BMW R1300GS vs R1250GS test and comparison - what is DSA and why you need it.

- BMW R1300GS vs R1250GS (GS 1300 Trophy, GS 1300 Triple Black, GS 1300 Option 719 Tramuntana) in this direct side by side test / review and comparison which took place over 3 days, I have had the opportunity to compare the outgoing R1250GS Rallye (my own bike) with the new R1300GS in its base Light White option, but it was fully loaded with almost all the optional extras available in the catalogue.
Sadly, the weather was not brilliant during these 3 days of testing (constant rain and wet roads) but this gave me an ideal opportunity to really see just how good this new R1300GS really is, used in real world condition that “us” GS owners normally ride our motorbikes.
Simply put, it’s an amazing motorbike that has really improved over the out going R1250GS which many of us own and ride… and I really like it !
I highly recommend going to your local BMW dealership and booking a test ride. Just make sure the dealership you use FULLY understands all the options and accessories and packs that can be fitted / ordered so that YOU have the best chance of ordering the perfect motorbike, in the right configuration for your riding requirements.
This is just Part 1 of a new series of episodes that will cover all the new aspects of the new design along with in-depth technical reviews explaining the new technologies and especially how YOU can get the best from your new R1300GS.
If you have any questions, just leave me a comment and I will reply…
Hopefully you enjoy the content I create, so by Subscribing you are letting me know, that you appreciate the effort and time I invest in creating these episodes, and it also helps to grow and develop the channel.
Best Wishes, Carl

My beloved 18yo K1200GT has reached the end of its life with me as an owner and I hope that will find a good home to go to.
After I watched your video, I placed an order for the 1300GS almost immediately and I can't wait to get it and start adventuring again. The very BEST video I have ever watched, well done!!
Hi George, thank you for your feedback and I hope you enjoy your new R1300GS when it arrives 👍
Best wishes Carl
One of the best video comparisons of the R1300GS and R1250GS. Have a R1300GS on order and have watched a LOT of videos. This one of the best, so thanks for all the work you've done to put this together. I know it's not easy.
Hello Scott, Good evening and congratulations on your order which version have you chosen?
And thank you for your feedback, more to come in January when hopefully the weather is dry.
Kindest regards Carl
@@justthewayitis Ordered the green 719 version. May need to wait a while as the initial USA orders are built on spec. I want the black forged wheels, not the gold ones.
Nice combination, the forged wheels are the ones to have 👍 and the green does look very nice too. Hope you don’t have to wait too long.
Best comparison on You Tube. Thanks for taking the time to film, edit and post. Great stuff. My 1250 will have to do for a bit longer.
Hi Woodster, thank you, and yes it does take time to put these episodes together. Just like you… my 1250 has a long road ahead of it, best wishes Carl
Amazing review of the new GS, you explained it very well mate, being an owner of a 1250 made you able to run a very accurate comparison and I could feel the joy in in your voice while explaining the new improvement like the gearbox and the quick shifter. Thanks for the informative video.
Hello and welcome
Glad you enjoyed it, and well spotted, I was certainly very impressed and tried not to be to "over excited" about it, I will keep my 1250 for now, but the 1300 is an amazing bike and if i didn't have my 2021/22 GS I would buy one in an instant... its that good.
Kind Regards
Carl
Fabulous commentary. I also salute you for taking the time for the detailed and informative review around the improvements and shortcomings. Bravo.
Thank you 🙏
Your very welcome
Carl
Brilliant video with the most comprehensive coverage with excellent explanation of everything. Thank you and well done!
Hi Sia, thank you 🙏 glad you enjoyed the episode.
Regards Carl
Really insightful and well-thought-out presentation. Very useful for me as I have just ordered one!! Great work keep it coming, mate 👍
Hi Subman, you will have to come back and let us know what you think once it arrives
👍 Carl
Thanks for another well produced video, great information as always. It's refreshing to hear relevant opinions from an owner of the previous generation bike too, vs the standard spiel served up by professional journalists. My 1250 is less than a year old so I wont be looking at an upgrade any time soon, but I really enjoyed your content, as always. Cheers from .au
Thank you Doc, I also won’t be changing, I hope to have many more happy years on my 1250
Carl 🙋🏻♂️🙏
So sorry to hear you’ve been ill, love your reviews.
Hi Graham, I think maybe your comment is for Matt from the channel The Bike Show… Matt has indeed been through a very difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, he’s shown incredible courage with this a very difficult illness.
