It’s so true to all animals, (imo) horses especially, because they communicate with posture/body language. I challenge you to watch any movie/TV show with horses, where there is one shot without an added vocalization (neigh/ whicker etc.)
The biggest detail that made the horses so human in this movie are the eyebrows - horses don't have it, and it's a huge tool to showcase emotion. This is by far one of the best animations ever - story, pacing, characters, soundtrack and score (Hans Zimmer did the instrumental part) and the quality of the animation, all top tier, absolutely perfect. Nostalgia is on, I'm gonna have to watch the full movie now
Horses dont have hairy eyebrows, because they are fully furred or fluff 🤪❤️, but they have the exact muscle structure of eyebrows and they express a lot with their eyes, nostrils, lips, ears, and every body muscle possible. They are super at detecting and reflecting energy. Blessings
@@Gaia369 you are completely right. I work with horses for a living and one of my own horses just had to have an eye removed. He is still so expressive with the eye brow above the empty socket that from 5 or more feet away you don't even notice the eye is gone underneath it.
The fact that the music and songs for this movie weren't even nominated for Oscars ... one of the biggest and most overlooked Oscars snubs in my opinion! Such a great reaction! So great to see you guys appreciating this movie for the masterpiece it is!
@@ExtremelyDiscerning Only thing: I prefer to watch the German dub, because it has a way better narrator and a more..involved...text. There it really sounds as if they are the thoughts of the horse.
DreamWorks said "Listen, if we're gonna do horses, we're gonna do it right dammit!" I love seeing the movements of the animals in this movie. Definitely solidified my curiosity for nature when I was young ❤️
@@eloisewillsby you sure that wasn't something they were testing, like I doubt that the old gem would enjoy it, more like it's for the new gen... Which is much f up of all
As a Native American, growing up this was absolutely one of my favorite movies! It was so cool to see my people represented in a positive light as a kid and I was definitely a horse girl (in part because of this movie)! 😅
It was so ahead of its time with the message, too. And I love that it’s not that Little Creek uses his *Native American Magic* to speak to Spirit or sth, it’s that he treats him with kindness and earns his respect
I can tell you, as an Equine(horse) artist, they did a fantastic job of making the characters move and feel pretty much like real horses. They’re some of the most complex animals to draw, and indeed, the animators did spend a ton of time with actual horses, specifically a Kiger Mustang that they based Spirit’s design on. They really captured them beautifully, I love this movie. I usually hate how horses are portrayed in animation, because they’re often rendered so badly, or are reduced to giant dog-like caricatures. This movie really did me proud💜
Something I'm not sure of if you know about this movie is that DreamWorks didn't just reference horse images, they actually bought a Kiger Mustang (then named Donner, later renamed Spirit after the character he inspired) and had their artists watch this horse. Also Rain, Spirit's girlfriend is actually given an honorary certificate of registration by the American Paint Horse Association.
The real horse now lives at Return To Freedom's American Wild Horse Sanctuary. The certificate of registration is viewable on Rain's page on the Spirit fandom wiki. I apologize for no links but I know some channels auto-delete any comments with links.
"Donner" means something rather... interesting in my language. Basically, it just means thunder but we use is as a rather bad word when you want to beat someone up. Also just realised English doesn't have a single word meaning "to beat up". We have 5 of varying intensities.
Hey guys, I'm glad you enjoyed the film. I was a co-director of Spirit 20 years ago. It was a labor of love with an amazing team. We had the animators draw from life - DWks purchased a Kiger mustang that was the model for Spirit. The animators also took riding lessons to understand the biomechanics of horse movement...and it shows.
I actually looked you up, you've got Prince of Egypt in your iMBD as well. Thats a really impressive portfolio. Thank you so much for helping bring a lot of my favourite movies to life
From Venezuela i just want to say thanks for being part of the creation of this amazing movie... This is my childhood, i love so much the music of this movie, i just watched it again and had some tears!
I want to let you know my sister made my mother get up at 7 am every single day for 5 years so she could watch this movie first thing in the morning. Genuinely think this is one of the best things DreamWorks has ever done (which is sayjng a lot) and I seriously applaud you for that
I was right around 10 when this movie came out and I remember going to see it in theaters several times. This movie holds such a special place in my heart ❤️ I still cry every time
Oh my gosh, you were co-director!? 😲 Thank you so much for helping to make a movie that was part of my childhood! 🥲 Seriously, I sang all the songs, I sobbed and cheered for Spirit, and my brother and I made up a game as kids on our trampoline of bucking each other off just like Spirit did to all the soldiers, lol. 😂 Really stellar movie, don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise!! ❤❤❤
I really appreciate that the horses don’t speak in this film-it’s just their expressions. Horses are also just such emotionally expressive animals anyway…beautiful!
