My beloved 18yo K1200GT has reached the end of its life with me as an owner and I hope that will find a good home to go to.

The removal of those buttons for suspension and heating was certainly an oversight. Even in hot countries the heating is useful. Having to navigate through a menu to change damping on the fly when the corners come up will be unpleasant.

Amazing review of the new GS, you explained it very well mate, being an owner of a 1250 made you able to run a very accurate comparison and I could feel the joy in in your voice while explaining the new improvement like the gearbox and the quick shifter. Thanks for the informative video.

      Hello and welcome
Glad you enjoyed it, and well spotted, I was certainly very impressed and tried not to be to "over excited" about it, I will keep my 1250 for now, but the 1300 is an amazing bike and if i didn't have my 2021/22 GS I would buy one in an instant... its that good.

Best 1300 overview currently available online, especially for 1250 owners like myself. Well done as usual!
My only gripe with the "old" bike is the clunky gearbox with quickshifter which is embarrassingly bad in comparison to the rest of the bike. Having said that I can definitely live with it as and am not planning the upgrade for many more years.

    • @justthewayitis

Yep, i feel the same, my 1250 will be staying for a good few years yet, but the new gearbox really is nice, its not totally perfect but its a massive improvement for the GS.
As I've mentioned to a few replies here, if i currently didn't have my 1250 Rallye 2021/22, i would buy one !!
      Its that good

I have a 1250R. The quick shiftier is smooth and works well under acceleration, when one most needs it most, but it can lock on down change, but that does not bother me.

@@justthewayitis Maybe it’s better tuned on the R. On the GS also it works best between 2nd and 4th gear when accelerating with high revs but overall not great. It’s more annoying when you test ride a bike that does it better lol

One of the reasons I bought and love my 2021 1250 GS Ralley is the “tough” look with the crash bars and headlight grill. Late 2019 I gained interest in buying a GS after a trip in Vietnam riding a duel sport throughout the North. I waited til 2021 (after the pandemic) to buy. So happy I did. I’m sure the 1300 GS is a great bike - but honestly I’m just so happy with my GS. I am 6’2” and it’s just a great fit .

I appreciate the time and research that you have done to produce this video. Folks have no idea. As a 1250GS Triple Black owner, I just had to take my local dealers demo 1300 out. Thoughts, certainly more sporty and flickable and felt like a 750/900 from its reduced size. Gearbox made a noticeable whine and as you say about first gear, there was a kind of disconnect between the lever and the box as it took its time to engage. Loved the screen and thought he switchgear was fine, but why no back lit buttons? Radar stuff was great. The looks I kind of am not too sure about at the moment... as no doubt I do not sit in the newer BMW younger target range 😂 Bike will be easier to clean thanks to the Teflon frying pan finish over everything. Engine wise, mine has been hill topped and didn't notice major performance improvement if any.The bikes looks etc, I suspect will divide the GS community and be a talking point in many pubs and cafes 😂.For the extra money to change at this time I will not be swapping my GS1250.That will please the wife👍

Hi GSD, firstly... your doing great with your channel its growing very well, and as you know its not easy and takes a lot of time to put these videos together. I also wont be changing certainly not yet... I'm going to wait until the M1300GS comes out and then have a look. I did very much like it, its certainly much more flickable and nimble, and the tech is lovely especially the new screen and the radar. Yes, LOL we both are in the upper age range and I remember BMW telling me the average is 58, I think !!!.
You have a slight disadvantage with all your speed restrictions at home, I remember them well. I think the big difference is when the speed increases the new bike is much more composed and stable, and its going to attract a new younger audience.
How the current GS/A community responds... we will just have to wait and see.
Next time your in Germany, we should meet for a beer...
      Kindest Regards

I must have gotten an exceptional gearbox in my 1250. Whether the bike is cold or hot, when I engage 1st gear, the only sensation I experience is an audible one. A simple click with no abrupt movement. Best gearbox I've ever had. Clutch pull is minimal and shifting through the gears is effortless and buttery smooth. If the new bike is better it would have to have an automatic transmission but who would want that.

