Kiwi, being a 4-dr hardtop, that is a R-A-R-E one, and the fact that it's original & solid as a rock makes it a real keeper! I'd love to see more cars like this one on your channel!
"Slim Jim" transmission - so called because it was much narrower than the dual coupling Jetaway Hydramatic it replaced. It was a bit longer and much narrower - to allow for a lower floor tunnel. It does have a fluid coupling inside - behind the pump - with an "accel-a-rotor" that sort of worked as a stator. The fluid coupling allowed the car to stop with the engine running. On takeoff, the fluid coupling would multiply torque thanks to the accel-a-rotor about 1.2x and first gear is very high numerically. On the shift from 1-2, the coupling would actually drain and the front clutch would apply, locking the flywheel to the geartrain for a direct-connected second gear. Third gear involved refilling the coupling, providing a split-torque power flow, part through fluid and part through the front clutch, locking the two planetary gearsets together for a 1:1 ratio. The ratio spread between 1 and 2 is huge so the car will rev up in 1st and then the engine will drop to near idle as it grabs 2nd gear. Very odd when you experience it, but it's the way these things shift.
OMG! I almost bought on of these about 18 years ago. Instead, I ended up buying an unrestored original 1962 Olds Dynamic 88 Holiday Coupe that was completely rust free! I still have it and it still runs great!
I has 69 Olds 88 with a 4bbl 455. They said it put out 390 hp but its real claim to fame was over 500ft pounds of torque at anywhere north of 2700 rpm to redline. They didn’t have formal roll racing back then but that old girl would cruise the Texas highway at 90+ mph in comfort. Had a comfy front seat and a backseat the size of a living room couch. Was an awesome dating vehicle. You could easily fit 8 on two dollar a carload night at the drive in and have room for a cooler, lawn chairs, and Jimmy Haffa and a buddy in the trunk. All at the same time. Only downside was that gas prices had went up to seventy cents a gallon and my $2.40 an hour wage didn’t go far. You could hear when those two back barrels opened up and just imagine the gas gauge dropping. Little did we know that gas was headed over a dollar. Sadly, some drunk hit the left side of the car doing about forty miles an hour. Trashed the car from the front to rear quarters and everything in between. Damned near killed him and I had a sore neck for a week. Sold the motor and TH400 to a friend to put in his 73 cutlass since he was over the smog limited 350 it came with. With a new intake, card, and set of headers, that cutlass ran like a scalded dog. Didn’t handle for shit or stop all that well, but it would accelerate as fast as your tires could take it.
Love these old land yachts. There hasn't been a car made since the 80's that's worth owning. Modern vehicles are disposable appliances. Cars like this are our history and should be treated as such
Love the 98’s. I have a 69 olds 98 Holiday Coupe. White with a black interior. All stock. Older restoration but super solid. It is 18.5 feet long.👍👍👍👍👍👍
That's a very nice car! The hoods and deck lids of many of those 60s/70s land yachts are nearly big enough to land a helicopter on! My wife and I finished restoring/upgrading a 1976 Coupe DeVille a few years ago for weekend "banzai runs" from Ohio to North Carolina to visit our grandchildren. We don't drive it daily but, there's really nothing like pointing it south, setting the cruise on about 85 and letting the miles roll by.

They might love the sound of 500" of Detroit Iron through dual 2 1/2" Dynomax turbo mufflers (the fully welded, stainless ones in case you're wonering) even more than I do! The "Slick Black Cadillac" seems to enjoy the ice cream runs too. His leather upholstery cleans up easy enough lol!