It is absolutely criminal how underrated this film is and the score too - in terms of among Hans Zimmer’s best. It certainly is one my favorites by him.
To answer your question about refencing, DreamWorks did in fact buy a captive bred Kiger mustang they named Spirit (before that he was called Donner of Steens Mountain). Both is mother and father were wild caught Kiger mustangs. Kiger is the range he was descended from, and mustang is the breed. After the making of the movie Spirit was given to Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation and remains there as an ambassador for the breed. Also, as a side note Rain's color is a flaxen chestnut pinto. Flaxen indicates the lighter mane and tail, chestnut is the reddish coloration on the body, and pinto indicates that the body is not a solid color but has patches. An example of palomino would be Spirit's mother in the movie.
I love how they got the complexity of a horse's ankle movement and the strange springy flexion that horses have when they move and run, I have never found another animation (movie, show, or game) that has gotten anywhere near what they had in Spirit.
Aww this was the first movie I ever saw in the cinema with my parents when I was a kid- maybe like 6 years old ! I still get chills at the opening scene when the horses gallop over the hills! It holds such a special place in my heart
@@whitenoisereacts Oo that's cool- perhaps!! I don't know of any more Bankheads here in Ireland but i've heard there's a fair few scattered about America!
This movie is the staple of my childhood. Also means a lot to me that the soundtrack was my favorites of my late grandma. This movie is a lost masterpiece and deserves more love and attention. 💖🐎
I was only 10 when I saw this in theaters. The music, sweeping visuals, and emotions really stuck with me, and still holds up today. And what a *criminally* underrated score by Hans Zimmer 🙌
41:59 back then when the movie came out I saw a documentation of behind the scenes and the animators talked about how horses are one of the most difficult animals to bring to life. Because they move with such different paces and the muscels look/move different in every one so apperently it's very difficult to make them move fluid and natural on screen.
i grew up watching this movie multiple times every single day for like five years straight so when i saw the show come out i was excited but then i watched the first episode and i was disgusted, they turned this masterpiece into horsegirl garbage
This is my second favorite movie, right behind the TLK. Choosing the animals not to outright talk, and using the soundtrack to tell the story, was a risky move, but they pulled it off phenomenally. What a masterpiece! I remember when I had a huge Spirit plush when I was a little girl. My Golden Retriever liked to cuddle with it while she had cancer, so I decided to have it buried with her when she died. She loved Spirit as much as I.
That is so touching and heartbreaking. I did something similar with my beloved cat Angelina, who I had had since she was born, and she died from pancreatitis very shortly after turning 16 in 2018. She always sat by me on the sofa, on top of a red and orange InuYasha blanket that she loved the most, out of all our throws in the house. When we lost Angelina, I had her wrapped in her favorite InuYasha blanket when we buried her. It was the least I could do for her.
The best 2D/3D animated movies are the two with a score composed by Hans Zimmer and a wide shot of the gold-skinned protagonist animal running homeward through the breathtaking scenery.
I was obsessed with the film and especially the music in my teenage years and I have seen it countless times. There was not a single time when I didn't cry at Sound the Bugle. Such a masterpiece of a film. My cousin is pretty good at art stuff and she gifted me a painting of Spirit and Rain and a cut out of Spirit's silhouette on my birthday :) I still have them about 15 years later.
I related so much to Sound the Bugle during the hard times I've had in high school and college (a lot of AP classes and now an Engineering Degree) when my greatest efforts feel hopeless and the road ahead seems unbearable, but that line... "You're a soldier now/Fighting in a battle/To be free once more/Yeah, that's worth fighting for..." that line gave always gave me the inspiration I needed to keep fighting and push through the sleepless nights and tears. Every once in a while I look up reviews of this movie on UA-cam to see if there are any new ones, it's always nice to see other people who appreciate this movie the way I do
This movie was my first exposure to the idea that caring for animals many times means leaving them alone and free on the wild, I used to capture little lizards and bugs at 7 to look at but after this I couldn’t stop thinking about their moms and animal friends missing them so I stopped
Concerning your question about the reference work: They had experts come in to give detailed explanations of equine anatomy to the animators and went over all the perspectives and angles that could be challenging to animate. They also brought in real horse models that the animals could use as references and Spirit is modelled after a real kiger mustang. The work they did was absolutely incredible and as a horse owner i can say that i have yet to see a movie that does a better job at animating horses. Also fun fact: Rain is a paint horse and was even registered as a real paint horse by the american paint horse association because she was such a stunning example of a paint horse.
