I have never bought into any story that has humans voluntarily giving up technology. That is simply contrary to every way we think and do anything. We must learn, it is our nature. Technology is a logical outgrowth of that knowledge. That is main reason why the finale of BSG was such an eye roller for me. Furthermore one can punish oneself all they want. To inflict such punishments on people thousands of years hence, who had no say in whatever crimes you committed, is simply abominable. So booooo to the first story.
First story doesn’t really make any sense to me. What’s the point of resetting your species if you’re just planning on giving back all of the tech in a couple hundred thousand years? The only metric they seem to be using for if humanity is ready for it or not is our ability to reach the moon, something we did during the Cold War! Like if that beacon existed IRL we would have found it already and we would have all of that technology. Can we honestly say that we would be any better than our precursors in that scenario? I think a better ending would have been the beacon being on Pluto or something harder for humanity to reach and have the message asking the aliens to never mention old humanity to the new humanity so that they can have a fresh start
