but nobody really cares about how he almost died while pro heroes were standing around him doing nothing. The only reason he stayed alive for so long was bacause of his own explosions and still nobody moved until Deku jumped in.
Or you know how he got kidnapped by a bunch of villains... Instead everyone in his life always assumed that he's going to be fine no matter what because he's Bakugou Katsuki.
Right after the sludge villain incident when the pro heros started praising him for his quirk and telling him how he should join their agencies in the future instead of asking if he's fine or when he was a preschooler and got attacked by kids who were much older than him and he had to defend himself and the only thing that he got to hear was how of course he beat them since he's Kacchan!
Or even in the short prequel chapters when he runs after a dangerous villain and Deku is the only one who runs after him while his other friends don't get it because once again he's Bakugou Katsuki, so why should they be worried?
It's kinda messed up how people around him never took into account to make sure he knows it's okay to be vulnerable and feel weak sometimes to the point that when someone (Deku) actually showed him concern and care, he thought he was being made fun of.
Also remember how his mom said it was his fault for getting kidnapped and that he was weak for it? Yeah. Also he really needed that hug, it was shortlived but a big step to get over his emotional constipation.

"working it out in the most bakugou way ever of, let's battle and then i'm gonna cry during the battle" yeah, pretty much, lol. i definitely feel like i've known people, specifically guys, like that in real life. ive definitely seen guys try to vent or even suppress their emotions using aggression and various masculine posturing techniques but eventually whatever you're feeling is just gonna come out whether you're ready for it or not. bakugou's definitely a lot more sensitive than he wants other people to believe.

    • @KurNorock
      @KurNorock 2 роки тому +2

Don't call that weak behavior masculine. There is nothing masculine about being aggressive and posturing for emotional reasons.
Masculinity is about controlling your emotions rather than allowing them to control you. And controlling your emotions is not the same as suppressing them, and not suppressing them is not the same as expressing them. Stoicism is masculine. Men are stoic.
Men do not process emotions the same as women. Men don't need to express their emotions or allow them to "come out".
Recognize your emotions. Think about them. Feel them. Process them. But do not allow them to control your behavior, and definitely don't use them as an excuse for lashing out or doing something stupid.
Bakugo wasn't being emotional when he challenged Midoriya to the fight. He didn't "explode" a bunch of bottled up emotions. He was calm and rational. He made a plan and carried it out.

    • @vlad5042
      @vlad5042 2 роки тому +8

@@KurNorock i mean, i wasn't so much suggesting that the posturing *is* masculine so much as it usually, in my opinion, seems to be motivated by an attempt to appear masculine, and an idea that bottling up or even lashing out at others is more masculine than honest emotional expression. i'd also argue your definition of masculinity seems kinda arbitrary. i've most certainly known men who do in fact benefit from expressing or venting their emotions, as well as women who prefer to keep them to themselves and work them out on their own, even if on average you may be right that women are more prone to the need to express their feelings. "men are stoic" is most definitely a generalization as well, and i think the idea of not allowing emotions to control your behavior is most often a fantasy, when used by either men or women, and more often it seems to me like people instead choose to seek out rationalizations for behaviors that are, in fact, driven mostly by their emotions.
as for lashing out at others out of emotion, i mean that's kind of bakugou's whole deal in the early parts of the series, isn't it? this episode is one of many steps he takes to process his emotions in a more healthy way, but at this point his process still involves fighting with deku, with the difference being that now he's challenging deku to a duel basically between equals rather than beating down someone physically weaker than he is. i think its debatable whether or not bakugou consciously intended to spill his guts about his fear of inferiority and guilt about all might to deku when he challenged him to the fight. either way i would definitely not describe bakugou as stoic, but i'm not sure if that's what you were even trying to say or if this is all just a response to my use of the word masculine. i think you do have a fair point when you say bakugou did have rational reasons for wanting to have this confrontation with deku. i *also* think it's nonsense to say he wasn't acting emotionally. i'm not sure what part of screaming "why?!" and then breaking down into tears says "not acting out of emotion". as for it not being "an explosion of bottled up emotions", i dont even know what to say because that seems pretty literally like what it is to me, i mean it's a moment of emotional catharsis literally represented by an explosion fight, complete with deku noting in narration that they were finally talking about how they really felt after years of avoiding it, and how he only begins to engage with the fight when he realizes this is a way for bakugou to express and work through his turmoil. i mean, how am i meant to understand bakugou's "i try not to think about it, but i can't get it out of my head, it keeps playing on loop, so what am i supposed to do?!" other than an admission of trying and failing to bottle up his feelings until this eventual moment of raw and honest expression to another person? i'm personally of the belief that reason and emotion not only can coexist but sort of have to by nature bc no matter what someone says, every human has emotions and they are going to factor into your decisions to some capacity. either way, i doubt bakugou expected to lay his feelings so bare during the fight, and i dont think he had really acknowledged that at least part of what he wanted out of the fight was a resolution to his emotional turmoil and a reconciliation with the reality of the situation with himself, deku, and all might ("that's not what i wanted to hear", makes you wonder what he did want to hear, or at least what he told himself he wanted to hear). being able to honestly confront your emotions, feel them, process them, and not allow them to rule your behavior in destructive ways seems more a facet of maturity than masculinity to me. and for someone like bakugou it seems less about learning to not need to express your emotions and more about learning to express them in productive ways instead of having a complete meltdown whenever they reach a boiling point like he does over and over in the beginning of the series. sorry for the meandering response, i'm bad at coherency and brevity in comment threads but i hope you understand what i mean in any case.