I loved this movie so much as a kid I had a horse themed 6th birthday party! Such an underrated movie, the Matt Damon inner monologue is such a cool way to have the main character "speak" while still keeping it realistic. Also Bryan Adams went hard with this soundtrack and I appreciate it so much. Love watching movies with you guys!
As a horse person who LOVES this movie, thank you for reacting/commentating over it!! It's my absolute favourite movie ever. Also, a lot of horse people like myself HATE the colonel. Also Rain (Spirit's girlfriend) is a pinto, technically skewbald (brown and white). Piebald is black and white. Also, I'm not an animator but I draw horses. They are difficult to draw as it is, so it's so impressive how they animated this movie so well!
(just to add to this) skewbald and piebald are UK terms! americans call all white spotting patterns pinto. there are a lot of white spotting patterns, many that have not been fully researched yet, but the main types are tobiano, sabino, frame overo, splashed white and dominant white (also referred to as simply "white spotting"). the rest of the world uses a combination of both UK and american terms, or call the marking by its actual name. rain herself is a flaxen chestnut tobiano.
@whitenoisereacts they did indeed have a real horse for reference while working on spirit! much of the horse’s personality and mannerisms inspired the character, and his color is also the same (he really does have a striking orange/yellow color to him that seems unreal in person). the real spirit is still around, he’s a 26-27 year old Kiger Mustang, and currently resides with Return to Freedom which is a mustang sanctuary in CA. I got the opportunity to go meet him and tour the sanctuary last year and it was probably one of the biggest highlights of my life. (and yes i did cry, it’s not everyday you meet your childhood hero.) one thing that stood out to me when i met the horse, is that despite the film having a cartoon style to it, movie spirit’s body from the way he stands to the shapes of his body (especially his shoulders) were so obviously based on the real horse. they definitely did lots of reference work, you could really see the close resemblance to the animated horse in the way the real one was built and how he moved, i’m always left in awe when i recall how the real spirit is so recognizably the base for the animated one. even if they were completely different colors that would still ring true. so glad you guys made a video on this movie, i was in tears at a few points because there’s nothing like watching people get excited and happy over something you also love. thank you.
This an all time favorite of mine. No matter how many times I see it I still tear up. It leaves an almost bitter taste in my mouth that we humans destroyed the way of life for wild horses. This movie is always in my head. The soundtrack lives on my phone. I cannot put into words what this movie means to me.
This was my favorite movie when I was a child. My grandma (she's 91 now) always loved the scene of Spirit being born because it's something she saw many many times and she says it looks exactly like real life.
Spirit is what's called a buckskin (the light brown with black main and tail and legs). His mom is a palomino (pale brown / yellow or gold with a white main and tail), and then Spirit's lady love is a pinto. There's also a paint horse, but paint horses require certain bloodlines and registration in addition to the coloring. As someone else mentioned, the APHA (American Paint Horse Association) gave the mare an honorary registration, which I think is cute / cool.
This might just be one of the top animated movies to date. It is INSANELY impressive and I have nothing but praise for it. I don’t know why they brought on Bryan Adams, who is…an 80’s rock band leader if I recall, but he did a FANTASTIC job with the songs. The story is fantastic and you get goosebumps of how legendary this freaking horse is. Probably up there with Secretariat’s athletic feats just to take a gander. Just more hoppy. The only movie I like from this era more is Treasure Planet and that just might be because I love that fantasy world so much. They are either my top 2 favorite movies, or WallE lands somewhere inbetween them. And that’s IT.
I grew up around horses and I always appreciated the animation of the horses in this movie. The major way to tell how horses feel is their ears. And you can observe that the animators using that perfectly hear. The music is Hans Zimmer. That is why it is so beautiful. My favourite animated movie (next to the Iron Giant)
i used to have this on DVD and the special features went a lot in depth into how the animators worked through the process. They spent a lo tof time in person around horses, took a lot of video, a lot of pictures, and even free drew them regularly. Soooo much time.
Hey!! So happy you guys got around to this one! This was my favorite movie as a kid. Impressed as I got older knowing how damn hard it is to animate horses lol. Thanks for the reaction!