The lack of a dominant brake/taillight assembly is a safety error. If I buy a 1300 I’ll be adding a pair of Clearwater Billi Brake Lights. The Clearwater Brake light is fantastic and has saved me from tailgaters. Their driving lights are also a must have. Thanks for the comprehensive review.

Thank you. I've been riding for a very long time. I'm a life learner. In all things. I've been told I'm voracious about learning. I'm voracious about unlearning. I recently suffered a very bad back injury which took me off the motorcycle for an extended period of time. I took a very short ride just yesterday to touch up on some skills. After a little bit of practice was stopping and some loose gravel situations I decided to go ahead and take a pleasant ride and check out the fall colors. I was struggling on a road that I know very well that has very tight twisties, off camber 180s, The whole nine yards. The whole time I knew it was all my head getting in the way.
The universe put this video in front of me this morning. So thank you, and the universe. I forgot how to enter a corner. 🤣
Side note. Anytime somebody ask me anything I always seem to send them after discussing that topic with them to your UA-cam channel. Old Harley riders, new guys that want to get out and ride sport bikes. I tell them all. You're a fantastic source of knowledge, insights and most importantly an inspiration to practice ³

My start button that i use less than my heated grips button is in a nice out of the way place and im not distracted utilizing at my menu when riding.well happy with my luggae locks.cant beat Mechanical's locks,. Outstanding review!!!!
100% spot on with headache of suspension and heated seat and grips being moved to a menu buried in the TFT. My friend just picked a new R 1300 GS Trophy with all the premium options. Bike looks outstanding. Love the flake finish on the wheels. That said, he was burning his @$$ because the rider seat was set to 3. He thought it was controlled by the passenger heat controls. I told him no because I have a 2022 R1250GS 40th.
Anyway we got into the menu and turned it off. Bike looks fantastic in person. We are in Connecticut so he is one to take a very early delivery. He absolutely LOVES the bike.

    Thanks for the review Carl.
I just bought a 1250 GS Triple Black (not GSA), because the price difference for the 1300 would have put me out of the market.
I appreciated your attention to the seat height etc, but at 188cm, it's not a problem for me.
What I do have a problem with (and yes, I have seen the videos on this topic) is getting the 1250 onto the centre stand. I'm sure it's just my technique that is flawed so I will persist and learn. I'm 60+ so that might have something to do with it! (LOL)
Otherwise, I am extremely happy with my 1250 and can't see me changing for quite a few years. One of the deciding factors against other brands in this category was the low speed handling which I found far superior on the GS. (the Triumph Tiger was really scary in this area for me, and executing a low speed turn, particularly when following other traffic was not smooth at all - lots of clutch and throttle work. This also extends to the ability of the GS to maintain a constant speed just with throttle control. I understand that some of this is related to ability, but I don't feel like working hard to control a bike)
    Greetings from Australia! 🙂

Hello Michael, congratulations on your new bike, it's a lovely feeling 🙏 and the TB does look great. Putting the 1250 on the centre stand is a technique you will develop with practice, you can try moving the preload button to Max as you arrive home and as your 188cm it should still be OK for you dismounting, but using Max will make the job much easier.
Thank you for your feedback, best wishes Carl

Very thoughtful and detailed comparison. The 1300 has major improvements and minor annoyances. I'm amused that so many people strongly dislike the look of the headlight. I like it. The 12kg weight loss, improved gearbox and suspension, and more low down torque are all significant improvements.

As usual, a great detailed explanation.
I absolutely hate radar cruise control on cards. It robs me of the flow through traffic because it slams on the brakes and can't anticipate my lane changes. The blind spot warning system is great, but I use my GS offroad and will immediately remove them to replace them with Ram mount base mirrors that are crash-proof.
The bike is definitely step forward, but I love my R1250 and there isn't enough to take off or replace all the customizations I have on my current bike to use this instead. After my extended warranty (6 years) runs out I will look at replacing, but that's 4.5 years away and there will probably be a new updated version!