@@vlad5042 Of course it is a generalization. Everything is a generalization. Nothing is ever literally "all" of a population. But so what?
I can say "Men are stronger than women." And you can cry about that being a generalization all you want, but it is still like 99% accurate.
As far as men being stoic, that USED to be very accurate and apply to the vast majority of men. And men who were not stoic were seen as strange, and possibly dangerous. But a few decades of ideological subversion has convinced men that they need to act like women, so men in general have become less stoic. But that doesn't mean that is how men are supposed to be. Men are supposed to be stoic. It is how we evolved. When a sabertooth cat came into the cave and the women and children were freaking out, it was up to the man to control his emotions, pick up his spear, make a plan, and get to work protecting the family.
A man who is not stoic is not a man. He is a child in a man's body.

I love how this show sets up Bakugo's feelings of guilt, and yet I've never seen anyone guess it in advance!!
A lot of Bakugo's actions and interactions past Camino have an extra layer of depth to them, in hindsight. The episode where All Might visits Bakugo's parents, and the scene where Bakugo yells at professional victims to save themselves, in particular.
I really like how Deku, Bakugo, and All Might all level up here. Deku gets physically stronger, Bakugo gets emotionally stronger, and All Might finally drops his hero persona in front of Bakugo, and becomes the teacher and mentor Bakugo really needs. Bakugo can always sniff out a false persona, and he doesn't respect pompous platitudes.
Also, don't forget that All Might isn't the only pro hero attached to Bakugo that got hurt at Camino. Best Jeanist got hit hard, too, and he WAS the hero Bakugo chose to learm from. Would bet Bakugo has been feeling guilty over that, too.

You're point at 15:26 is interesting because I think you said something similar in regards to Zuko. He had an image of himself and how the world worked, and how he ended up setting a very specific goal to regain the HONOR he thought he lost. He was right about his asperations for the throne and his HONOR, but we see that his narrow-minded idea of what that would look like led him down the path that, on some level, he always knew was wrong. Because of that, achieving that dream only made things worse for him. It's funny how the driving force for pretty much all the characters in the show is setting goals and persevering through them, but it clearly demonstrates the pitfalls that can come with that sort of mindset, mainly with Todoroki and Iida.
It's funny that while Todoroki has a lot of the superficial parallels to Zuko, the more I think about it, Bakugo might have more in common with him. At least in how their journeys start out.

    • @AGoodwinTV
      @AGoodwinTV  2 роки тому +12

I think this kind of thing comes up a lot for good reason. Fundamentally I think there's this idea of what something actually is vs. how we identify it. In the case of Zuko and Bakugo, there is what they actually need and who they actually can become vs. a story they've become attached to.
The good news for Zuko and Bakugo and anyone else with an incomplete vision is that AT LEAST there's a vision that gets them going and puts them out into the world and makes them work hard. That usually is enough of a starting point and then life and experience sort of take care of the rest. The real shame would be them just thinking about what they could be and never moving 1 step closer to their incomplete visions.