I know some people get into drawing through anime, but I got into it through Spirit and other movies like it. The behind the scenes on the DVD had a lot about how they mixed 2D and 3D and also had tutorials for kids to draw along. I did those, but then later would just pause this movie and others to draw different shots and then later learned to draw my own stuff. This movie will always be very dear to me for that. And I thought it was genius to have an animated movie about animals but they don’t really talk. It felt more grown up to me. My sister and I also had the soundtrack on CD so I know every line and music que by heart
@@whitenoisereacts yeah I still draw and paint a lot and just this year started to try my hand at digital art. I’m not fantastic but it’s been my hobby my whole life
I'm putting my nostalgia goggles on to watch this reaction. This right here is one of THE BEST animated movies ever made. I know I'm gonna cry, it always happens with this one. The goddamn soundtrack in all its beauty DESTROYS me every time.
This Dreamworks film really is underrated and deserves more love! I love the animation, the story, and the music. If the creators had the horses talk verbally, that would’ve been cool. However, the emotions alone was still a great way to show how they feel in the given situations. In terms of animation references, I look to this film for inspiration of horses because they are unbelievably realistic in this film.
Rain's horse breed is Paint One of the many things I love about Spirit is that you couldn't just ride him and/or be his friend. You had to earn it I LOVE this movie so much!!!!! I would sing the songs from this movie whenever I could, mainly "You Can't Break Me" and "Get Off My Back". I always cry at the of the movie. Also, this movie saved me mentally and emotionally when I was in the shelter system for almost two years. I can't explain in words just how much and what this movie means to me. I glad that you both enjoyed this movie :)
Ok can we all agree that this movie has some underrated songs!! I mean the man who sings these songs has such a nice voice and the images and scenes to go with them is just beautiful
Loved your reaction!! I have never understood how this movie is not acclaimed and celebrated. The story, characters, animation, music, etc. are all incredible. One of the greatest animated movies ever made!
This movie is pure nostalgia, but i still cry every time i watch it, and just like NTF said, i notice new things after watching it again years later. I also like how the soldier guy that was the "villain" in the beginning wasn't a total evil cartoonish character. The fact that he let them go in the end gives him at least some depth.
thats what I love about this movie, they went out of their way that the talking of the main char other then voice over was entirely through the songs, they are esentially him.
I love this movie so much! I saw it twice in theaters when it came out. First time with my dad and second time with my summer program group. I even still have the VHS tape. It is just an incredible movie! One of the best!
This movie was my INSPIRATION for art. The DVD on the making of this film is amazing and there's a bit. The 'How to Draw Spirit' section. It shows you the steps to drawing realistic horses and helps you understand it and the process WAY better than those complex 'how to draw' books of yesterday
I just had to comment on this, Spirits mom was a palomino, Spirit is a buckskin and the brown and white horse is a paint horse or also called a pinto horse. Love the reaction.
spirit's colour is actually a hot topic for debate! while his dam is palomino and his sire (in the books) is black, he has the primitive markings of a dun like the kiger mustang his design was based on. my personal vote is buckskin nd1 (a "non-dun" variant that doesn't cause dilution but does cause primitive markings), but bay dun is also quite popular (also paint and pinto are different things! paint refers to the american paint horse breed, which rain is technically a foundation aph? most paints are pintos. pinto is a term used to refer to a group of white spotting patterns. rain herself would be a flaxen chestnut tobiano (a type of pinto) american paint horse)
The audio team did a very amazing good job. The effect to see figures in clouds tbey were using horse sounds to imagine human words in a similar way. It is brilliant!
I grew up worshiping this film hahaha. had it on VHS and watched it so many times the tape broke. Then I had it on DVD and that’s pretty worn too. It’s so sad to me how under appreciated this film is in general. If you’re ever interested in another film told through a horses perspective I highly recommend the 1994 live action adaptation of black beauty. It’s very different from spirit but was another one of my absolute favourites growing up.
This movie is criminally underrated. This is such an unique movie, animationwise with sweeping shots of landscape and creative ways of animating the eild horses and Spirit in their habitat, and the fact that the very horses the movie is about are the focus of this movie, down to the fact that the makers of this movie fidn’t make the animals speak but such like the voice of Spirit says in the opening scene ”this story was written in the heart of horses”, which is shown by Spirit narrating his thoughts to the audience in key moments where otherwise his feelings and reactions are conveyed through sheer body-language and expressions typical to a horse. This is and has always been my favorite nimated movie since childhood, and I love everything about it. The score and songs are a perfect addition to the movie, and whenever I listen to the score it gives off pure emotion and it gives off the feeling of horses galloping freely on the prairie. I’m so glad you reacted to this movie and I’m really enjoy you watching these movies with such enthusiasm and appreciation for their art, music and style.