I rode a 1200gs rallye in Spain for 4 days and really wanted to love it. The engine and brakes were amazing but if felt too bulky, heavy, wallowed in the corners to the point where I couldn’t love one -- this 1300 looks like the potential answer. I can’t wait to ride one. Superb overview BTW, an executive summary might help 😂

yes, the comfort is very personal, but some parts are usually a little through, then you can always adjust to yourself if the base works.
Thanks to the wife for wanting to share her experience.
Im not at the sporty age, so I can hope that the 1300 is sufficiently sporty, so you'll see how it feels when you get the chance to try it. Thank you so much for the answers and look forward to your longer testing and review of 1300 with passenger. Christian

Very tempting to move from my 1250 to the 1300 for many of the things that have been improved upon. However, I’m still loving my 2022 R1250GS and will see when the 1300 GSA version…and I’m guessing an M version comes out…before I make a change. Hi Carl, this is a fabulous review, and you touch on the day-to-day issues that a driver encounters. The Option 719 is my first GS; I have been riding it for the last four weeks in Australia under all conditions. It is a fantastic bike and incredibly versatile. Your review and comments are spot on. Specifically, I like your thoughts on the menu and what I can select quickly with the available buttons. There was always one function short as I was playing with what two functions I should put on the Rocker switch. Heated grips, windscreen, and damping are the most frequently used ones. Another function that is too deeply hidden in the menu is turning the auxiliary lights on or off. I really like your suggestion to add a long press to the mode button. When driving at night, I also missed illuminated switches as I have yet to memorise to find all functions and switches in total darkness. Thanks for a practical and thoughtful review focussing on the rider's experience and what matters to get the most out of the new GS.

Thanks for an interesting review Carl, far more valuable than the many ( boring) first impression reviews on other channels. I note that for now you are not personally planning to switch to the 1300, having the same 1250 Raylle version as yours, I’m delighted to hear that as I am hoping for more great content on your current bike. Keep up the great work!

Hi Nigel, thank you for your feedback, yes i plan to continue with my 1250 Rallye and create more content, many other content creators are moving to the new 1300, which i do understand. But...I think there is still so much more to cover on the current 1250. I will however be covering the R1300GS in more detail once i receive another bike as the technology is extremely interesting and what BMW have achieved is quite amazing in such a compact package. They have been working on the 1300 for 5/6 years and this model is just the start of what's to come, I have no doubt that they are already working towards the next MKII version somewhere in Munich.
I think the simplest way to some up my feelings is: if I did not currently own the 1250, I would not hesitate to buy the new R1300GS... it really is extremely good.

  • @rockyk3973
    @rockyk3973 10 місяців тому +1

Thanks Carl. Great first pass on the important features of the bike. Very good explanation on how the rider will experience the new bike versus the 1250. Many reviewers other than you, have missed the fact that the damping setting within each of the modes can be individually configured to one of five settings. I watched over half a dozen or more reviews before any other reviewer mentioned that and, it was only one of them other than you that did.
One thing you left out with regards to suspension is that the new DSA system has a second spring in each shock allowing for the actual spring rate (not preload mind you, specifically spring rate) to change with the riding mode selection. The engagement of the second spring (sitting in what looks like an elongated shock fluid reservoir) per my understanding, is engaged and its effect is controlled hydraulically.
For those that are performance oriented when it comes to suspension, the fact that damping is user configurable within each mode and, that the mode changes themselves actively change the spring rate too, is a big deal. The spring rate selected per mode as I understand it, is factory pre-set though and not configurable (i.e. unlike the damping, there is no user configuration for spring rate changes other than the factory default inherent in selecting a given riding mode).
One more thing, for short riders like me, the adaptive ride height front and rear is also a big deal. Shorter riders like myself ( I currently have a low ride height 1250GSA) no longer have to permanently give up suspension travel just in order to be able to get our feet down reasonably comfortably at a stop. I hope that the combination of the more slender rear subframe/seat you mentioned plus the adaptive ride height and the available low seat option will in fact be the game changer for shorter riders that it portends to be.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  10 місяців тому +1