One thing that I like about this fight is that the conclusion isn't so cut and dry. Bakugo losing this fight would have only reaffirmed to him that the reason why he fell behind Deku and "caused" All Might to retire was because he was simply weak. That's why he was so perplexed when he still won and kept asking Deku why. It just made it all the more clear that there was more than strength when it came to being a hero. This episode had me in tears the first time I watched it (and all the other times as well lmao) because I felt so much for Bakugou. It was a great exploration of his character and feelings towards himself, Deku and All Might too. The things that hit me the most about this episode are when he asks if the way he admired AM and what he did to become better was wrong, the guilt he felt about AM's retirement and when he gets angry when Deku loses the fight (which he didn't expect obviously, because Deku has AM's power and in Bakugou's mind that means he should be unbeatable).
I was very surprised myself when Bakugou "won" the fight, but it was kinda satisfying in a way. If we really think about it, Bakugou has been taking Ls left and right the whole series (the sludge villain, the first combat training fight with Deku, the "half-assed" win at the sports festival, the whole kidnapping fiasco). [I wrote this comment out ahead of time in a txt file because I knew I would have some things to say about this one]
I LOVE the way Horikoshi takes time to think about how each individual character interprets events based on what information they specifically have access to. This moment from Bakugo and the moment with Froppy 10-ish episodes ago both created absolutely fantastic scenes because it's just a real human moment even beyond what you typically see from characters in fiction.
It's a lot to keep track of what characters know what information at what times as opposed to the audience, so to not only be aware of that information but to then filter it through that character's mindset, and insert the repercussions of their thoughts organically into the story is a big part of what makes My Hero special to me.

Not just regarding big moments but all the little ways that the students feel human and alive. The kids are all friends but they have different cliques within the class of people they regularly hang out with, they act differently around certain other students, they rub off on one another (not sure if we've gotten to this point yet but Kaminari eventually starts to call Bakugo "Kacchan", the childhood nickname Deku uses). It feels like a real class of kids, and none of this is ever given special attention, it's just happening in the background. Relationships develop, students get over emotional roadblocks, cliques change over time, all not relevant to the main plot but that's what makes it unique and special to me.
It's my favorite piece of entertainment and though I can't discern exactly why this is the only series that I'm constantly rewatching, I think the humanity/realness of the characters is a huge part of it. They hardly feel like characters in the sense I'm used to, it's almost like they occupy the same space in my brain used for real people I know.

I definitely think it is the characters that really give the show life, and not just the main characters but the ensemble cast. You DO get to know the students and their relationships and their idiosyncracies and gifts etc. I think that's why it's not just the action episodes that work so well but the slice of life ones as well.

This episode is the opposite of the Deku v Todoroki fight. In the sports festival Deku was the only one to notice that something was wrong with Shoto and pushed down his walls to have a moral victory despite losing. Here its different Deku failed to notice that anything was wrong with Bakugo until it was too late. Both Deku and the League of Villians misjudged Bakugo and by extension we (the audience) misjudged Bakugo. In the end Bakugo shared his feelings to only Deku and the fight was therapeutic for both of them and at the same time pointless. In the end Bakugo winning doesn't make him feel any better nor does it give him closure or answers. Bakugo thought that if Deku is worthy of All Might's power than he should win but he doesn't. Leaving Bakugo with the why. However the fight needed to happen and these two now have laid their emotions on the table and now some much needed healing and understanding can take place.
I love this episode so much, great action/spectical, voice acting was raw and emotional, and lastly this is a 3 season payoff for Bakugo's character arc. Easily a top 5 episode in my opinion!!!!

One interesting thing about the Izuku and Bakugo relationship growing up, and why I think Izuku developed such a reverence for him: we've seen that Izuku's father seems to be kind of ambiguously 'not around' in some sense (the writer has indicated that he works overseas, which is kinda vague) so Izuku was lacking a figure like that in his life. Of course he idolized All Might, but that's something distant, not someone he knows at the time. Kacchan was the closest thing he had to a male role model to take after, which works well because he even _reminds_ him of All Might in some ways. Chasing after Bakugo is literally how Izuku learned to be a man.
I love how good Bakugo's guilt about Camino is at sneaking up on the audience. Semblance of Sanity are probably the only people I've seen who called it. You just don't think about it, so it's a great reveal. And putting it halfway through the fight like that is such good pacing.
The flash move was Stun Grenade, he's used it a few times. It's how he beat Tokoyami in the Sports Festival.

Back when the series first began I hated Bakugo and thought he was just another unreasonably angry rival/bully character towards the main protagonist. But after Season 1 you see his character slowly develop until we reach this moment. This was where I started really liking the guy. Yeah, he's hotblooded and a tad irrational, but he's also human. It only makes sense that he would place all the blame on himself after what had happened and that in turn would cause him a lot of internal grief, especially when it happened to his childhood hero. I'm kind of hoping come the end of the series both Deku and Bakugo can maybe somehow share the top spot as a sort of team.