I had the good luck of getting to watch this in cinema when it was released and I still, to this day, get chills with the running scene in the beginning.
I also saw this in the theater and the part that still gives me chills is that lightning shot (just after Spirit was captured) because it was SO breathtaking! (Especially since back then, theaters were still fairly dark so when the light went out, you couldn't really see ANYTHING and then those flashes of lightning lit everything in an eerie way.) This is definitely one of my favorite movies and favorite movie soundtracks to this day.
This movie is so underrated, and it's insane the musical score got snubbed by the Oscars. The lyrical version of Bryan Adams' "Nothing I've Ever Known" fits the movie, but I still love the instrumental version too.
FUN FACT: In this film, Spirit was actually designed from a real Kiger Mustang stallion that lives at the Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California! Here's a link to the video showing the real-life Spirit: ua-cam.com/video/eNSqaS5t8dw/v-deo.html
Yay finally, I was starting to think it would never happen tbh because I'm not exaggerating when I say this movie has a hold on me. Also Little Creek was definitely a childhood crush for me.
16:27 Rain is a actually a pinto horse!! Palomino horses usually remain one single beige coat color and lighter mains+tails! Most also have dapples to their coat
This is one of those movies that I only watched once. It's an awesome movie, but it got to me so much (it's one of the few movies to make me cry, when Rain gets hurt and then the "Sound of the Bugel" segment). I am glad I saw it, but I don't think I could ever watch it on my own again because it affected me that much. It's mentally and emotionally hard. This soundtrack is easily in my Top #5, I'll listen to every single song (even the instrumental songs). My fav song is actually an instrumental one, called "Run Free". Fav lyrical song is "You Can't Take Me". I do like how the main char, Spirit, doesn't 'talk', but is still the narrator. Matt Damon did a great job! The saddest thing about this movie, it's the fact that this DID happen in real life. The suppression of the Native Americans and the 'taming of the wild west' pushing species like the Buffalo to be endangered. Thankfully things were done to rectify these mistakes, but it'll never be the same. FYI, Tarzan did come before this movie. It's 1999 this was 2002.
This movie was my entire childhood. I even had a birthday cake for it with the little figurines on it in in a green field 😂 I still love it for nostalgia reasons, so glad to see you reacting to it!
I got to go to a special screening of this before it came out in theaters. Tiny me thought I was so cool! It's such a good movie. I got a paint horse when I was 12 and I'm about to be 30 and still have him ^^
The actual squeak I let out when I saw the nots, loved this movie since i was really small - most of my affections towards horses its because of it too, i watched over and over again for days without fail - and actually i had searched just for the tiniest chance that you guys had reacted to it before. It was a nice surprise!! Its such a well animated, written and produced movie in every possible way
I LOVE horses still with all my heart!! I still watch this movie all the time, as it was one of my FAVORITES when I was little... SO, I'm super happy you both liked it too!!! Fun fact: They also spent months with horse experts to get the correct movement and musculature down... They even went as far as buying a Kiger Mustang named Donner, so they could get the movements and features down pat. They even did a crash course of sorts for the Dreamworks team, and they were sent to the L. A. Equestrian Center, where they learned about the locomotion, anatomy, movement, and behavior of horses to make sure they got everything right when they got to the final product.... as a horse lover myself, I can attest to how hard it is to draw horses correctly!
I absolutely loved this movie growing up. This and Balto were one of my favorites. Not sure if balto is dreamworks or not but you should totally do a react to it.
Rain, the horse you said you loved the color of is called a "Paint", Spirit is a Buckskin, and Spirit's mom is the color you mentioned called Palomino. I've been training horses for 15 years and own all of those colors mentioned cause I love them all xD
I've loved this film since I was small 💕 and I remember watching it in the cinema with my dad and older sister. When the train fell and rolled down the hill, I remember my dad(a steam train lover) saying "poor train" at that moment 🤣. But yeah, this film sparked my obsession with horses.... and it still makes me cry when he's first captured, when Rain gets shot and spirit was dragged away from her, and when they reunited. I haven't known any other animated movie like it.
I swear, this movie is and will always be my favourite animation movie! Disney's Brother Bear is the only other one that gets me this emotional 😅 I honestly cry the whole movie and I don't even know why 😂 Thank you for your reaction! 💜
This is my favorite horse movie of all time, it’s a masterpiece in my book, I grew up riding and being around horses, so this movie really holds a special place in my heart
This movie has always been one of my favorites. I love the song choices and the instrumental side of the soundtrack as a whole. The animation is spot on and I like how they were able to capture so much emotion from just adding a pair of eyebrows to a horse. So cool that the main characters don't speak the entire movie and yet we understand perfectly what's happening. Thank you for watching this! Any updates on the status of your anime channel?