Best wishes Carl
This must be the best video I’ve seen so far on U tube about the new GS,well done👍
Thanks Eddy, have a nice Sunday, Carl
Great vid as usual Karl I find your vids like many others easy to follow everything is explained in simple understandable terms thank you for your time, keep it on the stops 🙏
Thanks 👍 Kenny, much appreciated, Carl
The best review of the new model by far - the press seem to have missed the detail that you have provided. I will wait for the new GSA personally but your review of the standard model has answered a lot of questions for me. Great channel and great content from a motorcyclist not a journalist!
Hi David, thank you, your feedback is much appreciated, I think they are already testing the new GSA so we should know more early next year.
Ultimately BMW will probably wait to see how this new GS version is received before deciding on the final look and specs of the GSA. its going to be very interesting.
Carl
This is the kind of video and channel ive been looking for. Ive liked and subscribed!
I almost bought my first 1250GS last year. I'm coming off of a Speed Triple and wanted to get into the adventure/tourer segment with a GS. I look forward to testing a 1300 - when I first got on the 1250 I felt like I've arrived at the bike I've always wanted. I am hopeful the 1300 feels that way too because the smoother gearbox and improved wind protection is important to me. Thanks for a great video - looking forward to the next.
Hello and welcome, thank you for subscribing.
Do go and have a test ride, its an incredible motorbike and if your coming from the excellent Speed triple you will probably really like the new dynamic feel the 1300 has, over the 1250.
Gearbox is a dream come true for us GS owners...
Carl
Very insightful perspectives - thankful you would take time to provide this much information and insights. Thanks for your great work on this!
Hi Henry, thank you very much. Best wishes Carl
Thanks for an interesting review Carl, far more valuable than the many ( boring) first impression reviews on other channels. I note that for now you are not personally planning to switch to the 1300, having the same 1250 Raylle version as yours, I’m delighted to hear that as I am hoping for more great content on your current bike. Keep up the great work!
Hi Nigel, thank you for your feedback, yes i plan to continue with my 1250 Rallye and create more content, many other content creators are moving to the new 1300, which i do understand. But...I think there is still so much more to cover on the current 1250. I will however be covering the R1300GS in more detail once i receive another bike as the technology is extremely interesting and what BMW have achieved is quite amazing in such a compact package. They have been working on the 1300 for 5/6 years and this model is just the start of what's to come, I have no doubt that they are already working towards the next MKII version somewhere in Munich.
I think the simplest way to some up my feelings is: if I did not currently own the 1250, I would not hesitate to buy the new R1300GS... it really is extremely good.
Best wishes, carl
Really impressed with the details and quality of your videos. Thank you
Hello Willem, Thankyou and welcome to the channel, it’s a shame the 3 days were very wet for this first test, but even so it was a lot of fun.
Kindest regards Carl
Great review. I'm pleased to have found this a sI have ordered a 1300, chopping in my 2019 1250. It was good to see that you can adjust the suspension as I felt that I would like to soften the ride back up in road mode, and you have shown me how to do it! Looking forward to part 2 and delivery in the next few weeks.
Congratulations 🙋🏻♂️ your going to have a fun of fun. And that sounds like a quick delivery date, lucky you 👍
What an excellent and thorough review. Your right, I’ve watched some of the big bike channels and they glossed over all the details you’ve captured. They convinced me I should be looking at a used GS1250, but you’ve made me realise the new bike is better in almost every way. As a Mechanical Engineer I appreciate all the details, especially in justifying such an expensive purchase. Great vid as usual, thanks.
Thank you !!!
I really think owners should try at least one model possibly two at their local dealerships, to get a feel for what is possible as each model is different.
If i was buying new today, it would be the new R1300GS !
and yes they are extremely expensive so making sure it meets all your needs as a rider and matches the type of roads you ride on is very important.
Kind Regards Carl
Details no one covers, like drive shaft angles and it’s benefits…fantastic. Great review, thank you (nice to have you back with BMW news).
Hi Bill, thank you for your feedback on this review, there is a lot more information to come.
Kindest regards Carl
BMW gives a lifetime warranty on the driveshaft on the 1250 GS. Not so with the 1300 GS, you get to pay to replace it every 60,000 KM, plus the 20k service intervals. Pretty expensive deal, if you ask me. Glad I bought the 2023 GS Trophy.
A lot of owners think the same and are pleased they have the 1250🙋🏻♂️
Very great comparison from you. Many things that I noticed during the test drive...!