This was the episode that really changed things for me, at least in regards to Bakugou. I didn't like his character at all up until this point, dismissing him as a generic bully/rival character and a bad one at that. He did tell Deku to kill himself in the first episode. However, this episode really slapped me in the face for having those assumptions, giving me a harsh reminder. Bakugou is a child. 15 years old! He has fears, insecurities, and he's still growing and learning. He's made mistakes, and he'll make plenty more as he grows and finds where he fits in the world.
I think Horikoshi (creator of mha) did a brilliant writing technique here by making us feel the same as Deku and All Might. We were so absorbed with the licensing exam and the drama of All for One etc that we either forgot or dismissed how Bakugou must've been feeling. We didn't spare a thought for him after his kidnapping because, well, it was Bakugou! We thought he'd be fine because he'd never showed any overt signs otherwise. So when he reveals what's truly been going on in his head (the guilt, the fear, the self-hatred), we are just as shocked as Deku who was under the same assumptions we were. Horikoshi masterfully shows us that Bakugou is more than anger, shouting, and insults. He is a 3-diminsional person, with emotions and issues just like anyone else, who isn't even fully grown yet! We've got a long way to go before Bakugou goes pro (in more than a hero sense), and now I'm excited to follow along on his journey.
This episode alone shot Bakugou up into my top ten, where he hadn't even been close too since the series began. He's remained there ever since, steadily getting higher. Especially once I started reading the manga. While he'll never be my number one (Aizawa has that spot locked down), I came to understand and appreciate him in an entirely different light.
ua-cam.com/video/DFrE5EEiqyo/v-deo.html This video is a fantastic character study of Bakugou which explains way better than I could, so I highly recommend.
    Cheers to that aggressive Pomeranian!

This fight is my second favorite moment concerning Deku and Bakugo's relationship in the entire series (the first is a Manga spoiler). I won't go into detail about all the reasons because your commentary and the comments pretty much covered everything I love about it and why it's so beautifully done. But I will say that this episode has my absolute favorite line that Deku's said to Bakugo "All Might was my hero, but you were the one actually in my life!" and I feel like it usually gets lost with everything else that's happening with the fight and Bakugo's breakdown. Their relationship is so unbelievably complex and so are their feelings concerning one another and I love what you said about Bakugo running away from Deku.
Also, one small gripe about the end credit scene. For the manga, it's actually Bakugo that initiates the conversation about Deku's shoot style. I don't know what the reasoning behind the change was when adapting it for the anime, but I think it's an important distinction that it was Bakugo who offered the advice instead of Deku seeking it.

I have seen a lot of people react to that line "I destroyed All Might. Its MY FAULT he lost his power" and none of them were ever prepared for those words to come out of Bakugou's mouth. You can see the switch flip in all of them as they suddenly realize how much Bakugou has been affected and how he hadnt been really acting like himself since Kamino. So many people go into this episode thinking "Yeah Deku vs Bakgou Round 2!!" and then this happens and they all go "Oh no, this is a very sad kid"

One of my favorite episodes. Bakugo truly wants to have it all. He wants a superiority complex AND an inferiority complex. Like you said, Bakugo really needs self honesty, because all he knows is extremes. Either I'm the best or I'm the worst. If Deku is sticking around, he MUST think he's better than me, right? Maybe that's a byproduct of being an All Might fan. All Might as a pro is the definition of extreme, or Plus Ultra

And you got *everything* I was hoping you'd take away from this and it honestly just feels really great. Bakugo is genuinely one of my favorite characters of all time and I genuinely love his story--and this episode, as you said, is such a turning point.
I also noticed that you picked up on something that I was only aware of subconsciously until recently and that's Bakugo's need to run from Deku. How he makes himself purposefully unaware of Deku's qualities so he doesn't have to notice what he lacks. Because the image Bakugo portrays is as someone who faces everything head-on and always comes out on top so a lot of people (myself included for the most part) tend to overlook this crucial piece of his character. And once again you pinpointed it immediately.