Hi Rocky, thank you for your in-depth comment, with regards to the other suspension features.
I actively decided not to talk about this in the first episode for 2 reasons
1: the video was already long and I felt it would be too much technical talk for a first review. Also many owners are not really interested in the technology they just want to know the bike works and performs well, so a balance needs to be found.
2: I hope to have 1 possibly 2 other bikes to test during which I will have more technical explanations about the new systems, but to do this I need time, not just 3 days, I need a bike for several weeks to create such content.
I’ve made this crystal clear to BMW and it’s now up to them to provide a bike for a longer test period.
However you are absolutely right it’s a major enhancement that really deserves more focus and owners really should have an understanding of how important this is.
No idea why the other testers didn’t talk about this as for me it’s key to the success of the the new R1300GS.
Thank you for sharing and your feedback very much appreciated
      Kindest regards Carl

    • @rockyk3973
      @rockyk3973 10 місяців тому +1

Thank you for the response Carl. I can understand that not everyone wants to know about or cares about technical details that are perhaps best discussed separately and in greater detail once more time can be had to explore their implications.
Another reviewer just recently made the observation that the new GS is not really one bike but can in fact be a very different bike ergonomically and with respect to its suitability or lack thereof for given rider's preference and mission. That is, it can be, depending upon which options one chooses to purchase and how one configures the suspension and other electronics. The 1300 GS I plan to end up with will likely be noticeably different from riders with other missions and, just as importantly, whose physical stature is different than mine.
I enjoy my 2019 1250 GSA for all its versatility but have come to learn after all the miles that I have put on it, that for me, the sportier side of the sport touring equation is really where my heart is. When I bought it 4+ years ago, I would have been happy with just touring on it but, having discovered it was capable of quite sporty riding on the street, my expectations for the next generation bike were raised. Dirt capability is and always was, pretty far down the list for me with my existing GS. Anticipating the eye rolling from some Adventure purists, I personally see no contradiction in this because it is such a versatile and enjoyable platform "just" as a street bike - with no Adventure Bike pretensions. For context, I have a few years experience riding full on dirt bikes. I also recently spent 2 days at the BMW Performance Center off-road riding class in South Carolina riding a 1250GS. I highly recommend that for anyone, that is whether or not they intend do much if any off roading. It will improve riding skills and confidence on the bike noticeably and, it offers a deeper appreciation for its versatility. (And, when you drop the bike as you undoubtedly will, multiple times, there is zero liability. If the bike you are using gets broken they simply get you another one to ride.)
I hope BMW comes through with longer term test bikes for you. I very much look forward to your further in depth reviews of the 1300GS.

      Hi Rocky, good morning
I do agree that this new platform can be tailored to several completely different formats, and like you…the sports touring setup is indeed where I like to be.
I have heard good things about the BMW off-road classes so perhaps I will try one next season.
I do hope I get the opportunity to test other variants and have enough time to put together some interesting technical episodes, it’s now up to BMW.
I’ve passed my thoughts onto the team in Munich along with suggestions to fix the lack to buttons/ controls on the handlebars , which could be easily done via a software update to add LONG PRESS features to some buttons.
How they choose to respond to this feedback…. Smile… I just don’t yet know.

Glad I bought a 2023 model. I'm tall and any less legroom would be a major problem.
I wish the rear suspension was smoother on my bike. I can feel every tiny crack in the road in my foot pegs. There is also an annoying tapping feeling in the foot pegs when accelerating from 20 to about 55 MPH.
Of course the dealer says it's normal. I guess they are not trained or smart enough to do any troubleshooting except to change parts and charge astronomic amounts of money for it.