Hi Peter, thank you 🙏
Thank you for your time and effort putting this video together, very very informative 👍 I wasn’t going to part ways with my 1250, but now I’m intrigued 😊
Well at least you can test and try the new GS and have a think !!
Thank you for your feedback, regards Carl
Im really looking forward to your next video, hopefully won’t have to wait much longer?
Hi Chris, thank you 🙏, sadly I had a cancel the second bike due to snow and ice which was disappointing, but it’s rebooked for January. Carl
Thanks Carl, a very helpful explanation of the changes to the GS. The new engine and gearbox sound amazing.
Hi Tony, thank you, I hope you get the opportunity to test one.
Carl
Your videos are fantastic. As an owner of a new 2023 1250GS, the 2024 changes are very interesting. Thanks for the time spent making your videos.
Hi Sandbiker, thank you for your feedback and comments.
Kind regards Carl
Sitting there in your garage, that 1250 looks 100 times better.
A lot of owners are probably going to agree with you... smile
Carl
Aesop wrote a beautiful tale a long time ago.
It’s called “The fox and the grapes”. 😊
I agree. But I think it is due to the lack of crash bars etc…
That’s true mine does, but still it’s very different, Carl
Yeah it more sleek. But not in a better way. Kinda like and suv from 2010 to 2024
Well done, I really enjoyed your analysis and learned a lot from your blog. Thanks again
Hi Tristan, thank you 🙏 glad you enjoyed the episode.
Regards Carl
Thanks a lot for taking the time to make this wonderful video. I really appreciate it. Lucid presentation.
Question: Will the Nav 6 and Vario cases fit the 1300?
Looking forward to your next videos.
Thanks a lot.
Hello and thank you 🙏
Vario cases will not fit sadly.
But Navi 5/6 will and I tested my Navi 6 on the test bike.
Regards Carl
Great review - can’t wait for part 2 !
Thank you 🙏
The most beneficial comparison video between R1250&1300 gs. Thank you
Thank you,
Thanks a lot. very nice detailed comparison between R1300GS and R1250GS. That will definitely ease my decision on which one to go for.
Happy to help
Good review, nice to hear from a R1250GS owner. Many of us will be thinking of the move, so a balanced discussion is helpful. Thanks.
Hi RJ, thank you 🙏
Just subscribed to your channel and can only say what a great video, well done! 👍👍
Thank you Nelio, and thank you for your feedback 🙋🏻♂️, kind regards Carl
Excellent review Carl - best yet - very comprehensive. Disappointing to see heater and suspension setting buttons disappear and be more complicated than necessary - need heating in Scotland !
Hi Andy, thank-you. yes your definitely going to need that seat and grip heating very soon up there.
I think BMW could have put more effort into finding a different switch setup, and I have given them feedback.
Carl
The front comparison is smaller than the 1250, no one has shown that video shot, awesome review, thanks for sharing 👍🏽
Hi Pete, thanks for the feedback. Carl
Great review Carl , looking forward to the next one 👍
Thank you..
And here I am, looking at my 2013 R1200GS .. grandpa still got it :))
Indeed 👍
Best 1300 overview currently available online, especially for 1250 owners like myself. Well done as usual!
My only gripe with the "old" bike is the clunky gearbox with quickshifter which is embarrassingly bad in comparison to the rest of the bike. Having said that I can definitely live with it as and am not planning the upgrade for many more years.
Yep, i feel the same, my 1250 will be staying for a good few years yet, but the new gearbox really is nice, its not totally perfect but its a massive improvement for the GS.
As I've mentioned to a few replies here, if i currently didn't have my 1250 Rallye 2021/22, i would buy one !!
Its that good
Thank you for your feedback, Carl
I have a 1250R. The quick shiftier is smooth and works well under acceleration, when one most needs it most, but it can lock on down change, but that does not bother me.
Thank you for sharing 🙋🏻♂️
@@justthewayitis Maybe it’s better tuned on the R. On the GS also it works best between 2nd and 4th gear when accelerating with high revs but overall not great. It’s more annoying when you test ride a bike that does it better lol
Lol, yes that right, when you use one that’s setup correctly and you go back to your own bike the difference is noticeable.
Best wishes Carl
First rate presentation Carl ... Bravo! Thanks ever so much.
Glad you enjoyed it, Carl
I know this is gonna be epic and the best review on UA-cam.
I will confess when this video popped up I had movement at the station.
I think Crazy Carl needs a M 1000 XR
LOL.... Hmmm M 1000 XR, I would lose my licence in a week....