If you like the soundtracks there are 3 songs by Bryan Adams of course that haven't made into the movie - Don't Let Go - Nothing I've Ever Known (you'll recognize the melody) - (and my favorite of all the songs related to the movie) Brother Under The Sun
This one was one of my boys favorite stories when they were younger and they still love it today. I’m glad they didn’t make the horses talk. It would take away from the story that way. Great reaction! 😊
the animation in this movie was absolutely groundbreaking. Dreamworks had to design a software program from scratch to accomplish it and were basically the first ones to blend 2D and 3D so flawlessly. and really there hasn't been another animated movie that comes even close to this level. Sound the bugle is also probably one of the darkest/most powerful songs in any kids movie. "if you lose yourself, your courage soon will follow. so be strong tonight" That line alone gets me everytime.
I don't know how much work on this he did exactly, but whenever there's talk of the incredible animation of the horses in this movie I can only think of James Baxter He's famous for a LOT of incredible animation shots in tons of movies and TV shows, including some of the horse animation in Spirit He's such a legend that Adventure Time even made a super well animated horse character based on him just to go "man, look at that James Baxter guy, he's amazing!" for a whole episode or two
I LOVE this movie! Amazing soundtrack, beautiful animation, touching/exciting story, and great voice acting (thank you Matt Damon, yes, I said Matt Damon!) Also, I'm not sure if it was the case for all of them, but several of the Indigenous characters are actually voiced by Indigenous actors! I read that the voice of Little Creek is Daniel Studi, of Cherokee descent! If anyone knows more about this please let me know, I think it's so cool and I didn't even know until recently.
This was one of my absolute favorites growing up due to my love of animated movies (especially early DreamWorks) and my quote unquote obsession with horses (just absolutely loved them as a child despite never being near one in my life). I can't wait to watch this when I get home. 😊😊😊💜💘💜

Yes its a masterpiece stroy background everything is MASTERPIECE
true!
@@ExtremelyDiscerning Only thing: I prefer to watch the German dub, because it has a way better narrator and a more..involved...text. There it really sounds as if they are the thoughts of the horse.
I mean, it lost to Spirited Away…out of all the things to lose, that should be it
@@spazzyshortgirl23 it lost to Spirited Away for best animated feature film, I said the music and songs were snubbed 🙂
but honestly this movie just proves that you CAN tell a story centered around animals without them HAVING to talk and stuff. and i love it
DreamWorks said "Listen, if we're gonna do horses, we're gonna do it right dammit!"
I love seeing the movements of the animals in this movie. Definitely solidified my curiosity for nature when I was young ❤️
Ohhh yeahhh!!!! It’s just incredible!!
@@whitenoisereacts rewatching it with you guys also made me realize how INSANE some of the landscapes are. They seriously went all out. Lol.
You mean old dreamworks. The new "sPiRiT" is the biggest f up they have ever made. Us true Spirit fans do not claim the new stuff as canon.
@@eloisewillsby you sure that wasn't something they were testing, like I doubt that the old gem would enjoy it, more like it's for the new gen... Which is much f up of all
@@average-art3222 The new gen also hates it. It's just a terrible movie overall.
And horse people will KNOW if you do it wrong!
The amount of times I’ve seen art of horses where the legs are bent the wrong way…
Something I'm not sure of if you know about this movie is that DreamWorks didn't just reference horse images, they actually bought a Kiger Mustang (then named Donner, later renamed Spirit after the character he inspired) and had their artists watch this horse. Also Rain, Spirit's girlfriend is actually given an honorary certificate of registration by the American Paint Horse Association.
Aww that's so sweet ♥
The real horse now lives at Return To Freedom's American Wild Horse Sanctuary. The certificate of registration is viewable on Rain's page on the Spirit fandom wiki. I apologize for no links but I know some channels auto-delete any comments with links.
"Donner" means something rather... interesting in my language. Basically, it just means thunder but we use is as a rather bad word when you want to beat someone up. Also just realised English doesn't have a single word meaning "to beat up". We have 5 of varying intensities.
@@grell5108 'Batter' 'Pummel' 'Thrash' We have many meaning to beat someone up
Wait fr? I knew about Donner but not about Rain
“Racing with the eagle, soaring with the wind. Flying? There were times I believed I could.” One of my favorite lines from this film.
I thought Rain was a paint, not a pinto.
