Just something about Oldsmobile that is nicer than the rest. My friend’s dad bought a brand new 66’ Olds 98 Luxury Sedan power everything and behind the front seat for back passengers was a vanity mirror and Kleenex holders man that car was the bomb and the reason I love Oldsmobile. 10 years later they still have it estimated close to 300,000 miles and now us kids have our license and he let me drive it and it was smooth as glass. No kidding.
As an owner of a 1969 full size Buick, I can explain the confusion about the air conditioning... The fact that it is dealer-installed explains why it is a genuine Frigidaire compressor, but the fact that it still has the stupid heater blower stashed away in the right front fender indicates that it is not a factory system. The factory air conditioning had a different box on the firewall, and the blower sat right on top, very easy to get to... In fact I just remembered, the OEM evaporator box went right where that big X is sorta hidden by the vacuum tank.
You are correct. The evaporator case is not visible on the engine side of the firewall. This is an aftermarket system with a period correct A-6 compressor.
Great car Bill !! Beautiful color. Great shape. Only thing that bothers me with these Oldsmobile's is the way the steering wheel isn't centered with the dashboard.
Hey Bill, let me see the dash on that beautiful car and I'll tell you if it's factory installed A/C. Also, does it have the optional 8 track player mounted under the dash? That would be a dead giveaway on the A/C. I know that doesn't make alot of sense, but trust me on that. I don't remember if the town cars got the hi output 455's in 69, but the Luxury Sedans and the Luxury Coupes did, and this car may have come with dual exhaust if it had the HO engine. If original the gas cap would be a giveaway on the HO engine. If it says 'premium fuel only' it's the better engine. If you have the exhaust worked on, it needs a resonater at the end before the tailpipe turns down under the bumper to be factory/period correct.

Oldsmobile DID NOT ship cars in 1969 with the expectation that the dealer would/could install an OEM air conditioning system. That doesn't make the car any less beautiful, I'm just passing on the info. :)
@@christianbugatticgI just got to thinking, the fact that it's a survivor with an aftermarket air conditioner makes even rarer still. I'd be willing to bet there are fewer examples of an aftermarket system than cars with OEM systems. It's not a bug, it's a feature! :)
I might go with what Bill said. This may be a dealer add-on a/c. I can't see the evaporator connections or the PAO valve for the pressure drop to the evaporator. I didn't see the interior but if there's an air handler under the dash where the optional 8 track player would have been, it's def an add-on. The compressor looks period correct, but the firewall/evaporator housing doesn't look correct for factory a/c. I may be wrong. It's been 45 years since I owned a 1969 Olds 98. I know by 71 that firewall/evap case would be incapable with factory air.
It is a little confusing to me. I know in 89 when I sold Nissans we would get new pickups and they came with the AC that had to be installed at the dealer. I think this may be the same case.
Well it is on the sticker so maybe the car was built a particular was and the dealer ordered one like it with AC so maybe it was installed at the dealer. I can't be sure.

The factory a/c and heater controls were on the left side of the steering column. If the control isn't there, it isn't a factory system. In 69 you could see the evaporator case from the engine compartment. This car does not have an evaporator case on the engine side of the firewall. I don't know why/how the window sticker would show it unless the dealer typed it in as a dealer installed aftermarket option. If you remove the rear seat bottom cushion, the original build sheet should be on the floor on the passenger side. It would show the factory installed options. It may be under the carpet or someone may have removed it, but it was the equivalent of an RPO code sticker in the glove box on newer cars. None of that takes away from the beauty of this car. Aftermarket air conditioners were very common in that era. If that car had the optional 8 track player, that would take my breath away. ;)
The matte black spray bomb that went off on the firewall..spraypainting wires, regulator and everything else..and the day fresh engine paint..car was better off as it was..Makes you wonder about rest of car..
What is to wonder? Just look at it. It is a 54 year old car, someone prior to us probably matte blacked the firewall thinking it would look good. It is obvious there is no rust. The car presents well for a driver. I wonder if you saw the undercarriage videos?