But i am looking forward to the M1300GS
Carl
The removal of those buttons for suspension and heating was certainly an oversight. Even in hot countries the heating is useful. Having to navigate through a menu to change damping on the fly when the corners come up will be unpleasant.
Yes totally agree, Carl
Back light the controls and bring the buttons back. Don’t go the way of the cars
Agree, lets hope BMW listen and make some changes for the R1300GSA version, Carl
Great video Carl, never seen you so excitable! 😁 The new GS looks like a lot of fun to dial-in and ride (perhaps to own haha) I'm looking forward to swinging my leg over one!
Hi Rikky, your going to love the R1300R when it comes out, I bet on track with the slightly higher cylinders and stiffer suspension and more settings to play with, it will be a so much fun.
Yes…. I was very impressed and excited 🙏👍
However, I will stay with my 1250 for a while yet
Have a great weekend
Kindest regards Carl
Excellent review Carl. Spot on comments. My number 1 ‘go to for your reviews and look forward to your continued R1300 reviews, tyres and or comparisons. Why? Your concentration on the less subjective and more objective issues put them apart from the main stream commentators. My garage now includes both the R1300GS and R1250GS.
Hi Rodney, thank you for your kind words, very much appreciated 👍. Lucky you to have both, are you enjoying the new 1300 ? And will you also keep the 1250?.
FYI the 2 year review goes up next week on Friday
Best wishes Carl
@@justthewayitisYes Carl, really enjoying the 1300. Still amazing me in all aspects of riding as I get use to the impressive dynamics of this bike. First service next week. The 1250 still a great bike and now looks like staying in the family with my son now returning to MC riding. Cheers, and looking forward to your ongoing greatly appreciated reviews.👌
Hi Rodney, I think your Son is going to be very happy, nice to hear you are enjoying the new GS 👍
Have a great summer
Carl
Another awesome review Carl!!!!!
Hi Fred, Thank you !!!!
Thank you for your honest and precise review! great work by BMW with this new bike.
I think the "old" 1250 will still remain a great bike.
and it will remain my bike for many years to come.... 😊 Well done Carl!👍
Thank you !!
I think a lot of us are very happy with our current 1250 model.
Carl
One of the reasons I bought and love my 2021 1250 GS Ralley is the “tough” look with the crash bars and headlight grill. Late 2019 I gained interest in buying a GS after a trip in Vietnam riding a duel sport throughout the North. I waited til 2021 (after the pandemic) to buy. So happy I did. I’m sure the 1300 GS is a great bike - but honestly I’m just so happy with my GS. I am 6’2” and it’s just a great fit .
Hi Sammy, a lot of owners agree with you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Have a good week. Carl
After this review im very happy to keep my GSA 1250 2022. I got a nice back brake light, direct access to my heated grips .i wont have to shell out on indicators if i come off or tag a low branch. ive lost weight so my bikes actally 21.8 kgs lighter. My start button that i use less than my heated grips button is in a nice out of the way place and im not distracted utilizing at my menu when riding.well happy with my luggae locks.cant beat Mechanical's locks,. Bets thing on this bike is the adaptive cruise control radar. Greta content and one of the best reviews i have seen.
Hello Stone Cold, I like the way you have thought this out and well done for your amazing weight loss 👍. Yes the new radar system and blind spot detection system are very well implemented.
Have a great Sunday
Carl
Thank you for the review👍 I am looking to buying a new GS next spring. Never owned a BMW GS before so this is very useful and interesting information cheers 👍👍
Hi Andrew, your very welcome 🙏
Very good and most in detail video as always.
Thank-you,
Carl
I appreciate the time and research that you have done to produce this video. Folks have no idea. As a 1250GS Triple Black owner, I just had to take my local dealers demo 1300 out. Thoughts, certainly more sporty and flickable and felt like a 750/900 from its reduced size. Gearbox made a noticeable whine and as you say about first gear, there was a kind of disconnect between the lever and the box as it took its time to engage. Loved the screen and thought he switchgear was fine, but why no back lit buttons? Radar stuff was great. The looks I kind of am not too sure about at the moment... as no doubt I do not sit in the newer BMW younger target range 😂 Bike will be easier to clean thanks to the Teflon frying pan finish over everything. Engine wise, mine has been hill topped and didn't notice major performance improvement if any.The bikes looks etc, I suspect will divide the GS community and be a talking point in many pubs and cafes 😂.For the extra money to change at this time I will not be swapping my GS1250.That will please the wife👍
Hi GSD, firstly... your doing great with your channel its growing very well, and as you know its not easy and takes a lot of time to put these videos together. I also wont be changing certainly not yet... I'm going to wait until the M1300GS comes out and then have a look. I did very much like it, its certainly much more flickable and nimble, and the tech is lovely especially the new screen and the radar. Yes, LOL we both are in the upper age range and I remember BMW telling me the average is 58, I think !!!.
