Thank you, Stan! This video was very helpful, I'm just getting into sending CW with a paddle and didn't know which way to push for dots or dashes. Hey, you have to start somewhere and your video was just what I needed.

Wondered what that device was for years after seeing it when I was a kid. I knew it was a "keyer" but it looked different and was operated differently than what was shown on TV.

Technically speaking the "keyer" is inside the radio (used to be outboard-long time ago) and is only the electronic circuitry that provides the automatic shaping and repeats. This device is only the KEY (paddle when used with keyer). They can also be run as a straight key (without keyer) where the sender has to make the dits and dahs by his touch, the same as a "straight" key. Using paddles (single or double lever) set to manual is known as sideswiping see Sideswiper or Cootie keys/keying. It's ergonomically superior to straight keys, but retains the control of manual keying. too much? yeah. I know. 73.

This kind of single paddle sideswiper seems better designed for use as a semi-automatic key?

Some like semi-autos, but that is a more complex key in design and operation. I prefer straight up-side-swiping without electronic keyer. Code that sounds good, is good. Accuracy transcends speed-always. I get a big kick out of guys running 30+ wpm and having to throw in the signal for "oops/error/redo" rather often. "Hittin' the OOPS button" I think I'll start calling that. But it's much preferred to machine made code.

Just received my antique home-brewed copy of the Vibroplex here. Setting it up for side-swiping. 73.

I use to have an old vibroplex bug keyer and used it for sideswipe also. Took off the counter weight and adjusted the gap for using the right side of the key. Worked great.

If you want a nice straight key that stays where you put it. Check out the Begali Spark, heavy as a brick and ,if your heavy fisted as I'm you'll love it.

funny you mention the begali spark. that is one of TWO keys I had narrowed it down to. the other is the Begali Camelback. i am a beginner with a straight key. any diff between the two that would matter to me? choosing has slowed my ordering. cant decide.

N5XTC DX Not ever using the Camelback I wouldn't be able to say.I did consider it. What made my choice at the end was the reviews on eham. I sure either one would not be a disappointment.

correct, both have really good reviews. also use eham. def getting one or the other real soon. only have an iambic keyer and want to practice the straight key. 73 de N5XTC