I do appiciate the "as is" original paint look, but I also see the original paint on the interior deck lid and say wow, this gem with fresh paint??.... I would be really torn on what to do. They are only original once, but they are also very beautiful in prime. thank you Steve for sharing this amazing car and ALL your efforts with the channel!!!
When I was 16, back in 1971, I worked for a Chev-Olds used car dealer here in Vancouver. We'd get cars like this as trade ins. They stayed this big right up until the early 1970's. I was a lot boy and car washer so I got to drive them all. It was like driving an Olympic sized swimming pool down Broadway.
Worked with a guy in 1996 who had this car with an Oldsmobile 455 in it he claimed. Didnt know much about cars at that ime . Just cruised so nice. Was white like that one as well. I was 16 at the time. Always wondered if he still has it. Beautiful car.
I had a 66 Pontiac Bonneville ragtop for around 25 years. When I was a youngster I could get quite a few people into the drive in for free by sticking them into the trunk.
Talking about the taillights and possibly being hard to find. I just checked Flea-Bay on a lark and there's a right side assembly for sale in Racine, Wisconsin for 230 bucks with 25 bucks shipping. It says it's good shape for resto. But the car, what a magnificent old boat, I love it. From back in the days of Buick Deuce and a Quarters, Imperials, DeVilles and Continentals, where styling was King.
The underside of that car is perfect. The direct drive is an interesting feature. @Kiwi - you should do a video on that. Lots of us out there aren’t familiar with it. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
I had a 1970 Chrysler Imperial Lebaron. It had its own zip code. You traveled in multiple time zones…at the same time! The rear quarters were bigger than half the cars on the road. Couches were patterned after my bench seat. I’m pretty sure Jimmy Hoffa is somewhere in the trunk.

If i needed to run home for something he would say just take my car. I was maybe 16 years old. I felt like a big shot driving that car.

When people say "it must be nice to have a full sized spare", I tell them the trunk isn't for a spare tire, it's for a spare car.

It was stolen from in front of our house in 1970 when I was 7 .I drove a nice 1961 Dynamic 88 convertible once and experienced that " Slim Jim " shifting for myself . Give it a little juice off the line and when she grabs second you really feel that 394's torque . Always wanted to find another car like dad's but 63 must have been a slow sales year for the 98 , you find lots of 64's but not 63's .

Nope, this definitely IS your father's Oldsmobile that says, "I got dough--you don't." In Chcago, these were front and center at Lawndale Oldsmobile on Ogden and Drake Avenues. A storage lot had two white 63 2 doors like this They were sitting then one day both of them wind up at the junkyard. Apparently someone bought them both so I guess saved?
Had a very dear friend who owned a Christmas Red 63 Olds Hearse and was a Santa. I also had a grade schoolteacher who had a 71 Olds Delta Royale. Would've loved to have either car.
I owned one here in London UK in 1984, I was 21 then and the same age as the Olds! Bought it from a bus mechanic for £600. It slaughtered me financially and eventually went to Sweden. Great to see one again. Best wishes
Went for a test ride in a 394 ci 1959 Old's 98 once , I remember when the accelerator was suddenly punched hard it went down low at the rear ,and was off like a rocket, it felt like it was peeling it's skinny tyres off the rims. Very , very torquey.
I think it was Caddy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac then Chevrolet. However the inter departmental competition was huge and the desire to outdo the others was serious. 😎😎😎

1:57 I don't know if it is a trick of the camera, but it appears there is at least a foot missing on the inside of the trunk compared to how long the back of the car is. From the end of the back door to the bumper looks like it's like 10 feet.
In the mid seventies I had a 1963 two door old 98. it had the Starfire 394 I believe it had 12.24 compression. Electric bucket seat with a tack on the console. Neet thing it had was a foot button next to the high beam switch so that you can advance to the next radio station. cool.
I had a 1964 (my birth year) Olds Starfire for about a year back in the 80’s. Same engine. I think it was 10.5:1 compression (?). So much torque. Had the same headlight dimmer from a War of the Worlds set stylist. Back then, you could still get parts from your local (New Mexico) junkyard. Had to sell to finance my lavish USAF junior NCO lifestyle.