You have a slight disadvantage with all your speed restrictions at home, I remember them well. I think the big difference is when the speed increases the new bike is much more composed and stable, and its going to attract a new younger audience.
How the current GS/A community responds... we will just have to wait and see.
Next time your in Germany, we should meet for a beer...
Kindest Regards
Carl
@@justthewayitis Thanks. I’ve now got 3 days flying out of Gatwick to look forward with the incoming storm. Should be entertaining , if only I could video that and post it😂
Keep your 1250GS Triple Black. It's just stunning.
10:19 I’m delighted you mentioned the low position for Summer !! I live in Portugal and it’s really useful for me to have airflow in the Summer!
👍
Hi Carl. Best review I have viewed on UA-cam. All the others seem to be much of a muchness. Thanks
Hi Slip, Thankyou for your feedback 🙋🏻♂️ Carl
Great video with tons of useful information. Subscribed.
Thank you 👍
Lucky you to get to play on the new GS, thanks for sharing. I'm very glad to hear they sorted out the gearbox. I own a 2020 R 1250 RS and the quick shift assist is really clunky. I use it quite a bit, but only upshift on gears 3rd and above and down shift 6 to 2. The other line up from BMW like the RR, XR and K1600, the quick shift is very smooth.
Yes it’s nice to finally see a nice improvement on the GS with the gearbox, actually quite a few other nice improvements too. I’m sure the R1300GS will arrive in North America soon.
Thank you for sharing
Kindest regards Carl
EXCELLENT REVIEW. WILL FOLLOW EVERYTHING YOU PUT OUT ….👌👌👌
Thank you very much, kind Regards Carl
Excellent video. Many thanks…❤
Thank you Robert 🙋🏻♂️
What a complete review! Thanks so much for all that work.
I do think that I will be upgrading to this newer version. I did not know about the stretch from the seat to the handlebars growing. That's not good as I already have pull-back blocks for my 1250. Question: is the maintenance interval increased at all for the valve train?
Thanks again!
Hello Michael, as mentioned below in response to similar questions about valve adjustment and service intervals , it remains the same, 6k small 12k big which includes valve check. As to handlebar settings, I have done a similar thing to you , up and back which I like, the new R1300GS has lots of options to make the fit (rider triangle) very similar to our bike setup, it’s just a case of talking this through with your dealership when choosing the spec of your new GS.
The only big change in service requirements is currently the drive shaft also needs to be changed at 60k miles. I’m currently awaiting response from bmw …. if this is a must change or an inspection and change if required.
Best the thing to do is go and have a test ride and see what you think. The adaptive ride height is very good indeed, as is the whole package from my perspective.
Thank you for your feedback
Kindest regards Carl
great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed!, Carl
Thanks for this excellent review !
Thank you, your very welcome, Carl
Karl, outstanding work as always - I really enjoy your in-depth, no agenda reviews (flapper valve video was excellent👍). I don’t care for the bug-eyed KTM look of the headlight, or the profile of the rear of the frame on this, maybe in time. Will be interesting to see what they do with the future GSA and RT but for now, my ‘22 GSA is still awesome.
Thank you 🙏, many will wait to see what they do for the GSA. Looks are an individual thing of course, thank you for your feedback
Carl
Very tempting to move from my 1250 to the 1300 for many of the things that have been improved upon. However, I’m still loving my 2022 R1250GS and will see when the 1300 GSA version…and I’m guessing an M version comes out…before I make a change. Great video-I feel like you’re the kind of GS owner I identify with and value your point of view. Thanks for all the great content.
Hi Mike, thank you and I like you will be waiting to hear more about the M1300GS, I did ask my contact at BMW, he said No Reply lol, so guess we just have to wait
Kindest regards Carl
Excellent video. Good descriptions and explanations. So well done I I subscribed. Heard some complaints on engine noise for the new engine. What do you think ?
