Except that they embraced the thing after their own fathers had been through it. War sucks ass, peace... I'm here in 2021 and "peace" sucks too. The opposite of peace is not war. The opposite of peace is fear. My grandfather was there. We learn a lot from our fathers, whether we like it or not. The ones in the story above had learned the lessons, all that their fathers could teach, and used them to kick all of the relevant ass. And then (this is the best part) retreat, into their old corner, like they don't even rule the universe, and be like "You don't need to be nice to us or anything. Just don't genocide our friends..." There needs to be a next chapter to this one.
That first story reminds me of an old GalCiv 2 game i had long ago. I was playing a trade focused empire, decent tech, and loads of credits. But only a couple of old patrol craft from the early years of the game. Que the Tholians? i think, declaring war on me. I looked at my massive bank account, i designed the best ship i could with the tech i had, a medium size hull. And i straight up instantbuilt it one on every single planet i had burning cash in the process. Went from one of the weakest fleets to one of the strongest in the space of a single turn...... Needless to say, i won that war without much trouble.
it's almost cartoonish to picture, a tiny trade empire gets confronted with war. then suddenly every shipyard within the system chugs out a high-tech battlecruiser or whatever and turns the war into a meat grinder. fantastic
I love stellaris games like this, where I focus everything into tech and economy but the moment a war is declared I become one of the dominant forces n the galaxy
Yeah this is pretty typical of Gal Civ in my experience. The AI doesn’t properly factor economy or industrial capability into its military analysis when declaring wars so they tend to declare wars they probably shouldn’t. It does make for satisfying wars though.
War means arms dealing and high-profit high-risk markets (like smuggling food through blockades), peace means a superior business environment and stability for more long term, low-marging profits
Story one: the WAAARRGG! is ignited and once it has served its purpose it fades to dust. Or how humanity showed the barest fragment of the war filled past. Story 2: I met an elf three times the first time when I was a young kid, the second time as a young man and I saved their life (was put to the lash so the elf tried to prevent their kind from doing so), and lastly as an old general on a battlefield saving the elf from one of my men who would have killed them. Life is strange sometimes.

It still takes years to build factories needed for ammunition production etc.. WW1 we had "Shell hunger" and during WW2 USA started building ammunition factories from 1939 to sell to others and as such were ready when they joined the fray. At the moment many countries around the world are ramping up ammunition production to match Ukrainian needs and it's still going to take about a year until the production truly kicks off. Every time it takes 3-4 years to build factories and suddenly there is pretty much unlimited supply of ammunition. And after the war the production capacity is slowly dismantled to save money...
Militarily speaking that was a dumb move from humanity let them fight a little bit alone establishing what power the empire had and lower the ally resources as to have a better place after that
Depends on what kind of situation they faced and how their leaders saw the war. It is quite possible the reason they went full fkforce is because they knew that after the surrender of one of the treaty members and seeing that the other xenos are not rolling over to a war economy they realized the war would end quickly. In other words, they realized they will already be in a very good position of power and negotiation if/when they win the war but they need their remaining allies and their infrastructure.