We do need to think ( that’s my bike 😊)
I could live with the looks but NOT the lack of function on the switch gear, the removal of the rear lamp assembly, plus the non adjustable seat.
      Kindest regards Carl

Great first review! I’ve already ordered one to replace my R1250GS, pending a test ride, but it looks a lot better (IMHO) and the adaptive ride height will make it feel a lot better for me (as a bit of a shortarse).

@@justthewayitis I’ve gone for the Tramontana, just because I love that colour and the spec. I’ll be replacing the rear comfort seat with the sports version, as fitted to the Trophy, as I don’t carry a passenger and it makes the bike look a lot sharper, similarly I’ll be deleting the luggage rack and just fitting the pannier rails. That may all change if I don’t enjoy my test ride of course!

Hi Vince and welcome to the channel, thank you for your feedback, it’s probably the perfect time to go to your dealership and look and test both models and see which you prefer, because I would imagine there are going to be a lot of fully spec 1250 1 - 2 year old version being taken in part exchange and the dealership won’t want them hanging around, so it’s a great time to find an almost new low mileage 1250.

As a very happy R1250GS owner there are 2 things that are an absolute "no" for me as you have mentioned. The heated grip control, in North Western Europe easy access and control of this is essential, and rear lights. I am not going to spend £20k on a motorcycle to have to then buy and fit an aftermarket tail light kit.

I think that smaller, shorter, younger, non pillion carrying riders might be where the new GS is aiming for. I’ve not ridden it but I have sat on it and it feels considerably more compact. The seat options don’t look as 2 up comfort friendly either. Whilst I’ll certainly give it a test ride I think ill be keeping my 1250 and I suspect a lot of us 50 something 6 foot plus distance tourers will be. I take my hat off to BMW. They know how to sanitize fun. I think it would be an interesting comparison with the R1100GS. Which would be a more memorable ride and feel like it was your own riding skills that got you to that destination? There are some green lanes used by off roaders near where I live, hand on heart I have never seen a "big GS" use them. In fact 98% will never see off road action because they are still too heavy and expensive when dropped. So this 1300 WILL sell, why? Because....

BMW 1300GS could have been a benchmark in its class, but as you pointed out: 1) absence of taillight. It just does not make any sense. the absence took away so much personality; 2) Headlight: no, absolutely the ugliest possible shape; 3) sitting position: another BIG NO. BMW missed a massive chance. Not enticed to upgrade at all. I bet we'll see significant restyling in 12-24 months. Thanks for the review, Carl. Professional and detached.

Just my humble opinion regarding your observations:
      1) Absence of taillight
There was no taillight even in the previous 1250, it was just a stoplight. I guess two lights on the back of the bike are better than just one.
Did you notice that the central stop light has been replaced by a radar?
Things change, for the better in this case.
      2) Headlight
That’s just a matter of taste
I think the new headlight is modern, beautiful and very effective, in a short time it will be recognised as the new BMW Motorrad “sign”.
      3) Sitting position
Big no (shouted) for what reason?
It’s very comfortable, it allows almost everybody to easily touch the ground with your feet and wind protection is definitely improved.
You have a choice of different saddles and a new electronic suspension function to lower the height of the sit related to the speed of the bike.
      What’s wrong here?

“The fox and the grapes” 😊

I bet there will be no restyling in the next five years, maybe more.

      All the best 😉

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I personally don't like it. This bike I am sure will be a welcome for people who thought the 1250 was too physically large and heavy and younger riders who love more technology. Thanks Carl, I’m actually looking for a screen to provide a bit more protection for cool or rainy days on my GS. I don’t really play with the screen much, it’s either up or down. The electric screen seems a bit much for a GS. However oddly I’m also planning to switch to road tires as my bike rarely sees dust let alone off road conditions. I was thinking Michelin Road 6, until I saw your comment on the Metzler Sportec M9. In previous posts you mentioned ride quality is noticeably smoother / quieter with road tires.