Thanks
Hi Charles, and welcome to the channel, thank you !!. Yes the sound is different... possibly from the new cam timing chains, but once you have ridden it for a couple of hours you get used to the new sound. Carl
Great to see a more comprehensive review as opposed to another “expert” critiquing based on an hour in the saddle. Good job!👍
Hi Guy, that make me smile, thank you
Carl
Hi Carl, this is a fabulous review, and you touch on the day-to-day issues that a driver encounters. The Option 719 is my first GS; I have been riding it for the last four weeks in Australia under all conditions. It is a fantastic bike and incredibly versatile. Your review and comments are spot on. Specifically, I like your thoughts on the menu and what I can select quickly with the available buttons. There was always one function short as I was playing with what two functions I should put on the Rocker switch. Heated grips, windscreen, and damping are the most frequently used ones. Another function that is too deeply hidden in the menu is turning the auxiliary lights on or off. I really like your suggestion to add a long press to the mode button. When driving at night, I also missed illuminated switches as I have yet to memorise to find all functions and switches in total darkness. Thanks for a practical and thoughtful review focussing on the rider's experience and what matters to get the most out of the new GS.
Hi Matthias, congratulations on your new bike and thank you for your feedback on the video.
I hope BMW make some small changes to the menu system but although I have given this suggestion directly to the development team, there seems no interest in updating the software 🙄.
But best wishes to you
Regards Carl
Excellent video!
Thank you Jim 🙋🏻♂️🙏
As always, a brilliantly presented video. I concur. The heat button is needed, especially here in Canada. A separate windshield button is needed, especially for those of us that often riding highways. And illuminated switch gear. It’s starting to feel a little passive aggressive, BMW. You know it’s wanted.
I’m not suggesting the switch gear become as confusing and complex as an Africa Twin, nor am I suggesting the GS requires the number of buttons of a GoldWing. However, something was lost in engineering translation.
Terrific initial review. The explanation about reason for the new head light, drive shaft angle, and adjustable dynamic suspension settings is a notch above.
🍻
Hi Rebel, good morning
I agree on all points, its a real shame the design team stopped when they got to the handle bars and then reused the exact same controls and buttons but with just different functions. A lot more thought should have been put into this area.
Thank you for your feedback as always, best wishes
Carl
Thanks for the excellent review and attention to detail so lacking elsewhere. I'm a 2023 R1250R owner and of course very interested to know when the new drivetrain makes its way into other models!
Hi LA, I’m also very interested in what the new R1300R is going to be like, if they have improved the seat / comfort I might change 🙋🏻♂️
Thanks Carl ! Great explanation of the new gs 👍
Hello Mark, thank you 🙏
As always Carl very informative , I think it’s a backwards step and dangerous to have to scroll through a menu instead of a button system. I notice big changes to the drive shaft too. I’m not surprised at that obviously ! 👍
Hi, yes the changes and improvements to the whole drive assembly are overdue and very welcome.
As to the menu, i have no idea why BMW didn't spend more time on this important aspect.
Carl
Carl and I hope it’s not with a K, this is the first time I’ve seen one of your videos, but appreciate the detail and explanation you put into your review. It’s good to hear that BMW have made some great improvements to the bike, especially with the engine, gearbox, driveline and the technology. Unfortunately, I have a difficult time with the visuals, but maybe that will change as time passes.
Hi Jim, yes it’s Carl, and thank you for your feedback 👍. The new version does look different and better in person, and like the models before it …acceptance of a new style takes time. Although some may never fully like the new look.
Regards Carl
This is the best comparison of the new GS model. After watching this video, I have a positive attitude towards the new GS. I also have a 1250 GS and similarly at night I miss the button backlight :) Thank you for the video Karol
Thank you, yes its a shame about the handle bar controls, we will probably have to wait until the next generation or major update to see them added, which is disappointing.
Best Wishes Carl
As usual, a great detailed explanation.
I absolutely hate radar cruise control on cards. It robs me of the flow through traffic because it slams on the brakes and can't anticipate my lane changes. The blind spot warning system is great, but I use my GS offroad and will immediately remove them to replace them with Ram mount base mirrors that are crash-proof.
The bike is definitely step forward, but I love my R1250 and there isn't enough to take off or replace all the customizations I have on my current bike to use this instead. After my extended warranty (6 years) runs out I will look at replacing, but that's 4.5 years away and there will probably be a new updated version!
Hi Ryan, yes I’m sure by then an update will be released.
It’s going to be interesting to see what they do with styling for the GSA, as I think overall the new GS look has not been well received my current owners.
Have a great weekend
Thank you for sharing…
Regards Carl
I had the opportunity to get the 1300, though in my personal opinion love my 1200 GSA and 2024 1250 GSA. Thanks for the honest review!