@@Lioness006 Paint is the breed, pinto is the patterning and coloration :)
Horse nerd here. I love that you knew Palomino was a color of horses! Spirit's mom is a Palomino, Rain is a color called pinto. I love you videos!
Wouldn't the pattern be pinto and coat color bay pinto?
She's a paint. Why does everyone seem to say she's a pinto?
@@Lioness006 pinto is a color pattern, paint is a breed. She is both

This is my favorite childhood movie, my grandfather and I always watched it because he loved wild west movies, whenever I miss him I watch spirit
It’s definitely up there for me
I love how they got the complexity of a horse's ankle movement and the strange springy flexion that horses have when they move and run, I have never found another animation (movie, show, or game) that has gotten anywhere near what they had in Spirit.
yeah, horses are almost impossible to actually animate right, it's one of the reason I love this movie like I do.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has AMAZING horse animation. It’s definitely the one of the best, if not THE best I’ve seen.
@@dylanholman3Yes exactly! They also put so so much work into it.
Aww this was the first movie I ever saw in the cinema with my parents when I was a kid- maybe like 6 years old ! I still get chills at the opening scene when the horses gallop over the hills! It holds such a special place in my heart

This movie is the staple of my childhood. Also means a lot to me that the soundtrack was my favorites of my late grandma. This movie is a lost masterpiece and deserves more love and attention. 💖🐎
Yeah it was absolutely incredible for me to watch again!!!
Im sorry about your gran-gran I actually learned to play it to I can dedicate it to my kids
Bryan Adams did a whole lot of the music for this movie!!
I don't think they do make animation like this anymore, or movies in general
I was only 10 when I saw this in theaters. The music, sweeping visuals, and emotions really stuck with me, and still holds up today. And what a *criminally* underrated score by Hans Zimmer 🙌
41:59 back then when the movie came out I saw a documentation of behind the scenes and the animators talked about how horses are one of the most difficult animals to bring to life. Because they move with such different paces and the muscels look/move different in every one so apperently it's very difficult to make them move fluid and natural on screen.
We do not accept the Netflix TV show of this masterpiece
😂😂
Soo true
I hiss at it every time I see it
I refuse to watch it
i grew up watching this movie multiple times every single day for like five years straight so when i saw the show come out i was excited but then i watched the first episode and i was disgusted, they turned this masterpiece into horsegirl garbage
@@kcchristian Lol. Got that right! Hans Zimmer is a legend, and those scenes are legendary.
The soundtrack in this movie is extremely underrated.
Concerning your question about the reference work:
They had experts come in to give detailed explanations of equine anatomy to the animators and went over all the perspectives and angles that could be challenging to animate.
(and yes i did cry, it’s not everyday you meet your childhood hero.) one thing that stood out to me when i met the horse, is that despite the film having a cartoon style to it, movie spirit’s body from the way he stands to the shapes of his body (especially his shoulders) were so obviously based on the real horse.
they definitely did lots of reference work, you could really see the close resemblance to the animated horse in the way the real one was built and how he moved, i’m always left in awe when i recall how the real spirit is so recognizably the base for the animated one. even if they were completely different colors that would still ring true. so glad you guys made a video on this movie, i was in tears at a few points because there’s nothing like watching people get excited and happy over something you also love. thank you.
First saw this when I was 6 …it definitely started my love for horses. I still get so emotional hearing the soundtrack 😭
Aren't they jus the best??
Bryan Adams went so hard for us
This might just be one of the top animated movies to date.
The fact that they recorded real horse sounds says everything about this movie. They put in a lot of effort 🎉
I remember seeing this in theaters. One of my favorite movies, and I still listen to the soundtrack. Especially on hard days.
I know Sound the Bugle has gotten a lot of people (including myself) through a lot of tough times.
Ohhhh wow!!! That’s so fun! Do you still draw?
@@whitenoisereacts yeah I still draw and paint a lot and just this year started to try my hand at digital art. I’m not fantastic but it’s been my hobby my whole life
Oh yeah i drew a ahit ton of horses after this movie. Like horses was all id draw for a while until.i branched out.
James’ inner horse kid definitely came out while watching this movie lmao
This movie, honestly was the kindling for my horse obsession XD the song are still as bomb as I remembered!
I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid! This and Tarzan, are two of my all time favorites, so I can agree that they have similar vibes!
Rain's horse breed is Paint
One of the many things I love about Spirit is that you couldn't just ride him and/or be his friend. You had to earn it
I LOVE this movie so much!!!!!
You know a movie is legendary when you hear horse noises and imagine the dialogue yourself
Loved your reaction!!