She's a sweet old gal and a survivor. She's enormous. I love it. It's hard to believe it's only a 4400 pounds. It's amazing that those trim pieces are actually cast. But stamping stainless that much and polishing it enough to have a smooth shiny surface was probably too expensive.
had a 63 Super 88 with the 394 and slim jim transmission. I would idle it along and the 1st to 2nd shift was so much fun. the revs would drop to almost nothing and the torque would propel that thing from walking speed to 30 mph without touching the gas. i miss that car. pops made me sell it cuz it was "too powerful" for me being a new driver

I took my driver's license in a 1976 Mercury Marquis - probably as large. The trunk had a dip that was big enough for THREE basic golf bags and the main part of the tank was nearly large enough for a person to lie down in and you could almost straighten your arms right out before touching the trunk lid. A large child could sleep in the back seat parcel shelf!
If I'm not mistaken, that grille is anodized aluminum. If so, there's probably enough aluminum right there to cast a block AND cylinder head for a modern engine lol!
I'm an American. The first time I saw photos of a late 60s Holden Brougham, I thought the front view bore a striking resemblance to the 63 Oldsmobile. Would you agree?
Yeah, it's big. As you know Kiwi, a Galaxie or Impala were considered huge down here. That engine mounting setup was used on the old grey motor Holdens down here, GM influence across the globe. I can clearly see how you would want to relieve Steve of the burden of owning that.
The PA Vauxhall had that set up. Late '70s, a guy came into my garage, saying his PA gearbox was gone. Yep, it fell out on the road, trailing behind on its linkages. We never did find the driveshaft. Probably still lying somewhere off the old ChCh Motorway.

Was not a good transmission. Tellingly, Pontiac stayed with the Dual Coupling Hydramatic for their senior Starchief and Bonneville models.

@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 Kiwi you have the pecking order at GM correct . That rear end was also used in Pontiacs and possibly in Buicks , but I've never been able to verify the Buick usage .
1:57 I don't know if it is a trick of the camera, but it appears there is at least a foot missing on the inside of the trunk compared to how long the back of the car is. From the end of the back door to the bumper looks like it's like 10 feet.
Could be the gas tank taking that space...🤔
My 1st car was a 1962 Buick LeSabre 2 door hardtop. It had 12,000 miles on in when I got it in 1978. Wish I had it back.

In the mid seventies I had a 1963 two door old 98. it had the Starfire 394 I believe it had 12.24 compression. Electric bucket seat with a tack on the console.
Neet thing it had was a foot button next to the high beam switch so that you can advance to the next radio station. cool.

I had a 1964 (my birth year) Olds Starfire for about a year back in the 80’s. Same engine. I think it was 10.5:1 compression (?). So much torque. Had the same headlight dimmer from a War of the Worlds set stylist. Back then, you could still get parts from your local (New Mexico) junkyard. Had to sell to finance my lavish USAF junior NCO lifestyle.

She's a sweet old gal and a survivor. She's enormous. I love it. It's hard to believe it's only a 4400 pounds.
It's amazing that those trim pieces are actually cast. But stamping stainless that much and polishing it enough to have a smooth shiny surface was probably too expensive.
I think cost would have been the deciding factor on the trim and really not that heavy really given the acreage of it 😁

had a 63 Super 88 with the 394 and slim jim transmission. I would idle it along and the 1st to 2nd shift was so much fun. the revs would drop to almost nothing and the torque would propel that thing from walking speed to 30 mph without touching the gas. i miss that car. pops made me sell it cuz it was "too powerful" for me being a new driver

I love Oldsmobiles my Daughters first car was a 72 olds 98 2dr. 455. She still has it today 88k original miles. Unmolested every still with the car.

I took my driver's license in a 1976 Mercury Marquis - probably as large. The trunk had a dip that was big enough for THREE basic golf bags and the main part of the tank was nearly large enough for a person to lie down in and you could almost straighten your arms right out before touching the trunk lid. A large child could sleep in the back seat parcel shelf!
I had one!Put hot plugs in them! Great MPG! Run like Hell!

If I'm not mistaken, that grille is anodized aluminum. If so, there's probably enough aluminum right there to cast a block AND cylinder head for a modern engine lol!

Yeah, it's big. As you know Kiwi, a Galaxie or Impala were considered huge down here. That engine mounting setup was used on the old grey motor Holdens down here, GM influence across the globe. I can clearly see how you would want to relieve Steve of the burden of owning that.
The PA Vauxhall had that set up. Late '70s, a guy came into my garage, saying his PA gearbox was gone. Yep, it fell out on the road, trailing behind on its linkages. We never did find the driveshaft. Probably still lying somewhere off the old ChCh Motorway.