Hi AB, congratulations on your new GS 🙋🏻♂️ and thank you for your feedback 👍
Best wishes Carl
Great help. Thanks Carl
Your welcome 🙏
Excellent report. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
As expected Carl, comprehensive and educational. Thumbs up👍
I ll stay put with my 1250GS...at least for a year or two...
(Mine is exactly like yours)
Thank you, yes no change for me at the moment, i will wait and see how the new bike develops over time.

Often best to skip the first year or two of a redesign.
Let them work the inevitable bugs out.
My preference is wait 5 years and then buy a used one from year 3ish
That’s a great way to approach it, and great value by then.
Carl
Thank you. I've been riding for a very long time. I'm a life learner. In all things. I've been told I'm voracious about learning. I'm voracious about unlearning. I recently suffered a very bad back injury which took me off the motorcycle for an extended period of time. I took a very short ride just yesterday to touch up on some skills. After a little bit of practice was stopping and some loose gravel situations I decided to go ahead and take a pleasant ride and check out the fall colors. I was struggling on a road that I know very well that has very tight twisties, off camber 180s, The whole nine yards. The whole time I knew it was all my head getting in the way.
The universe put this video in front of me this morning. So thank you, and the universe. I forgot how to enter a corner. 🤣
Side note. Anytime somebody ask me anything I always seem to send them after discussing that topic with them to your UA-cam channel. Old Harley riders, new guys that want to get out and ride sport bikes. I tell them all. You're a fantastic source of knowledge, insights and most importantly an inspiration to practice ³
Hi John, thank you for your message, we all continue to learn even as we get older. It’s great to hear your back out on the road well done! And as I know very well back problems on are not easy to cope with.
Kindest regards Carl
Thanks for the info, great show
Hi Geoffrey, glad to hear you enjoyed this introduction video
Regards Carl
Dear Carl congratulation for this review, the best I have been listening so far !
What about vibrations that were present over 4500rpm in the 1250 ?
Are the final gears longer than 1250 with a benefit on confort and fuel consumption ?
Thanks
Giuseppe
Hi Giuseppe, the fuel economy is almost identical, its very good. 54+MPG
I couldn't feel any vibrations on the new 1300, again its very good.
5 and 6 gear are taller on the 1300, again great for cruising but i slightly prefer the 1250 gearing.
Hope that helps
Carl
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it Stephen, regards Carl
Outstanding review!!!!
100% spot on with headache of suspension and heated seat and grips being moved to a menu buried in the TFT. My friend just picked a new R 1300 GS Trophy with all the premium options. Bike looks outstanding. Love the flake finish on the wheels. That said, he was burning his @$$ because the rider seat was set to 3. He thought it was controlled by the passenger heat controls. I told him no because I have a 2022 R1250GS 40th.
Anyway we got into the menu and turned it off. Bike looks fantastic in person. We are in Connecticut so he is one to take a very early delivery. He absolutely LOVES the bike.
Congratulations on the new GS, nice to hear your friend is one of the first to receive one. 👍.
They do look lovely don’t they 🙋🏻♂️.
Kind regards Carl
Great video Carl
I've had 2 test rides and now orderd one
Agree about the lack of buttons for grips and sceen
Damping not so worried as its automatically adusted
Looking forward to the next part
Mine arrives on March 1st
John
Hi John, congratulations 🎉 March will arrive quickly and you have lots of time to plan a nice trip. Carl
Real good review ❤
Thank you 🙏
Hi Carl, once more your presentation was top-notch with precise information concerning our GS! Diligent work! The question is: Will Carl switch his 1250 for the new 1300? 🤣 ( drumroll) Anxious for the next episode. Thank you sir, Marc Quebec, Canada 😉🏍
Hi Marc, NO... my beautiful R1250GS Rallye is staying !!!
I still have a long list of topics ( which subscribers have asked for) that I wish to cover on the 1250 version, and that is going to take quite some time to complete. So maybe 2025/6
However.... when the M1300GS comes out i will be having a very very close look. Smile
Best wishes Carl
Greetings !!!
Great video - clear, succinct, thoughtful - best I've seen on this bike yet. Not seen your vids before, subscribed on the basis of this one! I'm a 1250 RS rider - I like sports road riding & touring & am happy, but would like a slightly more relaxed position - the GS has never been a solution for me, especially due to my 29" inner leg measurement, but this (with the trick suspension) could be the answer. By the way - don't be fooled about living in southern Europe - I live in Valencia, Spain & up in the hills it gets barking cold in winter!!!😀
Hi John, thank you for subscribing and your feedback. A good friend of mine went from S1000RR to RS and he really likes it. I can imagine it’s cold in the mountains and Jan / Feb next year are I’m told going to be extremely cold.