I view the first 3 seasons of MHA as the story of Deku and Bakugo both in their own ways trying to be like All Might. Deku represents All Might's compasion/empathy for others and self sacrificing nature to safe everyone at all costs. Bakugo represents All Mights Power/defeat evil at all cost mentality.
Indoor combat traing Deku loses the fight but wins the exercise. Sports festival empathizes with Shinso while respecting him as an opponent. Wins the ideological battle with Shoto thus saving his soul and setting him on the right path but losing the physical fight to prove a point. This caused a chain of events with Shoto seeing his Mom, interning with his Dad in Hosu City to fight stain using both ice/fire, helping Ida the same way Deku helped him etc... Finally culminating in Deku saving Kota/defeating Muscular on his own, saving Bakugo and getting his license. Losing the fight to Bakugo but winning the ideological battle.
Bakugo on the other hand wins the fight with Deku but losses the exercise. Essentially does what All Might asked of Deku and proclaimed that "I am here" by winning the Sports festival. However views it as a hollow victory because Shoto didn't go all out. Gets captured by villians and misjudged to be like them and rescued by Deku and as a result All Might lost his powers. Fails License test (while Deku didn't) and figures out Deku was given All Might's quirk. Which culminates in Bakugo venting all his emotions to Deku. Winning the fight but losing the ideological battle.
Have I mentioned I love this episode haha 😄

Most bullies bully people because of the power and dominance that comes with it. According to deku,a hero who can't save people is worthless.
According to bakugo ,a hero who loses is worthless.
Even though deku's thought process is close ,wining is also necessary for a hero.
Yall saw deku screaming when he couldn't save bakugo.
Thats the same feeling bakugo gets when he can't win.
Its even portrayed when their younger selves watch in tv,deku watches allmight saving people and katsuki watches allmight wining against 4 guys.
Throughout his childhood bakugo was praised for having talent and good quirk when deku was looked down by everyone. That made katsuki think that you need to be strong and not loose or else you are trash. Allmight gave izuku ofa because he knows deku has got the heart of a hero and we all know but katsuki doesn't know it till now.Katsuki thinks the hero who needs help from others is worthless thats why he gete pissed when deku tried to help him.Katsuki can't even understand what is a heart of a hero even means. His dictionary is completely different bt this fight and the aftermath changed it.Bruh 10/10 character. He gets even better. But some people are obvious to katsuki changing slowly and then saying he is a bad character. It's really sad.

The amount you touched upon "dreams" and "the ideal self vs the real self" reminded me of how much the topic is touched upon in Berserk (no, I wont stop mentioning it). Were one of the, if not the second, main major characters in the story (both manga and show) is the embodiment of of dreams giving purpose and when the goal of reaching the ideal self completely consume and skews the actual self. Of course, not to say that's their only character trait/ message/ lesson. I like how it's not a niche subject either because it's touched upon in MHA as well as Berserk.

It comes up quite frequently in shows, and I think that's no accident. A big part of hero stories is rising to challenges and gaining self-understanding in the process. And part of that kind of growth will often be sacrificing what you think things are for what they actually could be.

I’m kinda salty about how that fight turned out. But I’m still happy about too. Idk. Conflicted. But hopefully they get a friendly rematch.
    Goku and vegeta style
(Dragon ball z is like the only anime I watched until recently, please forgive me)

Just realized Bakugo's use of "loser" kinda has a double meaning considering his obsession with winning.

Like I had said before Goodwin, I was waiting for this. Sometimes fighting is good for situations among men and young men, as long as it’s not a fight to the death and with certain honor in place, not saying I’m an honorable ass person but u know what I mean. Like, at certain points in time, talking doesn’t do everything and at certain times violence doesn’t do everything. So the fact that bakugo wants to fight allows him to release his feelings non verbally and when he has his need to speak because pummeling deku isn’t hitting for him. Idk that’s how I see it. Cuz I’ve been in fights that it didn’t matter that I lost but the fight itself solved the issue. Among men, it’s like fighting is a contract where it’s like it doesn’t matter who wins or loses because anybody has the potential to beat anybody at any time, petty win or not cheap shot or not but after this scuffle this dispute is over. Provoking me or if I provoke you will only cause further conflict

21:35 Yes!! I’ve been thinking that too since around this point I’m the show. (At some point in S3, probably around the 1st half - mid-point of the season.)

Technically bakugou is a big reason deku became all mights successor if he hadn't gone to save him from the sludge monster he wouldn't have motivated all might to take action

Anime is amazing. Kacchan’s guilt brought hot tears to my eyes. This silly little show has more going for it than most actual dramas.

This and the Muscular fights are tied for best fight for me. So glad you caught a good chunk of the weight that this one held. I know it will be a minute before you see the next movie but can't wait for the commentary on that one. Also, will you reupload the commentary for the 1st movie or is there a link to where you may have reposted i.e. vimeo or something?