I have never understood how this movie is not acclaimed and celebrated. The story, characters, animation, music, etc. are all incredible.
One of the greatest animated movies ever made!
As a kid this movie taught me never to give up . Fighting spirit 🐎
Rain is actually an "American Indian horse" meaning she was probably born in the tribe
Ohhhh shoot!
spirit's colour is actually a hot topic for debate! while his dam is palomino and his sire (in the books) is black, he has the primitive markings of a dun like the kiger mustang his design was based on. my personal vote is buckskin nd1 (a "non-dun" variant that doesn't cause dilution but does cause primitive markings), but bay dun is also quite popular
(also paint and pinto are different things! paint refers to the american paint horse breed, which rain is technically a foundation aph? most paints are pintos. pinto is a term used to refer to a group of white spotting patterns. rain herself would be a flaxen chestnut tobiano (a type of pinto) american paint horse)
I cry an ocean everytime I watch this fckng movie 💀
The audio team did a very amazing good job. The effect to see figures in clouds tbey were using horse sounds to imagine human words in a similar way. It is brilliant!
I'm always stoked for more Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron content! Thank you guys so much for doing this reaction!
I remember seeing this in theaters as a little kid!
I had the good luck of getting to watch this in cinema when it was released and I still, to this day, get chills with the running scene in the beginning.
I saw it in theatres too ^_^ cried like a baby then and still do today lol.
I also saw this in the theater and the part that still gives me chills is that lightning shot (just after Spirit was captured) because it was SO breathtaking! (Especially since back then, theaters were still fairly dark so when the light went out, you couldn't really see ANYTHING and then those flashes of lightning lit everything in an eerie way.)
This is definitely one of my favorite movies and favorite movie soundtracks to this day.
i wish i couldve seen it in theatres but i was born 2 years after it released 😭
I love how this movie tells a compelling story with so little dialogue ❤
This movie put me on to Bryan Adams as a kid. Been listening to him ever since
This movie was my entire childhood. I even had a birthday cake for it with the little figurines on it in in a green field 😂 I still love it for nostalgia reasons, so glad to see you reacting to it!

The actual squeak I let out when I saw the nots, loved this movie since i was really small - most of my affections towards horses its because of it too, i watched over and over again for days without fail - and actually i had searched just for the tiniest chance that you guys had reacted to it before. It was a nice surprise!! Its such a well animated, written and produced movie in every possible way
Awww thanks so much :)
Oh yes balto is a lovely film and also one of my favorites too!!
Balto is actually made by Universal Pictures. Still, it is a good film.
Rain, the horse you said you loved the color of is called a "Paint", Spirit is a Buckskin, and Spirit's mom is the color you mentioned called Palomino. I've been training horses for 15 years and own all of those colors mentioned cause I love them all xD
The part where the Sergeant nodded his head gives me goosebumps.
I do too!!!
If you like the soundtracks there are 3 songs by Bryan Adams of course that haven't made into the movie
- Don't Let Go
- Nothing I've Ever Known (you'll recognize the melody)
- (and my favorite of all the songs related to the movie) Brother Under The Sun
This one is another masterpiece of a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, "young hearts" is definitely my favorite, it transmits so many things
I was obsessed with this movie growing up and it still remains one of my favorite animations to this day!! I absolutely love it!
This one was one of my boys favorite stories when they were younger and they still love it today. I’m glad they didn’t make the horses talk. It would take away from the story that way. Great reaction! 😊
This movie is so gorgeous, and I adored it due to it coming out when I was in a horse phase. Still has a special place in my heart!
I really love this movie. And Spirit really is a brave, smart and a strong horse. And the all of the songs are very incredible to.
the animation in this movie was absolutely groundbreaking.
Ooooh! This is a nostalgic masterpiece. The best DreamWorks hand drawn animated film. And the best film about horses 😄
It’s just SO AWESOME!!!
My little sister used to cry tears whenever she saw any scene of this film because she knew all the heartbreaking things the horse goes through.
That snowflake horses on the train scene always gets me emotional, it's so pretty.
I don't know how much work on this he did exactly, but whenever there's talk of the incredible animation of the horses in this movie I can only think of James Baxter
He's famous for a LOT of incredible animation shots in tons of movies and TV shows, including some of the horse animation in Spirit
He's such a legend that Adventure Time even made a super well animated horse character based on him just to go "man, look at that James Baxter guy, he's amazing!" for a whole episode or two
JAAAAA-AAA-AMES BAXTER
I absolutely love this movie and the songs.
Glad you reached to it.