Best wishes Carl
What a wonderfully insightful overview, thank you. As a 2017 1200gs owner, I appreciate thoroughness of your comparison and I do share all your praises and niggles with the bike (would a stop light be so difficult to integrate, or the switchgear? How about having open source or really more customizable software for the dash?). I also would have preferred a more easily accessible oil filter position (or maybe not an internal oil filter)... But that's a home mechanic problem!
Hello and thank you for your feedback, there is a lot to like on the new bike and I’m sure BMW are going to be busy with test rides. Yes area’s could have been better updated but only bmw know why they do these things.
Carl
I must have gotten an exceptional gearbox in my 1250. Whether the bike is cold or hot, when I engage 1st gear, the only sensation I experience is an audible one. A simple click with no abrupt movement. Best gearbox I've ever had. Clutch pull is minimal and shifting through the gears is effortless and buttery smooth. If the new bike is better it would have to have an automatic transmission but who would want that.
It sounds like your gearbox was built by the master tech on a Monday morning, lucky you 🙋🏻♂️ … if only the rest of us had one like that.
Best wishes Carl 👍
Thank you Sir for the detailed review
Hi Teri, thank you 🙏
Great review! Best!
Much appreciated!, Carl
Hello and thank you for the great video. Have you done (or do you know of a...) a video on the menu operation for all the rider options? So much to learn! 🙂
Hi Bman, thank you 🙏. I have a 3 parts series on the channel about dynamic ESA which covers most things, the 1300 menus are slightly different and I will have a video later in early summer about it.
Currently still waiting on BMW clarifying some the actual modes as the owners book is not so great.
Kind regards Carl
Great video! I currently own a 1250 Triple Black and just test rode the new 1300: wow! How can you improve the greatest?! Thanks again for the great video
Hi Rodrigo, and welcome to the channel 👍and thank you for your feedback. Yes it’s a great bike and BMW have made a big step forward. Glad you enjoyed the test ride.
Regards Carl
A very nice video, thank you. I also really like the 1300
Hi Mark, welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 👍
Kind regards Carl 🙋🏻♂️
Hello Carl, excellent comparison. Looking forward to your planned follow up’s and reminds me to review your prior videos on dynamic ESA and ride modes before the season is upon us. I must say, I tend to leave the ESA settings be as I don’t find the effects of changes in damping that recognizable. I look forward to trying this out on the 1300 to see if the settings are more noticeable.
Have you tested the new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator ? I would really appreciate hearing your review and thoughts.
Hi Randy, good evening, 3 months ago I asked BMW if they would send me one to review but they declined, I think it’s because there have been several not great reviews. A software update might fix some of the issues but I hope they change their mind and send me one. It looks good 👍.
The 1300 is much more dynamic in the way it rides and a little firmer, the 1250 is more comfortable.
I hope to have another 1300 in the summer to make a new EVO ESA series
Best wishes Carl
Thank you for the content. Think i stik to the beast 1250 for now
👍🙋🏻♂️
Looking forward to trying it out (probably next week) as I’m coming from an elder 1200. There’s going to be quite a gap I suppose!
Hi John, yes the change between 1200 and 1300 is going to be fairly large, do go for a good test ride and spend time with the sales team finding out which accessories are right for you and the type of riding you do.
I wish you lots of fun on your road test.
best wishes carl
Thank You. This is the best and most detailed comparison since I've been interested in the BMW R 1300 GS. I am currently starting my adventure with motorcycles. Maybe it's a crazy idea, but the first one will be the BMW R 1300 GS .🏍
Hello Lukasz, thank you for your feedback and I’m pleased you enjoyed this episode from the channel. I wish you lots of motorbike adventures in the future . Carl
Most of the reviewers are just repeating like a parrot the specs and features. Thorough and Impressive review. Aprreciate your time and effort to make such an eloborate video.
Hi Sandy, thank you for your feedback. More to come "Hopefully"

Very informative, thanks
Glad it was helpful!, Carl
Thank you for an interesting evaluation of the new 1300. Please give us a little longer to read the text inserts. Keep up the good work 👍
Hello Barrie, thank you for your feedback, I’ll make a note 🙏

Great video Carl, I personally think the GS looks great, I have the triple black but yours also looks stunning. But as you say it's personal
